500Mbps & nbn fibre upgrades

As I mentioned we're now offering 500Mbps/50Mbps, which with a 12 month discount is a great option if you're eligable for nbn's fibre upgrade program, which you can find more details about at https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-fibre-upgrade/.

Existing customers

If you are an existing customer and have not had a promotion in the last 12 months we will be happy to provide you with this discount. Please just contact our support team which you can do very easily at https://leaptel.com.au/contact/.

In any other circumstances also just reach out and see what our team can do, we are willing to assess any reasonable requests on a case by case basis.

Opticomm

If you're in an Opticomm area we have different 6 month offers which can be found at https://leaptel.com.au/opticomm-plan/. We'd love to match the nbn offer but Opticomm's wholesale pricing is more expensive (and they just put their prices up again!) than nbn and we presently absorb a $99 ex gst activation charge for all new connections alongside other charges.

Speed & Service

We are with nbn directly on 121/121 nbn POIs which means guaranteed no CVC congestion as we control our own CVC and have lots of headroom.

IPoE/DHCP is our standard connection method (no vlan tagging required) and we are happy for you to BYO modem. We do support PPPoE as well should you wish to use that connection method.

All connections are CGNAT by default, however you can disable CGNAT and receive a IPv4 dynamic IP at no cost through our portal, full details at https://leaptel.com.au/faq-cgnat/.

We support IPv6 in a trial/alpha configuration and can be toggled on in our portal.

We have points of presence in data centres in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney with peering and transit in each. You can check out our looking glass at - https://lg.leaptel.com.au/.

Our support team is located in Box Hill, Melbourne, so when you have a problem you're talking to someone local. Wait time are kept to a minimum and we support livechat and email tickets as well.

Who we are

Many of you won't know who Leaptel is. And that's fair, we've mostly been focused on providing services on the Opticomm network which has allowed us to do what we're now doing on nbn.

To keep it brief, this is who we are:

We are 100% Australian owned and operated.
We are 100% committed to providing a high quality product.
We are 100% dedicated to providing the best customer service possible.
We are 100% devoted to improving every day in everything we do.
We are 100% willing to own our mistakes and learn from them.

And I think our reviews back this up.

Please check out our Whirlpool Thread if you'd like to know more about us.

I will happily answer any questions here as well of course.

Edit: 30/09/2022 - We will be continuing this deal and it will last at least until the end of October.

  • I'm with ABB with their 250/50 for $129 - is it worth swapping? Sure there's a substantial saving but for me (WFH and heavy user) I'm just as interested in speed/stability.

    • +4

just curious why people need 250/50 ? im WFH and 35/15 is enough

      • Same here, currently on 100/20 and thinking about downgrading to 50/20 to save a bit of money.

I am on 50/20: WFH, video meetings, amazon/disney/apple evening streaming (no gaming) - totally enough

just curious why people need 250/50 ? im WFH and 35/15 is enough

I regularly download files > 50Gb… Saves a lot of time.

        • -1

Me too. Add on if you're downloading other things, streaming 4K and others using WiFi, etc. Then people will see a big difference. My usual is around 4tb per month. Although these days theres crap for 4K movies and shows so seems to not as much usage as before.

      • +7

So it depends what you use the internet for.

In my spare time I am a gamer, which means I often have big downloads for new games or for updates for new games. Having a faster connection means I spend less time waiting for the game to download and more time playing it (hopefully!).

WFH for most people is not bandwidth intensive. Email, web-browsing etc. doesn't use much on your connection.

If you're doing things like video meetings you might use a chunk of your upload/downlaod but probably no more than 5Mbps.

The most data intensive part of WFH for most people is the Netflix they might have running on their second monitor

      • If you work in a cloud share environment, then it is important to get everything uploaded and downloaded in close to real time.
If you work in media, hefty uploads are a daily occurrence.

There are really many situations where you'd need it, but OP did say they are WFH AND a heavy user, so it could be that he/she doesn't need 250 for work, but does require enough of a buffer that work performance won't suffer from the other uses and users.

