Brother Colour Laser Printer with Scanner MFC-L3745CDW $330 C&C Only @ The Good Guys Commercial (Membership Required)

1050

Surprised by this price. It's about $100 less than I was expecting for a Brother laser colour printer with scanner, duplex and wireless.

The L3750 is $448 from OfficeWorks, which seems the best price going for it. From the specs on the Brother website, the only differences that I can see is the L3745 is 2 pages per minute slower, 200g lighter and 4 decibels quieter.

There are details on joining TGG Commercial here. There are many posts praising Brother laser printers on OzBargain.

No, it's just tired of that joke

      • +6

        No joke.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

    • +1

      Is it heavy ?

      Product Weight (kg):23.4

        thanks…

      • you shouldn't answer jv's bad joke

I've got the MFC-L3770CDW and the toner alarm is complete rubbish. I bought replacement toner when it went off and it got stuck/delayed in transit during covid, and so I found a way to reset the "counter", did that, and I haven't even installed the replacements I bought…since lockdown!

So when your indicator thingy telling you to replace toner goes off, find how to reset it and enjoy the extra ink until its actually empty.

    • I don't have that same printer, but i tried "a reset technique" for my Brother printer, and it did not work.

So, I ended up having to buy after-market toner.

    • Ink? It's toner, my bro, but thanks for sharing the tips & trix

    • same, did this for L2730DW and got a few more months out of the toner.

  • I've got this, had them price match commerical and used gift cards, goes hard. Wifi connectivity sucks like always, printing images is also pretty bad
    Perfect for a laser printer

    • +32

I am not able to tell if its a good review or bad. Cant just be me!!

      • +24

        yes

      • +10

        It's chaotic-neutral.

      • That'll teacherer you!!!

      • +2

        It's a bad review.
But according to the review, it's an excellent printer.
        So don't buy!

      • It's clearly a good review or bad. What confuses you?

    • +1

I have this one too. Takes many seconds to "retrieve data" when printing over Wi-Fi since it only supports 802.11n.

      • I've given up and just plug it in, think my UDMP might be playing havoc

        • I use an EAP 610. The dashboard reports 72Mbps Rx so there's no real reason it should take so long.

I'll have to hardwire it at some point but for now it's good enough.

      • +1

Can't say the others are any better though, found similar with Canon, HP,.
If you stop them going to sleep, helps slightly as they put the radio into some sort of low power mode, but yes there is a delay printing WiFi.

They delay has nothing to do with 802.11n, infact it's ideal for a printer.
From a latency perspective ac and ax are only milliseconds faster, you couldn't perceive the differences.
If you have a really large file then, there's an argument to taking longer to transmit, but equally the processor on the printer receiving the transmission is also normally the bottleneck.

      • I have a Brother MFC-L2730DW which is shown as always offline. Cant wifi print. I have to turn off and on it to bring it online and print. Any idea how I can get it to be always online.

  • Thaks op, ordered one as I'm in Melbourne tomorrow. Hopefully it will be ready to pick up in time.

I've never used GG Commercial before. I note on the invoice under billing details it says Gday Parks Adelaide. My name is not on the invoice at all. Is that usual?

    • +2

      Yes that's usually what happens.

      • +1

        Thanks 😃

    • +1

Yep that's been on my invoices on several orders.

      • +2

        Thanks 😃

Sometimes I wonder if the Officeworks models are exactly the same just with fudged specs so they don't have to price match. Like how Masters used to get some brands to change the model number slightly.

I did a counter reset the other day too on the 3770

    • they definitely do

    • Yes, Officeworks absolutely do this where possible.

    • Yes, they do that all the time. Unique model number with a tiny change in the spec and it constitutes a 'new model' that's exclusive to OW, thus they don't need to pricematch.

    • +5

Bunnings does the same. 'Lowest prices are just the beginning…" yeah right.

      • +1

Same company so not a surprise

      • My MFC-L3745CDW has a USB port and a USB option in the scan page. I haven't actually tried it but I don't see a reason it wouldn't work.

