How are these vs iPads for a toddler distraction device on an airplane?
I’m entirely iOS ecosystem currently. Only planned for use 3-4 times a year on plane flights or similar where distraction can’t involve playing outside etc.
I know iPads need minimum 64gb but androids are probably easily expandable I guess?

For kids, this would be a good (cheaper) alternative to iPad. Can watch YouTube, play games, etc. Screen isn’t as good though, and the processor is much slower. I’d say iPad still provides a better overall experience, but if you want to spend less, the Samsung tablet will get you by without many issues. I don’t think kids will really care or notice.

      Source: I’ve owned both tablets.

The benefit of Android is that theres a bit more flexibility. Its easier to upload videos then use an app to watch them.

Probably also easier playing videos off an external drive too.

      • +3

You can add a micro sd too which ipad doesnt support

    • +2

Honest question, why would a tablet possibly not be good for kids because its not an ipad? If the size not an issue go for it

      • iPads are really simple- hard to break anything or screw up settings.
I remember my android phone having a lot more stuff that I never took the time to figure out.

I guess it seems obvious but just wanted to check.
Also maybe the availability of toddler games is lower etc.

I mean, where is this coming from

    • +1

I’d recommend an older iPad mini, I use a mini 2 with the kids main issue with older models is lack of Apple Arcade
Note the Mini 4 is now unsupported? I think but has iOS15 I think.

In your case, stick with iOS, easier to manage and definitely better usability for kids. A lot of primary schools have iPad programs for this reason, starting in Prep. You can ask your local school about it - might save you a few hundred $ in a couple of years

      • Thank you!

I should add, we bought our eldest son a new iPad when he was in Grade 1. It's still going strong 5 years later and has had a LOT of use. I am an android person, but iPads are annoyingly good for kids and grandparents

    • Xiaomi REdmi Pad with 90hz display will kill this.

    • Point taken. Like almost all items everything is more expensive now. Those prices are all months ago.

I have altered the description which hopefully makes you happier.

That DigiDirect one was a dud, they cancelled and refunded us =(
Still kicking myself that I missed out on the Amazon/phone plan deals earlier in the year.

Don't forget when Optus had them for $150 including a 30GB/Mo data plan lol

      • and $55 cashback :)

      • With free replacement of Driving License included LOL 😂 …. Aussie customers are so forgiving to Optus .. so proud 🥹 ‘of them

      • Got the one from Optus. And it was the 4G/LTE model too.

wasn't the 6 lite a much better buy than this?

I see some behavioural and developmental problems in their future…

        • says a guy called first amendment XD but i also wonder what they are doing. as for your comment, meh when you look at the generation brought up without tablets can it get any worse? i dont think the tablets are to blame

            @juki:

meh when you look at the generation brought up without tablets can it get any worse?

Imagine living in the most peaceful and prosperous era of human history and thinking that things can't possibly get worse. The level of entitlement you need to come to the conclusion…

            • +1

@1st-Amendment: you are the one moaning about kids on tablets

I suggest you look up in a dictionary the meaning of entitlement, as it wasnt questions of rights to anything here

Unfortunately, i am not one of those argumentative types on the internet so i wont engage about human history, the definition of prosperous. so again yeah i dont think tablets are that much of a big deal and more young people arent as bad as you implied

              • @juki:

you are the one moaning about kids on tablets

Didn't moan, just commented… because you know, that's what the comments section is for…

i am not one of those argumentative types on the internet

Yet here you are. Entitled and a complete lack of self-awareness 🤣🤣🤣

I'm going to buy this tomorrow using my $150 gift code from when i bought a TV few months ago.

I bet they'll say you can't use the gift code for some reason. Don't trust Harvey Norman store.

    • +4

Even if this tablet was free, you couldn't pay me to buy from Harvey Norman. Absolute national disgrace!

      • I was editing the above message. Agreed. Was not a Good experience buying my TV from them. Sold out everywhere else so i had to.

These gift cards are a con. Harvey Norman stock is overpriced by the amount of the gifts cards anyway.

Don’t buy from Harvey Norman just for gift cards. If you can get a better deal elsewhere do that.

Also gift cards you receive are in store only amd you can't check the GC balance online. Well mine is like this.

        • As i expected. Harvey Norman said i can't use gift voucher.
Has been escalated to higher management and they're calling me tomorrow with verdict.

Harvey Norman won't miss you !

Had this from the Optus deal. I wouldn't buy it for $100. Terrible screen and performance.

    • +2

But your deal comes with a side of identity theft. So bargain. 🙃

      • And a shiny new drivers licence.

    • What was it struggling to do? At the same price point what would be better?

      • +1

Something like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/711651 would be much better, or the recent S6 Lite (2022) deal.

It is very laggy and slow, so using it for kids to watch youtube might be okay, but it is a frustrating experience for anything else.

The screen has a green tint which you can't fix by fiddling with the setting and looks awful.

        • I have seen those deals and have pondered them.
I ended up getting 2 of the optus samsung tablets for my boys. They play minecraft and youtube without issue.
Ive just downloaded the apps for them and it seemed fine while i was setting them up. Looked good but i only had an old Samsung and ipad tablet to compare to.

          • @DarwinBoy: Fair enough. for kids, def don't need anything fanciers, esp if you got them on a good deal.

  • I kick myself everyday for not finding out about that $150 optus deal when it was running. Bought a slightly slower tablet for $159 from ali months later. Ughh…
