    Good choice of destination :)

We also have political unrest with China. Perhaps Russia is a good place for you to be atm?

          • +15

@xoom: China has been “about” to invade Taiwan for decades. Maybe try pay less attention to sensationalist media and get out there a little.

            • -3

              @Setiawan:

Maybe try pay less attention to sensationalist media and get out there a little.

I wasnt even about that. Was just concerned thats why im asking yeah. Its how one learns by asking questions. But i guess its easier to just shoot someone down. Than educate them.

              • +5

@xoom: I don’t see a question from you, only declarative statements. What are you asking?

                • @Setiawan: Is it safe to go there? I guess going by those who offered constructive comments that it is relatively safe. Issues with traffic. But hey. So is most of south east asia really.

And nice food also according to some. Great to hear.

I guess the 'perhaps' required needing to read between the lines. Will keep that in mind and next time I like to learn something.

        • -6

          Great light show in Ukraine.

Western media - China about to invade Taiwan omfg CCP so bad
Taiwan people - nothing new here folks. Same thing for decades

        FYI I'm taiwanese

        • -1

China doesn't need a war at the moment. It has waited a long time for reunification. A few more years is not an issue.

The US proxy puppet just resigned. The Taiwanese voters have decided they don't want a war. They want prosperity.

    • +11

      Good food ^_^

    • +5

combine all the best parts of Asia into one country, and out pops Taiwan. Food is excellent, people are friendly, easy to get around, relatively cheap, good scenery

Way better than the belligerent neighbour

      • +27

        Every country has a history.

But let's look at what is happening today.

Forced abortions, forced organ harvesting, detention of Muslim minorities, no freedom of religion, forced COVID lockdowns, jail for those who protest or go against the CCP party line.

Now, which country am i talking about?

        • +10

LOL all the CCP minions negging.

        • +6

          Sound like Melbourne

        • How about Australia take all those Muslims? Do you agree?

        • -1

Per capita CCP probably no worse than Australia, it's pretty hard to bring 1 billion people out of rural living conditions/poverty.

      • +7

Eh their history is no better than the PRC's…

Thank you CCP comrade for your valuable contribution. The party approves of your message!

        • +9

Their social credit just increased for their support of the CCP.

        • You obviously aren't familiar with the white terror or the ongoing class differences that exist between families who migrated with the KMT and those who were living there prior to the revolution.

            • -2

@1st-Amendment: We are comparing two states that for the better part of the past century have been led by an ethnic-majority government which has a rich history of murdering dissenters. Both states also largely comprise of the same ethnic majority. Democracy/autocracy isn't the aspect to focus on unless you actually think something as simple as a reformation of government can cleanse a nation of its sins.

It seems instead, most use the Taiwan issue as a platform to laud their own 'virtues' and appreciation for human rights, without having ever engaged with Taiwanese history or the Taiwanese working class.

Yes, the political class enjoy their privileged status and the intelligentsia don't mind it either, and you'll continue to hear from them about the importance of Taiwanese independence for years to come.

For everyone else though, from the unskilled labourer on $5 AUD an hour, through to the office workers who have to come in and work the weekend before a public holiday, there are many whose quality of life would remain the same or improve should the CCP seize the island.

Talk is cheap and the question remains, would you like to see Australian blood spilled in the name of Taiwanese independence? As a patriotic Australian, an enemy of the Chinese state and a political science graduate who has lived in Taipei, I still have to say no.

You're entitled to your own opinion of course and it's still a great place to go for a holiday. Food is affordable, breakfast is always great, Hualien (Toroko) is beautiful in March and it's easy to get around on the rail network.

      • +2

The country’s corruption is no worst than the corruption here. As for the treatment of native Taiwanese aboriginal, I believe it’s better than here. They have the same access to healthcare education and jobs as the rest of the population.
        Maybe check the facts first

Who has the moral high ground here?

        • +1

I checked my facts when I lived and studied in Taipei.

    • +14

      Success!
      You have angered the CCP

It hurt itself in the confusion

'the Australian Government does not recognise the ROC as a sovereign state and does not regard the authorities in Taiwan as having the status of a national government.'

      • +9

I think thats so we can Buy Buy Buy from another country….

        • +8

Don't forget sell sell sell - rocks, degrees and food mostly

      • +1

The same can be said for America, Canada before the independence war. So what’s the point

    • Reminder, he’s Agent Q from a Western country and we know what it means.

      • +9

It means i'm avoiding going to China or Hong Kong because they will probably arrest me because I hurt the CCP's feelings by speaking the truth. My family is of Chinese discent. But there's a reason we got the 'f&*k' out of there.

        • +7

You have angered winnie the pooh. The CCP will be after you now.

For the record my grandmother is chinese. So there.

          Social credits be damned. 🤣

        • -1

Xinjiang is full of terrorist, perhaps China should have taken a leaf out from the Americans and flattened them.

