What Mobile Plan Is Everybody on These Days?

The only reasonable one for me appears to be Optus's $90/PM plan which is 'discounted' to $70 per month for 500 gigs - otherwise, it's like $60 a month for 100gigs.

@Mcuser: I have no idea what you're hoping to achieve with your reply. Was that an attempted bragging that went completely wrong? 🤔

          • @Mcuser: Cool story

    • +2

I can answer this. I was on a plan as you describe, but decided to drop home internet and just tether off my mobile. So my 500 GB /month plan with Optus [which is month to month] suits me perfectly. And I save the $80/month I used to spend on shinternet @ home.

      • -1

That makes sense, appreciate the answer.

      • Or you can have another data sim and use it as home internet and shared data with the 500gb plan.

  • +3

    Boost

  • +15

Boost 240gb. Paid around $216 so comes to around $18 a month.

Boost are the only MVNO that has full access to Telstra’s network.

    • +1

No 5G ….yet. Just temp trial in some places. I am on Boost and I have the advantage of ringing mobile to mobile NZ, Sth Africa, Ireland all included so all cheap for us.

      • +1

It's interesting that initially they said 5G was just a trial but their website everywhere is saying access to the full Telstra network with nothing saying that it's only 3G and 4G.

I've been getting 5G on my Boost Mobile service and I suspect it's here to stay, especially given Belong now have it. It's in their interest to ensure you can chew through your data faster and have to recharge earlier.

        • The trial is suppose to end in January, so let's see what happens…

      • +1

I only joined Boost in July, but have had 5g ever since joining all over Victoria.

      • And no eSIM

  • Boost sim only $30.00 month

  • +5

Boost mobile plan is great. Wifey and I are in our 3rd year now of the annual plan with "all you can eat" plus O/S calls included and bags of data. Even at $200 per year that is only ~$16/month for a great service with a bunch of ad ons. The 5G trial is continuing so data speed impressive.

As fate would have it for an internet plan we use Optus 4G Wireless Broadband. About $67.50 for 500GB/month.

    Location Bargara near Bundaberg.

  • +1

$90 a month?!? Does that include a phone? I'm on Catch Connect $89 for 12 months with $45 Catch credit lol. My data usage is a couple of gigs a month

  • Do you need actual service in regional victoria Telstra will get you service in maybe 50% optus maybe half of that all the others telcos maybe 5 to 10 % of regional. Problem is Telstra is much more expensive but if you need to be able to contact work etc there the only option.

  • Optus $45/mo for 80gb + unlimited international calls to and in zone 1 + 4gb roaming in zone 1

    • -2

That's the fing though, optus' cheapest plan At 100gigs is like $59, $10 less than the 500 gig.

      • I’ve had this plan since 2019…

    • How do you get this on $45? Im on the same plan but im charged the full $50.

  • -1

I’m on $99 a month with 300GB. Only use like 5GB a month. Wondering if there is anything cheaper. Actually the whole family is paying that $99 each as well, not sure how much they use. Seems like a lot of $ for something I don’t use. Just like all the subscription tvs. Foxtel is the same price and hardly use it… :(

    • -1

I'm considering using Belong, but I not sure how the coverage is in Sydney.

    • +1

It’s ozbargin mate, the home of messaging Telstra chat for a $20 credit! Shame on you paying RRP

      • +5

I was trying to be funny. And bait a response……sorry.

I just find it amazing people spend so much on plans and subscriptions that are hardly used.

Who needs 500GB! A MONTH! I didn’t get thru 130GB with Boost for the whole year.

        • You'll find if the plan includes VoLTE (ie set up so everything automatically goes through wifi rather than the mobile tower whenever you're in range) then your data requirements can become tiny.

I could not understand how someone would ever use anything like 500GB a month - with VoLTE 10GB a month is more than enough, and that's with heavy use of the phone for Youtube etc.

Aldimobile, Amaysim, Boost, Coles, Woolworths, Belong or any other reseller will do you a small yearly plan far cheaper than $99 a month. Best to choose a reseller that uses the same network you are currently using (ie Telstra, Optus or Vodaphone) - you have to go looking in the fine print of the reseller's web pages for this information. This just avoids any possible mucking around getting your phone unlocked from a different network.

    • Telstra 365 Prepaid is only 300 dollars. You get more than 5 gb of data.

