    • Are there any alternatives to Eufy?

      • +2

        Not Arlo.

They had a server incident in early Dec, that meant if you happened to be away from home at the time you were out of luck getting them working remotely again. I'd take a security problem like eufy and day over something that fundamentally fails this bad. Support was useless, you need a subscription to get even a response out of them.

Upon returning home, nothing worked to restore them to working. Combination of various forget and re-adds, and resets sorted it eventually. They have the worst sowftware…

        • True this, my arlo kept randomly failing not connecting its annoying. Usually a restart of the home base fix this but not much can be expected for security purposes. Sometimes the restart button for home base are also greyed out so you’ll have to physically switch it off/on. I got so annoyed I have a smart plug that i can just remotely on/off for it…..

      • Unifi, you pay a pretty penny for the gear and you have to hardwire but you own the gear and the video it records, no subscription bs, can disconnect it from the cloud and it’s not some dodge Chinese company.

I’m personally fine with this as I’m positioning the cameras down blind spots that we don’t use use but could be potential entry points for intruders. It’s also not practical for me to get a 5v feed out there.

If you have a comparable option I’d like to hear it.

Budget up to 1k for a 4 cam ip rated setup with either long life battery or solar powered kit.

      • Maybe look into Reolink? Not sure if they are much better but I'm not aware of any breaches

        • +8

They don't need breaching, they have CCP connection built-in (negs welcome)

          • @MKBHD: Ccp already have access to every wechat data. U should be more paranoid about federal police scanning all ur data than ccp . If u do the “right” thing u don’t have anything to worry about.

            • @Frozensage: “If u do the “right” thing u don’t have anything to worry about”
              Famous last words.

Due to all the eufy security problems (theives being able to reset the whole system, facial data being sent/kept etc). I tried to avoid Eufy to no avail.

Eziviz: Trash warranty. 1 camera malfunctioned within 12 months. Eziviz Au weren't willing to help even after complying with all their weird requests for photos and videos etc.

Reolink: Good video quality but App quite bad in relation to the other brands. Notifications were really inconsistent and slow. Being a chinese brand also questionable warranty but quite cheaper than the rest.

Everything else: Got pricy with ongoing subscription.

After wasting all that money and time, I relented and just put up an eufy.

          • +1

@xlimit: You might want to try Unifi Protect. Expensive, but no subscription and can be configured to work locally without internet to trade in convenience with better security.

Then you're starting to use their APs, then dream machines, then switches. Now you can't escape LOL

            • @xmagic: Thanks for the suggestion. Haven't looked into them before. If something goes wrong with the eufy system I just put up then I'll definitely give them a go.

            • @xmagic: You don’t have to use their stuff, but you need to know how to set up the alternatives which is why most people just buy all the kit as it seamlessly connects together and is a hell of a lot better than consumer junk.
I’ve got pfSense and HomeAssistant VMs running on a Dell 7040 Micro connected to a Cisco switch which connects to a Cloud Key G2+ and Unifi WAPs. Was thinking about setting up a Cisco WLC and getting a couple of their WAPs but the Unifi stuff works and is cheap enough.

              • @Roger Ramjet: That's what I mean - the whole setup can be quite performant and semealess.

I have a similar setup to yours mostly because I need more than what Unifi Network can give regarding routing.

          • @xlimit: U could give more data to google?

        • Reolink NVRs should work fine locally without internet if you choose so, so does many other NVR systems that uses a local station. Then you can use VPN tunnel to access your local network and get remote access to the cameras. Of course any of the "app", "notifications" won't work as they requires online services provided by the vendor, which means there's always a chance of breach no matter who is the vendor. It's always a trade for convenience with complete privacy/secrecy.

        • My friend had an absolute terrible experience with reolink, I'd recommend avoiding them

    • I have set my alerts to txt only so NO thumbnail picture sent on homebase 3. SO NO issue.
Most others are cloud base so THE WHOLE video is saved on the cloud and ther is greater potential for a hack.
Only way to have a wired system saved to a local drive BUT you will get no alerts or able to check camera from your phone.

