While prices have increased slightly on all SodaKing products, I still think this is pretty good value when on sale.

As pointed out by jv in previous posts, if you live in Melbourne, you can get $10 refills from Billy Bubbles, providing you have one of their cylinders, but it will cost $20 to swap over a Sodastream or SodaKing cylinder for one of theirs. It is a delivery service only for which they charge an extra $5.

Also keep in mind that, while it doesn't suit everyone (me included), there are methods available for direct connection to larger gas cylinders or for refilling these cylinders via adapters available from Kegland

    FYI:
I’ve found that these cyclometers fit in thé sodastream machines also.

    • +2

I think you mean cylinders, unless you have found some other odd use for a cyclometer. :)

    • +3

Yeah, I've been using one since my first refill since they were out of the Sodastream ones.

My local IGA does the swap fro $17.50, $2.50 cheaper than a Sodastream swap at kmart.

  • +1

If you refill your own cylinders (eg kegland approach) the Sodaking cylinders are much easier and quicker to refill than the Sodastream cylinders.

    • Yes, IIRC sodastream redesigned the connection, to make refills hard.

      • Yes the new gas cylinders have a pink top, and clip in to the machine rather than screw in. Sodastream call it a “quick connect” system, and it’s in the Terra model (which replaced the Spirit) and the Art model.

  • I haven't investigated much into this yet but I am considering investing in one of these. Has anybody done the calculations on whether these machines work out better than just buying either pepsi max or sparkling water when they're 50% off at supermarkets? Does anybody know what the breakeven points are?

    • +1

It can often be cheaper to buy soda varieties from supermarkets, but I use one of these machines to reduce waste, as well as not having to lug a bunch of heavy bottles back home.

      • thank you, will read. cheers merry xmas.

          Jeeeez. Getting in early.

    • It depends on how much soda you drink.

If you drink lots of soda, then it can be way cheaper to go the route of a big CO2 bottle instead of the little cylinders. A 6KG CO2 bottle will give you 600-700 bottles of soda, and costs around $50 to exchange/refill.

Startup costs are a bit expensive, but will pay for itself quickly if you drink a lot.

I pretty much just drink the sodastream pepsi-max cordial.
The key to saving on the store-bought pepsi is to grab the cordial when it's half price. Can get the cost down to 77 cents per 900ml bottle.
So not a massive saving, but for someone like me who got tired of carting home a dozen bottles of soda water from Aldi ever couple weeks, it's great.

I did a whole test for a month after finding a second-hand machine from an op-shop for $20 that still had an empty canister inside - refill is only $19 vs $35
Turns out the bottle lip is a special size and you need a good seal with the machine to get any gas. I paid $14 for a twin-pack from Big W.

If you just want the soda water and use some other cordial, it's about 40-50 cents per 900ml depending on the fizz.

      For soda water:

52.4 c/L for Woolworths 75c bottle with 10% insurance discount and 3% gift card discount:

35.5 c/L for Sodastream with SodaKing $17.50 swap from IGA

That is based on me getting 56 880ml fills out of a cylinder (Yeah, even though it's a litre bottle, it's only 88% full of liquid so that's how I measure it). I'm still tracking the numbers. Also 'technique' matters a lot more than you'd think. I was wasting a lot of gas by pressing the button too hard with my machine. A steady flow of gas over a longer time seems to be more economical.

This does not take into account the cost of the machine or what the break even point is on that. But there is some cost and storage requirements of buying the premade stuff and some people may have qualms about the environmental impact of all those empties.

The way I make it, it is slightly less fizzy than what you'd get out of the bottle, but still plenty enough bubbles and taste for me.

      • I had considered posting something like this as a post in it's own right, because I thought it would be useful info. But apparently I'm to be downvoted,

        • doesn't really matter, depends how often how much you go through that makes the bigger difference.
Still lasts quite a while if you aren't smashing a few every day.

