Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix Subscriptions

Resharing after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix, except this guide may provide better guidance on sign ups. I've spent quite some time doing some testing and then making this post, so please share some love and let me know of any errors :)

Turkey is currently the cheapest place for a Netflix Standard and Premium subscription (for Basic plans, India is slightly cheaper by less than 10 cents), even after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 in a span of a year

(Well actually, Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans by several cents, according to this site and this full list of Netflix pricing around the world by CC123 and Giu, however, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe)

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back)

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Possible Solution to Problem by toxicpuffle: For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase. Reportedy didn't work - proceed with caution

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails - EASIEST METHOD)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Again, the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here

      • Just an update, the issue why the gift card code didn't work was that my membership had not ended. So followed the advice here to cancel it immediately via webchat, got a refund, then redeemed the gift card and follow the rest of the process. All sorted and ready to save some money!

Thanks OP - this is amazing, especially during rising costs of living, what a relief!

  • is there any way to sign up to turkey netflix while the aussie subscription hasn't ended. can't find the screen to subscribe to new plan

  • It says "An error occurred during gift redemption - please try again later"

  • Does anyone know if my saved PayPal detail can be used for ongoing payment? My credit card expires in a month and I can't update it…

    • You could also wait and update your CC

      • Thanks. Will give that a try.

    • If my experience is anything to go by, no it can't.

  • +1

Easy peasy, the only thing that took awhile was getting the gift card which I assume was due to the time difference.

  • My Netflix works well here in Australia but the same account doesn't work in the Philippines anymore (where my mother lives). The app says "Your account can't be used in this location."

  • Hi I need help, I am using Nord VPN but still plan showing in AUD
I followed following steps (I have existing Netflix subscription)-
    1) I open Netflix on Chrome browser
    2) Logged In
    3) Australian mobile number is already added and verified
    4) Connected Nord VPN to Istanbul (Turkey) checked on https://whatismyipaddress.com/
    5) Went back to Chrome browser where Netflix was already opened, clicked on Account under the profile
    6) Change Plan page
and its still showing AUD prices.

Please help what wrong am I doing or missing some steps.

    Thanks

You didn't read the instructions properly. Either your account is not expired, Step 5 shouldn't happen, etc.
Go back and re-read the first post.

      • Yes, they did not read instructions properly. Need to start from beginning and not take a shortcut to “change plan”

  • So I let my sub expire… my backup payment method is Paypal.

Bought a gift card, redeemed it - says 100TL is added to my account, but won't let me proceed without a valid CC - and it doesn't allow me to select Paypal as secondary payment method.

Looks like I may have to resub and try again in Dec :(

    • +1

After trying a number of times unsuccessfully - and 3 failed Live chats - I opened an Incognito Mode browser and tried doing it without any saved cookies - worked like a charm.

      • yes, legend. The box "Skip this step" was showing this way, so I'm on. Gift cards all the way I think.

  • +1

thanks for the instructions, just followed the gift card method, and while there was a several hour delay from Turgame, everything looks to be working so far!

  • Hi, I used PureVPN and confirmed my IP is in Istanbul, however, when I have the VPN on and went to Netflix.com in private mode, it takes me to Netflix Japan. Something wrong from my end?

    • Could be the VPN problem. Try a different service?

  • +1

Awesome. Confirmed working and I've just renewed my subscription using Part 1 and Part 3 on Chrome browser and Windscribe browser extension with ANZ Visa and mobile number preloaded on the account. Thanks so much.

  • +2

I'm trying to add a card as a payment method via the live chat and they give me the form, however even they say that it couldn't be added. I've tried it with two different cards as well. Not sure what to do now…

    • Hmm, not sure what have happened there. Seems to work for many others

    • +1

I have just had the same issue with a newly-activated 28 Degrees card, both with and without VPN.

      • +2

I have the same issue with a new 28 degrees card.

  • +4

OMG I followed the above steps and it worked for me with no issues!

    1) I used free vpn - HOLA VPN Chrome extension

    2) Followed the step-by-Step guide, used the existing card on account from Bank Of Melbourne - FAILED/ERROR in processing payment.

    3) Jumped onto Turgame on another tab on Chome, while the VPN was on, got 100TL Netflix gift card. Took around 5 minutes to Gift Card to arrive.

    4) Went back to Netflix tab, Change payment method, add gift card number and bang Restarted my Membership to Family Ultra HD!

    5) Went into Accounts page and thought I will need to add a backup card but my CC card details were already there under 'Back up card', that's easy!

    VPN OFF

    6) Quickly logged off and log back in. Checked the home page - My Netflix watch list is the same, No weird content on home page. Seem to look just way I was using Netflix for the last 5 years.

    7) It will be interesting to see if the back up CC card works okay after one month.

This is a massive savings OP! Thank you for this post.

Love your work! And thanks to that some one in the comment that recommended Free Hola VPN Chrome extension.

    I F LOVE OZBARGAIN!

