Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix Subscriptions

Resharing after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix, except this guide may provide better guidance on sign ups. I've spent quite some time doing some testing and then making this post, so please share some love and let me know of any errors :)

Turkey is currently the cheapest place for a Netflix Standard and Premium subscription (for Basic plans, India is slightly cheaper by less than 10 cents), even after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 in a span of a year

(Well actually, Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans by several cents, according to this site and this full list of Netflix pricing around the world by CC123 and Giu, however, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe)

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back)

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Possible Solution to Problem by toxicpuffle: For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase. Reportedy didn't work - proceed with caution

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails - EASIEST METHOD)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Again, the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here

  • Seem too many issue not like youtube premium or Disney + that easy, I will pass.

    • Netflix is extremely easy imo, just go through Part 1 and 3 and it will take only a few mins of your time

      • Thanks, let me have a look, will it works with my current Aussie subscription? I still have some Netflix gift card credit.

        • You will need to buy a Turkish Netflix Gift Card. Aus GCs will not work with a Turkey Netflix sub

If you have Aus GC’s, best to either use it all up under an Aus subscription (Aus prices) or sell the credit to someone else.

Then come back to this thread :)

          • @I Smell Pennies:

Then come back to this thread :)

Thanks, credit still in the account until Dec, I can use the same Netflix a/c to do that after I finished my gift card?

            • +1

@superforever: Yes :) While you’re at it, do Part 1 now and confirm your mobile number in your account (but no need to cancel sub as you’re using up your credits as you said)

  • What VPN can we use to change netflix library? Nord vpn doesnt work for me. I try to switch to US netflix and I get a message saying my vpn was detected. Are they just cracking down on them then? Or am I the only one facing this problem?

    • Happens all the time. Give it a day or two and nord will update their ips

  • I started the turkey subscription with a gift card but skipped the backup credit card as it was not letting me use any Aussie CC.

What's the options now? Possible to add a credit card now or can I buy more gift cards from Turkey and load them onto my account?

    • +2

If this happens, most likely you didn’t do Part 1 properly

If you’ve tried all methods and given up, just proceed to subscribe using gift cards alone and not add a backup payment method.

After, you can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account).

If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one

Let me know how you go

      • Shall I contact the agent while VPN is on or off?

  • +1

Thank you so much for this.

  • Hi do I need VPN to buy the gift card

  • +1

AU sub finally ended. Was able to redeem Turgame GC no worries.

  • +1

It's been 5 hours since I ordered the giftcard from Turgames, should I be worried?

    • It's about 08:35 there so maybe need to wait for someone to wake up and process the requests?

  • I already have this, but need to change credit card soon. What's the easiest way to change card? Can it be done in account settings or does it have to be done via chat? I'd try but I don't want to interrupt my subscription until I have the new card.

    • Chat easiet

    • +1

you can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account).

If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one

  • anyone had success with Cyber Ghost VPN? I set to turkey (istanbul) and it still shows me plan costs in AUD

  • +2

Thank you - I was about to cancel my account. What a great guide!
Used my 28Degrees card for future payments.

I suppose another way would be to purchase 12 months worth of gift vouchers and claim it at the discounted rate?

  • Can you end subscription early and try these methods out or have to wait until expire?

  • I have received a new credit card, my old was is cancelled, when i tried to update, it asks for a Turkish phone number…

    Anyway I can bypass this?

I did use a g2a turkish voucher, it worked, but this is annoying

    • +1

      in the OP:

Possible Problem 3: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, again - it's a VPN problem. Double check or change your VPN if needed and go back to step 4

If you went through the GC method and it’s asking for a Turkey mobile number, it’s the VPN. From my testing, that’s what happened

      • OP, I also had the same problem when trying to add new payment details. At the end I had to use the Chat support and the rep just sent me a registration form to add my new credit card details.
So, my suggestion is that you add another step in Part 1 which is to add the new credit card detail before you unsubscribed. This will save the hassle later after you subscribe to Turkey Netflix.

PIA vpn - windows app works, browser addon dont seem to have turkey

  • Can anyone please confirm if I can use PayPal as the payment method for Netflix Turkey? And does it have to be Istambul or the VPN servers in any other city in Turkey would also work?

