I Bought a BYD Atto 3 So You Didn't Have Too. Anything You Would Like to Know About It?

I ended up buying a BYD Atto 3, partially because I wanted an EV, somewhat because I didn't want a Tesla and mostly out of spite (As per that comment, it's even complete with wankery number plate). I wanted to put my money where my mouth is and buy one of these "cHiNa CaR bAd" EV's so maybe you don't have to.

I took delivery of it from Sydney (Castle Hill BYD) and promptly drove it back to work up the F4 freeway and back to work (About 200km journey). Consumption was ok (but there is no way this car is getting anywhere near the optimistic 480km range on the highway.) and used an average of about 17kWh/100km.

I ended up getting white, because I'm a tight arse and it was $0 for white ($700 for other colours) and it is not white. It's not even "Pearl White"… it's silver. For comparison, it was sitting next to a silver Navara at the dealership (they share with Nissan) and it was more silver than the Navara.

Quick thoughts

Fit and finish: Very good. I would absolutely say it was on a par with Kia and Hyundai. Seats are really nice. Dash material, not so much. Paint is all good and no massive panel gaps or piss poor painting.

Colours: Interior colours are much more muted and acceptable compared to the original LHD one they were showing in Darlinghurt. And as above, white is not "white".

Performance: About what you would expect from a 1.6 turbo, or a 2.0+ 4 cyl. engine, just way more torque. Regen is disappointing, it's either not enough, or too much. No one pedal driving.

Features: Yep, it's got them. Every anagram you can think of, it's there somewhere. Radar cruise is good and much better than the work Outlander. Lane Keep Assist is a little intrusive, but can be turned off. Cameras are amazingly clear.

Infotainment: Yep, well, that's a hot mess. No AA/ACP, (but AA can be side loaded for now.) Radio randomly reset volume when you turn vehicle off and on again. But all in all, LOTS of features and settings and it is a very snappy display with no lag.

Climate control: It works? All done through media control.

Ride comfort: Meh. Better than my Outlander, not as good as my Fiat. Around town and over bumps and rough surface, it's good. Around fast curves, it's a whale.

Economy: On the freeway/highway, not to bad, better than expected (expected 200~250km, got about 350km) around town, excellent. On one drive, I left home at 75%, got home with 76%.

Noise: Very quiet inside. It is very well insulated. It's no BMW 7 series, but it's certainly no Hyundai Accent. The "pedestrian warning" (drone noise up to 30km/h) feels like it resonates a bit, but swapping it from standard to dynamic helped. (I want a custom pedestrian warning noise.)

Size: Bigger than a Toyota Yaris Cross, a bit smaller than an Outlander. Interior is big compared to the outside would have you believe (I borrowed neighbors cat to swing around to test.) Seats are a good size, rear leg room is massive, boot space is, "average". not small, but not huge. I am 6'2" (188cm) and my head fit well within the car with a good 80~100mm between my head and the roof.

All in all, a really solid first impression. It drives well, is built well, handles on the upper side of "ok", power is good and range is not to bad… So, if you have any questions about the car, want to know anything or want a photos of something in particular, or just want to hang it on me for buying a Chinese EV, have at it.

Remember, I early adopted here so you don't have too, and I am not some paid off shill working for an auto review site/publication, so if it is a piece of shit, I'll say it, if it has issues, I'll certainly let you know and I am not here to defend the vehicle like some fanboi. To me, it is transport, not a love story. It's a family car, so it needs to be treated like one.

Edits and additions:

Total Cost: Some have asked me about what I paid for it, In NSW, the final price was $48,405.91. This included registration but not the stamp-duty. The stamp-duty rebate was done at the dealer for me. There is also a $3,000 EV rebate as well, that one you have to apply for online, and I have applied, but have not received it. After rebate, if/when I get it, it will be a total of $45,406 drive away.

Charging: I have a wall charger ready for install, but at the moment, I am living with a 10A granny charger. From 36% to 100%, the car estimated 24 hours on the 1.6kW granny. I plugged it in over night (8pm~8am) and it went from 36% to 75%. More than enough for an average day of town/city driving.

Pics or it didn't happen: Hold my beer fam… I got this…

Safety Features: I went and covered most of it in this reply

Servicing: This can be found on the BYD Aus website and I have talked about it somewhere around here

Price: $48,405.91 ($0 stamp duty and before $3,000 NSW EV rebate. For more info, I covered it here

Insurance: $884 full comp. through Budget Direct. More info on my "stats" for this price was mentioned here

Why an EV?: Because (fropanity) petrol companies! It had nothing to do with "saving the planet"

That rear badge: It's ok, you know I got your back on this…

Observations and Updates

First OTA updates have arrived: Info here

EV Incentive rebate was approved. Applied for it 16/9 and was approved 30/9. Payment arrived about 5 days after final approval.