    • Thanks for your comment hahahaha :)

  • @I smell pennies. I let my subscription expire today and went tried but it asked me to update my ccv and expiry date on my card and then it kept declining :/ it was showing the Turkish pricing. I switched off my vpn to update my credit card and then it charged me the Australian price ;(

    • Same problem, I’ve tried two cards on the form and it hasn’t worked

      • Had the same issue, just bought the 100TL giftcard from Turgame.
Showed up by email in a couple of mins, redeemed the card and had my credit card as backup payment.
        It was simple.

    • Hi. Did you even follow the instructions carefully? Please proceed with Part 1 and Part 3 and let me know (the gift card route)

  • +1

I have a Netflix Turkey subscription that has been up & running for the past 12 months using a Revolut card… the folks at Revolut decided to change cards and issued a new card with a new number, which is working fine for other stuff but I cannot add to my Netflix account as a new payment method using web forms on chat.

The guy on chat told me the card has to be issued by a Turkish financial institution or else it won't work :(
    Is this a recent change?

    • End the current sub, go back to Part 1, followed by Part 3 in the instructions. Essentially restart the whole process. Let me know how it goes.

  • +1

Fantastic worked using part 1 and part 3 with no delays, except waiting 3 weeks for my membership to end. Well worth the wait.

  • hmm. annoying. My CC expired and I need to update the expiry date. Trying to do so asks me to put in a Turkish mobile number. Looks like I'll need to let it expire, and jump the hoops again.

  • Has this method worked for anyone recently? I can login to au account without vpn, connect to turkey vpn and go to redeem url. Now redeem URL redirects to tr-en/redeem. So VPN seems to work. But when redeeming gift card, "An error occurred during gift redemption - please try again later." appears.

  • Can't get it working, always asks for a Turkish mobile number.

My card on file has expired, and neither updating card info directly on the site nor going through the customer support payment update form works. Also tried updating it on TV, but it would just bounce me back to this URL: www.netflix.com/fixpayment which behaves similarly.

    • Did you try gift card method? (i.e. part 3)

      • yeah I think the loophole has been closed, if you don't already have a backup payment method adding a new card always now asks for a mobile number

        • If it doesn't work, restart from Part 1 in the instructions. @doweyy did it here. Saves a lot of hassle too!

  • Whoops me!

    This Step

"5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)"

I removed the credit card from the selection (while on VPN within Turkey account) and added a new one (28 degrees). But the new card was rejected and I can't re-input the old one. I'm using the Turkey account solely on Gift Card.

Is the only way to add credit card to turkey account is via chat? - does VPN need to be set to Turkey to do this or can it be done on AU?

    • Update: contacted Netflix Chat and tried the payment form. Seems all my cards (Aus) won't work as they're not the same country as sign up (Turkey).

Guess I could just top up the account with Gift Cards - not keen on this as I'm lazy.

Presumably if I were to start the whole Turkey-Netflix again for my current account, then I'd need to let the TL run out and login in to AU and update payment card info etc again, and then let run out after a month?

Or now is my account a Turkey one, and would I need to perform the instructions above but with AU and Turkey swapped? Eg. Sign in via VPN to Turkey then turn off VPN to update into for AU using AU gift card

      • Hi, I simply let my membership expire, and I tried my current card, but that didn't work.
I purchased a Netflix card from Turgame and used my current card as back up, working fine.

  • +1

Looks like even the form on chat needs to have a turkey issued card. They cracked down on that too

    • +1

This is my experience too. Looks like its just turgame gift cards from here on out or let it lapse, do 1 australian month, change credit card on file then let it lapse, then do another month of gift cards…

    • End everything (current sub), go back to Part 1, followed by Part 3 in the instructions. Essentially restart the whole process. Let me know how it goes.

  • +1

Thanks very much ISP, Revolut payment method failed today and followed the steps perfectly with the method to signup to Netflix AU for 1 month and load the new backup cards, cancel immediately, then signup to Netflix Turkey with gift card. Thanks heaps.

    • No worries doweyy, thanks for your comment. Enjoy :)

  • +1

    This is the best!
Worked like a charm with the gift card!
    That’s OP!!

  • Thought I almost had this going but I guess it doesn't like Westpac or MyState and I had my billing set to PayPal before I started it all. Now I cannot even sign up for Netflix without the VPN, just trying to get it going normally for the kids to watch their shit and it just rejects me every time on both bank cards…totally (profanity) lol

    • Get rid of PayPal, and go back to Part 1, followed by Part 3 in the instructions. Let me know how it goes.

  • Thanks, worked okay. Was able to successfully redeem turkey gift card. I have Paypal setup as my backup method. Will see in a month if it successfully able to use Paypal as backup payment method.

    • +1

PayPal backup doesn't work. Should of attached a card

      • Yeah, I recommend having a debit or credit card as backup. Reports of PayPal backup not working

  • +1

Thanks, worked for me. Good instructions.

  • @I Smell Pennies, I have been charged in EUR 12.11 instead of TRY, it's equivalent to A$19. I followed all of the steps including using Turgame gc :(
and then Netflix applied the same amount twice. I just checked my Netflix account and the subscription did not charged the fee to gift-card :(

what did I do wrong and how to change this subscription to TRY instead of EUR?