  • FYI - Family & Friends overseas are unable to access content 😤😥

    • +1

What! no! Would you explain a bit more? did you gave them the new password, when you cancel subscription they make you change password and log out all devices. I got family on the opposite side of the time line just about to wake up and to watch something..: dont want a nasty suprise 😂 anyway i have to delete the app on the samsung TV and reinstalled it for it to work coz the damn thing keep trying to login with old password

      • I am still using old details, and family overseas can not access 😔 content, fingers crossed you don't have to face the same

          • @huu: Thank you for the suggestion

    • Which country? I haven't tried too many different IP addresses but I know Malaysia cannot watch Netflix accounts that have a Turkish subscription

      • Turkey Netflix don't work in Bangladesh, VPN helps but does not show indian contents 😔

      • Turkish account does not appear to work in India.

  • Hey it doesn't seem to work for me, well;

Okay so I followed all the steps and brought a giftcard from g2a.
    - I turned off vpn, logged on
    - Turned on VPN gone onto giftcard reedem.
    - Then when I enter it and try to “Redeem” it.
It comes up with "The code entered is not valid.

    note:
Using nord vpn and it's based in Istanbul.
Only variance is that I still have 3 days till current my subscription ends.

    • +1

Only variance is that I still have 3 days till current my subscription ends.

Try again after 3 days, when your sub ends, then post back here

      • +1

Ah thanks, I'll try again then.

        • +1

I had same issue, if your membership has ended and you still have the issue, see my latest comment at the end of the thread, that worked for me.

  • Hey OP,

If I am able to provide a Turkish mobile number for the code would this work if I use free VPN and have commbank credit card details already without the gift card method?

    • Try it and let us know :)
If it works it works, if it declines it declines. I don't know everything and I'm not here to test everyone's method. You're experience will be valuable to us

      • Will do man!

  • Couldn't for the life of me to get a card (tried 5 different ones) to work for Step 3 last night. Follow-up the instructions to a tee.

So then I actually tried just signing up legitimately (in AUD and without VPN) and still none of the cards would work. No idea whats going on. 4 seperate chat agents were not helpful. None of them knew what I was talking about a payment details popup.

Any suggestions? Can same mobile be used to make a new account?

    • Are you using bank card or prepaid master/visa card?

      • I’ve tried prepaid car, credit card and debit card. All the same result.

        • What was the error? Or try different browser like Chrome, Firefox or so on?

  • is it just me or i can't find where i can sign up for a year. like pay 1 year in advance rather than deducting per month

  • I'm in Turkey right now, should I sign up a new account here and use giftcards?

  • +1

    Thanks OP

  • Hi OP.

Can I still do this if I my billing is still through Apple?

    • +1

Mate the OP isn't here to test everything for people. Try yourself and then post to let others know.

    • You will have to cancel your current subscription through Apple, then wait until your current subscription to expire and then hop onto this deal using the above instructions

      • Downside is once you cancel Apple billing for Netflix, there ain't anyway to go back to it. So you can't get your 10% GC hack back, so hoping this Turkey thing works…

  • +7

So I had the same issue as a few people here did with redeeming a gift card from G2A via the /redeem link, and I have a solution that worked for me.

    Assuming your membership is lapsed, and you are on www.netflix.com/redeem and it's not accepting the gift code;
    1. Go to www.netflix.com
    2. 'Restart membership'
    3. Go to the page that shows your Credit Card as payment, and click 'Edit'
    4. Press 'Back' or 'Back to payment options' or something like that (I can't remember exactly what it said now, if you're on there please comment so this can be used by others)
    5. Select 'Netflix Gift Card' from the payment options
    6. Enter the number, and it works here

    • +8

I love people like you, never giving up and mucking around to find a solution and sharing your experience. This will be valuable for everyone!

    • I swear I'm not dumb ahaha, do I need VPN to be on when I do this?
Well regardless I've tried on and off, both methods, yet it does not seem to work and always says “The code entered is not valid”.
Fyi I have two codes from G2A and both say the same thing.

      • +1

You should have VPN on for Turkey, i had my Nord set to Istanbul.

        • +3

Okay nvm I take that back, I am dumb hehe.
Nah yea everything was fine, like set to Istanbul, gift card, etc.

So some reason Netflix gave me 4 extended days to renew my membership so no matter what I do it wouldn't work.
Only today when it completely expired, it worked when I logged into Netflix to “renew”.

However, thanks for your & @i smell pennies help,
I did it your way, and it worked perfectly :)

          • @LilWhat: @LilWhat I am using a working VPN server (VPN Unlimited) in Turkey which takes me to Netflix Turkey redeem page. I am trying to use a 100TL gift card code I purchased from Turgame. It keeps coming back with an error message. Turgame customer service wants me to set up a new Netflix Turkey account with VPN on for the code to work. I prefer to keep my current Netflix AU account which became inactive yesterday. How did you find out that Netflix AU gave you four extended days to renew your membership? I am just wondering if I should wait for a few days and try again or just give up. @BuyingStuffIDontNeed, I tried your method, but it didn't work for me. Any other recommendations? @I Smell Pennies, any suggestions?