        • +1

If you have the MFC-L3750CDW, the prints/scans will only be available from Officeworks.

        • Just received and installed and tested. Printing and scanning to USB works a treat

    • Bunning do this heaps, especially on power tools, however they often really have lower specs and are trying to market them as comparable to better speced models.

    • Brother partners get exclusive rights over specific models or specific models in certain regions. In this case Officeworks get models that have an extra feature or two in the firmware and can sell it as a different model.

  • Have the same printer and it is pretty decent

  • +4

I have this one and it is excellent. Never had a connection problem, never had a paper jam. Toner lasts ages, cheap per page. It just works. Perfect for a small office. Thoroughly recommend it over any other printer.

    • +1

They make robust printers. Got mine 9 years ago still working, can’t find any excuses to replace it lol

      • +1

I'll one up you. My 2040HL from one 2006 Ozbargain deal in is still working ;)

    • I think the story is the same for many, after a childhood of only $29 inkjets that baited their parents every year and monthly $40 inks.

A $299 brother toner that lasted 6 years must seem like magic.

  • Printing and paper is becoming obsolete though?

    • says u

    • +5

How will I get my faxes?

    • Fun fact i was at tafe in the mid 90s and some people where touting this. Paper and printing. Its going to be obsolete. Fast forward to nearly 3 decades. And guess what we still printing on paper.

      • Becoming obsolete… So for example if paper usage halves every three years then there will always be some residual paper use but it is essentially continuously becoming obsolete.

        • If you want to put it that way in then it will happen eventually. Just saying its been nearly 3 decades and we are no where near it. I predict many more decades we will still be printing on paper.

          • @xoom: I think usage is pretty residual now? Maybe that's just my anecdotal experience, but office paper prices have decreased over the years, so demand has surely gone down bigtime whereas everything else increases with inflation.

Cardboard/paper usage is increasing for packaging etc, but that's not office/home printing.

  • I'm genuinely surprised that there is actual stock in my area

  • +1

    Damn no stock in ACT.

  • +1

Not every improvement is a positive one. Case in point:

    and 4 decibels quieter.

This means breaking a wind will be audible while printing (that 4 decibels mattered, damnit!). You could no longer print a blank page and let one slip out without being noticed.

With this model you've to drag the chair, cough, and print a page all at the same time to silence a ripper.

  • +3

I've had this printer for about a year now. I print from my phone and wirelessly from laptops with no issues. Great printer

    • +1

Have you had to do a counter reset (is it easy and how does one do it)? I just watched a bunch of reviews and it seems the printer lies about the ink remaining in the cartridge and also is able to tell if you use non-genuine inks (basically disabling you from printing)

      • I haven't had to replace the ink yet as I only have small print jobs on a weekly basis.

  • +8

Important tip is that dont update your drivers for this printer. Brother has been disabling non genuine toners recently.

    • Which firmware breaks it? These ones ship with pretty new firmware…

  • +1

Highly recommend Brother MFCs. The best part is you can get full set of after-market toner for less than $100. I have been using MFC9330CDW for past eight years without any issues

  • +1

I’d kill for a Color laser MFC that does a3 paper size in this price bracket

    • +13

      How discreet are you?

    • Geez, kill? Are you Methodman or Methoman?

    • +1

      What are your rates?

      • +4

C'mon guy, he already told you. A colour laser MFC that does A3 paper size. He'll even PAY you for it. As long as it's around $330. Great deal, IMO. Should be posted as separate option.
"Hitman for hire in exchange for A3 capable colour laser MFC. $330 cashback."

        • Hmm, the cheapest I could find is OKI C834NW, which is around $1,350, so there is a $1,000+ out of pocket cost. Hard pass, they're not worth that much.

        • lol the second I hit 'post' I knew I'd stuffed up and someone would point this out. Thanks for finally putting me out of my misery haha

    • For this exact reason I ended up going for the inkjet a3 model MFC-J6930DW

Works flawlessly and self cleans the jets.
      Highly recommend it.

      • Yep this is the exact printer I’ve got and agree with all your points.

