Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix Subscriptions

Resharing after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix, except this guide may provide better guidance on sign ups. I've spent quite some time doing some testing and then making this post, so please share some love and let me know of any errors :)

Turkey is currently the cheapest place for a Netflix Standard and Premium subscription (for Basic plans, India is slightly cheaper by less than 10 cents), even after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 in a span of a year

(Well actually, Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans by several cents, according to this site and this full list of Netflix pricing around the world by CC123 and Giu, however, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe)

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back)

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Possible Solution to Problem by toxicpuffle: For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase. Reportedy didn't work - proceed with caution

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails - EASIEST METHOD)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Again, the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here

Does the Gift Card method have to be done after AU Sub has ended or not?

    • +2

Well, you need to have no current subscriptions to resubscribe soo.. yes

  • Getting an issue with trying to use my Amex where it tells me "something went wrong" but also with STG visa and CBA mastercard. Does this just mean that those cards can't be used?

  • +1

I made the switch from AU to TR earlier this year. I had an issue with my payment info due to commbank debit card expiring and Netflix requiring a Turkish mobile number, so I used the chat/support to update the payment and bypass the mobile number issue.

After seeing your comment I brought up live chat and told them I can't update my payment details. At first I thought I was SOL because I was being told about text verification, but then she went on to ask me a few questions and sent the private form.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12127174/redir

I'm paying $8.22 + an extra 25c international transaction fee for Premium. As long as it's under $10, I won't complain.

    • Go with ING. No international transaction fees

  • At the 'Set up your credit or debit card' under Part 3 …I keep getting 'Sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again later.' any advice please.

    • This is exactly what I am getting. I've tried 3 different cards but each time get the same error.

  • I bought a giftcard through G2A, went to redeem and got "Looks like this account is not eligible for gift codes. Please try a different email address." :(

    • That’s interesting. Is it an old account or a new account?

Did you follow the steps correctly?

      • Old account, possibly because the account tied up with iTune ? Or could it be G2A issue ? Or that my account hasn’t fully expired yet lol

I cancelled membership and went straight to step 3.

        • Did you do Part 1a or 1b?
Can you still access Netflix and watch stuff or you no longer have access?

    • Did you turn your vpn on?

  • It appears my Turgame gift card isn't working. "The code entered is not valid"

    • I have the same issue when I try to apply the key on the redeem page.

    • +1

Gift cards will not work with an active Netflix account. Happened to me as well when I bought the gift card from mtcgame and thought the gift card was a dud.

      • +1

That answers my reply just below lol. Will try it tomorrow

      • Does that deem that card void then? Or will the key still work after the active sub expires?

        • +1

The code will still work, as it hasn’t been redeemed

        • Key will still work as it has not been redeemed yet

    • I'm having the same issue! Bought the code from G2a and it says on the Netflix redeem site "The code entered is not valid" (VPN is on and I'm logged into my account) I've cancelled my membership on the Netflix account settings - however, I did not contact live chat to cancel my membership since my billing period is tomorrow. Maybe it is because I still have access to Netflix, and it is not expired?

      • +2

That’s exactly why LMAO. Try again tomorrow when you can no longer access

        • +2

impatience gets the best of us, even ozbargainers.

      • Once you have cancelled the membership the account will still remain active until the next billing period. No need to contact live chat with regard to the matter as long as you have already cancelled the account. Netflix will send you an email either a day or a few hours prior to account cancellation reminding you about the upcoming termination.

        • If you do Part 1b, I recommend contacting live chat to get a full refund and an account cancellation effective immediately so you can hop on to Turkey instantly. No point spending 1 month in AU prices

  • +1

UK guide reports that gift cards region lock your account so you need VPN for first month, https://www.hotukdeals.com/discussions/the-all-new-definitiv….

    • +2

so you need VPN for first month

I’ve never heard of anyone having to use VPN to watch, even myself

      • Neither had I until I read the UK guide. Just letting people know if it happens to them that it's a temporary measure and not to panic. I've used a CC to happily sub to Turkey for 3 years so neither here nor there to me. I hardly watch Netflix nowadays and spend more time on overseas sports services, which is definitely a forte of the UK mob.

  • +3

I can vouch for Turgame having purchased over $100 AUD in 100 TL and 200 TL Netflix gift cards in the past. Buy direct from their website, as other sites will probably just get their keys from Turgame anyway and make a commission. In my case for security and peace of mind I used a virtual credit card from my Zip Pay account.