    • How do you get 250/50 from abb. I thought all the 250 tier packages had a 25 uplink speed?

      • +2

Yep the nbn AVC is 250/25 and 1000/50. There is no 250/50 AVC.

  • I would switch if I wasn't somewhat locked in to Aussie BB with them likely to charge the $200 fee from my recent FTTN to FTTP upgrade, even if I stay on the 500/50 tier with Leaptel.

    • likely to charge the $200 fee from my recent FTTN to FTTP upgrade

Did they notify you of this, because I didn't get notified with my ISP when I phoned to upgrade. Thus the ombudsman can get involved to get the fee waived.

      • It says they may charge in the T&C but wording is a bit vague, however according to people on Whirlpool it's being automatically invoiced when people transfer even if maintaining a qualifying speed somewhere else.

        • +1

Will keep that in mind, but unless they explicitly told you, there's a good chance the Ombudsman will side with you. The can enforce termination of contracts and costs to the consumer.

@Twix: Thanks, I didn't like the carriage return. It wasted screen space.

    • Often they are over provisioned, but not by much. Expect to max out at 500 on a 500 plan.

      • +1

We are overprovisoning to 570Mbps, which is a pretty generous level of overprovisoning.

Internal tests showed our staff were getting 540-560Mbps with variances due to the router involved. But all well above 500Mbps.

        • Agreed. That is a generous level.

Wondering how over provisioned the 100 and 250 plans would be?

          • +1

@Morien: We overprovision in line with the nbn shaper on the port. I can't remember off the top of my head what they are but I think its 116Mbps on 100Mbps.

There's no point overprovisining higher than the nbn shaper, because if we did then you'd have all sorts of issues as the nbn shaper is pretty strict in how it handles traffic going over its limit.

            • @LeaptelRep: LeaptelRep: We overprovision in line with the nbn shaper on the port. I can't remember off the top of my head what they are but I think its 116Mbps on 100Mbps.

I don't get overprovision for my Leaptel 100/20 plan. I can only get 90Mbps even at off-peak hours. Why?

              • @ttomomo: Best to chat to our support team. It could be a number of things depending on your technology type.

If its not FTTN my suspicion would be your connection between the router and the NTD/ONT etc. is only 100Mbps so overprovisoning isn't able to give you extra speeds. So sorting that out is recommended.

Also if you're using PPPoE there is higher overheads, so switching to IPoE/DHCP is recommended if possible.

  • I have sent a pm to ask some more questions.

    Thanks!

    • +1

      Replied. Hope it helps!

  • I had ongoing issues switching to Asus Routers when I was with Superloop in FTTN.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/91mxlx5v
"your ISP dhcp does not function properly"

This was solved upon switching to More who have both a username/password login and a static IP address (not sure which one solved it). I since got upgraded to FTTP and the issues haven't returned.

Any ideas if this ISP will play nicely too?

    • So the username/password login you're referring to is PPPoE. We do support PPPoE as an alternative to IPoE (it is mentioned in the OP).

IPoE is default for us, but if you had any trouble you can flick PPPoE on in our portal, or just ask our team to turn it on for you and give you the credentials (which are also located in our portal).

As to whether your Asus router will work with our DHCP implementation I would be surprised if it didn't… the IPoE implementation for nbn is generally very solid and in my experience it's quite strange if its not working with any modern equipment and should usually be able to be resolved with some troubleshooting of the settings on your router.

      • Yeah it's a pretty widespread ASUS issue. But in my experiences different ISPs aren't affected. Wasn't sure if it was the Static either as it's the renewing lease that's the issue.

    • I used to get this issue some years back on Superloop until Asus updated their firmware so you could select "Continuous mode" for the DHCP query frequency setting. I never had the issue since.

      • I switched the settings between the 3 options without change

    • +1

hi @scuderiarmani i've managed to unpack this issue for my usecase, maybe it will help you or someone else with this issue (terminology might not be perfect but hopefully good enough).