Update on safety rating. Vehicle received Euro NCAP 5 star rating. ANCAP rating release in NZ (5 stars) still pending in Aus.

      • Having a long round trip to work, I'm presuming you're able to charge at work?
Does your work mind, or are they charging you for the usage?

        • +1

No, I don't live in Sydney and travel to HV for work. I live in Newcastle area and travel up the valley for work. My work acan sometimes be 5 mins drive away, sometimes 50~70km away on average. What I meant was, if I needed to go to Sydney right after work, I wanted a car I could leave from Muswellbrook or Scone and drive to Sydney without stopping for charging. 100% confident that this vehicle would make that trip.

I am able to charge it at work, as we have lots of 3 phase, 32A outlets to plug a charger into, but I am pushing the boss for a wall charger and hopefully to get EV certified so we can work on EV's as well.

And the boss wouldn't care, as we have a 250kw industrial sized PV system that we only use about 20% of the power it makes during the day, so charing during the day wouldn't cost them anything really.

          • @pegaxs: Just confirming you got the extended range version or the standard range?

            • @Drakesy: Only the extended range is being delivered at the moment. Standard range are delayed until later this year or early next year. In fact EV Direct were contacting people with SR orders and suggesting they upgrade to ER to get earlier delivery.

            • @Drakesy: 100% Long Range… Like Cliche said below, the SR version isnt going to be here until about Dec/Jan.

Why would anyone buy the SR when it only saved $3000 or less than 10%.

          • @pegaxs: Hi Pegaxs,

            Hope all is well.

It is almost a year since you own this car.

I am interested in getting BYD Atto 3, I would appreciate your current feedback/thoughts on this car.

Particularly I would like to know the following:

            1. What is the actual battery driving range for BYD Atto3 Standard?
            2. How much does the servicing cost?
            3. How much does the comprehensive insurance cost?
            4. What needs to be serviced every year?
            5. Do you get a notification on what needs to be serviced (Something like Tesla)?
            6. What do the safety features look like?

Also, In your post, you mention the MG4, do you recommend MG4 over BYD?

Your comment on this will be highly appreciated.

            Thanks for your time.

      • If you forget to put in on charge at work do you have enough range to get back home?

  • Do those door pod things, presumably tweeters, look as ugly IRL as they do in pics?

    • +2

Yep. Can confirm. They act as door handles as well. But, even as ugly as they are, they are tucked up in an area that once the doors are closed, they are, less ugly?? But, to be honest, I am not going to write off a whole car over its "inner door handles", as ugly as they may be.

      • If they act as handles I don’t have much issue with them, my concern was that they would be fragile and easily damaged if older or disabled people leant in them getting in or out of the car.

        • Nah, you can't really lean on them getting in and out of the car. They are too far forward and too high up on the door.

What I can say about them though is that they feel very solid where they are mounted. Just fugly looking, but I love how they work.

    • +1

I looked at the door handles in person, and I think they look great. Much better than pressing a electric button like on the new Model S/X.

  • How do you find the small dash cluster screen (not the infotainment) for displaying info? From video's I've seen it looks like a hot mess

    • +1

Better than I expected. I too thought the same thing the first time I saw it, why is it so small?? But after driving it, it's big enough. Maybe a tad bit bigger or at least make it full the mount as there seems to be a lot of wasted bezel space.

As for information, I wish there was a way to customise it. I think I would like to Speedo reading to be bigger and ability to remove the active lane and cruise display when it want active. I'll play around with it and see if I can do something.

Other than that, it's easily readable and the information is clear enough. Most of the time I don't even look at it because on the highway I'm on cruise with LKA on anyway, so no need to look at it.

I get that some are going to like it and some not and that there could be some improvements, but I don't really think it's a deal breaker.

      • Sounds decent then. To me it looked a little cluttered and disorganised the way info was presented. If it was customisable that would have been good.

  • It's a great time to experience a new/different car from a financial perspective. If it's good, keep it, and if it's not, sell it and get all your money back and possibly more since that car is so in demand.

    • That's the way I looked at it. In this market, in 3 months if it turns out to be a shitter, I can offload it and basically have lost nothing other than maybe a few bucks and some time.

