I paid ~$1200 on Singapore Airlines via Changi back in March for a September trip.

    Highly recommend visiting South Korea.

    • +36

$300 more for a premium airline is well worth it. Not sure I'd ever recommend Qantas on international flights.

      • Is this a general opinion?

I must be pretty ignorant of airlines these days… where could I find discussions/comments about airline service so that I can inform myself?

        • +1

Skytrax is a fairly decent indicator. But there will always be people who disagree with that too.

        • +16

QANTAS have a dinosaur fleet they use for their short haul international flights. They are having a massive upgrade of their fleet over the next few years and a refresh of their a380's. The only new planes they have are the 787-9's. You get a better in-flight experience with other premium airlines with newer and more modern cabins.

I was looking into going to Korea myself prior to this deal and it appears Qantas only fly their 20 year old a330's to Korea.

          • @carlordau: Very interesting… I would never have known. Thank you!

          • +44

            @carlordau:

            QANTAS have a dinosaur fleet

I mean their air hostesses are older, but that's kinda rude.

            • +5

@Munki: Kinda accurate though. I wonder if any other airline has more granny hostesses?

              • +10

@Geoff-bargain: @Geoff-bargain, yeah, a lot of the US airlines. I flew United a few months back and the Captain announced that one of the hostesses was celebrating their 50th anniversary working for United this week. Lots of applause etc. but doing the math, even if she started working at 16, that would make her at least 66!

            • @Munki: I recently flew Thai Smile and Nok Air. The hostesses were just WOW. They were models in my eyes haha Imagine Qantas had the same

          • +16

@carlordau: Honestly, the A330s are fine. They were refurbished not too long ago, and have modern seats. If anything, I prefer the 2-4-2 layout of the A330 over 3-3-3 787s or 3-4-3 777s. I would say the main disadvantage is no in-flight WiFi on international flights with Qantas.

          • +16

@carlordau: Having flown extensively on both the 787 and A330, I would much prefer the latter. The A330's 2x4x2 seating provides a vastly better economy experience than the 787's 3x3x3 layout. In business class there's almost no difference because the seat Qantas uses is basically identical in both aircraft.

Don't get so caught up on the age of the aircraft when there are many more important factors to passenger experience.

          • +1

@carlordau: What’s wrong with older aircraft?
In economy, my favourite plane to fly with Qantas was the 747 as I found the seats to be more plush and found they had the most legroom.
The 787’s on the other hand, although they are more quiet, better pressurization and newer cabin fitout, I find the economy seats less wide, tighter, and more thinner and less comfortable.
Unless you are travelling in business/first with the new seat products installed, I find better comfort in economy on older aircraft.
Qantas seems most concerned about installing the lightest/thinnest seats in economy to save weight and increase passenger density.

Hoping the new a350’s and a320/21’s Qantas is buying (having a slightly wider cabins vs Boeing) finally provide economy passengers with bit more comfort.

            • @loveyou3000: Nothing wrong with older aircraft. I agree for the reasons you have outlined. It depends how the airlines maintain them and refresh them when needed. Plush seats are the best but also need to be maintained more regularly because they lose the plushness and get tattered and worn. The design images for the refresh for the old a380's look amazing. It also depends on how the airlines design the interior for their newer plan cabins.

I find newer airplanes less fatiguing, for the reasons you have outlined, so I would prefer a newer plane for longer flights. It is also airline dependent. Singapore airlines 787's are fine for comfort and legroom is okay. Jetstar's 787 seats are uncomfortable, legroom and width are more squishy. Obviously a difference between a premium and budget airline, but just illustrating how design can be the mediating factor.

            • +2

@loveyou3000: Agreed. I flew on QANTAS dreamliner in Premium Economy and honestly I was so disappointed in the leg room (I'm 6ft4). It felt like standard economy. Thankful that I didn't actually fly standard economy, as that must have been awful.

              • +1

@b2dz: I have flown standard economy on a qantas dreamliner. Worst seat I have ever had the misfortune to fly in - a disgrace. Avoid them like the plague. And love the space on an A330.

                • @rwps: Same. My Dreamliner trip was about 4 hours. The A330 I have flown probably close to 50 times internationally and it's an excellent plane.

                  Newer isn't always better!

          • @carlordau:

QANTAS have a dinosaur fleet they use for their short haul international flights

Yes but they retrofit their interiors. The A333's for example are magnificent. A decent economy seat and a fantastic business class seat now. Spent 12 hours in it to Beijing a few years back and I was very happy with it. That said, I wouldn't be flying Qantas (Or Jetstar) until they get their act together. They are an embarrassment of an airline right now. A national disgrace.