    • +1

False Alarm!! All good. I made a mistake when reading my credit card statements. thought I was charged twice by Netflix.

  • +1

Joined ozb and first comment ever just to say massive thank you to OP. Was contemplating so much if I should cancel Netflix and save some pennies. This worked like a charm with the GC method, thank you so much!

    • Thanks so much for your comment, enjoy @biscuitx :)

  • I’d just like to share that Part 3 GC method works, however, if you have PayPal as your main payment method, remove this and change it to a credit card instead.

  • I purchased the Turkish 100TL Voucher code from G2A.COM and go to redeem on the netflix site and says "The code entered is not valid"
    I'm using PART 3 - 4.0

I'm got my VPN working at Turkey istanbul( on whats my ip) and am still logged in.

    • Do you have to wait until the current netflix subscription has expired first??

      • I don't think you can add a giftcard with different currency as long as your sub is active.
Also, Part 1 of OP states to wait until it's expired:

Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

Or in your cast Part 3

        • ohok. i guess i may have to wait until its expired. I just thought that was optional to wait..

  • -2

Looking for single spot, if anyone interested in sharing please PM me. Thank you 😊

  • Well that's annoying!

Got someone attempt fraud on my 28 degrees MC and now a new card coming.

…and with Netflix due today, tried updating to my wife's 28D card (different number) and getting the dreaded Turkey mobile phone request.

Got my Australian mobile on the account too.

    • +1

…and with Netflix due today, tried updating to my wife's 28D card (different number) and getting the dreaded Turkey mobile phone request.

Got my Australian mobile on the account too.

Probably your VPN then. Change to another one

      • Thanks, tried VPN Turkey, added new card but asks for a Turkey mobile number.

What do you reckon? Let it run out and add a GC?

Edit: account is now "on hold". Got an email to update CC but VPN with direct link still asks for mobile.

        • +1

Cancel AU account, then redeem Turkish giftcard whilst on VPN to Turkey (Step 3). This will bypass needing a Turkish ph number, however you need to wait until your AU account has fully expired after cancellation

          • @antik: Thanks, it’s actually a Turkey account already. Maybe I need to delete the card and add GC instead?

            • +1

@Amazingly: Cancel the account so it’s fully expired, that’s a must. Then redeeem with Turkish GC with VPN

              • @antik: Cheers

                • @Amazingly: Thanks, got a GC from Turgame OK and restarted subscription. Removed the credit card that was cancelled due to fraud on it.

Couldn't add a new CC and I suspect it's Surfshark VPN.
Either that or it doesn't like me adding my wife's CC with her name.

I'll try again before the GC expires next month with one of the VPN's in the first post.

                  • +2

@Amazingly: As has been previously mentioned, it looks like Netflix may be cracking down on adding 28 Degrees cards (if not other Australian-issued cards) on Turkey accounts - either directly, or through the secure form accessible through a chat agent.

I think it might be necessary to let the Turkey subscription expire, start an Australian subscription for one month (and update the card as part of that process), let the Australian subscription expire and then restart the Turkey account through a gift card.

                    • @maxlawman: Cheers yes that’s what I was thinking if all else fails (and seems most have!).

I guess in future (until more crackdowns) just swap between mine/wife’s name every time the CC expires or canceled for fraud.

  • Just signed up super easy with giftcard and Commbank debit card as the backup payment. Does anyone know what TL₺93.99 equates to in AUD deducted from a commbank debit card, inclusive of fees and exchange rate? Also, aren't Netflix cracking down on shared accounts these days? Has anyone had their shared account banned?

    • $7.49 approx AUD. Not sure about the sharing bit

      • That seems like the actual exchange rate without any exchange rate markup or international currency fees?

        • My card doesn't charge international fees as they are waived

          • @noddypiper: What card do you have?

            • @antik: Mastercard ultimate

              • @noddypiper: Seems there’s no international transaction fees on that. I’ve only got a Debit Mastercard

  • +1

My attached Macquarie card had just expired and had no luck renewing it due to the mobile number now being required.

Signed up with a new account, requested the refund from Netflix via chat (refund was instant), redeemed Turkish code and now back in the game. I did have issues with Firefox repeatedly sending me to the AU site when redeeming the code so changed to the Edge browser and that sorted that problem.

Cheers for the well explained steps OP!

    • +1

Thanks for your comment and glad you got it working again :)

  • What's the best way to upgrade existing Turkey Netflix subscription from Basic to Standard? Can I just do it on the app without risking of having to revalidate payment? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can confirm after my turkey giftcard expired it charged my CBA card $7.63 for the family 4k plan! Thanks OP you legend

  • Hey guys,
I'm trying to purchase the gift card from Turgame but getting a failed payment error.

Order #1013849 was placed on December 2, 2022 and is currently Failed.

    Is this normal?

    • I got same error from Turgame when paying with visa card. So I purchased the GC from G2A. G2A accepts Paypal and the card was received instantly.

      • Yep G2A worked but now I get a different error.

I can redeem the gift card with no problem but when it asks for another payment method I get an error.

"There appears to be a problem with the payment method you are trying to use."

I cant proceed past this point.

        • Have you saved your CC details before turning on the VPN?