  • What cost/100kms do you think you're doing with the slow charge?

    • Not sure, not done the calls yet as I have I ly really charged it up twice. I do have a energy monitor hooked up to my house to track household usage as well as generation from the PV.

Last night, from 75% to full, it took from 9pm until 6:30am to charge and it drew a constant draw of about 1.8kW, or slightly less than my kettle does.

25% would be around about 100km of driving at highway speeds

For what it is worth, I did a drive today if 60km, basically all freeway up the Hunter Expressway and it averaged about 16kWh/100km.

  • Why now?

    • +7

      Because "spite", that's why. :D

It was the right time to get into an EV. Right price, fuel set to go up, government incentives, wider acceptance, more charging infrastructure… It just made sense and BYD are not an unknown quantity when it comes to cars or batteries, they have been making both for years.

I have always been a big supporter of EV's for as long as I can remember and have been putting away coins for an EV for about 20 years, now just seemed like a good time to spend them.

And as much as I hate Tesla (Or more so their Baghwan and zealots), I have to admit that without them, this whole EV thing would still be another 50 years away.

  • +1

    average of about 17kWh/100km

Is this city driving/stop start/highway? Evenly mixed? Also curious to know how this figure compares to cough other EV brands cough

That's the interesting part for me. By comparison, my MG HS PHEV is getting 26kWh/100km at highway speeds for basically the entirety of the charge, and I'm carrying a fuel tank/petrol engine/transmission etc that a pure EV doesn't have. And even being 50% less efficient on electricity, I'm still leaps and bounds ahead on petrol mileage.

    • +1

It gives me "lifetime" kWh/100km as well as a "last 50km" readout. Lifetime is currently 18kWh/100km, last 50 it says 16kWh/100km for my drive up the freeway from Newcastle to Maitland.

    • +1

Tesla model 3 is around 13-16kWh/100km.

  • +3

Interior looks a bit garish - don't think style will age well. You can't buy one if you have teenagers - what with the "Build Your Dreams" splayed all over the back. They'd want to be dropped off a few hundred metres from the school and walk the rest.

    • +3

That's my job tomorrow… "de-badging" that rear. What were they thinking?

As for the interior, it's a meh, love it or hate it thing (I'm ambivalent about it.). While I love the layout of the controls and the centre console, just not so much the dash area. I do have to say that at least they improved the colour scheme of the interior over the demo LHD model they had on display. Now that was garish.

      • +2

The dealerships could make some good money by charging extra for the 'badge delete' option

      • Isn't there another "build your dreams" set above the glove box?

I was planning to replace the one on the boot with a "BYD" badge had I did go through with the purchase, but had nothing for the inside one.

        Lol, that’s some dedication.

        • +1

Was thinking it was going to come in the form of "shoe on head", but this is the best I could think of at short notice.

          • +3

@pegaxs: Shoe on bonut would have been good, lost opportunity to start a new OzBargain meme…

            • +4

@mapax: Yeah, that's just taking it a bit to far…

              • +2

@pegaxs: Gold, this meme will be even bigger than the BBQ machine that I started…
                /s

                • @mapax: Hopefully he bought the Shoe on bonut on special.

                  • +1

@WatchNerd: Ironically, shoe came out of this deal. That's how I was able to afford the Atto 3, all because of the amount I saved on this Skecher's sales :D

            • +1

@mapax: The cronut is done, it's all about the bonut now..

        • +3

          Absolutely!

I dont actually know why it comes up like that and in red of all colours. It may have a pressure sensor in the seat to determine the size of the person in the seat or if it's just shopping/work shit. I know in the boss's Mustang, if someone isnt heavy enough in the front seat, it disables the passenger airbags.

      • Wow, good on ya.

        1. Does it sound weird driving a car without the engine sounds?

        2. Were you paying for petrol in your old car? Sounds like u do alot of kms so EV makes sense

        • +5

1: Yes. It takes some getting used too at first when you are sitting at the lights and the car just "exists". Even parked in the driveway before I head to work, it's surreal to turn it on and think "(fropanity) me, is it ready? Is it on or just on accessory??" (Hint: the car is either on or off, there is no "accessory" mode.)

2: Yes, paying myself (unless I was in the work car). And no, not really. I am "average Australian" when it comes to km/year. I do my 13,694km/year and not a cm more.

The reason I bought an EV wasnt just about saving money on petrol, and I'll tell you it wasn't about saving baby fur seals and hugging trees either, it's about quiet, instant torque and about never having to give a petrochemical company another red cent of my hard earned for their bullshit dino-juice. I dont want to have to drive 8km out of my way every time I need to fill up when I can just plug my car in when I get home.

