Damn that IS a good price especially for the 600 kit.

at this price i wouldnt even bother with hacking together a kit with an esp module and 5v transformers.

    • My WS2812Bs literally arrived less than ten minutes ago lol

      • nice mate, the adafruit ones?

        • +1

Ordered from BTF in China about five weeks ago - not even going to bother trying to get them up for Christmas now!

          • @Moondog: still got ages till xmas - from the …10 min or so I did looking at it in passing it looks pretty straight forward to setup.

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I don't even have the tracks to put them in yet - if it was super urgent I'd get it done, but given it'll take time to order and receive the tracks, put them up, mount the lights, work out all the niggles etc - nah. They'll be up for next year. And now thanks to OP I'll have some twinklies to go with them!

          • @Moondog: If it were me, I'd put them up.. and leave them up till Easter anyway

            • @aragornelessar: Then Christmas in July, then Halloween and oh look, it's Christmas again.

      • What kind of setup you aiming for?
Rough parts list from btf ?

Been curious to setup some slightly fancier lights but never gotten off the ground with motivation:)

      • My WS2812Bs literally arrived less than ten minutes ago lol

There is nothing special in Twinkly hardware.
The magic is in software (which creates 3D map of all lights an applies various effects to it).
Is there any open source alternative for the software?

        • If for a tree, I also didn't like the way the light strips sit (assuming they are light strips, a quick Google search looked that way).

    • +1

Do you know a guide or have any tips on DIYing this? I have a few ESP32s and RPi Picos. I haven’t messed with large numbers of addressable LEDs though. The main thing I’m not sure about is how to drive them.

  • +4

Be careful - the box and description differ between RGB and RGBW. But yes.

    • +5

Yes, fell into that trap. RGB & RGBW wont sync together in a group.

      • Apparently you can use WLED to control Twinkly lights although I'm not sure what the limitations are. That might allow you to sync them as a group.

EDIT: Turns out that is not the case. Ignore.

  • Awesome

  • +1

    Any outdoor options?

    • +5

All twinkly's are outdoor - Even the controller box is waterproof

      • +1

        wow thanks

  • +1

Hmm so is the 600 rgbw or not? Box is a pic of rgbw. I thought only JB sold rgbw versions

    • description says rgb+warm

i was going to jump on it but decided i probably will end up just hacking together my own solution, probably ditch the chasing effect but retain app control as I'd rather have a brighter option.

      • Really? I couldn't find that in the description. The description and title both show RGB but bos shoes RGBw

        • +2

I think the 600 led one is actually RGB not Rgbw. The non discount price is $399, which is the RRP for the 600RGB. The 600RGBW retails for $449

  • +1

Anyone able to share please the difference between the rgb and the rgbw version? Are they worth the extra $$$?

    Thanks

    • +1

RGBW = has a dedicated warm, depends how much you value that.

      • +3

        You mean dedicated white

        • That is what they call it:
RGB Warm white 5 mm clear and diffused flat lens LED

        • It's a yellow white (like a traditional globe) opposed to a blue white (like a fluro).

    • Not sure about this one specifically but in general, it's an extra white led, which is helpful for true white and brightness

    • +1

I have the RGB version, I see the white colour as little bit blueish, as true white. But for me it's not a deal breaker.

      • +1

For a Christmas light it really doesn't matter I reckon. If you were using it as actual lighting it might be an issue.

    • The big issue is that they aren't compatible with each other, so once you have made your rgb vs rgbw decision you need to stick to it unless you want to run two separate groups anyway.
Rgb =cheaper. Rgbw = better white.

Also i read that xlight (open source software) now supports twinkly lights, no idea if that helps with the grouping different type issues. That software is a whole new level of complexity to investigate some other Christmas.

    • rgb does not have a dedicated white light. but RGBW does.

  • thanks OP. Ordered a string 400. Great price

  • was just looking for these as I already own 600s.. order another set of 600 and 2 x curtain lights. Thanks OP!

  • great price but might need a few.. Curtain is 1 metre width x 2.1 metres height

    • Pretty sure my curtain is 1.5 m wide. I have four covering 6 meters.

  • $10 delivery unless you spend $100

  • damn OOS

    • +5

Nah mate, it's Christmas, the tackier the better!

  • +2

Thanks OP, grabbed a set of 250 for the inside tree in the last deal and am pleased enough with the light show to throw money at 4 x 600 string sets for the colorbond fence next year.

