bought one last time, good device if you are in the Google ecosystem

    • +2

if you are in the Google ecosystem

Why? You just need wifi to use it.

    • I'm not in Google ecosystem and I have successfully and happily been using this device and never thought I've been missing out not having an Android phone or Google Home.

  • Thanks OP! Bought one via cashrewards.

  • Does this support ultrawide res?

  • Thanks got one just because.

    • -2

      Same.

I keep a spare in my man bag in case of emergencies…

      • Hd version would been fine for 39 but this is a bargin.

  • Do these work well with apple devices?

    • +4

What do you mean? It connects to your TV via HDMI. No other devices/requirements other than wifi.

    • +2

Can cast from iPhone fine. Also has Apple TV app so you can use that on the Chromecast if you pay for that subscription.

  • Wouldn't recommend this unless you have a nonsmart TV. Mine constantly messes up the syncing between video and audio, and the continue watching section never properly syncs through from the apps (main ones like Netflix and Disney+)

    • I was thinking the same. Whats the point of this with android tvs

    • +7

I have a cheap 70" android tv and the menus/playback can be extremely laggy. TV has been fantastic ever since I started using Chromecast instead.
Just bought 1 more for my 65" tv.

    • +1

I have been running one for about a year and a half, and once I sorted out the HDMI Audio delay on my TV, I haven't had an issue. The continue watching also seems to be accurate most of the time for me.

    • Really? Syncing not an issue for me. You didn't buy one of the underpowered HD cheapies did you? Continue watching is usually an app compatibility issue. Don't know about Disney but the Netflix app sucks, they haven't bothered to write a proper Android TV app, it hasn't even got voice search.

      • Maybe I have a faulty one. I watch certain tv shows daily from both netflix and disney+ but they keep dropping off my continue watching which is extremely frustrating. As for the audio syncing, I'm not sure how to fix that but it happens almost every second day.

I have a samsung smart tv and the UI isn't that laggy. But I thought getting a googletv would be nice to have all my apps and shows in one menu. It becomes pretty useless for me because I need to enter all the apps individually anyways due to the above issue.

        • It sounds like you might need to play with sound format settings on your TV and/or soundbar. PCM works fine on my Samsung TV, otherwise a web search is your friend.

As for Continue watching, I confess I ditched the Google TV interface for Wolf Launcher, with Launcher Manager 1.04 to switch between the two. No ads, junk suggestions or Continue watching, just apps. Easy enough to open the app and continue watching from there.

  • I literally said to myself next time there's a deal I'll buy it. Stuck to my word.

  • Thanks OP got one.

  • +2

nice mate, will replace my old voda tv with this one (rip voda tv, truly punched above its price class haha)

    • +2

Looking for a reason to buy this but my Voda TV is still going strong

      • legit sad my voda tv died - but the remote just had a bloody mind of its own. Sometimes works okay, sometimes it will suddenly stop.

i used to get around this by using the google home app but then it kept giving me error saying the voda tv didnt support that function …

shame because i bought it at the same time many ozbargainers grabbed it too so had it for YEARS

        • Did you a try a factory reset? Though it sounds like the remote more than the box.

        • Did you try the Android TV remote app? I often control mine with it, so remote has been spared the usual battering over the years.

I picked this up anyway to replace a Firestick, but I'll rock with the VTV until it's dying days.

  • +5

Stop it. I’ve spent too much last 2 weeks already.

  • how does it compare to amazon fire cube 3? I have Nvidia shield TV pro paired with a TV, now looking for another one to pair with the new Samsung QN90B (tizen os)..

    • In the same boat, need for Q90B ..hate it's OS. Bought Fire TV 4k stick for $50 ..haven't used it yet

      • Yes, I was thinking about fire tv cube 3 as well, but to run add free stube side loaded (like ai do in nvida shield) as of now went with google tv in this deal.

  • I already have an Android sony tv. Do i need this??

    • +1

      Lol no. But just because.

    • it's basically the same screen

    • Unlikely. If it's the Google UI that using the google store apps them this product would be redundant. As a google TV sounds like you don't need this. Maybe add the model and others more experience can be definitive.

If it's the Sony UI then this would work. For example, we have a new Samsung Frame that has Tizen software. So different UI. I'll be using my Google TV to plug in so it's easier to use.

    • No point if you have android tv i guess

    • Depends on which version of Android TV you have

    • +1

I have Android TV and Shield. But bought it anyway, thinking to bring it during travel. i.e attach it to Hotel room TV

    • Only if your Android TV is old, now slow, and not getting updates. Like my 2016 Bravia :(
Plugged this bad boy in and it felt like a whole new TV with how snappy it is.

