Hey All long time user.

Thought i would share this sony xm5 deal at JB HiFi, seems too good to be true. Proabably a pricing error with their deal of the xm4 but worth a shot/try your luck. Make sure to use the discount code.
Unfortunately I bought mine full retail price :( earlier last week. So i have not tried.

  • Picked mine up as well (6 behind the counter including mine). Fk sake, I've gone over budget again. Thanks op.

  • i dont think it's an pricing error. they must not be selling well. however i'm sure jbhifi were not planning to move that many in such a short time.

    • +2

They wouldn't be as it's been hard to get any real discounts on them since they came out.

In general $400 for the xm5 and $300 for the xm4 are good prices.

  • +9

So I just went into my local JB about an hour ago (after the price rise on the website). Thankfully, they had a sale tag still present at the cabinet display for them at $389, quickly ran to woolies, got an ultimate gift card for $389 @10% off, which was $350.10 (same price as when discounted), ran back to JB and tag was still up. Got a salesperson to grab me one, price had gone back up on the PDA to $549 but they honoured their in store advertised price, lucky win!

    • +6

That's game fking around with gift cards and everything, nice job.

      • +5

yeah but i bet the absolute RUSH he got from snagging a bargain is going to keep him going till at least new years.

        • +3

There's nothing quite like the thrill of a good bargain coursing through your veins.

          • +2

@pharcyde: theozpilot will be telling the grandkids about that one time he got some 'headphones' at a 'physical store'

        • Nah I’ll be back in a deep depression later 😂

      • Thankfully woolies was at the other end of the Westfield so was just a brisk 7 or so min walk each way.

        • Good steps.
Hopefully 28 degrees approves mine, they rarely don't ;)

    • True OzBarginer! I would have just paid the $389 and been satisfied! Good on you!

    • so actually their instore price is wrong as well

      • It was at the time, of course they removed the sale tag after I bought 😂

  • noooooo gutted to miss this, I have been hanging out for a good price on this

  • anyone who picked delivery get an order update?
mine is still sitting in processing order. but at least it hasn't been cancelled yet which is a positive!
    fingers crossed.

    • +1

I ordered at around midnight, the status is "shipped" now.

      • cool. ordered around 1am, but still on processing order, maybe need to wait for stock now. but if yours has shipped means hopefully they aren't going to cancel

        • +1

just shipped, says it will be arriving tomorrow

    • Got arriving tomorrow email

  • All good. Just picked up in store. No problems. Cheers OP

dang it, impulse spent $1240 today, headphones and dual boiler where i wasn't going to spend a cent anymore…. inflation keeps rising if we all keep going like that…. we're all doomed !!!!!!!

    • The US is exporting inflation with their massive money printing in the billions. So it really doesn't matter the thousands that we are spending lol.

    • Infl? It's the big cheeses 🧀 that raise inflation not us.

  • -6

Picked mine up a few hours ago. I'm upgrading from my QC35s which I actually don't have an issue with other than the top band starting to peel in places.

Been using them for the past hour and comparing them with my QC35s. For the first 30 mins I was starting to regret my purchase - the sound was just average to me and I thought the QC35s sounded better. However I stumbled across this EQ setting on reddit: https://imgur.com/a/eAYSSVr which greatly improved the sound. (I turned the 2.5k a notch down though).

I think the QC35s are way more comfortable to wear because of the thicker/softer ear pads and larger ear cups. The XM5 feels a bit tighter and I could feel the inner wall of the ear cup touch my ears. The QC35s are also easier to adjust the band to fit your head because of the stepped notches. The XM5 has a weird stepless thing going on that looks hard to keep at a certain position.

It's still a great buy for ~$350. But if I had the choice again between the XM5 and the newer QC45s, and they were at a similar price, then I would probably lean towards the QC45s.

      • +1

Yeah I know. Can't exchange once opened though. And I'm not buying another pair!

        • one reviewer actually preferred the qc35 over the xm5/qc45 because qc35 handles wind the best (in low mode). reviewer said xm5 were a close second for handling wind.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjUuHa6i6g4

guess that only matters if you're on the e-scooter a lot or whatevs

    • +1

i am starting to regret to, maybe my expectations were too high

      • +1

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the XM5s now I've dialled the EQ. I just think I'd be happy+1 with the QC45s.

