  • Can Apple store price matching?? Because of colour preferences.

    • Yes

I called apple. They only offer price marching the same colour model :(

  • Price match at OW first thing tomorrow morning for extra 5% off?

      I just did - $1281.55 for base M1 model.

    • Good guys don't price beat anymore. They changed their policy. only price match

Can get a further 10% off buying TCN Teen/Her gift card at Woolies from tomorrow

    Still cheaper at AOC

    • +2

      What’s AOC?

      • +1

https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/store (pretty much an education store)

        • And going the route of taking TCN cards to JB to buying Apple cards makes this the best possible price anywhere. You can add as many as needed to your Apple wallet (or use them for normal Edu pricing in-store).

The best possible price across the board will be during a 15% off TCN cards sale.

          • @Techie4066: Can you buy apple cards with TCN cards?

            • +1

@tc423: Yes. Just swipe it at the terminal with the PIN scratched and treat it like any other card. Don't tell the cashier it's a "gift" card because that might throw them off. It's allowed.

              • @Techie4066: Hi, do you know whether you can purchase Apple gift cards at JB Hifi using JB gift cards?

          • @Techie4066: Does Apple check if you are a student? I would like to do this but don't want anything to happen to my Apple account.

            • @DaBigPapi: Well I'm a student so I'm not in the same boat, but I don't think they check for online orders.

              • @Techie4066: Got ya. Well it may still be worth getting TCN cards and using them to buy Apple cards. I do have a trade in though so I am not sure if that will cause any issues down the line…

I wonder if this is a sign the new MBP M2s are around the corner

    • +1

That would be a safe bet as the high end MBP models were updated every single year for at least the past decade.

      • nice! im really stuck deciding between this macbook m1 VS this intel $1040 laptop below
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/724496

macbook will be the better quality machine hands down, my only concern is that i cannot install cracked microsoft office and video editing software on the mac m1. also slightly smaller screen at 13.3

the intel obviously bigger screen and has windows (im used to windows), those are the only 2 positives.

        • M1 is more powerful and has more cores than the windows laptop you’ve linked, but then again if you need a bigger screen and more ram I’d say go for the windows.

I haven’t had any issues with my M1 Air, good battery and ram management even with 8gb. The screen size just grew onto me and much more portable.

          • @Snacky: first world problems, yeh i mean bigger screen is ideal, but than i read about screen ghosting issues on the intel by some people when subtitles are displayed, and some say no there is no issues, than i read about the fanless m1, for years i dreamt of a fanless powerful laptop now it exists, if the macbook could install windows with bootcamp like the old intel macs, it would make this decision 10 times easier.. im also sure the macbook would outlast the intel. still cant decide smh
im wondering how much work i can get done on the macbook if i cant installed cracked software on it

Can't seem to find a M2 Macbook air with 16GB of Ram, anyone know if they will do one in store?

    • +1

Looks like there is only M2 Macbook Pro variants atm

    • +2

AFAIK, for customized RAM, you have to order from Apple Store.

  • How do these compare to new chips used in PC laptops?

    • +1

Pretty well actually, much more power efficient causing less heat and performs on par with i7 and i5s

    • +3

CPU benchmark M1/M2 are very good in compare to chips in standard PC laptops

But user experience cannot be compared given M1/M2 Mac cannot install Microsoft Windows
(it might be able to install Windows 10/11 on ARM and run via Parallels Desktop, but there's no license copy atm)

So, you have to stick with MacOS, which is great for office use, web browsing, programming, video editing etc.

But for gamers, games available on MacOS are so much less compare to Windows

Also, if you have any specific software to use, make sure they have a MacOS version otherwise they could not be run

  • Nice. I just started up my new Macbook Air M1 that arrived today which I bought with the student discount. I presume the discount would be much the same.

  • Bought one for daughter yesterday for $1717 from Amazon, they dropped to $1709 as well. It should have been delivered today, if not shipped by morning I'm going to cancel and reorder.

If you buy from Amazon don't forget Cashrewards, 1.5%.

  • For use as a development machine, is 8GB RAM really enough, particularly when shared with GPU? I mean my phone as 50% more RAM…

    • depends on what type of programmings and which IDE
Based on my exp using M1 Mac mini (8GB ram / 256GB storage)
running xcode is fine, visual studio code is fine (eg. for React, Node JS etc)
visual studio on Mac will occasionally having out of ram issue
and similar experience with Android Studio

    • I'm working on a 2019 macbook pro with 8gig. It struggles occasionally when running android/ios simulators from Android Studio. Visual Studio is ok, but VS on windows really is nicer. If you have to bring up parallels it starts to strain if you're trying to do other stuff. Parallels is definitely superior to fusion though.

    • If you need to run docker, probably not.

If you are doing general web dev or normal/basic native app development … you can make do.

      Ideally you would have more.

  • any deals on the new apple watch?

  • +1

Nice, got mine at officeworks this morning with price match for $1,623.55

    No 16GB RAM airs? Disappointed

    • +1

Yeah 8GB with unusable for me on the m1. 16gb works flawlessly. 8GB is not enough anymore.

But they know that. Don’t they.

  • +2

I bought one of the M1 MacBook Airs last year and the screen cracked without any impact a year later. Apple store declined to acknowledge the issue even though it seems to be widespread. Currently pursuing a case via ACCC.
There are numerous similar complaints online both in Apple forums and other forums where users have been complaining about cracked displays (links given below) without any impact. There is also a class action suit filed in USA for this issue. I really hope this issue is fixed in M2s.

    • Apple forums and other forums
    • Class Action reference, 5:21-cv-07109, Almeida v. Apple, Inc. and related links
    • Is it just the M1 Airs or the M1 Pros as well?

  • Only 8GB for all mac? Can we upgrade the memory to 16GB from JB?

    • Unfortunately no
the marketing promo explicitly says it Excludes customised to Order
so only those standard models are on discount

Better to get from AOC store if you want to add memory / storage

    • Just get a MacBook Pro haha

  • Anyone tried with iPhones?

    Should I get the Air M2 256GB orver the Air M2 512GB? $405 different for 256GB extra.
    Thanks

    • +2

M2 256gb is way slower than m2 512gb as Apple has decided to use a single slot of SSD , this issue wasn’t happening in M1 MBA 256gb

      https://www.macrumors.com/2022/06/27/m2-macbook-pro-256gb-ss…

      So either get M1 256gb or M2 512gb

      • +1

That's good to know. Thanks @littlesoldier

      • +1

to add to that point, yes he is right 512gb and above, and if you are buying the 512gb ask your self if its worth paying 700 dollars extra for %10 faster cpu. most reviews say to buy the m1