  • +1

Have been using Netflix Turkey for months now, used the gift card method with an expired Aus account and has been great ever since.

  • +1

Any lawyers here? Is this form of bargain (be netflix, google one or YT premium) illegal in any way? Other than a breach of T's and C's

    • From what I see the only felonious act is pretending to be from somewhere you are not. But that's no different from someone who was originally from a different country which migrated to another country while kepping their existing subs.

      • Or you could have family in Turkey, or family members who were in Turkey but not anymore.
We've got OzB family in Turkey, right?

        • +3

I do, I also have family members in India and Argentina

Ozbargain is an inclusive and multicultural community. Coincidently all members live in either Istanbul, Izmir, or Ankara. Amazing!

      • Buenos Aires my friend

        • Yes, I did see that on Youtube recently. Might have to look at taking out residence there soon

          • @Snoots: Sorry, I might have to rescind my Youtube residence from there

            • @OzBerghainer: Yep, I just moved in with my mate Jim Browning. Handling all the new Medibank and Optus customers.

  • Not sure what I am doing wrong but I keep getting the "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later." error message.

100TL Gift code is successfully applied and I still have another tab with Netflix Australia account page (restart membership) open. I am connected to Istanbul via NordVPN. However once I put in my backup payment method I get the error….

Created a new netflix account and then immediately used the chat function to cancel and refund which worked perfectly. Followed all the steps in part 3 - purchased gift card from G2A. Signed in AU account. Then NordVPN turkey to redeem - signed up for premium - back up NAB credit card didn't work and gave error so switched to a overseas credit card that I have and all works fine. Thanks! Now to try the Disney+ method :)

  • Error occurred during gift redemption…

  • +1

    Thanks OP for the guide

  • managed to get a gift card to work, but netflix wont accept my NAB card as a backup, anyone else with NAB having the same issue? 'There appears to be a problem with the payment method you are trying to use.'

    • yep got the same error with my NAB credit card so have used a non-nab card

      • Seems like NAB cards are getting declined for some reason (based on comments). So weird

        • Hi OP, if my current Netflix account already has a mobile number and a credit card saved, when I reactivate using the Turkish gift card and VPN, will I still need to add a new backup credit card?

    • Since you already have an active sub using a gift card you can try and contact support to have them add your payment method. Have read from old post that someone was able to get support add their payment details.

  • Took me all of 30 minutes from start (new account) to finish. Thanks immensely, OP!

  • I’m willing to pay someone $50 if someone can setup YouTube & Netflix on my account.
Every time I try i can never get it to work!

  • which credit cards are people having success with?

  • Got the Netflix gift cards from Turgames, signed up to PureVPN and connected to Istanbul Turkey however cannot redeem through Netflix Turkey.
    Keeps thinking I'm in Japan.

    1. Had an account via Argentina, which expired last year
    2. Reactivate it directly on AU, update CC (28Deg) & mobile
    3. Over the chat asked to cancel, & full refund the amount charged
    4. GC via Turgame ,, took only few mins GC to arive
    5. Then step 3 exactly as above, applied via GC in another tab with VPN on, complete saving CC & other details
    6. All done, VPN disconnected, working via direct AU access.
    7. Confirmed Payment details , seems Premium TL₺93.99
    7. Typing this while on my 1st film since reactivation :)
Working as of 9.30pm 22/10/2022 Thanks OP

    Make new Gmail for netflix.
Signed up to netflix basic using 28degree mastercard.
    Verify phone number with netflix
    Live chat for refund

Purchased 100TL from Turgame (1hr for code by email)
Download NORD VPN installed n sign in. (Not active yet)

Go netflix.com sign in using account created before
    Close browser completely
NORD VPN connect to isantbul turkey vpn
Open fresh browser again go to netflix.com/redeem (dnt need to login anymore, as its already logged in)
Type Turgame netflix code in and netflix says “welcome back” reactivate
Select premium plan, choose previous 28degree mastercard already in account.

Follow few simple questions onscreen and reactivated using turkey payment.

    Done!!!!

    Reactivated and working.

    • for people saying code dont work, make sure u close browser completely (do not log out of netflix) and reopen then just go direct to netflix.com/redeem it shows url TR ontop means turkey site. Do not leave another tab that shows u login to aus website.

Tried PureVPN, couldn't get it to work.
    Nord VPN worked.

Now just need to see how to get 4K working as I purchased the Premium tier Netflix.

Still subject to the anti sharing initiative with 🦃?