Just can’t beat that quality you get from laser.

I’d buy a photocopier if it wasn’t for the maintenance costs - cheaper to commute into work

  • Not available for delivery. Stock decreasing in NSW

  • +2

If anyone is looking for information on accessing TGGC, the forum post linked in OP’s description is out of date. There is a new wiki page that is slightly more up-to-date here.

  • +3

This doesn't have duplex scanning (if that's important)

  • For Vic pick up I'm only getting Pakenham, anyone else have collection closer to the CBD?

    • Even Pakenham showing as no stock available for me :(

    • I got mine from Northland on Saturday. Just check every day and eventually something will show up.

  • +4

Looking at the specs, some things I found relevant for my own needs:
    - doesn't support duplex scanning (only duplex printing)
    - doesn't support native scan to e-mail (instead it supports scan to email via communication with software on your PC)
    - doesn't support scan to SharePoint Online (Office365). Can only scan to an on-premises SharePoint installation
    - not a dumb/GDI printer, which is a good thing
It otherwise seems good for the price, but I myself would be paying a bit more for at least duplex scanning.

    • +2

+1 for duplex scanning. Always saves so much time + effort. It does appear to support cloud services though e.g. I can see in the manual that it can upload to places like Box and Dropbox.

      • +1

Yes, duplex scanning is a great thing. I guess the thing with SharePoint-Online/OneDrive is that many companies already have it for all users (compared to Box / Dropbox). Obviously more relevant in a corporate setting.

    • How much is a bit more for all of those I guess topendish type features?

      • $582 for the next model up MFC-L8690CDW - not really a bit more, its quite a bit more.

        • +7

I think for $250 I could probably turn the paper over myself

          • @4foxache: I ended up going for the 8690 when this was out of stock everywhere and we wanted to move off inkjet for a home office. I read some reports that the toner is higher capacity on the 8690 so it pays back over 3 to 4 years with the larger initial toner.

      • Native scan-to-email use to be a feature on Brother's MFC's even going down to their $250 model. In the last 5-10 years they have gradually turned it in to a more premium offering unfortunately.

    • +1

I've had the MFC-L3770CDW for a few years and I use it's duplex scanning features as well as it's native scan to email features all the time. It also has the auto document feeder so you can just drop a multipage double sided doc in and press a shortcut button to have it scanned and emailed to you

      • Yep, that one has good features. Do you remember how much you paid? OW sells it for $529. I reckon it was significantly less than that in the past.

        • I paid $443 for mine - I got OW to price beat it on special somewhere else

    • If you are looking at doing some duplex scanning see if your local library will let you do it with their printers. The ones in Yarra do.

  • My dad wants one but not sure worth the drive for click n collect.

  • +1

No duplex scanning kills the deal for me :-(

    • +3

I got the 3750 from officeworks and it does duplex scanning via the included software…. so at first you do a batch scan of all the odd numbered pages, then batch scan all the even numbered pages, then the software merges it all for you and presto, double sided scanned document

      • That's a smart workaround.

      • +1

There is a good, free and simple program called NAPS that can do this : https://www.naps2.com/
        - Scan all pages in - first do the front pages, and then the back pages
        - Click "Reorder" button -> Alternate Interleave
        - Save PDF

      • When you truly start using a duplex scanner, you’d never go back.

        • Of course… In the office we have a $10K machine…. Load it with a 100 page double sided document for scanning and within around a minute it is all done and emailed to you. However I don't have the space for such a large machine in my home office.

          • @Logical: I got one, same size as this machine - does duplex scanning. only regret is didn't find a good deal :D

  • Couldn't find any stocks in Victoria and no delivery is available!

  • The toner batteries are so annoying, my MFC-3770CDW toners run flat about every 6 months. I recently replaced the batteries for a second time on the same toners but printer still won't detect half of them. Wish I got the refillable Epson inkjet instead.

    • Batteries in the toner? What the?

We've had our 3770CDW since 2020, with one toner (black) replacement. Just bought an ebay special.

It's worked a treat otherwise. Wouldn't recommend it for photo printing though.