As best as i can tell a lot of Asus routers allow the inbuilt switch to start working before the rest of the router is fully operational. When the DHCP is assigning the WAN IP it gives it to the first device that it finds on the network, and because the switch is already running it can assign it to the TV or anything else. I've had it that I could watch netflix on the TV, even while the router had that 'your ISP DHCP does not function properly' error message was displayed, and the rest of the network had no internet.

What has worked for me is:
      - powering off the router and modem
      - unplugging any patch leads to the router
      - kicking the connection (ABB have this option in their app, for a provider that doesn't you may have to wait up to half an hour for the DHCP lease to expire)
      - then powering everything up again
      - once the DHCP IP has been assigned correctly i can then plug in the patch leads.

I only get the DHCP issue when there has been some kind of network or power outage so i don't need to do this very often.

      • Thanks will very much keep it in mind if I try a new ISP soon

  • The 500/50 is very tempting. Anyone churned from ABB to Leaptel and can compare the 2?
Currently paying $99/mo for 100/20 so 5x the speed for another $10 sounds nice.

  • +1

Is your international transit still with Vocus? I saw some mention you might consider moving elsewhere when your contract with them expired mid this year? I ask because my experiences with Vocus' international transit hasn't been great in the past.

    • Hi Arsenal.

It is stull with Vocus because there's a contract in place that has to run down before we can go to market.

Perhaps there's some destinations you'd like some speed results for in which case I can provide them for you.

In my experience Vocus International Transit has improved significantly over the past 18 months, but its fair to say that in 2020 when COVID first drove traffic through the roof they did struggle a bit.

      • Sorry yes, I realise you have been contracted to use Vocus, however i thought I had read one of your reps on Whirlpool last year say that the contract was up mid this year, but perhaps i misunderstood.

I have friends and family in the US, UK and Netherlands that I share videos and video calls with frequently so i wouldn't mind seeing some speedtest results if possible?

It's good to hear that things are improving with Vocus these days.

        • I'll produce some speedtest results from my home connection tonight in peak and put them here.

We had a choice at the end of last year, we could either keep Vocus as an nbn aggregator for another year, and switch transit, or we could end our Vocus nbn aggregator agreement and go nbn direct but we'd have to keep our Vocus transit contract for a while longer.

          We chose the later.

          • @LeaptelRep: Thanks, no need to worry re the speed tests - off the back of your responses here I’ve opted to go ahead and sign up so I’ll be able to test it for myself tomorrow hopefully!

Always good to try out a new provider.. don’t like recommending them to clients unless I’ve tried them myself!

            • +1

@Arsenal: I thank you for taking a leap of faith with us. I really hope it works out. We know international is one area we want to improve on, just have to wind that contract down.

      • +1

I have to say, the level of transparency you have shown in this post makes me feel like signing up today!

  • Hopped on, can't wait for my Exetel 30-day cancellation period to end

  • TPG also have 30-days notice period which has been very effective in preventing me to move out.

  • Great that its for existing customers too!

  • My home connection is with Leaptel. No complaints, good speeds, fair price and really great support team.

  • not too savvy with the hardware, can we just use existing NBN modems I got from Telstra?

    • In most cases Telstra's modems will work with our network via IPoE/DHCP. They were one of our main test cases when we rolled out IPoE (we bought a bunch off ebay to test).

      • Any known issue with using a Vodafone modem?

        • +1

Shouldn't be… but I can never 100% guarantee anyone elses hardware but I suspect its just the same IPoE/DHCP defaults as everyone's routers these days.

  • +1

I was with Leaptel for a good few years, first on opticomm and later NBN HFC. Everything was fine, until it wasn't. There was an intermittent issue with the HFC that meant we were without internet for anything from moments to hours at a time. First leaptel said there was a problem and they'd fix it, then someone else from leaptel decided there wasn't, cancelled the job, and wouldn't reinstate it. I cancelled the service and switched to Aussie who logged the fault immediately and had an NBN tech out to fix it within 24 hours. Maybe it was just one bad employee. I don't know. What I do know is when there was a problem, Leaptel did nothing to help.