      • Boost was $150, for 130GB

        • +1

I use both, I find boost sometimes lose reception when I go on drive , Telstra works just fine. But I bought Telstra for 180 dollars when it was on special with coles discount

        • I renewed with Boost a few months ago prepaid 1 year $200 for 130GB - for new customers I think it was $50 rebate if you rang them - as I use my mobile mostly with home wifi, the previous year I used only 19 of 80GB - just checked my balance in nearly 4 months I've used only 11 of 130GB - so way more than I usually need - unless I go traveling

    • I don't get the point of anything more than 5-6GB for a mobile plan, since you either already have unlimited home broadband (for streaming, big downloads, etc), or you don't in which case even 400-500GB/month won't be enough (if the mobile plan is your one and only internet data connection).

  • amaysim 12 month plan,1st time 35.00 cashback, 99.00 60gb renewal 120.00. 10.00 a month not bad!

  • +3

if you are looking at 28 day plans take note that youre going to be paying 13 times a year.

    • good catch - most wouldn't notice that slippery dip !

    • Yep, (profanity) Telstra Prepaid. The only cheap plan with usable data is $30 per month aka 28 days which works out to be $32.50 per calendar month… Just switched to Boost as they use the full network.

  • +2

"Sid has a 5 year plan."

    "What is it? Don't Die?!"

  • +1

$10 per 28 days for 4gb and it rolls over indefinitely. Amasym.

  • +1

Amaysim $20 for 25GB per month, I only use around 5-10GB since I'm always on wifi at home. It really gets me how people need 50+ GB unless you don't have home internet I suppose.

    • +3

Not having WiFi at home is like not having hot water or electricity to me. It's like living in the 1940s.

      • -2

        totally - except totally not.

when I was a child I was chopping wood, to light the fire, to heat the stove, to cook breakfast and heat water for the bathroom.

in recent years the worst suffering I've heard of many teenagers is 'no internet ? OMG - how can I survive ?!?!?!'

  • +4

Unless you're using that as your home internet, what do you possibly need all that data for?

I'm on Belong's $25 prepaid, gives me 20GB a month, rolls over, I never use it all, so I have ~300GB stockpiled now. I stream music all the time when out in the car, podcasts when out walking, and have them set to the highest quality audio, not infrequently tether to my phone to work while I'm out, and that includes having Google Meet calls, and still I don't put a dent in data usage.

I really fail to see how $90 (even discounted to $70) a month is 'the only reasonable option'.

  • +1

$30 Telstra prepaid with rolling data. I use like 1-2gb a month as mainly on wifi. I think you get 10gb per month but I'm at 122gb left with it rolling over.

    • I'm exactly the same - even though I use my phone on the go all the time (not watching YouTube vids though) I never seem to need that 10GB, and have a ridiculous amount of banked data for when I do.

Since I mountain bike a lot in isolated places, I would never consider anything but full Telstra coverage.

    • Change to Boost 12-month sim, same network, more bang for buck. I was on the same plan. It's actually $32.50 pm as Telstra uses the 28-day recharge window…
The current offer (with Cashback) makes it $16.67 pm ($200 per year) for 21GB~pm (260GB per year) split over the whole year, that's less than half the cost and more than twice the data.

      • Telstra points are worth a bit too

        • Baha worth sweet FA really. Certainly nothing near the savings to be had at Boost

  • TPG $30 40GB - thinking about switching to kogan or boost deals

  • Vodafone. Earlier was on boost but it does not support esim/apple watch

  • +2

    Belong $15/month 5gb.
I buy a phone outright for around $500 every 3-4 years.
    Screw $90/$100 plans

  • $14 amaysim for 4gb
Has rollover databank so got 33gb, don't really need that much with WFH

  • I have been on Kogan (Optus network) $120 for 100GB for the last couple of years but recently coverage has turned to crap. I'll be switching to a Boost $200 for 140GB plan (actually cost $140 after discount/cashreward) next week, which my wife is already on and from which she gets great coverage.

    • +1

      thought Kogan was Vodafone light

    • Kogan is definitely Vodafone, and it shows when you leave metro areas. Still, it's been terrific for 50 weeks of the year.

    • Sorry my bad. Yes Kogan is Vodafone.

  • +1

Moose mobile $23.80/m for unlimited call and text and 25gb data the misus is on $14/m with 5gb

  • Troll post of the week goes to…
Edit - Unless the lack of detail is the key here. I feel like you are using your mobile for home internet too…

  • 4 of us on $80 per month Aldi family plan and we have loads of rollover data.

  • +1

    OP …
it really depends on your personal uses + budget / etc.

1.a.) how much GB/month do you currently use on your phone?
1.b.) tried using WIFI where possible - at home or even free WIFI at different places, even your own workplace (just don't go looking up XXX stuff on your work WIFI … but where I am we are allowed to watch netflix/etc on work WIFI).

    2.) target budget?

Personally, I used to be with Virgin Mobile - who then left AU market afew years ago - bought out by Optus (but managed to keep my grandfathered plan).