            • @coolndeep: If you tried it same as I mentioned, and it didn't work, the only differences I can see between what you've done and I, are:

              • I used a gift card from G2A. I actually bought Turgame first but it took ages to come through, and I was impatient so bought G2A, and later once I had active account via Turkey I also redeemed the Turgame one. If you're willing to try for another ~$7-9 you could try a G2A gift card too?
              • I used NordVPN not VPN Unlimited. You could try NordVPN, they have a 30 day money back guarantee too so could use and cancel afterwards and might not cost you anything

Hope it works out for you

            • @coolndeep: Did you retry again reading the instructions carefully? I remember getting an error once but managed to bypass it.

If you muck around with it I'm sure you'll be able to do it. If any problems please pm me directly as I might lose this comment

          • +1

            @LilWhat: Thanks and enjoy :)

  • Thanks for sharing, I don't own a Credit card and would refer not to use gift cards.
Does anyone know if its possible to link a digital card like Revolut or Wise as the payment method?

    • +1

Works with wise, I'm using a digital wise card.

  • +1

hi all, i tried using pureVPN (signed up for 2+ years @ $53 but fully intending to cancel my subscription) but it keeps redirecting me to japan netflix. very annoying. so i thought i should try another VPN (went with Nord) but that is also asking me to create an account with NordVPN for a monthly fee! in the OP it mentioned free VPN's, but it looks like they are all paid services…..or am i missing something? also, assuming i am able to get Nord to work, i am guessing i would need to perform the same procedure (i.e. buy turkish GC, then redeem it via Turkey netflix) every month? or are people buying a batch of gift cards and pre loading them somehow? cheers all and thanks in advance for any help

    • Try HolaVPN extension on chrome. It was free for me, however I already have nord so I did it with nord.

  • I've just managed to do this using giftcard from G2a and surfshark VPN ! Thank you ! first youtube premium and now this is great value! Does anyone know if I will need to keep getting turkish gift cards or will it charge my card linked to the account from now on ?

  • +1

Used Windscribe VPN extension on Microsoft Edge and followed the steps from OP

    Worked perfectly!

thanks for sharing and saving me some moolah :)

  • Had no luck using any of my 3 Australian credit cards as the payment method, just doesn’t go through. Have had to resort to a swag of GCs every few months to top up. Bit annoying but worth it for the spavings.

  • Currently Stuck!!! Already on Netflix Turkey, but trying to update my old CC details via chat and they ask for what country I am located in and where the account was created.

    • +1

Let it lapse. You will get a few emails requesting new CC details, just ignore them.
Netflix will continue to work on your devices until it doesn't, at which point it will advise that your account is suspended and prompt you for new CC details. You can enter the details on your device (in my case, an android TV) without any need for a VPN. Should work just fine.

      • Thank you! I'll wait it out and see how it goes. Cheers

  • Thanks for the help,
Also, if I were to change my credit card info eg, after a month or two, would that make it go to AUD price or default to turkey price.

    • +1

same turkey price although you may have to live chat and ask for a payment update form

      • Oh okay, just asking in case I have to change it.

  • +2

Followed all steps to a successful subscription. Was on AU standard before, but now on premium for cheap. Used Windscribe VPN extension on Edge, with Amex. Thanks for this OP!

  • Damn it, I was using this for a couple of years but revolut switched cards! And now I cannot update the card trying with pop up and so many cards but no luck :(

    • I'm having the same problem! The old Revolut card worked just fine, I tried to add the new Revolut card with a webform but it keeps getting rejected. According the Netflix Chat the card you add must be issued in Turkey to be able to add it as a payment method :(

      • Very annoying, might have to just do via gift cards :(

  • Am I able to have a PayPal account connected or should I switch it to a credit/debit card?

    • best to have debit/credit card rather than paypal

  • +1

Mine initially didn't work using my internet connection at home. I switched to my phone data and Chrome with nordvpn plugin. And it worked!

    Thank you!

  • Anyone get a Netflix giftcard from turgame that was invalid?

    • That's happened to me. I bought the giftcard from G2A but it's from Turgame and when i enter it in, it says 'The code entered is not valid'.