    • +4

I would love to know more about this case as its not the service we want to deliver. Would you be willing to send me a private message with your details so I could look into your ticket?

I know you're long since moved on but we're always trying to be better and learning where we've let our customers down is an important part of that.

  • +3

Reading through your replies OP, the level of transparency you are showing has me sold. Am I able to sign up and choose activation from a future date (week and a half from now) ?

Also, if I wanted to move up or down a plan, would I lose the discount?

    • You can 100% future date your connection activation date as part of the signup process on our website.

If you move to a higher plan we will honour the discount as you move plans, Eg. You signup with 50/20 with $15 off for 12 months and then move to 100/20, you can take that $15 off for 12 months with you as you move.

We could probably be convinced to re-instate a lower promo for the time remaining when you downgrade it's just manual work that our team would have to do.

  • +1

Usually just jump between Superloop and ABB to take advantage of promos. My current Superloop promo expires this month so will have to churn elsewhere shortly. Was considering testing out Launtel but then this popped up. Anyone here vouch for their latency to gaming servers?

    • +2

If you know the IP addresses of the content you want to check you can use our looking glass at https://lg.leaptel.com.au/ to check the latency from our core routers in the data centres we are in. Hope that helps.

  • you really have to fix up your website the 90s have called and they want it back

    • Oh sorry to hear you think that. Any particular feedback you'd like to offer?

      • just over all your site is not very user-friendly and that you have to put in all your details name/number/address before you're able to see the different plans unlike other sites where you can see all the options from the get-go

        • Thanks for the feedback. Ironically our previous website had the pricing on the front page and multiple marketing companies told us to not directly advertise the price.
In any event you don't have to put the address in to see our plans, you can navigate to our nbn plans (or Opticomm or lightning wholesale) via the Plans dropdown menu. The direct link is https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-plans/

But yes I can see some areas for streamlining the website and we do have plans to iterate the current site and improve it… but we have lots of plans for lots of things and where the time is to implement them all is the question.

          • @LeaptelRep: I’ll second the website comment. Signed up 2 months back as part of previous promotion and it was hard navigating/checking options and also ordering.

Also had to enter my address twice, once for the check and then again later for the order. I’m sure there is room for improvement to make it all faster for the user to enquire.

Speeds are great, but international needs some improvement. See a delay on my video feeds from Europe when compared to Telstra I used until recently. But you are cheaper and I don’t need the perfect international speed all the time…

            Keep up the good work

          • +1

@LeaptelRep: Marketing companies are parasites that love to play games. If customer satisfaction is important to you, most advice from commercial “marketing” firms should be taken very much with a grain of salt.

As a consumer, if I have to play games to get pricing, I will not use that company that lists an item “call us for a price” or requests contact details prior to showing pricing- there is more than enough data mining happening already. Also makes 3am browsing prices kinda difficult if youve gotta wait for a call.

            • @HelpMeiCantSee: You can browse our pricing without putting in any details simply by going to the relevant service type under plans. As we service 3 wholesale networks (nbn/opticomm/lightning) and they all have different pricing we have to seperare them out rather than putting them on our front page.

  • how long is this offer available?

    • +1

At present it is an ongoing offer we may withdraw it at any time but I would think it will go well past this month if it is popular.

  • I would like to switch from Aussie BB to avail this offer

  • Does leaptel use dynamic IPOE?

    • Yep we do, as per the OP:
IPoE/DHCP is our standard connection method (no vlan tagging required) and we are happy for you to BYO modem. We do support PPPoE as well should you wish to use that connection method.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Do you use CGNAT / do you do static IPs as an option?

    • During signup it gave me the option of a static for $10 and the email said CGNAT is enabled by default but you can opt out and get a dynamic IP.