I pay $25/month … 30GB data (+ rolled over if unused). Unlimited SMS + fairly cheap AU-AU timed mobile calls.

IF you are using more than even 50GB/month data … then you need to look at reasons why (+ how to mitigate this).
For those that are rural - they certainly have their reasons … although skylink is starting to make major inroads here.

  • +2

Woolworths Pre-Paid $20/month. 10% off groceries each month makes my phone plan essentially free.

  • +1

Use work phone. About to start a 60GB 12 month expiry sim (bought on this deal) in my personal phone (which I rarely use).

  • coles mobile $120 120Gb (normal price $150) a year , Unlimited call to whatever countries that I sometime call to.

    per month $10

    • Same here.

      $10 for 10GB per month.

      Bargain.

  • Im reading the comments for the best deal on mobile and I'm feeling nausea just seeing so many plan out there.

  • im on more 44gb for 18 pm with intl calls and databank

  • $22 27GB
vaya mobile, have been with them for many years and no issues so far

    • Same here, been on since the jeenee days.

      • Ohh yes same here, was originally jeenee as well but just transferred over when jeenee closed down!

    • +1 $16 for 16GB.

  • +1

99 dollars per year Coles prepaid. International calling and 60 GB per year data included.

  • Telstra 150 prepaid

  • TPG - 25gb for $25

  • Boost it is!

  • +2

I use Aldi but their 4G has been slow for ages (like the past year). Thought I was crazy until I Googled it recently and turns out Telstra throttle MVNOs other than Boost, so I am making the switch to them.

  • About $140/year for 300GB. I grab the Kogan BOGOF SIM each year.

  • +2

Boost is the best and economical

  • Changed from Amaysim to Kogan just a week ago. Should have gotten the Amaysim deal posted here earlier and continued with them.

On a 365 day plan. My usage is too random each month for monthly plans.

  • +1

I use Felix and regularly use 200gb per month. $35 ain't bad but you also get what you pay for with some
connection issues every now and then (a trademark of Vodafone network). Customer service is good with their live chat

  • Boost - currently on the 140gb plan which I expect to last about 6 months. I'll likely try a longer Vodafone prepaid SIM in the middle of next year when I'm mainly in Sydney.

For home, work + trains, time in regional areas Telstra is best. Vodafone is passable but definitely more frustrating.

I generally do Boost 12 months then Vodafone 1 month and repeat.

I may also go to a Telstra postpaid plan if the stars align - JB offer, still on Vodafone, and a new phone that I like.

  • +1

$30/100GB a month with databank. I have like 800GB right now.

  • I am woolworths mobile $25 for 25gb they offer 10% discount so when i take discount i get it for free as most weekends i spend over 300 on groceries. I was with vodafone but they had no low price plan so glad that I discovered Woolworths they use telstra network so much better coverage than vodafone

  • Usually aim for below $10 a month on various Sim only plans. Blows me away people still go with the big Telco plans at $50+ a month.

    • Well sometimes companies reimburse the plan (or you lose the benefit) so it still comes out cheaper than $10 a month.

  • So that's how we are giving away our mobile phone provider details now?

  • $70 for 500GBs per month is good if you have good Optus reception and atleast a consistent 4G connection. Depending on your usage levels, you don't need NBN. Usually reception is a big problem.

  • -1

Boost Mobiles $200 for like 200GB over a year. i barely use data so works out super cheap for me.

    • that's expensive in ozb scale

      • $16.67 per month for full Telstra coverage not Telstra Wholesale with 200gb per year?

      • $16.67 a month isnt bad, there is definitely cheaper options. Unfortunately reception is really really bad in my area and Telstra is the least sucky.

  • Amaysim $10, 4 gig a month. Plenty of wifi options for me.

  • Amaysim $9/Month - 55GB

    • Amaysim is per 28 days.

  • Woolies as primary sim and amaysim as esim. I couldnt resist the amaysim 9 bucks for 55 gig so using that for data for the first 6 months then will revert back to the included data on Woolies. The nice thing is i can swap between telstra and optus coverage if need be. Together it works out <30 bucks a month.

  • Circles Life promo $14 for 40GB.

  • Boost 12 month plan and cheapest 3yr iPad plan with optus.
Btw Boost has wifi calling when you're roaming so you will only need to add a local esim plan and it'll just keep on working through local data.

  • Boost. $11.25/m for 11.67gb

Last year was Amaysim $4.60/m for 13.75gb

  • Currently Telstra due to a JB deal, after contract will probably go Woolworth for the 10% monthly discount on shops.

  • Circles $10/month, 30GB student plan.
I also referred my partner and am getting $10 off a month for 6 months.

  • +1

    Boost 12 month - 300gb.

    • $299 cha ching!
