  • Just FYI, it is more expensive to fly to Singapore from Perth rather than booking to KL via Singapore (You will be on the same flight). This is probably to compete with AirAsia which is a much better airline.

    • Is AirAsia really better than scoot though?

      • +1

Flew once with each one. Scoot was definitely better but i’d say they are in the same league.

        • +2

Yeah, I've flown with both a couple of times too and found Scoot to be slightly better, mostly because the 787 was nicer than AirAsia's A330s and A320s. Granted I think both are good for what you pay

      • Airbus better safety record. Remember 737 max?

        • 787 doesn’t have the MCAS system that was causing the issues in the 737-MAX, and also has a better safety record than the a330.

      • +1

Scoot bans you from bringing outside water onboard and charges you $8 a bottle. Same for food, $12+ for a microwave meal with a "strict" no outside food policy. Scoot is almost always more expensive and the only advantage is the 787's are nice, being on their a320 from Perth - Singapore was one of the worst flights I have ever had and they often change the plane last minute without warning.

I've flown both 20+each, and never have I had a poor experience with AirAsia.

        • I also had bad experience with Scoot about bringing food and water onboard. I wonder if they have terms about that written somewhere on website or in ticket conditions?

          • +1

@kctt: I believe it does say it during the checkout process on the website

            • @Nand0sx: Wow I will avoid Scoot if possible on principle. Free water should be the least provided even with low cost carrier. Clearly people have to fork out some money for water if they don't smuggle onboard a bottle of water. Flying 8 hours with no water can have serious consequence.

              • @kctt: They don't ban outside water but they do say outside food is not allowed. With water it's no different to any other airline, no fluids through security but you can just take your empty bottle and fill it up at the gate before boarding.

In reality they aren't that strict with food either and it's not like they are gonna turn the plane around cause someone brought a sandwich on board. If you try boarding with cooked food I imagine they tell you to get lost but otherwise you should be fine. They don't search your carry on or anything lol.

I flew Scoot last month (GC to Singapore return) and both times the people beside me had bags of outside food including chips, popcorn and sandwiches, and ate it without issue. Same with water, almost everyone filled their bottle at the gate once they went past security.

                • @Blokeinhisundies: That is if water facilities are available after security, quite often they are broken or not available at Changi (I have been there 20 times this year alone). Where scoot differs from other airlines is they can and have taken regular bottled water off of customers during flights.

I have personally seen scoot cabin crew take packaged food off customers and returned it only during disembarkation. You might get lucky and have a cabin crew that doesn't uphold scoot policies or you might get stuck on or you might get stuck on a 13-hour flight without food.

Again, I have seen both occur.

              • @kctt: Do any other LCC's provide free water? I think it's very poor to not allow people to bring their own onboard, but I don't think they should have to provide it for free, they should just let people bring their own.

    • +1

That is a pretty normal practice in the aviation industry. People tend to prefer direct flights so it is cheaper sometimes to book another leg to a destination where you can fly direct with competing airlines.

    • Flown both numerious times, prefer Scoot over AirAsia any day

I applied for my passport last week. Does OzBargain think it's safe for me to book tickets for flights in late Feb?

    • -6

Might need your passport number to book

    • I am exactly the same as you.
This is the info from https://www.passports.gov.au/frequently-asked-questions-faqs…

I’m travelling soon, what can I do to get my passport quicker?
We’re processing applications based on a few criteria, including travel date.
If you’ve already given us your travel date, we’ll be processing your application according to that.
If you’re travelling in the next three days and haven’t given us your travel date, call us on 131 232.

    • +1

Singapore airlines don't ask for passport number, don't know about scoot though.

      • We just flew, I don't think you needed it at booking time. As long as you can update prior to the flight should be fine.

    • I bought return tickets, they dont ask for passport number & post office said minimum 6 weeks for passport. Fingers crossed its not 5 months lol

  • +2

Thanks BTF. Always appreciate your efforts.

  • +3

Tried searching a trip to Vietnam and all 3 flight search sites Gotogate, Wingie and Mytrip are ones that I've lost money on before. Cheaper for me to book directly than use the services of these 3

    • Out of interest how did you lose your money? Was it COVID related cancellations or something else?

  • These prices are very nice! FYI Singapore airlines is sometimes only an extra $100 or so for the same destination.

Erm showing $680 return Mel-KL Sept period. Hmmmm

  • $351 OOL-BKK - awesome - thanks!

    • That's what I thought but have a look at the layover times.. 3hr20min on the way there ain't so bad but 21hr20min is a killer. Would be better having a longer layover and spend 1-2 days in Sing on the way home

      • I'd just changed the return date and it was only 2h - not the same flight every day so good to be flexible. Awesome in any case!

        • I had a play around and the luggage option can vary from $110-170 per leg (OOL-BKK), not sure why. When did Air Asia stop flying direct from OOL-KUL? Now it seems you have to stopover in Syd or Mel on the way there. Around 2006-2011 used to be able to fly OOL-KUL-BKK and it was the cheapest way to get from Gold Coast to Thailand

          • +1

@x x: I was on the first OOL to KUL flight for $78 one way. It was flown by AirAsia X.

During the pandemic, AirAsia X went bankrupt and was restructured with a lot less planes. They will resume flights from PER, MEL and SYD.

Virgin 2.0 have announced that they will fly OOL to DPS. AirAsia Thailand is flying DPS to Thailand.

            • +1

@klrrider1: Thanks for the info. Yes that's right, it was Air Asia X doing those cheap flights back then. Hope they come back but great to hear Virgin will have direct flights to DPS from March next year. Losing Tiger Airways was a shame as they reduced competition. Their flights were often late but much cheaper than Jetstar when going to MEL

  • $153 for 20kg of checked luggage?

  • What is that website? When I want to show calendar it doesn't give me any prices unless I click on them, then if I click on one it gives me all airlines, and if I filter by Scoot, each time I check a new date it resets back to all airlines.
How do I scan all dates easily to find a cheap time to travel? The few I tried were all about $1000 one way SYD to ATH, then gave up because the clicking and refiltering to try each day drove me nuts.

  • Is there anyway to extend layovers?
I cant seem to do it on the website or multicity

  • The cheapest fare is pointing me to book via Trip.com
    Are they a legit site?

    • +1

Yes. Check the Scoot website direct as well, probably the same price anyway.

For those going to Korea they are also an official partner of Korail if you want to buy a bullet train pass.

    • +1

Yes fairly large online travel agency, publically listed in Hong Kong. Remember to use cashback

I've had to contact support via live chat and was surprised how helpful they were.

  • +1

Cheap is cheap but some of these flights are terrible lol.. some of them are 23 hours to get to Bangkok with barely a week layover.

    • You are right and I'm torn about it.
On one hand, < $400 for a return ticket is really great, but on the other hand, spending 15+ hours at an airport overnight is absolutely gruelling.

Also, no meals or entertainment provided unless you are willing to shell out $20 for instant noodles.

On the other hand, I'm looking at $1000 ish for the same trip but with a decent airline.