    • anyone else feeling thay way?

      • I have the xm3 and the misses just got the xm5. I tell you what, I was a little underwhelmed in comparison.
She does not know any difference though!

I will stick to my xm3s hahaha

      • I have nothing bad to say about the dual boiler though! That thing is a beast

        • +4

F* it, i just bought the qc45 at 11:55 pm also before the offer expired, so now i can use the xm5 for calls while i make my espresso with the breville dual boiler and bust out the qc45 for when i travel…..we're doomed

    • +1

Look, you still have plenty of other choices. For example, sell the xm5 for almost brand new for $350 via fb marketplace, wait for Boxing Day and see if there will be good discount on QC45. Or just keep using your qc35.

      • Code still works for QC45

      • +2

I think I'll give it a good go first.

Loving the feature where you cup your hand on the right ear and it lowers the volume so you can hear/talk

        • Can you give us an update in a couple days.

I got mine sitting here unopened cause I'm a bit worried about the ear comfort. I went into JB yesterday to try them out for a bit, stood there for like 20min with them on my head. Like you said, I also felt the inside of the headphone pressing ever so slightly against my ears so I was worried that it was gonna cause pain, in the 20min it didn't but maybe another 10 or 40min it would.. I got big'ol ears so I'm a bit apprehensive with headphones, also thought it sounded very average until I put the same EQ that you used, yup did it on the demo unit lmao.

Did put on the QC45 and it is by far the most comfortable, my ear touched nothing.

          • +5

            @buckethat: Yeah can do.
So far the XM5s haven't caused any pain or discomfort. But the difference is noticeable when I swap them to the Bose.

            Other things I noticed today:
            * XM5s surface picks up prints
            * Walking with a hoodie on is possible with the XM5s! With the QC35s it makes an unbearable scratching/swooshing sound
            * XM5s does a much better job in the wind

          • +1

@buckethat: Just my 2c having owned QC35 and now XM5; the QC's are far more comfortable. The XM5 almost feels like a light vice around my head. I've used Astro's, Triton's etc before so large/clunky headsets never bothered me, so it's not a big deal for me. I think the Audio quality/ANC is better on the XM5 so the trade off is worth it. But if comfort is big for you, go the QC45 IMO.

          • +2

            @buckethat: Update:

I wore the XM5s for a 2 hour zoom call. It became noticeably uncomfortable to me after an hour. It's the tightness more than anything.

I spend 99% of the time wearing these headphones indoors at a desk. I couldn't justify keeping a pair of new headphones when I prefer wearing my 5 year old headphones.

I sold them to a young chap who was very happy to get them.

            • +1

@rlay3: Thanks for the update mate, so it wasn't that it was hurting your ears but your noggins hurt because of the tightness? That may not be a huge issue for me.. I still have them sitting there unopened but I reckon I might give it a go and see how it is myself.

Worse comes to worse, I can do what you did, I'm sure someone will be happy to take it off my hands for $350. Thanks for the update though, shame it didnt suit you.

              • +1

@buckethat: Yeah it was more the tightness around the ears

              • @buckethat: Keep us posted please. Mine still in the shop ready for collect but already having buyers remorse

                • @MrBillions: Hey mate, not sure if you picked yours up yet.

I've played around with this over the last few days. I'm gonna keep them, I wore them for a couple hours and there was slight discomfort when I was paying attention to it but honestly not something that bothered me when I'm consuming content.

You need to EQ these for sure. Out of the box it sounded really.. muddy to me, and too much bass personally. My EQ setting is similar to the comment by jerdp below but adjusted it a bit (-2, +6, +7, +4, +4 and -2 clear bass). So far enjoying them.

Figured if I didn't want them in half a years time, I could probably flog it off for a similar price I got them for.

                  • @buckethat: I never touch EQ out of principal but testing out a few of these settings, under the custom presets. The ones above are quite different to those Reddit ones (which are very bassy). Still unsure of how clear bass affects it yet vs the eq. Worth playing around with though! You don't want the treble frequencies too high in general or they become more fatiguing.

Don't see how you can have 400hz and clear bass -2.

                    Cheers

              • @buckethat: No issues with mine, guess the clamping force could be a bit much for those with a big noggin. Not sure if you can bend them.

