Update: Officeworks (does) /Kmart (almost, 2 cents off) have them at the same price
(FYI: this is the new green coloured edition of the calculator) (credit for @jv for pointing this error out)
Got pinged by the camels, and seems to be the all time low
seems like Amazon price matched, and also under-cut both The School Locker, and Officeworks…, let alone school booklist "discount prices" (e.g via Abacus Calculators, which are selling at $35.75, but they have warranty but who needs warranty on a calculator? [apart from edge cases I haven't heard of])
Apologies to those who ordered earlier (even though I don't possess the ability to predict the future lol)
This was so unexpected lol, lucky I checked my emails before shutting off my devices for the night.
too good a deal, snagged 4 for the family because these calculators almost never go on sale (future proofing)

P.S: yes I know calculator emulators exist, this calculator is intended for school use

    i love my TI 30XB

FYI: this is the new green edition of the calculator

    Solar powered?

    • Thanks for the correction, I will make the appropriate changes to the post.

      • +3

        Oh, coal powered…

        • +3

you can use whatever power source you want to power it.
(since it uses a triple-a battery to power the calculator, you could use solar power to charge some eneloops for a more greener option than buying alkaline batteries)

          • +1

@DogeConomy: My old antique Casio FX-992 with a tiny solar cell is still on its original LR44 battery from 1998. Still using it today.

Can't you get free scientific calculator apps for Android and iPhone? Even HP emulators.

    • +13

If it wasn't clear enough, the calculator is intended for school use. What are kids meant to do in exams then? Bring a smartphone? 🤣

      • Agree. Sometimes some posters here should think before replying

    • +2

Came here to say if studying Accounting.or Commerce just buy this already. It is the standard.

The ass clowns who hold up classes wanting help with their app.

      • If study accounting, commerce or finance, I highly recommend the graphics calculator line like fx9860 series.

      • +1

let me let you help me with my abacus and slide rule..

Save the environment. Get the much better FX-991ES for a bit more.

    • +1

      So true.

    • +1

It's actually a similar price. Plus it has the SOLVE button, can solve 2 linear, quadratics, conics, tabulate a function, calculus functions etc etc. Weirdly some stats functions missing but overall 991ES is superior

    • +6

      Can't be used in HSC

      • +1

Yeah, if you are studying for hsc/university you need to confirm the calculator is approved.

If you are studying hsc and need higher level functions or are going into engineering/math etc, I'd get the fx-100au. Got me through my electrical engineering degree just fine.

        • +1

Yep i have the fx-100 au.

        • My uni allows FX-991ES. I have one with an approved sticker.

    • -1

      any link to buy it?
      Thanks

  • +3

Ah the memories of the FX-82.

  • +1

Same price at Officeworks & Kmart

    • Yep and use flybuys

      • and office works has 5 year warranty if you need easy replacement, especially if used as part of school booklist.

  • Thanks OP bought 1.

  • +5

Can you still type BOOBS on this or am I too old 😂

    • +1

      80085

You can do a lot worse with time and imagination

  • wish this was what my sons school used …TI nspire cas at $240 is what his year 10 class uses ones with 3 year warranty so i guess good all the way to year 12.

    • I use the Casio Classpad Fx-CP 400 [graphing calculator] for years 10-12, it's even more expensive xd

    • What sort of teacher would make their students use a calculator, like the TI nspire cas you mention, which is banned in the HSC exam? I realise you mention Year 10, but it’s still setting them up for future chaos. Can you name the school please?

      • Banned in NSW, but not in other states like VIC for specific subjects. VCE requires a CAS calculator for Further Maths 1 and 2.

NSW is not the centre of Australia.

        • -3

Well it should be banned Australia wide as these types of calculators are easy to cheat with in high school exams.

On a different note, I recommend you see a psychologist to aid with your obvious anger management issues.

          • +2

@JeBs: Your posts read angrier than @Sleepycat3 's , to me.

Also, no calculators should be banned. If having a better calculated allows cheating to ruin the results, it's a stupid test.
On second thoughts it's an amusing obstacle, as TEE is a pretty stupid rat race anyway.

  • Students aren’t going to finish their yr 12 exams if the school let them use this instead of a CAS

  • Would buy if my school wasn't stuck under the spell of TI. I'm assuming this is somewhat equivalent to the TI 30XB?

    • schools seem to brand and model specific so that teachers only need to learn limited models and TI and casio have education support material and training for teachers. this is a good deal if you just want a calculator, but if it’s for your kids check their booklist and ask their maths teacher about brands and models the school uses or they could be on their own if they need help.

  • +2

I used the FX82 decades ago when i was at school. Nice to see they’re still going strong. My classroom even had a giant poster of one!

    • +1

I had one when I was in school as well. One of the oldest things I own and it still works well.

      • The one in my bag is about 16 yrs old and still going fine. Original battery.

You try to tell people they are ubiquitous and teachers have teaching resources (high school, TAFE/CIT and Uni) for them and they come back with an app, complaints in class there isn't instructions for their app and a tantrum at exam time when they can't use their smart phone or a non approved calculator.

I get there are other models out there but this thing is an easy and cheap SUPPORTED choice.

Sub $30 for years of use. No brainer.

    • +2

FX7000G here back in the 80s, that broke. Changed to Ti-85 in the early 90s and that still works to this day.

  • I remember paying $180 for this in 2008 as it was required for calculus

    • I think you meant the Casio Classpad 300/330? (graphing calculator)
      just a guess.

Thank you - this is the model that is on my kid's school list for next year…..not sure if it's every high school in NSW but it's certainly ours

  • I used to love the Sharp calculators from ~30 years, and I remember the DAL feature

For most scientific calculators, keying in an equation is a complicated process. But with D.A.L., a feature unique to Sharp scientific calculators, symbols and numbers can be keyed in as written.

Is this true, or just marketing guff? How do you enter equations on a Casio, for example, if you can't enter them as written?

  • It's restricting me to only allow purchase of one unit now.

    • You can try buying at officeworks if you really need to buy multiple units- they've price matched again.

  • +2

Not sure if this fits the OzBargain ethos, but if you're in the market for this type of calculator it's worth checking out your local Op Shop. Usually between $2 and $5 after year 12 exams are over and kids realise they have a perfectly good calculator on their phone.

Just a PSA that the FX82AU Plus line is nearing the end of its almost 15 year lifecycle to be replaced with the FX8200AU.

    https://casioeducation.com.au/fx-8200-au/

The whole interface is getting an overhaul; it will be helpful for everything from Year 7/8 fractions and decimals to Year 12 Stats and Vectors.

  • TI-83 is the only calculator you ever need.

    • Not if you need a calculator for the HSC

  • Can this Casio run Doom? No deal if it can't…

    god tier calculator

  • These have had an upgrade from my HS/uni days. you can buy very similar looking calculators from AliExpress for ~$10.

  • Is this caluclator CASIO FX-82AU Plus II 2nd Ed Scientific Calculator good for year 8?
Are there any others that are better for similar price or slightly more that can be purchased with the Back to school vouchers?

    • Yep, it's on the school booklist for many schools for years 7-12. I haven't tried other models of calculators so I can't speak on that matter, but in my 5 years of experience using this calculator at school, it's a pretty decent one.
