  • Any chance of squeezing any sort of dedicated GPU in to one of these?

    • +1

It can fit a dual slot half height GPU, so a low profile 1650/1050/750ti can work.
Single slot cards like the 1030 also work too

It's the 180w power supply you're fighting against. CPU uses 65W

      • And I suppose you can't just upgrade the PSU…

Prebuilt motherboards are different to consumer motherboards, the socket on the board matches the pins from the manufacturer power supply, but they're not the regular 24 pins power and top corner additional pins.

Consumer power supplies are a 'fits all' solution, while prebuilts have a 'fits this' solution with less parts, i.e. less cost to produce.

    • It's i3 gen 8 cpu and low power. Perfect for browsing ozb and checking out your documents and photos. Don't expect anything more.

      • These were great CPUs for budget gaming rigs back in the day.

        • Way to low power for any gaming. I deployed a bunch of them to basic office staff. Failure rate was very low, pretty reliable machines. I'm pulling them out now and putting in newer stuff. Got a stack of them here with i5 chip. Basically trash now.

  • Damn - wish I actually needed another PC for the lounge.

  • Do I need this to replace my ageing Mac Mini as a HTPC?

    • It will probably be loud acoustically thanks to what looks like a stock CPU fan.

  • $40 shipping for me (Regional WA).

    • I didn't realise you frequent OzB :)

Always on the lookout for bargains :D

    • Screw that, they can get lost.

  • no hdmi

    • Likely it has DP, which also carries video and audio, just need an adapter.

  • whats the power use like?

$60 shipping for me, not as good as the 8500t deal

This looks like it'll be great for a Jellyfin/Plex server (If you can I'd recommend switching to JF, the UI/UX isn't quite as polished as Plex, but you also don't have a lot of the Plex bloat). Ideally, you want a 8-Gen+ CPU, meaning a Gen 9.5+ iGPU. That means should have QuickSync support for H.264, H.265 (inc 10-bit) and VP9 (inc 10-bit).

The absolute baseline is probably 4-Gen Haswell (you mostly need MPEG-2, H.264, VP8 & VP9. The next step up from 8-Gen being 11-Gen Tiger Lake adding 12-bit (VP9 only 12-bit decoding), and AV1 decoding.

Also Intel ARC offers H.264 VP9 10-bit Encode/Decode, H.265 12-bit Encode/Decode (all H.265 E/D is limited to 4:2:0, if you don't know you don't care, or need to know), and AV1 10-bit Encode/Decode. So this will potentially become a great option for HTPC with mid-range gaming performance and awesome Hardware encoding for personal video streaming.

  • $207 for an i3 with no HDMI and likely DDR3 ram?
Bneacttrader / Australian Computer Traders have got them beat on specs, price ($202.02 vs $158.40) and warranty (3 months vs 6 months) at the moment

The i5 being almost two years older isn’t a factor?

      • +1

Age isn't everything, not sure why you settled with an age-based comment and that's it when there's plenty more to compare and again age isn't everything

Allow me to compare the two:

        CPU & Chipset:
If you check out the cross-comparison between both processors, they're almost identical in terms of performance and specs (4 core 4 thread, both capable of 3.6ghz). There are a few benchmarks where the i3 did slightly better but for the average user it would be hardly noticeable.

Check out the Chipset cross-comparison on Intel's website, the two are pretty much identical apart from a few more perks with the Q270 (Aka the HP EliteDesk 800 G3)

        Onboard CPU Graphics
Check out the comparison here - This surprised me the most….. the Intel 530 HD (Aka HP EliteDesk 800) did slightly better specs wise then the UHD Graphics 630 (Aka HP ProDesk 600), I was expecting a massive difference between the two (I was expecting the UHD 630 aka the i3 to be the clear victor). Obviously one is Ultra HD (UHD) one is HD but specs and benchmark wise the 530 did slightly better; although I could also argue that it was pretty much neck and neck.

        https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-UHD-Graphics-630…

        Motherboard & Overall Model Spec:
Check out the cross-comparison, the only noticeable different is the higher RAM clock speed on the ProDesk

        Resale Value
(Disclaimer: This is more directed towards the technology illiterate crowd and in no-way how I view purchasing PC's as I look at specs vs value for money).
Those that have a poor understanding with computer specs will argue that:
        - The HP EliteDesk 800 G3 is better because of the name comparison (EliteDesk vs ProDesk / 800 vs 600)
        - A lot of people have the consensus that the i5 is newer than the i3

To someone that understands specs and what they're getting for the price point will think twice before making their purchase, to the common user that doesn't know much about specs they won't care and won't look beyond the surface (Per se) - and trust me I have a good general idea of how many people know little about computer specs as I have worked in IT previously and it would amaze you how many people have a poor understanding of computer specs and go with 'What looks good' and 'Higher numbers (eg. i5 vs i3, 800 vs 600 etc) = Better'

        TL;DR:
They are both very comparable specs wise, the i3 does marginally better in my opinion but such a difference isn't worth the additional $43.62 (Again, my opinion), although I'm running higher end specs with my PC's so I guess I'm a little biased… but you're correct, the i5 is 2 years older however age isn't everything.