In Ultimo, Broadway, Central alone there are 3,300 surveillance cameras. The government wants to call it safety cameras, but i call it surveillance camera. Australians are being spied on

  • +11

I have 5 Eufy cameras and couldn’t give two hoots whether a thumbnail of a person detected OUTSIDE my house is sent to me as an alert and that thumbnail could possibly be sought out by someone who gets their jollies from trawling the internet for unencrypted jpegs. It’s technically possible but highly unlikely to be found and of no consequence if it is.

As long as you don't host orgies in the backyard it should be fine I suppose. Otherwise bit of a deal breaker - or not depending on the person.

      • +6

Nah I like when people watch 👀

      • +1

pretty sure if you have orgies in the backyard your ok with an audience ..loll

    • +1

Same here, love their gear, works well, constant software updates, and just works. I’ve had others that cost the same and the software is hot garbage. I think Eufy will plug this issue as they are very good with software updates

  • Same price on SCA

  • Sorry my bad

  • is there an option not to use cloud? how can you access recordings locally?

    • +2

The whole concept of Eufy (whatever they've advertised) is that it works with your base station and works locally compared to other consumer brands that works entirely on the cloud. However things like easy App access and notifications on commercial solutions always require internet access as that's just a nature how these features have to be designed. In this process portion or all of the data collected by your camera system may be sent online. Even so if your system supports some features that requires any level of machine learning - those models are always hungery for data, and that's why those companies put clause about using your data in the terms of service (that we all know nobody reads).

As long as a system is designed in a way that major advertised features works locally, you can then block the system's access to the internet (block the bridge/host and camera if they're IP, or put the entire system into a VLAN with firewall rules blocking access everywhere), then whenever you need to access the camera system remotely, use VPN tunnel to connect to your local network, which is very secure and totally self-hosted/controlled. These techniques are quite often in commercial solutions as many of them have privacy or isolation requirements.

    • I think it's pretty stupid to design a security camera to just save locally. All the burglar has to do is break in and steal the HD which is even worse. At least on cloud, the evidence is preserved.

  • +1

People will meme security issues and take a principled stand while at the same time doing 100 other things much less secure or private.i.e. your phone in your pocket is a much bigger risk to your security and privacy

    • It's a strange stance. Who has a camera inside their house anyway? Creepy.

      • +4

Mine are all outside no idea why you want it inside

        • +1

How will you know if someone has actually entered inside your house via a blind spot?

          • @MKBHD: I always think one of the more clever break in methods is to pose as roofers or similar (any high vis and a Ute with ladders will do), then just enter via roof space.

    • Optus, Medibank to name a few…data breaches galore. Nothing is really private.

  • +1

So cloud is optional with these? Wouldn't any thieves just take the basestation if they are robbing you?

    • They can take the base station but the data is fully encrypted.
They can also take your laptop phone etc to get the data on that as well

    • U understand all these things are just a deterrent for any petty crimes right? If someone wants to rob u they will. If u r that paranoid then just stay home 24/7

      • +2

Yeah nobody will rob you if you stay home 24/7

  • +2

I am considering the two 4K camera pack with a home base 3. If I need extra cameras, may but some add-ons later (more likely 1 or 2 2k cameras) then I can use the hb 3 rather than 2.

    • yea was thinking the same, HB 3 has expandable storage options and face recognition AI, worth paying the extra and backward compatible with previous cameras, but no discount :(

      • In the other hb deal someone else said the new ai is still useless and Face ID doesn’t work well… so I’m still not sure. Was going to splash out for 1699 deal with the solar panel built in model and hb3 bundle.

Might just keep expanding on my frankensteind system of Imou, mirabella and xiaomi security for now…

      • $200 off at the moment for the 2 camera bundles, $400 off for the 4 camera bundles

        • is this thru amazon?

    • Link?

  • Thanks for sharing. I had lots of Eufy products, no subscription fees, so I love them. I don't care who is monitoring my garden and front yard for me.