          • @pegaxs: Wow, which suburb do you live which only have servos 8km out of your way? I have at least 4 petrol stations around my house, ~1km in each direction.

            • +1

              @mrvaluepack: 4km there and 4km back… 8km total. I dont live in "urban" Newcastle. :)

            • @mrvaluepack: I understand his pain. I live in a suburb where there is like 5 petrol stations within a kilometer on the same road otherwise I have to drive about 3km to the next nearest. Living in the country you can end up driving pretty far to get petrol.

      • +1

        Well played

      • +1

        Hahahaha 😂😂

  • +1

Just watched this vid. I think both have their pros and cons - but I think range would be a big factor in my decision.

Do you think the Atto 3 stands up well to the MG (if you watch the video)

    • +2

I think he makes some great points, especially with regards to the interior styling. I dont mind the BYD interior because it is so different, but understand that for some, it's a bit confronting. Exterior wise, I think the BYD is a much nicer looking car.

I do like how the MG comes with everything ready to go such as AA/ACP and sat nav.

This new MG EV model was my other go to and I had a pre-order in for both, but the thing that convinced me was things like BYD had a "long range" version and it was slated to arrive sooner. Also, I wanted the BYD blade batteries over the MG ones.

If I was looking again for an entry level EV, these two, the BYD and the MG, would both be on my shopping list, and I think it would be hard to decide and it would basically come down to ride comfort and living area design.

Now, if I had to pick between the Atto 3 and the new MG4, I would 100% get the MG4. And as soon as the BYD Atto 4/Seal/whatever is announced, I will probably put in a pre-order for that as well pending on how well the Atto 3 holds up in that time, and give the Atto 3 to the wife.

frpm what I’ve read so far it seems you aren’t expecting heaps out of this car and have been pleasantly surprised. Did you go in with low expectations?

I know I’d be pretty annoyed if I bought a premium brand and the audio system was a bit off or the fit and finish wasn’t great, but I don’t get too annoyed at my $120 touchscreen head unit when it glitches.

Hope I see more of these on the roads soon (maybe yours included being in the Newie area)

    • +1

know I’d be pretty annoyed if I bought a premium brand and the audio system was a bit off or the fit and finish wasn’t great,

      Telsa?

    • +6

I went in with a blank mind but leaning slightly towards the "Well, it is probably going to be a shitbox/tinny/plasticy/cheap feeling vehicle." mindset. I didn't go in with "Proton/Lada/Peugeot/Land Rover" build quality expectations, but certainly with very early Great Wall/Chery quality in mind.

Let's just say that when I went to look at them the first time, I was a little impressed. It felt solid. The interior felt good (albeit gaudy), the doors felt like real doors and not made out of used coke cans. All the panels lined up with no weird gaps, and it definitely gave me that whole "Made in Korea" build quality vibe. Not quite Mazda/Toyota, but certainly Kia/Hyundai (not Daewoo/SangYong). Left me very impressed for a Chinese built vehicle.

I do know a heap of people who have orders from the Newcastle area and there will be a dealer opening up very soon over in Cardiff, next to Toyota on the corner there where Myall road is. 100% go over and have a look when it is opened. So, I do think you will soon see a couple of them getting around down there soon.

  • OP can your car tow a trailer, tow a boat, or even get you out to your favourite camping spot with your family?

    • +2

OP can your car tow a trailer

No. Not because it cant, but because mine doesn't have a tow hitch :D

A tow kit will be available soon, and I would imagine it would be rated about the same as any other vehicle of this size. I'm betting it will be up to/around 750kg rated.

can your car… tow a boat

It would tow a boat (depends on what size. Certainly not a 34' fishing trawler, but maybe a runabout.) It has way more torque than any other vehicle in it's class (about 310Nm) but towing may severely kill the range. I have a work car or a work ute if I need to tow anything.

get you out to your favourite camping spot

And camping spot, well, that depends, would you get there in a Hyundai Kona, Yaris Cross, Mazda CX3 or other similar sized small 2WD SUVs? The best part is, if you went camping, you can use the car and the V2L connector to power your creature comforts, like a TV. I wouldn't go more than about 200km from your nearest power point though. Camp at a caravan park and use your charger from one of their powered caravan sites?

      with your family?