        • +8

Qantas has a horrible customer experience on the ground, worse than most budget airlines. There is essentially no customer service, they have a form that no one replies to for months and when they finally do they still dont resolve your issue. There is no way they could be considered 'premium'. In the air their service is solid though, but meals are pretty underwhelming even in business (thats if you even get a meal, recent business class flight they were missing my wife's meal, and provided no compensation)

      • SQ economy isn't much to write home about these days either

        • +2

I flew them recently and it was fine. The staff in economy were far friendlier than the staff on Swiss in business!

          • @Geoff-bargain: That's interesting, the Swiss are normally so famous for their warmth and ability to put you at ease in a relaxing atmosphere.

        • +5

it's cattle class, what do you expect? the hostess to offer you a massage?

i just want to get from point A to point B without crashing and have enough space to move about just not to have muscle seizure from sitting too long.

          • -2

@slowmo: Not at all bud, just maybe more than one crew per 100 pax

            • +1

@caustic birch: One crew per 100 pax? A standard a350 seats around 200 in economy. Are you saying SQ flies with only 2 cabin crew in economy class?

              • @j0hnd0e: No I was exaggerating to make the point that the crew are stretched.

        • It's a 7 hour flight. 2 movies and a nap. You don't need much for that.

      • +9

The cabin crew on CX SQ EK are half of the age and weight of those on QF, and you get 🙂 not ☹️

        • +2

idk, i flew QF a fair bit in the past before the CEO decided to give himself a raise while cutting ground crew.

most of the time i see the sass from the crew to passengers that totally deserve it.

        • -1

Except you can't see their smile on SQ 😂

          • +2

@caustic birch: i don't understand, maybe you should expand further on what you mean.

      • Not in economy at least.

      • Qantas Sydney to Seoul is operated by Asiana Airlines.
        https://www.qantas.com/au/en/qantas-experience/network-and-p…

        • Qantas are starting direct Qantas and Jetstar operated flights to Seoul.

          • @eecan: Dunno mate. Just going by what's on the Qantas website.

            • @zealmax:

Jetstar will be the first to fly, with a Boeing 787 taking off thrice-weekly between Sydney and Seoul from November 2; business class is the place to be on this 11-hour Jetstar 787 trip, even if the seats are more akin to premium economy

December 10 sees Qantas follow with four Sydney-Seoul flights a week on its workhorse Airbus A330 featuring 28 lie-flat Business Suites, although there’s no premium economy cabin between business class and economy

              https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/qantas-flights-to-se…

If you go to the Qantas website and try to book a flight next year you will see the Qantas operated flights available.

      • An extra $300 for a slightly better plane? Is that really worth it for a 10 hour flight?

      • +17

Can't understand how you manage to fit that jetsetting lifestyle around your full time job of making uninvited, unwelcome, stupid and/or offensive comments on nearly every post here.

The only way it would make sense is if you're actually just a mean-spirited saddo somewhere in the Melbourne suburbs who actually has no idea about the world because you haven't travelled and aren't interested in anything beyond your pathetic, nasty little bubble.

    • My gf paid about $1300 back in April for a late june trip with Singapore airlines IIRC

  • +3

Sydney to Seoul Nonstop on Qantas for $887 Return

Yes, but what's the cost to make sure your baggage gets there too?

      • +3

There's always one in the comments aye

        Once bitten, twice shy

        • -1

And if you are a Frequent Flyer then you are going to get bitten a few more times with a few different airlines. Those other airlines also use the same baggage handlers….

      • +2

a spokesperson for Qantas said the rates of lost baggage for the first half of September had fallen below pre-Covid levels.

        Then goes onto say

.> The rate of mishandled bags on Qantas is
now five in 1,000 passengers for domestic and six in 1,000 passengers for our international services,” the spokesperson said. “Before Covid it was five in 1,000 passengers.

So now it's the same for domestic & worse for international.

.> if Qantas has outsourced baggage handlers, it's kinda on the contractor to ensure there are enough personnel to handle the workload.

No it's up to Qantas to provide a functioning luggage transportation service, its not like you have a choice to use an alternative provider. It's up to Qantas to make sure their outsourcer is fit & proper to provide the service an have the appropriate SLA's in the contract and that thy are enforced.

Joyce's aim was to reduce the union power within Qantas (fair enough) cut costs (again fair enough) and provide a better service to the public. But he's engaged a less then competent replacement which lead to worse standards of service for many customers.

Then he's gotten a payrise which is the real sting.

      • Besides, if Qantas has outsourced baggage handlers, it's kinda on the contractor to ensure there are enough personnel to handle the workload.