I like the sodastream for convenience and rotate two canisters, better than lugging 1L bottles around not to mention the waste.

  • Has anyone tried refilling these with dry ice? Seems a lot cheaper but don't know where to buy the dry ice from.

    • How would you fit the chunks/pellets into the cylinder?

    • +1

You can do this, but it's probably easier to get a proper refilling kit and use a CO2 bottle.

    • +2

Looks like a lot of faffing about, not to mention dangerous. I wouldn't recommend it. In addition, unless you have a lot of bottles to fill, dry ice only lasts a day at best (you need around -70c and freezers are maybe -20c at best), so any excess would be wasted.

    • Dry ice comes with your Lite N Easy order.

  • Usually reduced to $12 @ 40% off fairly regularly, but not a bad deal if you need one.

  • Recently been down this path researching options. For convenience a bench top soda maker makes practical sense, but not economic. As I was after a smarter DIY 'Ozbargain' approach, the Kegland soda kit ticked my boxes. Was hoping for a Boxing Day special or coupon to get one:

    • Wow, artisanal soda water the way gramps made it :)

  • Can you swap Sodastream gas bottles for sodaking ones at spotlight?

    • +1

      Unfortunately not.

      • Sad. Thanks :)

  • Cost to produce 1000 litres of soda water based on manufacturer RRP and usage.
    (Excludes shipping or transportation).

    Coles 500 x 2L PET bottles = $550 (please recycle).
    Sodastream Terra ($92) + 15 x 750g refills ($35) + 1000L tap water ($3) = $551
    Kegland DIY kit ($132) + 1.5 x 2.6kg refills ($20) + 1000L tap water ($3) = $363

    • +1

Your maths does not seem to add up here…

I'm seeing Coles soda water at about 60c/L, so pricing is pretty close there.

      But 92+(15x35)+3 = 92+525+3 = $620

      And 132+(1.5x20)+3 = $165

The kegland seems like even more amazing value based on that. Have I missed something in there?

      • +1

None of that really matters for casual users that don't go through much or use regularly.

Also I only refill the sodaking while they are $12-14 at spotlight (have two on rotation).

Bench mounted looks good though, takes much more space overall and can't install if renting etc. Special refills prob more inconvenient if you have to go to a homebrew shop.

      • +3

My calculator had a dreadful hangover Boxing Day. I need to drink more soda water…

        • Sounds like a good setup man
One step Away from home brew

  • Possible mistake by staff but I got my spare cylinder for the price of the refill. They did a double check and that's what came up at the register. Not complaining

    • Did they scan the cylinder or the box? I think the box has a different barcode to the cylinder.

      • Don't know - was at the checkout counter and the guy went to another spot where all the cylinders were. Conferred with someone who looked more senior. Came back and said it was 14 bucks. Maybe they didn't have any new boxed ones left to sell ??

Also bought two classic soda king bottles that are discounted ($11.20). The Moderna bottles are on sale as well. Twin pack for $11.20. No run around at the store.

        • The box scans up at full price and the cylinder scans as refill price. Sounds very much that, as you said, they were out of stock of the boxed ones if you received an unboxed cylinder.

          • @wombat1955: They probably didn't realise you have to hand in the empty one. The reverse situation has happened before, where they are out of refills but won't sell you or open a boxedc one as a refill. Always a cluster.

    • +1

Those guys never know what the go is with the sodaking refills ha.

      • Agreed. Last time I was there, I was bounced around the store, like a pinball machine. 5 staff, no idea

  • Hmm. Got 2 cylinders today, and they’re both giving issues. First time I’ve ever had problems.

I have the electronic 3 buttons-on-top model. I can hear it’s working hard trying to get gas out, but nothing comes. Tried 4 different bottles, 2 cylinders.
The I rock the bottle a bit during fill, and I can manage to get gas to release. But WHOA, one single pump (2-3sec), and it’s trying to entirely overflow water everywhere.

Cylinders overfilled/over pressured? I’ll weigh them
