I really hate the way laptops are now called NUCs.

    • +14

NUC is a intel model range

      • +7

They're referring to the fact NUC had a rather specific, longstanding meaning (literally "Next Unit of Computing", referring to small form factor PCs of a particular size). That did get diluted a bit with some upsized models, but applying it to this laptop turns it into just another meaningless brand.

        • +1

Very intuitive acronym: Reminds me of Windows Northern Territory!

        • Yes, this. No idea why I was downvoted.

    • +6

      No Use Crying about it.

    • +3

Why a laptop can't be "next unit of computing"?

      • +1

In this case, that's exactly what it is 👍

        • 5g Phones have bands with new unique names: NR, stands for new radio!!!

  • -1

    Any thoughts? Thinking about purchasing.

    • -1

Better to wait the 12th Gen unless needed urgently.

      • +3

They'll come in at a much higher price point. Generally, the best deals are always on models that are one gen behind.

        • we need to wait for it to drop in price tho… so I guess HODL ?

          • +1

@OnlineShopper123: The laptop lives up to the name Next Unit of Computing. 😁

      • Most of the reviews of laptops with 12th gen Intel processors I've been reading have said "great performance, pity about the heat and battery life" - at the moment, I'd be more inclined to stick with 11th gen or go Ryzenm particularly if you care about battery life and not baking your lap.

        • Bios updates will fix those issues. You can't improve older tech

          • @asa79: Never have I ever seen this hold up to be true. The wait game can happen when I'm dead - not buying a piece of garbage.

    • +3

Fantastic laptop for daily use. Very fast and excellent build quality.
Don’t wait for 12th gen unless you want to pay $1500 for it. 12th gen version is not a 50% better product.

      • +1

I went digging and you're right, 50% more than this deal.

        Intel NUC M15 EVO LAPRC710 15.6" 1080p Touch i7-1260P 16GB 1TB SSD WiFi 6 W11H Laptop

        • +1

That's actually a great price for the current generation

      • +4

        according to cpubenchmark.net
Intel Core i7-1165G7 Average CPU Mark : 10487
Intel Core i7-1260P Average CPU Mark : 17075

        that's more than 50% faster

        • +6

Unless all you want to do is run benchmarks, you are not going to notice much difference in day to day life. Everything runs and opens up instantly on 11th gen version for me.

        • "Nah" - Youtube and Netflix.

    • +2

I bought two a month or so ago. Materials, build quality and the screen are easily as good as laptops of similar specs that cost 3 times as much. However, I can't get rid of BSOD issue when being on Teams or Zoom meetings, every so often. Intel have been on that case diligently, and I'm absolutely certain it's the device drivers or a combination of BIOS/OS/drivers that aren't stable on W11, but the otherwise fantastic experience is let down a bit.

Laptop runs cool and silent, even when on these video calls. I'm stubbornly refusing to return the laptops, well see how that goes.

      • +4

If you disable hardware acceleration in the Zoom settings, does the issue go away ? If that fixes it, it's probably the graphics drivers.

Could also be faulty RAM - run MemTest overnight from a bootable media and make sure the error count is still 0 in the morning.

        • Intel recommended disabling HW acceleration, and I did so. Unfortunately, BSOD happened twice since with completely different error codes from those before, and also between those two failures. I would have probably find out almost amusing, if it didn't disrupt calls i was facilitating. I'm still in the "challenge accepted" mode, so good are these laptops mechanically and visually (fantastic screen). I have only ever owned top end laptops, mostly X series ThinkPads, and NUC M15 just feels better, except the keyboard.

Regarding memory and other HW tests, I've run them all first thing, and nothing came out bad. May do it over the weekend, not working on Monday, of course.

I have to say, I own two, an i5 and an i7, and they fail same way. Surely not HW. I actually think it may be that the laptop doesn't like the external screen over HDMI… I've had such a problem with a Skull Canyon NUC (also a USB-C instability on that NUC)

          • @mrau: I recently received an M15 - thought it was coming with Windows 10, but it shipped with Windows 11. I really want to downgrade back to 10 before I start using the machine.

If anyone has a guide to the best way to do this, now that W11 licences are digital, please share any links or info!