Probably better cheaper headphones/headsets if just want it for teams calls.

              • +1

@buckethat: Took the leap of faith since the reviews online are super divided and opened mine up 2 days after this deal. Sound needs to be tuned via app eq to bring forward clarity to the mids and highs and tone down the overpowering bass as others have stated; sound quality is vastly greater after doing so as well as turning on LDAC and it seems to be value at this price point. ANC by default has been really good in my limited usage (i didn't turn on adaptive listening) and expectingly blocks much more noise compared to my budget Srythm nc35 anc headphones. Audio feels more lively and punchy (awesome on pop genres) after setting the eq in Sony's headset app vs the default tuning of my audio technica ath-m50xbt (which doesn't have an eq tuning app).

I can feel a slight pressure point from top of the headband (earcups feel ok even with my ears partially touching the pad) when wearing them at 30-45mins intervals but not enough to cause me severe discomfort. Discomfort maybe noticeable if not playing any audio and just using solely for its ANC.

I'm no audiophile but audio quality has been really good so far in my experience and its lightness keeps it from falling off my head when i tilt down compared to my heavier audio technica headset.

                • +1

@jerdp: Yes they should be used with the app and LDAC turned on (if you have an android phone). The sound is improved and more natural than the xm4 (less over powering bass), but not heaps in it

Can't believe people are complaining for $350 - ripper price. I wouldn't pay $550. There are other alternatives if people don't like these, such as the Sennheiser momentum 4. The Sony's are pretty good overall though and work properly.

      • +2

it seems many ozb ppl felt that despite the qc45 better suited to their noggin / tastes.. they were forced by the ozb law to buy the xm5 because it's a bigger drop on the rrp? :) :p

        • +2

          Ozbargainers gonna ozbargain. 🙃

        • +1

if only bose QC45 had RRP of $550!

        • +1

I have the XM4s connected to my desktop via a Fiio BTA30 for extended daily use. Not sure if the difference is perceptible, but I have it connected using LDAC.

I figured the XM5 were the way to go if I wanted to interchange with the XM4 which will now be the backup/travel headphones.

        • +1

Yes First rule of ozbargain club

  • +2

fb marketplace flooded with this headphones “unwanted gift”

    • Effing generous lot arent they just getting given out $350 headphones.

    • More like “unwanted purchase”.

      • Business model more like it. Buy low flip for a profit.

      • More like impulsive ozbargain purchase ha.
I'm sure they'd get snapped up very quickly for $350, won't be that cheap very often.

People complaining could try other alternatives, however no one pair is perfect. The Sennheiser momentum 4 is meant to sound a bit better (better layering/instrument separation, good midbass), comfort could still be an issue and buggy software/firmware, and more expensive deals in general.

The Sony xm4 would still suit a lot of people.

  • Why is the code 92WICKEDWED10 still giving 10% off on Thursday morning?

We’re the MX5 already discounted plus another 10%

  • Mine got delivered today! Thanks op (:

  • Got it for my sister yesterday she loves it

  • If a pillow (anything other than a finger or hand) touches the earcups will this then be a touch/gesture/swipe and change the device?

i can see myself leaning to the side on the airplane seat or bed and the earcups touch the headrest and then it's playing louder or skips forward or whatever the touch controls do.

I have this happen with my cheap disposable earbuds when i look the side and it touches anything it just thinks it's a gesture/swipe or whatever … so annoying

    • +2

I tried rubbing the right ear cup (where all touch gestures activate) against a pillow and a towel and neither registers a false touch in my experience.

    • No, don't worry about that.

      • Thanks to you both

  • -1

Thinking I'll return these, if not approved will need to sell them. As a glasses wearer the tight fit and being so used to in-ear headphones (have the Jabra Elite Active T75) these just feel gigantic on my small head. Took the plunge with the OzB rush but probs not my best purchase without even trying them on….

    • +1

Always worth trying on. I don't have a huge mellon and wear glasses and find them ok. Just have to adjust them to the right spot in terms of comfort (it's a balance of clamping and not pressing on head too much, whilste being secure). Mind you my ears are smaller so sit inside the cups so quite good.

Obviuously in-ears are much smaller - shame my ears don't suit IEMs, can't get a proper seal on at least one side.

You'd be easily able to sell them for that price or a bit more, but return easy.