As for load, it has a tare weight of 1750kg and a gross weight of 2160kg, so you could fit yourself, your partner and a few kids as well as all the camping gear up to about 410kg worth in total. There is a joke in there somewhere about mother-in-laws and "only 410kg of load carrying capacity."

  • how much is your servicing?

    • Mine? Hopefully through work, $0 :D Just need to get EV qualified.

First service is free, pretty standard, and then there are two options. A low km usage service schedule and a high km usage schedule. I'll be sticking to low usage because of my "work car", until I lose that later (wanna swap it for a wall charger and free charging at work).

Through a BYD dealer; (more info here)

Light usage is $189/year for 5 years or up to 60,000km
Standard usage is average of $299/year (highest being $447, lowest being $189)

Other places that are not BYD service centres may be much cheaper.

      • what do they do on the service?

        • Yep… Not much, that's for sure. No oil or filer to change. No air filters. I think there is going to be a lot of "inspect/check" and that is about it. Maybe coolant every 2 years. A cabin filter every 12 months. Plug in and check battery SOH. Make sure the tyres are wearing evenly and that the brake calipers aren't seized from under use.

  • Is the traction/grip as bad as the reviewers say?

Please keep us updated on how the battery does in 10 years time. 🤣

    • +4

No. In the wet, meh… not really. Unless it is in "Sport" mode and you are deliberately trying to spin the tyres, it will 100% spin the tyres. In Normal or Eco, no. These tyres are not "bad" in the wet, it's just they are not "great". They do hang on quite well and I didnt lose any cornering feel in the wet, so I dont think they are just going to let go, but 310Nm of torque from any car in the wet is going to have the ability to spool up even really good tyres.

@system #setreminder 17/9/2032 "Report to @hex7272 about BYD battery degradation"

      • @system #setreminder 17/9/2032 "Report to @hex7272 about BYD battery degradation"

LOL Is this an actual Ozbargain feature!? How did I not know..

  • If you could go back in time would you not buy it?

    • Nope. Would happily buy it… "at this point"…Although, check back in with me after a few weeks, a few months and then a year. Let's see if I still have the same feeling.

      • +1

        @pegaxs ‘oh what a feeling’?

    • +3

      If?
Does the BYD not reach 142kph?

  • +2

My one hesitation with with non-Korean/Japanese/German/US vehicles, whether valid or not, would be the safety side of things. Whilst combustion engine vehicles likely have a higher percentage chance of fire over the existing reputable electric vehicle manufacture models, I wonder if the same applies for the discount entrants?

I'm curious if they have cut safety corners compared to say a Tesla on the battery system?

    • +3

      tesla buys batteries from byd,
toyota basically rebadged a byd as its first electric vehicle

    • BYD's blade battery is actually quite well known for its safety credentials, there are many tests done to them that you can check on YouTube etc. And as wal990 pointed out Tesla is buying batteries from BYD to put into their cars, in addition to buying from CATL which is another well-known Chinese battery maker.

    • I wonder if the same applies for the discount entrants?

Will find out mid next month when Euro-NCAP release their crash tests on the Atto 3…

I'm curious if they have cut safety corners compared to say a Tesla on the battery system?

Like others have said, Tesla are now (mod: spelling) using BYD batteries… and BYD are probably one of, if not the biggest battery maker in the world at the moment, and having been making batteries for a pretty long time.

      • +2

BYD is 2nd largest battery manufacturer at ~20% market share and CATL is the largest one. The 2 has more than 60% of the market share i think.

  • "Around fast curves, it's a whale" deal breaker for me

    • +4

      its not a Honda S2000

    • +5

      LOL. Ok, champ.

  • -1

How much dollar value would it be for one full charge using electrical at home? $5 for a full charge?

    • -3

As a guide, Tesla Model 3 full charge cost around $25 at home :)

      • +1

You need a new electricity plan. The model 3/y battery is roughly 60kWh. You'd have to be paying 40c/kWh to hit that mark. I charge off-peak at 13c/kWh so if my battery was completely drained at 0% it would cost ~$8. You should be able to find a plan which offers charging at 20c/kWh at least.

      • +3

My Model 3 has a 55kW/h battery, and realistically charging to 90% you're probably putting 40-50kWh in. Worst case, at 28c/kWh it's about $12.
With solar, almost all my charging is done during the day and if you consider the $0.06c I lose in FiT it's really about $3 for 300km.

    • Depends… I have solar to use up during the day and at night, I can set the vehicle to charge only after a certain time, so off peak and when everything else in the house is turned off.