            • @enthusiast: Maybe W10 is not stable, but I find w11 nice

    • Hardware is good. Hinges loose.

  • +2

Great laptop. This model is superseded with 12th Gen chips. Hopefully launching in Australia soon.

    • Question:

When ever does the comment 'superseded with x+1 Gen chip, launching soon' stop being an accurate observation?

Or has the development cycle on these things slowed right down since I last looked.

      • +1

12th better for heat + battery life

    • +1
  • What are your guys thoughts on how this stacks up against this previous deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/719619

    • i7 is better buy if you need touchscreen.

    • +3

That model is i5, runs a bit cooler, but doesn't a touch screen. The screen, otherwise, is the same in my experience, all with the glass (just no touch). I think that i5 is better value, but at these prices, it really shouldn't matter.

      • Hey if you don't mind me asking, hows the i5 stack up against the i7 for the m15? Like is it slower, have a longer battery life, or are they basically the same?

  • Is there any pen accessory that can be used with it?

  • I suppose one has to purchase Windows OS separately ? Deal does not seem to include any OS.

    • +2

      It includes Windows 11.

      • +1

I confirm it comes with w11

        • Thank you both for the confirmation. Appreciate it

  • is ram and ssd easily upgradable??

    • +2

SSD is, ram is soldered I think.

  • Does it come with Windows 11 Pro or Home? I need Pro for Remote Desktop

    • +6

They're upgradeable - if your machine comes with Home, you can just pickup a cheap Windows Pro key from 7 or 8 or 10 or 11 from eBay etc and add that into the activation section in Settings. It'll upgrade in place, no need to reinstall.

  • No battery specs is kinda weird

    • +2

      73Wh I think I saw online somewhere.

    • Battery life is great on this laptop, easily 8-10 hours depending on usage.

  • +2

    If UHD would had considered

    Damm

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727393

    Bought this.

This NUC is better in all aspects and only $200 more.

  • This or thinkpad 15?

    • Thinkpad. Purchased this, the hinges are loose.

      • +1

Hinges aren’t loose on my unit.

  • +1

I'm so glad I held out from the last deal. I really wanted the black version. Thanks heaps OP

    • +1

I'm the opposite, and would rather the silver! Wonder if anywhere will price match for a silver version?

      • +1

There are historical deals that on the silver version for an extra $50. Whiles not on sale at the moment, the silver version is on sale a lot. You could also consider the silver one with mouse combo ~$70 extra. Whiles there is no deals at the moment, there seems to a weekly offering. Just keep checking back or you can create an alert on ozbargain to get updates (last link). Normally when there is a 22% off deal (eBay) there will be a few sellers around this price.

Also, the i5 is cheaper $950ish-$1k, but you lose the touchscreen and the states aren't as good. I believe I read these are starting to be cleared out for a new model, so there should be decent deals to come

  • Any good for someone that wants to do YouTube videos etc?
Or would he want something with a dGPU?

    • I have used it tor simple 1080p video editing on Shotcut and that ran smoothly. It’s definitely doable on this laptop but I suppose dGPU will be faster if your program of choice supports gpu acceleration.

    • It's fine for a beginner. There are big YouTubers who worked on Mac for years. If he wants to remedy his situation after getting this, he can also use cloud computing for rendering.

I've always have this saying, if you don't know whether or not you need something now, chances are, you don't need it.

  • -2

    I have one.

  • +3

Thanks OP purchased one. Been waiting for this exact spec laptop for a few months now. Daughter is heading into High School next year and doesn't game at all, so was looking for good productivity laptop to last next 6 yrs with good build quality. Also OP you should mention 2.1% CR which brings it down to 978 or so.

  • +1

Can u hackintosh this laptop? Anyone experience?

  • +1

This black model looks better than the silver one, only because it doesn't look like the macbook pro anymore

    • The black model looks like a black Macbook from 2007 or so.

Black has been typically $50 cheaper than just aluminium. I bought the silvery aluminium one, reasoning that the black will scratch, soak up heat from the sun, and it makes the keys harder to see in the dark.

  • iGPU, for those who want to play games like Valorant.

