  • Do they give you any cashback?

  • Are the M2 updates meant to be at the next event?

    • +3

I heard from the rumour mill they were cancelled. But they may not be.

      • If there's no M2 Pro/Max chipsets, grab this deal.
      • If there is, and we get the SAME upgrade on the M2 Pro and M2 Max, like we saw with the M2 versus M1. Well the decision is easy. There's not much improvement, so just go with the M1 Pro/Max if you can do so at 10%-15% cheaper.
      • But if Apple decides to improve the M2 Pro/Max products by increasing iGPU, increasing base storage (1TB), and/or base memory (32GB)… well it might actually be worth it to wait and get those "free" upgrades.

…I'm currently in the market for one, should have bought it early when released. Looking for the 14in model and wanted the M1X chipset (for the long-term keep), but Apple doesn't sell that in Australia. Also they're so expensive, I guess the M1P is good enough. Argh, we don't know if the M2 P/X are coming and if so they might be disappointing.

      • +5

edit: I decided to skip it.

I'll wait for the Apple Conference to come and see if M2P and M2X are announced. Then I might be lucky to still get the M1P or M1X on discount. Otherwise, could find something on the Used Market. And worse comes to worse, it might even make sense to go travelling and pick one up overseas for cheaper (Apple International Warranty). Also it might be worth waiting for the announcement of a new "Mac Pro" as we can learn if it has support for other features like Bootcamp and Pcie, as Apple may have to add AMD GPU driver support into macOS. That means eGPU solutions can potentially be viable again on the MacBooks, to dualboot them with ARM-builds of Windows10 or Windows11 OS.

According to the popular MacRumours Blog you should skip buying the M1P/M1X for now.

          Yes. What he said 👆

          😁😁

        • +6

But you need to factor in the Aussie $ is down the toilet and these new ones will probably be a 10-15% more in price than the current RRP, which means this deal would be about 20-25% less cheaper than M2..is 10-15% performance worth 20-25%more in cost ?

I’m just speculating on price but the Aussie $ is down a lot..

          • +1

@whoistheg: Not to mention inflation has been significant over the last few years, regardless of currency conversions.

I agree, seems likely rrp will inflate a bit. We already saw it with the M2 air

          • -1

@whoistheg: Aussie $ is bad now. Not worth going to America anymore.

        • +1

You have more rights under Australian Consumer Law than Apple's 1 year warranty.

          • @b3au: True, but what's the chances that "Apple Australia" will treat you differently than someone who's bought their MacBook Pro from JB Hifi ?

            • @Kangal: JB HiFi Australia, or JB HiFi other country? ;-)

IMO not worth saving a dollar and losing years of hardware coverage trying to buy overseas.

  • +5

HODL, new macbooks coming out this month!

      • What about the M2 Pro/Max is worse than the M1 Pro/Max?

        • đŸ”„

        • -2

M2 Pro/Max will possibly be a step backwards on the power efficiency. Sure, you get those performances, but battery life is gonna tank.

      • M2 is worse only in MacBook Air because of thermal throttling.

    • +2

With the worsening AUD, don't be surprised if the new models are 10% more expensive than they are now. Which means about 25% more than these prices here.

If only 32GB RAM wasn't a custom option I'd probably jump at these.

      • Hey, but look at iPhones. if you compare with last year, no much difference despite a weaker AUD

        • iPhones bring in other revenue streams, so they are probably more willing to trim the fat on those margins.

MacBooks really only generate revenue from hardware sales - there's no incentive to loss lead.

        • Thing is, it doesn't matter where the dollar actually is - Apple price it on where they think it will be over the course of the product cycle. Apple set the current prices when the dollar was fetching closer to $0.75… it's now at $0.63. I don't see them pricing any new models at that same rate unless a dramatic reversal happens before they launch.

        • +1

The AUD will definitely not be 83c by year end. That's not how currency works and if US interest rates continue to go up faster than AUS, the exchange rate will most likely be worse.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Sure. If the USD was only temporarily strong due to a flight to safety i.e. stock crash and money being parked in currency - then you might be right, as the 'crisis' ended, it should reverse.

However, in this instance inflation is much higher in the US and harder to tame than in Aus - so the Fed will have to increase their rates, faster than the RBA ours. That naturally draws more cash towards the USD over the AUD due to the increased yield difference. Also the AUD is heavily linked to commodity demand, and our biggest customer China, has an anaemic economy for however long due to their COVID approach.