      So, for your maths, you can use this;

It has a 60kWh battery. On the granny charger (it's about as draw heavy as a cheap kettle) it will get you about 25% in 10 hours.

      60 / 4 = 15kWh

      My retailer charges me $0.20/kWh, so;

      15 x $0.2 = $3

To get a full charge, multiply that by 4 to get about $12 if totally done within Off Peak.

Mind you, I could have totally messed up these figures, so if anyone finds a mistake with this, please let me know :)

Your estimate will be close, but you need to account for charging inefficiencies - typically 10-15% of the power you use charging is wasted (see for example https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a36062942/evs-explaine…).

So in charging your car to 25%, the battery now has 15kWh of energy, but you have drawn more than that (maybe 16-17kWh) from the socket.

Cheers! I know out there on the interwebs that someone would have a calculator that you could just plug all these numbers into and it would spit out a more reliable and accurate number.

        • +1

That is true, but even at 25% charge loss, it is still so insignificant compared to petrol price.

      • Who is your retailer if you dont mind me asking?

        • Um.. EnergyAust. We are tacked onto AusGrid here. I would have to drag out my contract/last bill to get the actual rates I am charged…

Think I will wait until the Veedub ID3 hits our shores. Then I will compare! But it is going to be interesting to see how your ownership experience is going to be like.Njoy it anyway!

I liked the VW ID3 or if you like that… go down and get a look at the new Cupra Born… very cool looking car.

      • Unfortunately I have just bought a new car in the last two months or so(HRV Hybrid) pretty well stoked with it, but there may well be an EV in my future down the road.

        • Dont worry, by the time the HRV needs replacing, you are going to be spoiled for choice in the EV sphere.

@pegaxs: The market is ever expanding.More than happy to ‘sit’ on the fence for a few years.

Thank you for putting your money where your mouth is… such a rare thing these days. Good review, I would be really interested in a 6month and 1-year one.

    • +4

If I have any issues, trust me, I am going to update this forum post. I will try and give a 1 month update and then 6 and then 12 months…

Would you buy it again with your lived experience?
Cheers pegaxs. Drove plenty of cars as a mystery shopper but stopped that. limited EV exposure aside from Tesla's

Love torquey cars. concerned about EV Tco over 10 yrs.

    On the electric fence

    • So far, yes, without hesitation. Knowing what I know now, I would still 100% buy this car, and I am kind of glad I didn't pull the trigger on one of the run-out, last season model MG's when they were offered.

And if you love torquey cars… you are going to love EV's. Almost everything I have now is EV. My motorcycles, scooters and car. And I dont care for the environment, I buy electric vehicles because of that torque. (Oh, and not having to give fuel companies any money.)

      On the electric fence

Stay on it for the moment… I have a feeling that the EV space with technology is about to take some huge advances. It's almost like every day that some new cheaper, more energy dense, lighter, more common material, higher power, more efficient something is mentioned for EV's…

Great response. Thanks have a great Sunday.

I also think there is too much greenwashing out there. paper straws in plastic cups.

My EV motivation is more convenience. I can plan to charge, could charge at not my cost at work etc. Keeping one ICE at home for road trips etc.

The OzB in me says the realisable value for ICE cars will drop further with more MSM greenwashing but will also acknowledge that demand will grow so 3rd gen cars are of interest too. suggest it will be 10% of sales in 5 years.

        re China

The Huawei and Oppo phones imo are better than Apple so its only a matter of time when better, Korean and Chinese alternatives are in abundance and with subsidies. Its like everyone buying overpowered diesel utes when not on the tools for me. Interested in the modding / hacking aspect too.

  • Thanks for posting a great review! I ordered one (LR white) in August with delivery maybe at the end of the year (I'm in Melbourne!).

Have you tried side loading Google Android installer to get Google apps (such as Play and Maps) loaded?

Have you considered getting the windows tinted to reduce internal heat during the warmer months (and hence minimize AC usage)?

    • Have you tried side loading Google Android installer to get Google apps (such as Play and Maps) loaded?

No. I have not. I wanted to give them a chance to bring out the update themselves first and see how that goes. If they drag their heels or stall, I'll just install it myself.

Also, there is no "GSF" (Google Services Framework.) so anything that relies on it (ie: Google Maps) will not work, even if you install them, and certianly not Google Installer. Maybe Aurora Store app would work?

Have you considered getting the windows tinted

Already booked in. Getting ceramic tint that is supposed to cut down a large portion of IR heat. The dealer wanted $1,200+ from memory, my local guy, who does all our vehicles, was only $500.