      • Mine is 2021 model

        • Mine is 2021 model

Should be already Google Chromecast TV

    • My Android Sony TV is slower than an iPhone 4 and keeps dropping internet. It's about 5 years old so I bought one of these so I can stop contemplating throwing the tv remote at the tv

      • Lol

  • thank you

  • Can you load on any 3rd party apks? And have Firefox with extentions and everything?

    • +2

      Side load yes.

    • If it's anything like ChromeOS or normal android on phones etc… Chrome Browser will allow extensions, but Firefox and other browsers, no. Just my experience.

  • Price error?

    • They have a few listing for the 4K version difference price

      • +1

I mean this listing might be for hd version

        • Nah, bought a couple a few weeks ago for the same price and definitely 4k, the HD is even cheaper.

  • +1

got one. Cash rewards tracked in less than 10 mins with the rewards of $12.72 showing up on my rewards account. Thanks OP.

  • +1

    Buy now, think later.

    Great find op!

    • thats what i did!

  • yep thsi works with Nvidia Geforce now streaming to guys if you guys sub to game streaming you can just pair a xbox controller to the unit.

    • But not all buttons are mapped correctly though

  • Price seems to have gone up to $79.95

    • +1

Use code CM10 at checkout which will give you $69.95 and also make sure you purchase through cashrewards for an extra 20% cashback so should end up costing you $57.36 overall :)

      • +1

Yeah i realised after i posted that i was an idiot and its a coupon code not just a list price.

        Mondays……..

      • I think cashback is for new customers only

  • Thanks Cobber!

  • Is it worth upgrading from Chromecast Ultra?

    • +2

I have both the ultra and this and imo the dedicated remote and standalone google TV UI is worth upgrading to.

In my experience the remote and UI makes it convenient to browse for content and play it immediately rather than searching for what to cast from your phone. You also get to share the experience or pain of endlessly flicking through what to watch with your family instead of them staring at a static screen/screensaver while waiting for you to cast something xD

      • Especially because you can use the Chromecast remote to turn the TV on/off and for volume.

        • Amazon Fire TV sticks also support CEC controls. So volume, source/input selection and power etc.

  • Would this be an upgrade to my Xiaomi Mi Box S 4k?

  • Thanks OP. Came out to $57.23 after cashback.

  • This or Amazon Fire stick 4K?

    • +1

Overall I'd probably say this. It really depends on what you're doing and your use case. One benefit of the Amazon stick is that it has a web browser, unlike the Chrome sticks.

Amazon 4k stick is quite powerful SOC wise, compared to the 4k Chromey.

Though both sticks are quite "hackable/modable/sideloadable" as such.

      • but this is better if you like casting..

  • Any reason to get this if I'm using a HDMI cable from my PC?

    • A lot android apps you can't run on PC and remote

      • Doesn't windows 11 have an app mode now?

    • +2

Power consumption, dedicated interface, remote. Always on/available.

Do we trust Big W with orders these days now after the last massive cancelation wave

  • can i increase playback speeds on the netflix app?

  • Guys, thinking of getting this primarily for travelling reasons - like going to a hotel where their TV doesn't have inbuilt Netflix.

Would this be sufficient? Only thing that I'm hesitant about is that some hotels have splash screens for logging in (which was an issue in the very first Chromecast, not sure about this one).

Would this or the fire stick 4k be good??

  • Does Big W offer have pickup or free delivery option?

    • particular items are free delivery, everything else is spends over $99 I believe.

      • I went to the big w store and can only see $10 delivery option for this

  • This or Apple TV 4K ? Thanks

    • +1

Depends on the ecosystem you have - Apple gear (iPh, iPad, Mac) then Apple TV….else Google will do the job for TV alone. New Google remote is very handy.

Does anyone know how long it takes to post usually.

The site says it posts between 24-48hrs.

Bit it has been 4 days now since I purchased.

    • I was wondering the same thing. Mine hasn't shipped either, hopefully it will ship soon.

    • Same has not been dispatched. Checked stock levels at Big W and there's plenty apparently.

    • +1

I'm in same boat, still pending dispatch. Will have to contact them tomorrow.

    • Just chiming in to say same here lol

    • Same here :/

    • me 6

So basically they didn't have enough but were happy to keep taking orders.

      • +4

And didn't even bother to contact anyone to let them know. Happy to keep the money it would seem!