          • +1

@TightAl: You don't think the American approach might actually encourage more terrorism rather than 'flattening them'? China is using barbaric methods to weaken the Muslim power in the west of the country, including brainwashing, torture and ethnic cleansing. If I were a Uyghur in Xinjiang I might be suitably miffed at the CCP to express my political position using unconventional means too.

            • @Meconium: You seem to be in support of all the terrorist attacks, that's pretty digusting.
If you were a Uyghur, you'd probably be laughing at the fake news that is MSM. Alot of armchair experts here have not the slightest clue of the truth of what's happening there, let alone will ever step foot there.

              • +1

@TightAl: I'd advise against calling people's opinions 'digusting [sic]', especially when I was responding to your absolute statement about the region being "full of terrorist [sic]" and "flattening them".

The abuse of human rights by a powerful state actor has taken place so many times throughout history, and is never acceptable. While there have always been bootlickers defending the ideology of the state and attacking the human victims, the power dynamic is obvious and the human rights violations in this case are not a matter of dispute. I'm not Uyghur and expect that you aren't either, so let's not pretend to know how they feel about being in this situation.

In any case, it's clear that your position is ideologically driven so I don't expect to change your mind. In the absence of civil discourse this discussion is over.

  • +3

    Nice deals in March,
to escape the NSW State Election.

    • make sure you pre-vote before you go away

      • +2

I was overseas when it was local elections here. Was told by the australian working at the embassy that i didnt have to vote as i was clearly out of the country.

But hey. I was already at the embassy so i voted anyway.

        • +1

yep good on you.. don't be one of those people whinging about the govt if you didn't vote

          • +1

@x x: Not going to be that guy always having something to say about the government whining but never actually voting.

  • +5

So I think I may be a bit radical, and actually talk about the flights…

As this is Scoot, is a stopover in Singapore an option? Would it add much to the flights?

    • +2

Your free thinking and out of the box ideology has no place here. 🙃

  • +31

Taiwan is an amazing holiday destination. I cannot recommend it highly enough, been there many times

    • +3

I love to hear this…I really want to visit

    • -4

While im not disputing this. All i was saying is. Is the place safe to go to? But ofcourse the faceless neggers the gutless wonders that they are cant even type up a constructive comment to say otherwise.

      • +9

If you are worrying about the Chinese invasion, the possibility is very low at this moment. We have been threatened by them for decades. The reality is it will cost them tremendously for invading us, and they have their own problems inside the wall right now. Taiwan is also one of the safest country in the world, but beware of the traffic.

        • -2

See. Was that so hard to have a constructive conversation faceless neggers?

          And thanks s9114161 for that.

        • when is the typhoon 'season' ?

      • +7

Taiwan has been under "imminent threat of invasion" for at least 3 decades since the 1990s. During this period some threats were higher, some were pure bluff. The reality is that invading Taiwan by force is extremely risky for CCP and they realistically don't gain much. Taiwan won't put up a resistance like Ukraine, but the general population will cause quite a lot of trouble. Some hot headed groups will even "temp" CCP to use force to demonstrate to the world. There will also be quite a global response; not so much justice for Taiwan, but keeping China in check.

Xi and CCP need to be quite unhinged to invade Taiwan… But that never stopped Putin for going after Ukraine.

Personally, I think invasion is only likely when there's significant civil unrest within China and CCP desperately needs something to distract the population and setup an imaginary external enemy.

        • Xi and CCP need to be quite unhinged to invade Taiwan… But that never stopped Putin for going after Ukraine.

          Exactly this.

      • +2

You were clearly not asking a question. More like some kind of know it all passive aggressive declaration.

Nice try spinning it to play the victim though.

        • -1

I wanted to know if it was safe to travel to taiwan. Sure i did not state it as people expect. Like a sentence with a question mark at the end. Lesson learnt for next time.

Passive aggresive declaration? And what do i gain from that i wonder?

Spinning playing the victim. Lolwut? Again what do i gain from that?

Again like i said. Instead of just negging a comment how about a response why one thinks they disagree. Is that too much of an ask? Judging by the negs im guessing yes.

Then again s9114161 managed to do it.

    • Awesome, any sites or itineraries that you may know of/recommend?

Keen to do a solo visit before anything major changes

      • how long are you looking to go for and if only in taipei or looking to explore other parts of taiwan?

    • +1

What do you like about it? Any recommendations? Have travelled pretty extensively around SEA but don't know anything about Taiwan.

      • +3

Taipei is an awesome city, super friendly with excellent trains and buses. Tapei 101 is worth a trip up, 101 stories and amazing views.
Taiwan has lots of great food and pretty cheap. Heaps of great other tourist places to visit and such an easy, clean fun city to travel around.
The east and west coast are so pretty to travel down and visit different smaller cities and natural attractions like Taroko Gorge. The High Speed rail is fun to travel south on. Alishan Mountain is really pretty and worth travelling to. Also if you are there during baseball season, it is huge there, so make sure you get to a game, they are really popular with the locals and exciting to watch as a visitor too.

        • +1

          Thanks for the write up!