  • Can this laptop's graphic card handle 3 external monitors? Or which particular model to look for this capability? I hv a lenovo x1 yoga which wouldn't handle a 3rd monitor with software like super Display. As the laptop is now past its 4th year, perhaps time to upgrade my laptop :) would appreciate advice from anyone who knows which type of graphic cards in laptops to look for!

    • Should be able to output to 3 monitors with a suitable dock.

      • Have tried with a couple of docks including the WD22TB4 with no success. Only managed to get 2 external monitors working with the laptop. Which made me think it must be the laptop.

  • +1

    Oh~ NUC M15 12gen released!
There is no review on youtube yet.
HODL and stack ebay GC till ebay sale on new gen!

  • +2

i got the silver one for 1037 delivered from the ebay deal last week, i used it once, while i was setting it up the fan kept kicking in loudly. it was kinda annoying, at that point i was thinking did i make a mistake of not going for a macbook air m1 for $1300 from edu store

    • +1

Make sure the Battery mode is set to Balanced. If is it set to Performance then the fan kicks in very quickly.

  • Got one, thanks OP!

  • Can this be compared with Apple MacBook Air M1 13" ($1499)??

Thinking about getting this for my son's school use next year? Would it be too heavy as the spec says 1.65kg?

    • +1

Yes - for 50% more $s you get 27% less screen & non-touch with MacBook Air M1. The weight is reasonable but you can find better ones.

  • Thanks op, managed to place my order and collect just before my local Bing Lee closed! Very happy with it so far, although it has some compatibility issues with Linux (cant seem to get my webcam working on Fedora 36)

  • +1

isn't the below Lenovo is better than this?
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkbook/thinkbook-s…

    • +4

300 nits for lenovo vs 450 nits for this one and 2.3 inches bigger with touch screen - and who doesn't like more inches, especially when they can touch it? All other specs look the same.

  • +2

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727891

Isn't this Better for the extra money? Better CPU, better onboard graphics, better screen, better ram etc

I guess it falls in line, $300+ less and basically less performance everywhere.

  • Looking to replace my Lenovo X1 Carbon 2015 - i7 5th gen laptop. Would this be a bargain or does anyone have better reccs? Also this over the 12th gen?

  • Does this charge via USB C?
What other ports are available, specs are lacking

    • +1

Yes, it has two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports that it can charge by. Additionally, it has 2x USB A ports, 1x HDMI port and 1x Headphone jack.

  • +3

    To those purchasing, buyer beware.

Mine had very loose hinges and I reckon I need to pop mine open to adjust the hinge tension.

Should have gone with a Lenovo ThinkPad because the hinges are more robust. Either that or an hp or Dell.

It does require a 100W charger though, so fair warning. My other Lenovo's don't have the same power requirement, only about a 35-60w req.

    • +1

I think this works with a 65w charger actually (if you scroll down to power requirements):
      https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/systems/laptops/intel-laptops…

The hinges on mine are completely fine, but it's good to hear about everyone's experiences.

My only issue is a some minor coil whine as the fans kick in every now and again.

  • -1

Intel 11th Gen CPU's were better off being left as sand on a beach somewhere…..

  • Can anyone recommend a good value thunderbolt dock for this laptop?

I just need 2x display ports (preferred DP, but it's cheap enough to change to HDMI cables) and some USB-C (at least x 2) and some USB-A ports.

There is way too much choice online and I just don't know what is good or not (I have only had dell docks with prior systems)

    TIA

    • +1

The cheapest Thunderbolt 4 dock/hub I can find is ALOGIC Thunderbolt 4 BLAZE Hub $229 at the moment, 3x TB4 ports + 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 Port, so you need USB-C to DP cables for DP port output.

If you just need 2x DisplayPort, assuming full bandwidth, i.e. capable of 4k@60Hz on each port, + 2x USB-C and USB-A ports. Why not considering USB4 hub.

      I'd suggest J4create USB4 Dual 4K Mult-Port Hub. It's has 1x DP 1.4, 1x HDMI, 1x USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode + 1x USB-C PD, 1x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps). The price is ~$180.

Don't buy those USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) hubs that flooded the market, they only capable of output either 1x 4k@60Hz or 2x 4k@30Hz due to the USB 3 bandwidth limitation.