    • Exactly what I was thinking. I successfully signed up Netflix Turkey last time. But after about 2 days, Netflix cracked down on sharing and no one could watch. Had 1 person watching in India, 1 in QLD and 1 in VIC.

Changed back to Australia and it works fine now.

      Any tips ?

  • +1

toxicpuffle's suggested workaround didn't work for me, got to the mobile verification page for turkey, turned off VPN and refreshed and it accepted my card but with AU plan. No warning or opportunity to turn the VPN back on. Must be fixed.

    • Live chat for a full refund (make up some excuse)

I've updated OP regarding this, sorry

      • +1

It's all good. I will try again next month! My family can't live without Netflix. I was actually paying full US price for years as I signed up in 2014 via VPN, which worked out to be AU$32/month for the past few months so $22/mth is still better than what I was paying.

Thank you for writing a such a comprehensive guide by the way. I will upvote!

        • Thank you for writing a such a comprehensive guide by the way. I will upvote!

No worries and Thank you :)

I will try again next month!

No serious, it will take you only a few minutes, they refund with no questions asked. And then after, go through the gift card method :) You only need to apply the gift card once and then every month it charges your debit card

  • I got this working. It was a bit finicky but I needed a Turkish number so I had to redeem with a gift card. My backup method has my Commonwealth card linked to it however I don't think it'll work for future payments because that's what I tried initially when trying with a credit card payment.

I can't even use my revolut card too so I guess I'll just have to buy gift cards monthly.

    • If your backup card is selected and locked in the account, it will work, and each month it will deduct from that card unless you have no funds in there or something

      • I hope so! Will find out in 2 months (bought two gift cards).

  • Ok, I have a subscription which I have now cancelled, and it ends on Nov 9th.
I already have my mastrercard as the preferred payment method.

Correct me if I am wrong, on Nov 10th I log into my account with the VPN off.
Once in my account I turn on the VPN using Istanbul in Turkey.
I then go to select my plan, where I'm confused is the part that mentions “Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method”

I already have a card set as my preferred, so what do I do here?

    • "I then go to select my plan, where I'm confused is the part that mentions “Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method”"

You have to use the Netflix Turkey giftcard as the "first" payment to start the account under the Turkish pricing plan. (Then it "may" utilise your existing CC on the following month/billing cycle to continue at the lower price). -> At least that's my understanding as I have to do this too in the next few weeks

    • If it’s already on the account as preferred backup method, then no need to add a new one. Just select it

But please go through the gift card method to avoid any troubles

  • +1

Thanks OP! Time to save during this inflation!

My question is about the Netflix content.

When switching over the Turkish Netflix, I am assuming the Home Screen may display some Turkish content when watching in Australia. Will we lose any content in comparison to Australian Netflix?

For example - a movie maybe available in Australian Netflix but may not appear when watching Netflix in Australia while signed into Turkish Netflix account?

Or is this question invalid as regardless of what Netflix account I have (any country), the content shown is from the location where I have signed in from? In this case - Australia?

Using NordVPN (tried Windows client and browser extension). Even though I'd previously been a customer and they had my card details on file, it asked for a backup payment option. CBA card would not work, Westpac card worked but then prompted for Turkish mobile OTP. I had exhausted my card options at this point.

I completely closed / reopened Chrome, connected to Turkey via NordVPN chrome extension, went to Netflix.com (already logged in), clicked Restart Membership and voila! It had my CBA card details saved and I was able to start the membership.

    • +1

at least it worked out :)

      • +1

Yep, hoping my story helps someone else.

    • I'm having the same issue, tried with multiple Aussie cards, even tried closing and reopening but no luck. Each time I get an error.

      • If this happens, most likely you didn’t do Part 1 properly

If you’ve tried all methods and given up, just proceed to subscribe using gift cards alone and not add a backup payment method.

After, you can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account).

If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one

Let me know how you go

        • Yea I subscribed using the gift cards and then was able to add the card details via the chat. I think all good now.

          Thanks.

  • Hi All, could i purchase netflix EUR giftcard and redeem on the Nextflix turkey?
i always struggle to get these kind of hacks going :)
thanks and keep up with the sharing.

    • No, just purchase the turkish lira gift card, as that’s the currency used for Netflix Turkey

  • I've been using this method since 2018 but recently my membership lapsed as I forgot to top with gift cards. I hadn't logged in for a couple of months and when I tried to reactivate the account using the standard method of vpn + g2a gift card it gives me a 'code invalid' error. Now I don't know if is actually a bad code or if it's related to the account being old.