  • +14

Flying to 🇹🇼 later today, Scoot as well, but paying through the roof for the December price :(

    • Safe trip mate, enjoy some stinky tofu! Is that an emoji or a unicode for TW?

      • Its the taiwan flag

      • +1

Emoji is just part of Unicode block. Taiwan is definitely not a waistline-friendly place.

        • +1

Just stuff your face and dont worry about it.

    • +6

Enjoy your holiday Scotty! Glad to see you flying the flag for the Republic of China 🇹🇼 that had been removed by global corporations cowardly after pressure from its neighbour, the unelected totalitarian regime 😂

    • +3

paying through the roof for the December price :(

Alright, hand in your Ozbargain License.

      wait…

  • Still 3+4 entry quarantine rule?

    • +6

No quarantine. Visitors are "advised" to stay at one place within 7 days upon arrival, but free to visit places, go to work, etc. No one checks.

      • Yeah they pretty much stopped checking way back in the 3+4 days let alone the 0+7 started back in October when my relatives went over and you no longer had to stay in the 'designated' hotels. Also even outdoor mask wearing requirement was just lifted at the beginning of this month.

  • +19

Interestingly, Taiwan actually has more "Chinese historical cultural" than mainland China in some aspects. During the Cultural Revolution and rapid induatrialistion, CCP wiped away many cultural practices that the government deemed "unsuitable for a modernising nation" (we all know what that means 😏). Taiwan did have a period of martial law after the civil war, but the government mainly cracked down on political dissent and not cultural practices. These historical, cultural, and some religious aspects are still tightly woven into the society.

    • +7

I see this touted a lot and it really needs to be stressed that this is just one of many Chinese cultures. China is a massive country with many ethnic minorities and major cultural differences between even its own Han people. Not that I'm defending the CCP, because they're doing a great job destroying everything by trying to homogenise a country full of different people (dwindling numbers in other dialects/languages spoken for example).

  • +2

    Why no Brisbane (cry)

    • OOL (Gold Coast) is the LCC international airport for Brisbane (Jetstar, Scoot, Air Asia - back from 2023).

    • +2

Because Scoot doesn't fly out of BNE.

Flown with Scoot may times by catching public transport to OOL airport from & to
      Brisbane.

      • +1

by catching public transport to OOL airport

How did you get there? Translink doesn't offer anything direct, requires a 656m walk in all the journeys I just tried. Surely there's a bus that goes to the terminal?

        • +2

There is - #760 from Varsity Lakes train station stops right in front of terminals.
Every 30min - to meet train during day. Try a different search time.

You'll probably walk further than 656m in terminals & during transfers on those flights!

          • @INFIDEL: Thanks, I tried again and it all became clear when I looked at the satellite view on the map. Translink thinks "Coolangatta airport" is at the northern tip of the terminal building, not in the middle where the bus stop is.

You'll probably walk further than 656m in terminals

At least that will be in air-conditioned comfort, and under cover! I was previously thinking I'd be dragging my luggage in the mid-day sun.

I think Brisbane airport has even longer journeys between the farthest gates.

            • +2

@Russ: Showed correct position for me - using Google Maps.
northern tip of the terminal building is where coaches (from Brisbane & coast) pick up.

I often wait on the beach for a while before my flight - a great departure lounge!

In some LCC airports, have had long walks outside in the heat. Singapore will be fine.

  • -1

CCP wiped away many cultural practices that the government deemed "unsuitable for a modernising nation"

It's a similar pattern everywhere that left wing governments get too much power. Just look at the historical revisionism occurring in all Western nations right now at the hands of 'progressives'. Despite inventing almost everything and creating the most peaceful and prosperous world humanity has ever seen, we have now been recast as the bad guys in the story…

    • +2

      doubt

      • What is it with these people and shoving their shitty unsolicited political takes in irrelevant forums? Bet they're probably one of those that always goes on about keeping 'politics' out of sports/movies/whatever all the time too.

    • +2

Despite inventing almost everything and creating the most peaceful and prosperous world humanity has ever seen

You would only believe this is you lived behind China's "great firewall". A country so "great" that it feels it has to hide the truth from its own citizens.

      • You would only believe this…

It's not what I believe, it's what the data tells us…

        • +1

Really? The data I can see, shows that China is much better known for IP theft than IP creation.

        • It's not what I believe, it's what the data tells us…

I also cherry pick data to suit my own distorted view of reality

          • @altomic:

I also cherry pick data to suit my own distorted view of reality

Well let's see this data and see where we land. This is usually when people like you disappear from the discussion…

            • @1st-Amendment: you're the one saying your "data" tells us something. the burden of proof lies with you to support your argument.

              • @altomic:

you're the one saying your "data" tells us something. the burden of proof lies with you to support your argument

Ok let's play a game where we each list invented things that benefit humans the most, one at a time and see who runs out of things first. That would be a fair way to determine who invented the most useful things don't you agree?
I'll start with the topic of this discussion which is powered flight. Powered flight was invented in the West and it benefits humanity immensely.

                Now your turn…