  • +1

I can't go back to my cheapo lights after trying these. They're so much brighter and colourful and at these prices feel worth the cost (full RRP is a bit more of a luxury splurge). Haven't tried non-RGBW yet so let's see…

  • +7

Don't buy there guys, price match at JB..so everyone can buy

    • price matching now

    • +1

i been refreshing amazon every 15min waiting for a cheeky price match - still no love.

    • Are they price matching the 600 even though out of stock or did you get them to matcha a different one

      • +3

No luck price matching, it’s OOS at myer And they won’t price match eBay

  • +5

On Myer eBay store too in case anyone has gift cards.

    • I will be surprised that they have in stock there but not at their own website. Likely the stock level at eBay is wrong

      • got caught out once ordering via ebay myer for a philips airfryer - said it had stock but got ozbargained before ebay store could update stock.
Had bought ebay vouchers to get an extra 5% - not fussed as used it up easily the next week but still good to be aware

        • Myer seem to be stuck in 1998 when it comes to e commerce.

      • I've had my 600 LED order cancelled but the 400s and 250 have gone through…. So far….

  • A few were out of stock from myer online so went with ebay, looking forward to decorating next Christmas.

  • Thanks OP for the post. Bought 2x the 400. Wanted to get the 600 unfortunately I am a bit too late.

  • +1

Saw this too late! Bought the 250 string from the TVSN deal a little while back, and they're great. We only have a little tree so they'll do, but have been keeping an eye out for the curtain set at a deal.

  • If only they had the festoon lights!

  • Will anywhere Price Match?

  • +1

I have been thinking about getting the 600 or 2 x 400 for a while. I missed out on getting them as part of this (I meant to set up an alert, but didn't get around to it and didn't seem they were posted on here much anyway). JB wouldn't price match even with them showing in stock at Chadstone. I ended up going with 3 x 250 from Myer ebay.

I managed to get a slight discount, so if anyone really wants the 600 light string and missed out, here's a link for $289, still a long way off the $199 earlier, but can probably be eased if you have discounted gift cards and maybe use the perks? I assume it can only be used once.

  • Thanks OP. Got two 250 string sets.
Will go well with my $60 Nanoleaf bargain

  • +1

    Thanks OP,
    Got two.
Now I just need to buy a house on which I can use these. My granny flat falls flat if I try this and my landlord will kick me out.

  • They cancelled my 2x curtains from ebay :-(

  • Dont forget Cash rewards. Wasnt a huge % but better than nothing.
    Picked up 2x 250s

  • JB Price matched 250 RGB+W for $90 despite Myer being RGB

    • far out, well done! I tried earlier this arvo and it didn't work, the cashier was smart enough to see the difference between the two…

      • I gave up on them when they wouldn't match like for like. I figured it was just below what they were willing to go and they were just making up excuses.

  • Sign up to MyerONE SMS and they occasionally send free gift cards. Using a $20 one I got 250 RGB for $69.99

  • Got 600 RGBW from JB for $199.99
    210 Curtin RGBW for $99.99 x4

    • Got a receipt we might be able to try from?

    • -1

      Price match Myer~!!!

    • Hi you think its to late to call JB for price match today. Cause Myer they remove the Out Of Stock items on their website ? Juts missed the deal :(

      • Try use in store stock to price match

  • +1

Received an email that my order (from myer) has been cancelled :(

    • I’m waiting nervously to see if I get a “ready to collect” or cancellation email. It was money I didn’t really need to spend, so I will see the positive side either way, but I’ll be disappointed - oh the conflict! Wishing I had just driven down to the shopping centre.

      • I'm assuming mine will be cancelled. Pretty sure it's all store stock and it's probably all been picked from the shelf already. I'll see if anywhere else heavily discounts and try again.

      • FYI just been into Myer Southland (Melbourne) and they did have some on shelf. Picked up a 600 (definitely RGB only) just in case my click and collect does not go through.

        • I went into the CBD store and couldn't find anything at all. Not sure if it's so small it's impossible to find or they're just out. Pretty sure it had been level 5 and they were just out.

      • I picked up my Myer Chadstone click and collect, so mine went through OK. Noticed some stock on shelf. Posted quantities below.

    • Half my order cancelled also - damn, great deal too !

  • How did I miss this Noooooo!!!!

  • Use it at chinese new year in place of lantern twurling it around the dragon and pagoda then re use it at easter around eggs

  • 😩 how did I miss this deal…

  • Myer take 24hrs to update stock levels. That’s why everyone is having issues with online orders.

  • If you're in Perth, Perth City Myer has lots of Strings sets on the shelf but i think i got the last curtain sets. And yes i think they are all RGB not RGBW!

  • Order canceled.