An example of a reason why this is the case, is that every Aussie mortgage holder only has a short term fixed rate loan (2/3 years) vs the US where mortgagees can have fixed rates for the life of the loan. So an Aussie is far more sensitive to a rate rise and will stop spending, where as the American citizen can keep spending until they lose their job.

Business lending is a different story.

New ones are not far away.

    • ‘Make apple bleed’ this sounded so serious in my head lol, this is war!

      Make apple bleed

This doesn’t even make sense. HODL and purchase after the event?

If you’re buying a older model on clearance, you’re helping to clear stock on a old product where R&D is recovered.

If you’re buying a new product, you’re validating company decisions to shareholders.

Wow, half your post history is “HODL” or “I reckon this is worth fiddy bucks.”

      • +6

Give the guy a break. He's only got 640k and couldn't vote in the RAM thread.

        • +6

640k somehow seems like overkill for what he is doing

      • +1

This is the guy who will also "HODL" through the new gen of tech as well once they're released.

      • He means to hodl on your current device and not to buy a new Mac if you already own one.

        • +1

What do you think he expects you to do after new ones are announced?

  • Which colour looks better, Space Grey or Silver? I'm leaning towards silver.

    • +4

      Space grey for me anyday.

    • +3

IMO Space Grey was nice when it first appeared and broke the pattern of Silver MacBooks you’d see everywhere, but it has flipped now and the overwhelming majority of devices seem to be Space Grey now.

I like Space Grey better, but Silver actually looks more unique these days so my next purchase will more than likely be Silver.

    • Put a hardshell or skin on it for protection and it won’t matter what colour you get! :-D

    • +1

I’ve had many of both. Silver is the base metal colour, and if it gets scratched the underlying colour is the same and doesn’t stand out.

Space Grey, and all of the other colours (I assume), are an anodised coating over the top of the silver base silver. Any scratches will show the silver below. I’m incredibly careful with my devices, but even so I’ve found this coating to be less than resilient, showing wearing around the edges and wrist areas.

To clarify, my post is mostly about resale value rather than what looks cool (Space Grey).

Same price as JB which is offering 10% off retail. Also, OW is actually a couple bucks cheaper with some models.

    • +5

How is JB the same price? Their 14'' is $2700 on JB website

  • +17

…wtf is with the comments in this post?

    • +4

Not sure if this helps, but "Hodl" is a term from the cryptocurrency community - a misspelling of hold. It was originally a signal of solidarity - showing that you weren't going to sell your crypto, which I think it was feared could cause the price to tank. It's being used here by people waiting for a better price to buy, as new Macbooks are expected to be announced soon.

      • +1

Huh. It had to be some cryptocurrency BS that idiots love to jump onto.

      • Yeah I know where it comes from and all that, I just find it weird that people think an Apple product is going to drop to a bargain bin price when the new version comes out. That never happens. They just pull them out of supply.

  • if there is a refresh, price will be pegged to USD. so we are looking at a good 15-20% hike on the RRP in Australia.

    • the new iPhone 14’s just came out and we’re exactly same price as last year. So.. maybe there’s hope for no price hike

  • In the market for a new MacBook Air/Pro, but I also need Windows. Is Apple working on something to make Bootcamp works on M1/2?

    • Parallels with Windows works really well on the M1s, bar some apps, check the youtube reviews.

      • Thanks kaotickelly.

    • +1

No bootcamp for Apple Silicon so cannot just carry an portable SSD with Windows + Macbook Pro. Used to do that pre-Covid-19 when travelling.

  • Bought 5

    • Surround laptop System?

      • One for each weekday (or was good at making babies).

  • The Air is the best bang for buck

  • I have always been a Windows and Linux Fan. So moving to the Apple mac m1 pro was an excellent choice. I love it—the bright screen. The battery lasts forever. The speakers are fantastic.
I got a windows laptop for work. I run the same DevOps applications on Mac. No problems at all.

  • -3

Those Pro are so thick and heavy compared to old ones. What happened to Apple? They don't want it to compete with Air and thus went conservative with Pro regarding size and didn't sacrifice cooling and battery?

    • yeah they do seem heavy af. I had a play in store and the Air def seems better but apple just doesn't give the Air's the spec I need

  • should have just grabbed this. Looks like apple aren't releasing a new MBP this year
