Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix Subscriptions

Resharing after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix, except this guide may provide better guidance on sign ups. I've spent quite some time doing some testing and then making this post, so please share some love and let me know of any errors :)

Turkey is currently the cheapest place for a Netflix Standard and Premium subscription (for Basic plans, India is slightly cheaper by less than 10 cents), even after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 in a span of a year

(Well actually, Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans by several cents, according to this site and this full list of Netflix pricing around the world by CC123 and Giu, however, obtaining a Pakistan Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe)

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back)

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Possible Solution to Problem by toxicpuffle: For bypassing the mobile phone page for Part 2, what worked for me (at least signing up a few months ago) was turning off the VPN once you get to that page, so that it instead tries to verify your mobile with an Australian number instead of a Turkish one, and then turning the vpn back on after you’ve verified to complete the purchase. Reportedy didn't work - proceed with caution

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails - EASIEST METHOD)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method, or add a new card in (you must do this - do not skip it)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Again, the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here

    • I did earlier today and it was fine.

  • If I cancel my current Aussie subscription, can I still use it until it expires?

    • +1

Yes, your subscription will run until the expiry. I did the same thing

  • A very annoying thing happened to me. I subscribed to a new subscription, canceled it and waited for the paid period to end. I did exactly as it says in the tutorial, in the payment tab I added 2 gifts of 75TL. Reactivated my subscription with 93TL and I still got credit on the account.

I was still able to watch some stuff, but after a while I started getting a message that the content couldn't be played in my country. I tried to argue in the chat and was informed that I was using a payment method (giftcard) from another country and therefore I could not attend.

The only solution that support gave me was to cancel the subscription again and wait for the renewal date for me to reactivate the subscription with a payment method from my country. Detail: the subscription only renews on February 8th.

    Any solution?

    • Is it any content that cannot be played now or only certain shows you started watching while vpn was still on?

      • Nothing works. No content. After completing the subscription, I turned off the VPN and went to watch it on TV. It worked fine. After a few hours, I started receiving the message that this content could not be reproduced in my country. Now I can only watch it if I turn on the VPN :(

Worst of all, I have to wait more than 20 days to restart the subscription with a payment method from my country. Literally comiog did not work out.

        • o restart the subscription with a payment method from my country.

What payment method are you using?

  • My current payment method is paypal, do I need to change it to debit/credit card first?

My subscription is going to renew on 19Jan, so should I cancel it now and want until 19Jan or 20Jan?

    • Interesting question and I would expect so. Reason: I don't see that as an payment option once signed up via Turkey. Others here can clarify.
Cancelling = you can cancel now as it will still run until end of payment period.

  • 30-40% Increase incoming

We hope you’re enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. We’re updating our prices to bring you more great entertainment. Your monthly price will change to TL 130.99 on 17 February, 2023.

    • Ha, and just signed up yesterday. Ah well, still decent and works out around a $2 increase on the Premium. Yet to receive any notice myself on new account.

    • Yep looks like it’s going to be

Basic Plan: 63.99 TL per month
Standard Plan: 97.99 TL per month
Premium Plan: 130.99 TL per month

Might need to fly my chopper over to Pakistan soon.

    • Just got the email as well

  • +1

Of course i had just bought a 100 TL GC….don't buy another GC if you are planning on joining the Premium Plan…just sign up for the Standard Plan as per Part 3 above. Do not try and add a backup payment….just skip this step and your stored credit card will automatically be used. Once it all worked, i just went to my Netflix acct (without VPN on) and changed my plan to the Premium plan and 130.99 TL will be charged in a month's time. The new premium plan is about A$10 per month at today's exchange rate so still a significant saving to the Oz $24.99 per month.

    • Turkey still the cheapest (apart from Pakistan) after the price increase?

    • just skip this step and your stored credit card will automatically be used. Once it all worked, i just went to my Netflix acct (without VPN on) and changed my plan to the Premium plan and 130.99

Thanks for the tips, I selected Premium plan with the 100TL GC and allowed me to restart membership with next billing date is 13 Feb 2023 and I have to skip to setup the backup payment method (C.C. already in their record) otherwise it will ask for Turkey mobile number to SMS for verification.

      So far seems good.

Make sure you current membership has stopped working before use the GC to restart it.

    • This worked for me. When I tried to confirm backup card details it always asked for a Turkish mobile number but skipping that step just used my saved card and didn't require the Turkish number. Thanks.

  • Is it Turgame or g2a GC doesn't matter now?

Some said have problem redeeming GC, is it because of they redeemed before subscription expired?

    • Ordered GC from Turgame this morning still processing.

  • Thank you, Mate! This post was super helpful! Appreciate it!

  • I just got a notification that turkey premium prices are increasing to 130.99 TRY from 20th Feb.

Is there anything cheaper than that now?

    • Looking at the spreadsheet in the OP, Pakistan is the cheapest but I have no idea how you sign up there.

      • Looks like Argentina and Egypt next best bets.

        • Don't you need to take tax into account for Argentina?

    • +1

Well if they crack down on account sharing and we're not able to use via other country, then they will loose me as sub too.
Not sure Netflix will care, but it might hurt them more than they think if more people think like me.

Netflix's philosophy is: crack down on account sharing and overseas accounts, and total amount of subs will go up. I'm just indicating it won't work for me (but that's necessarily representative for all subs).

      • Netflix is so incredibly expensive compared to others, especially if you want to watch in 4K HDR.

They are also the only one constantly “cracking down”.

  • Took half a day to get the Gift card from turgame, ended up costing $9 for 2-screen plan, but the giftcard isn't working despite using a working VPN etc.

    • +1

Try another VPN, sometime may because of the provider , I used windscribe

      • I just tried Windscribe and still had the same issue;

The code entered is not valid.

        • Did you follow point 3-4 exactly as posted?

Login to AUS Netflix a/c without VPN first.

Turn on VPN and go to https://www.netflix.com/redeem.

Make sure Windscribe is set to Istanbul.

Make sure the currency display is Turkish Lira.

Are you sure the GC is in TRY? Double check your Turgame order details "Netflix Gift Card 100 TL Key TURKEY "

          • +1

@superforever: I opened a ticket and they responded with a near identical giftcard, but with a V instead of a U, so it looks like they gave me a wrong code. It worked using WindScribe Free.

  • +1

just got an email prices are going up again.

  • turgame don't seem to like protonmail accounts. They locked my account because I used one.

  • If I have an active Turkey account with working payment method (credit card), is it safe to just upgrade plan? Do I need to do it with or without VPN? Thank you.

    • +1

Without VPN on worked for me

  • Worked for me, thanks. I bought a 200TL code off Turgame's G2A listing and redeemed it using NordVPN.

  • If I am on 50/20 NBN plan, will Standard Netflix plan play smoothly for me? I suppose Premium plan won't work well? Thank you.

    • +1

I am on 25/10 plan and Netflix works just fine even on two separate devices streaming at the same time (& am on Premium). Whether it is playing 4k no idea but I don't need 4k :-)

      • Thanks for the feedback. I'll upgrade to Standard first and see how it goes.

        • NBN speed has nothing to do with Netflix plans for the most part. It's more about number of devices/screens you can watch on. Basic x1, Standard x2 (inc HD) Premium x4 (inc Ultra HD).
