  • Considering macOS will eventually do Intel support, I wouldn’t be building a hackintosh any more.

    • +2

Correct, but still a decent way to access tons of memory on MacOS, like 128gb if necessary.

    • +5

Have I woken up in 2005?

      • +1

Typo, meant to be “drop Intel support”.

    • Hang on, what? They moved platforms to ARM and in-house - ah just saw your addition. Well yeah may as just use linux, why bother with Mac unless you need the latest office or Adobe suite

    • Or in my case ryzentosh.

Just keep in mind performance will suffer if you're on a pcie gen 3 motherboard.

    • +7

Not sure why you got downvoted because you're completely right and it's not obvious. I would never touch this card with a motherboard that can't do PCI-e 4.0. https://youtu.be/rGG2GYwnhMs?t=1111 Stuttery garbage.

      • Damn. I was considering this deal and wasn't aware of this. 8GB model isn't too bad with the difference but the 4GB is shocking.

      • +1

its true that gen3 will slow it down but tell me if im wrong… can you get an eqivilent / better priced card even if this is bottlenecked at pcie3?

      • That’s really surprising, I wonder if it’s just bad drivers

        • The problem is mostly solved by the 8GB version of the 6500 XT. It suggests a hardware transfer speed limitation.

    • Yup. Absolutely no clue why AMD made these x4 cards, if they were x8 then there would have been no problems running on a pci-e 3 board.

  • Finally, prices are dropping. Hopefully the 6400 or 1650 will be a good bit under 200 soon.

    • 1650 classic and solid. Good pick

  • How would this compare to a 1060 3gb? Those were going for $100-$130 on facebook marketplace a few weeks back when I checked. Granted most of them would probably need new thermal paste at this stage which is a few dollars but also a bit stressful if it's your first time taking the card apart.

    • The secondhand market is full of mining cards

    • +2

You should be able to get a 1060 6GB version for that price off Ebay (100-130) right now, and as far as I know it will be superior to this heavily gimped card.

Edit: Turns out they are similar in performance with the 6500XT coming out slightly on top (but a bit slower in some particular games than the 1060 6GB). But considering you can have the 1060 for about $100 less, I still think it's the better option, since3 its nearly half the price for only slightly less overall performance.

  • +1

    Great paperweight

    • yeh this isnt a worth it at any price unless you really need a $50 card that just needs to output a desktop

      • +1

Unless you're using it in a pc with PCIE4 then its fine as a budget cheap as chips card….

But no lets keep just pretending it has no use case

        • thats a lot of "ifs"

          just buy something not shit

          • +2

@tonyjzx: One if?? Since when is one alot lol.

Whats the equivalent card that you'd buy, new with warranty for the same perf and price for a pcie4 rig?

            • -6

@Dvbargain: really dont care about shithouse cards for shithouse rigs mate… that's your ballpark

              • +1

@tonyjzx: Hahahahahaha that's the type of response I thought I'd get.

                Ya can't argue with dumb.

              • +1

@tonyjzx: With that kind of childish response, it sounds like your typical ballpark is the resident playdoh room with corks on the ends of everything pointy, poisony and burny…

                • -3

@UncleRico: yeah i admit i have a deficit on low speed shitboxes and shiitty cards

you two talk amongst yourselves, there are dozens of yous

                  • @tonyjzx: Why are you even posting here if you have no interest on the cards? You're very entertaining lol

                    • +1

@Dvbargain: Safe bet it’s not because his girlfriend has gone out for the night…

                  • +1

                    @tonyjzx: “Dozens of yous”? LOL!

Is this our fate for another two weeks of school holidays?

                • +1

@UncleRico: If there was a competitor at same price point that worked just as well on pcie3 and pcie4 then this card would be "shit" in comparison… But as far as im aware there isn't. Sounds like Tony just realised the same lol

                  • -1

@Dvbargain: i really dont know and I seriouisly dont want to know

these are truly edge cases… with all the reviews out there i cant understand why someone would even bother to find a place to shoehorn this shit

                    i mean congrats i guess?

  • +1

"no h265 coder, no AV1 coder"
    Thanks for adding this!!

    • Meh, unless you really need it

      • +1

i dont think any youtuber is really gonna encode with this potato

        • They aren’t George Lucas though haha, software encode will be ok, it will just take longer

      • This is the first time I've seen in someones post about HEVC and AV1, I have to go looking myself.

        • thing is most midrange or better cards have free and really damn good encoders on board

i think these gpus consist of some silicon w/ faulty encoder circuits so they're disabled

but its largely hobbled by that poor bus and the 64 bit memory

  • This or a GTX 1660?

    • I'd go the GTX 1660.

      • the 1660 is seriously from a pre pre covid era but its really a foregone conclusion

  • Why would you get a 1660? Better off going for a 2070/2070 super

  • +1

I don't think the 6500XT is out of the box supported for hackintoshes. Perhaps there is some work around?

    • OMG!
I just want to save some money from 6600!
      Waste all the money then

      • Thanks @sargorn
Cancellation applied, hope it’s not too late

  • I would go for a 5700 or if your lucky for 5700XT second hand over this… Ive seen many of them with 0 bids in $285-300 range on eBay… (ending soon being the sort settings)

  • trash. avoid like the plague.