This is not how subcontracting works. It's always the prime's responsibility to ensure subbies are doing the work properly.

    • You need to also factor in the bribe to the authorities to let you in with your current vaccination status

      • -3

If you live in Queensland under quasi communism paying bribes is an everyday affair!

  • looking at all these good travel deals… how's the airport situation? I mean paying for cheap tickets is one thing…. 4 hour kilometre-long queues makes it all not worth it.

    • +4

I flew out of Sydney 2 weeks ago and took about 10 mins to clear customs.

      • +1

Same. Flew out 2 weeks ago and returned this week. Queues at Sydney was not long.

        • this is encouraging news!

  • +4

Crazy high chance of cancellation, pass.

    • What are the chances ?

      • +2

        Crazy high.

        • 2.5%

    • +2

Fully agreed if you bought the cheap tickets during school holidays.

Qantas can keep selling tickets even it is oversold x10 of all seats available.
Then they can simply refund you (who bought the cheapest tickets) without compensation according to their contract. They are not bound to give you an alternate flight

      • +2

Exact same situation happened to me.
I go with Singapore airlines by default now and have had an amazing experience so far.

      • How are they allowed to do this?

  • -3

Don't go to the super-packed places!

  • Man thisnis exactly what i needed. But was hoping for this sale to happen in march for august september

Going to conference in seoul so hoping for anither sale.

    • +2

      hoping for anither sale.

      Here you go…

      • +1

Looks good. Will help me during the conference!

        • "Nae jist anither gin, this een's different!"

Maybe you can get it duty free ?

          • @jv: If it makes me talk like that at a korean conference this will be interesting.

    • There are dates in August and September :)

      • Yep but going to hawaii in jan feb so hoping for a similar sale in march as its for 3 people and saving for current trip but thankyou

  • +2

I just returned on Monday from an 11 day trip. Got flights with Jetstar from Melbourne to Seoul for three of us for $1,800. Was the first Jetstar flight to Seoul and was booked a long time.
Had a great time and highly recommend it!

    • Would you be able to share me your itinerary?

      • -4

Yes, include the reservation numbers too

      • +1

We flew into Seoul for three nights, train down to Gyeonju for two nights, train to Busan for three nights, bus to Jwonju for two nights the bus back to Seould for one night. Transport between cities is relatively cheap and easy to do.
We mainly visited temples and castles, are tonnes of food and just explored.
If you're planning to drive over there, please ensure you have all the right paperwork, we got over there and international drivers licence wasn't enough (hence the bus/train with a three year old).
Let me know if you have any specific questions :)

  • +2

If looking to go to Japan, try the multi city as sometimes you can come back via Japan at a much cheaper rate the a return Japan flight. After enjoying Korea, you can easily get to Japan as Korea has so many flights to Japan, including to all the major airports like HND, KIX, CTS and FUK, but also to other minor airports too like Kagoshima.

    • I'd love to do a Korea/Japan trip, I wish flight platforms could more easily find you the best deals to do this.

      • +1

        You could try ITA matrix

    • -7

      FUK no

    • I should also note probably don't try to multicity the Korea to Japan leg as Qantas don't have that many specific codeshares that would cover it.

  • -2

Korea's indoor mask mandate may be partially lifted by then, in case that's important.

  • +1

Melbourne has no Seoul too , I need one for that too please!

  • +3

Hard to know if to trust Qantas these days

  • +1

This is cheaper than some domestic fares !!

    • -1

Also seems cheaper than going to NZ

  • When is a good time to visit Seoul?

  • Currently in Seoul now.
I paid $1250 return for business class flying Jetstar from Sydney.
Not a true business class but probably equivalent to Qantas premium.

    • idk about jetstar business class, i've flown those before, those are economy or economy plus when compared to qantas at best.

      • If Jetstar Business equals economy, what does that make Jetstar Economy?

Certainly accept and agree that Jetstar Business is not really "Business" though.

        • it is what it is. budget.

no illusions of grandeur here, budget airlines exists to service a target market. if someone is complaining about how bad it is in comparison to a full fare airline, they are not the target market. (although people should complain if they are getting subpar service even for a budget airline)

however, it's really weird to try to make comparison to full fare airlines.

almost everything is different, seating sizes, payment for meals, luggage allowances to service levels and even flight times and options for open jaw travel.

  • Any deals for Manila return from Adelaide around January ?

    • +1

Prices for Manila are around $2k in January, if you can wait til feb they drop to around $1k and then in March they are $700 on Malaysia Airlines.

  • Cannot find any deals around QLD school holidays unfortunately.

    • yeah rare to get deals around school holidays in general :(

  • -3

Any promotional tickets to Brazil? Thanks