      • Is that $10/m extra, or once off?

    • As per below, you can purchase a static IP for an additional $10 per month. CGNAT is on by default but you can turn it off at 0 cost through our portal.

      • Thanks. Considering leaving my Launtel 400/50 to you as it is $20 cheaper, noting I need the static IP.

        • Yeah so I don't know if/what Launtel charges for the static IP but we charge $10 a month. So if they don't charge anything we would be $10 cheaper per month.

          • @LeaptelRep: Launtel charge $100 refundable deposit for a static IP. Much better value. Perhaps you look into this. $10/month is terrible

            • @Bruceflix: Yeah I paid $100 refundable deposit. It's actually $30 cheaper (around $139/m for 400/50 with them), but $20 if you add the static IP.

              • @OzLocutus: $4.10/day for 400/50
                ~$124.70/month
So launtel is cheaper but 100mb/s less bandwidth over the regular price
$10/month for static IP is a deal breaker. Hard to justify that price

                • +1

@Bruceflix: There's no more IPv4 addresses available in the world for free. Which means if we want to get anymore we have to buy them in large blocks at significant cost. Their cost is just going to go up and up.

Fortunately IPv6 is increasingly supported so hopefully in the not to distant future the days of needing static IPv4 addresses for certain niche applications will be behind us. But until then please forgive us for placing a price on a scarce resoure which we cannot easily obtain more of.

                  • -1

@LeaptelRep: Launtel were spewing when a heap of extra IPs was going to cost 5 figures. Pretty sucky.

                    • @Clear: It's particularly frustrating when there's a whole bunch of allocated addresses sitting utilised due to legacy allocations.

                • @Bruceflix: @bruceflix ah yes I'm thinking of the 1000/50 which is $139/m roughly.

So yep, no point moving away from Launtel.

                  • @OzLocutus: Hey, you should give LightningIP a try, i've been paying $139.00 a month with free static IP

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/f7290f47-29ef-4da6-a45… <—my speed test results being with them for 4 months now no issues

i'm on HFC connection, currently awaiting for the invite to be a beta test for their ipv6 dual mode

They use Virtutel as their backhaul for international links

  • Hello - that's good pricing, I'm going to take a leap of faith and leave Aussie broadband for you :)

  • This looks promising. I am currently overseas and will be re-establishing NBN service when I get back. Have been with Aussie Broadband for many years but the cost of their 50/20 service is hard to justify. Can't fault them on anything else though.

    • I'm paying $109 for 100/40, I could have 500/50 for the same price.

Can't fault their service but I'm with you - hard to justify the price.

      • +1

Worst-case scenario is you try another provider and it doesn't work out to your satisfaction and crawl back to ABB with your tail between your legs! But the signs from Leaptel are pretty good.

        • 100%. NBN makes it very easy to move providers. I am confident people will enjoy the experience with us, but if they don't the risk is minimal.

        • No crawling, youd be better off. As the deals for new customers are far better. So rather leave and come back

  • I'm currently getting screwed by Optus paying something like $80 a month for 50/20 FTTN and have one of their modems. Do you know if that modem will work if I switch to you guys or will I need pay for a new modem as well?

    • +1

Pretty confident your Optus modem would work. You also don't have to buy a modem from us… an off the shelf modem from almost any retailer in Australia should work fine with us.

  • +1

I just churned from ABB to Leaptel FTTP because of this deal. Took just over an hour from signup to connected, saved myself $25 a month. Thanks for the deal!

    • I'm looking to do the same. Does ABB pro-rata your final bill (assuming you changed mid billing cycle)?

      • +2

Aussie BB does pro rata refunds.

      • As Twix said, it was pro-rata.

    • +3

Don't forget to cancel Aussie BB if Leaptel put your service on a different nbn NTD UNI-D port.

      • +2

        ^ Very good advice.

You get to choose whether you want to churn (replace your previous RSP's connection) or order an additional service on a UNI-D port as part of our website signup process.
