is giftcards the new crypto ? so many gift cards sales now … have bought so many

    • +18

Yes, start your own exchange, make billions, declare bankruptcy. Everybody wins.

    • +17

So many people forget to use them, so it's actually free money for a certain percentage.

      They should never expire.

      • +15

I thought i never forget them. Went through my email and systematically checked balances then added and deleted the emails. Found 2x$30

        • +2

Yeah, I forgot about a Google Play $50 card.

I forgot about $300 David Jones, I emailed them and they told me to just head into the Service Desk. I think some businesses are good about it, others probably not.

New version of finding unexpected money in old clothes/cars/pillows, in the digital time :)

        • How much time you wasted? Was it worth it?

          • @sqheaven: I did it when i had little else i cbf doing. Its a minute each gc. Yes it was worth it. I only have amazon and eBay which are very easy balances to check

            • @justtoreply: Lucky you. Spare a thought to people who have Bunnings gift cards!!

          • +1

@sqheaven: I just did the same.. spent 5+ hrs digging through my emails, sorting stuff, and discovered $70 unused GCs. 10/10 would do it again just for the euphoria.

      • +3

Even just the leftover 50c from not using whole card is the other factor as to why the retailers are laughing.

    • Always was. Always will be.

  • Once swapped to Subway, can it be used to pay in store?

    • +3

You could use Restaurant Choice eGift cards at 10% off to use in Subway, but that way you can also use it at other restaurants/fast food places. You just add it to your mobile wallet and pay via card as you would normal.

      • also to buy tickets to theme parks and accommodation at hotel, motels and resorts

        • Depends on the theme park, worked at Luna Park Sydney…. Didn’t work at Movie World.

          • +1

@JordanM: good to know… just tap that baby and hope for the best

    • Yes it can

  • +1

If only this included Amazon… ebay giftcard terms are weird.

    • +8

is not weird just inconvenient as you can't store them as an account balance

      • Does it mean that if you use a $100 giftcard on a $90 purchase, the balance of $10 is forfeited?

        • +7

no it stays as a $10 gift card when you purchase something next time

with amazon you can type in the voucher and add to the balance with every gift card

with ebay you need to enter each card and whatever you don't use you can use it in the next purchase. So if you have 4x$50 ebay gift card and the purchase is $190… you need to enter the 4 gift cards one by one. next time when you buy something, it will have $10 on the gift card left

      • does this mean you can use them across accounts?

        • +4

my understanding is once you have applied them in one account it would be deemed as used for gift card balance purposes and you cannot use them in a different account

so lets say you bought a $100 card and you only used $90 in account A… $10 is waiting for you to use next time in account A

If you tried to use the same ebay gift card in another account lets say account B for that $10, it'll say it's been used

So whatever gift cards you used or partly used would stay in the same account

        • +5

No, once you use a gift card on eBay the balance is tied to that account.

          • @JHoliday: which is pretty similar to Amazon, once you load it to an account, you can't then decide to use "left over funds" via another account

            • @ilikedeals: theres isn't any left over funds though. You just have one balance for all the loaded gift cards and deduct from that as you go…
Whereas Ebay has left over funds from the gift card, anything over that you will need to add additional cards, which is a little annoying since you have to keep track of how many cards evt you have.
              Its a matter of convenience.

            • @ilikedeals: not similar

one is you can load and forget it about it

the other is you must use as many as the purchase is for and any left over need to use next time

      • The remaining will store under "gift cards, vouchers, coupons", which is only one click's effort to use as your payment

        • yeah i know that?

          • @Poor Ass: Then what's the inconvenience?

            • +2

@gosund: The fact that you need to store gift cards either digital or physical and add multiple gift cards for certain purchases instead of adding loading on the account as a credit like Amazon or like Uber

If it was like an one off $500 or $1000 yeah that's good but with all these shopback and cash rewards deals going on for $30 bucks it's quite a pain

              • @Poor Ass: I see what you mean. You hate to see a pile of small amount gift cards staying there instead of one balance number for use like at amazon. I don't mind that so I didn't think it's something inconvenient.

                • @gosund: Nah it's not that.. the small amounts are all good with me as it stays in the account

It's the fact that you can't load everything on and know what balance you have to spend and you need to apply a gift card one by one. If you store them good and know where all your cards are at before you use them all good but these gift card companies thrive on people losing their cards

                  • @Poor Ass: Now I'm confused :(

If you got a gift card, just add it to your account before you forget where you put them. Once I applied the codes on ebay, the gift cards will stay there with the balance shown, until the balance is all used up. That said, I've never used more than 5 cards at once so I can't tell if there's a limit on how many gift cards can be stored. Maybe that's the problem?

                    • @gosund: That's the thing you have to make a purchase so you can use / store left over credit of a gift card

There's no area that you can load up your account with gift cards without spending

                    • @gosund: @gosund how do you add ebay gift cards to your account without making a purchase?
This is the number one complaint that I and many others have for ebay gift cards. Have to keep track of them all in a spreadsheet or somewhere to avoid wasting any.
If you know of a way to add gift cards immediately to my account without purchasing anything, you will be the most popular person in the history of ozbargain

                      • @Shaneeo: Errr…… I didn't realize this is an issue until today tbh.

I always apply all the cards on hand when I'm on the checkout page regardless of how much I need to pay, meaning I would key in let's say $500 worth of cards into my ebay even for a $0.5 purchase. The remaining balance won't go anywhere so why not.

But again as I said, I've never used/applied more than 5 cards at once so I don't know whether there's a quantity limit. But judging by you guys' reaction, there must be a quantity limit for doing so, otherwise, I can't understand what's the issue here.

                        • @gosund: The issue is you can't just add a ebay gift card to your account without a purchase, whereas with amazon you can store all your gift cards to your account anytime like a e-wallet.

                          • @windrc: Thanks that is helpful to know that you can actually add all the cards at the next purchase, not just enough to cover the purchase value.

                            2 issues remain however
                            1. Cannot add gift cards to account without making a purchase.
                            2. Cannot check gift card balance/s without pretending to purchase something and going to checkout/payment screen

                            • @Shaneeo: Pick whatever item on the page, go click buy it now, and that's it. All the info you need is there, with only 2 clicks. Then close the page. Ok, that's 3 clicks now.

We ozbargainers would do things much more complicated than that to get a deal, would't we?

  • This is huge honestly, we'll see if I get mine

Really good for eBay, haven’t seen 10% for a long time. Bought $500 thanks

    • Is r that you can only use one voucher / coupon / gift card for one transaction? Means if you have a couple code you can’t use the gift card?

  • Can you use these for discounts on ebay and combine with other codes (monthly ebay plus, promos etc)? i couldn’t find anything clearly.

    • Yes, I have done this many times before unless policies have been changed very recently.

      • +1

Make sure you swap the amount you need otherwise the entire eBay GC will be locked to that eBay account.

    • yes, you can use up to 8 giftcard/codes total in the one transaction

  • +1

Bugger. Just bought $900 of ebay gift cards for a purchase yesterday at 3% off.

    • yep, could have used this for my ebay purchase of an aircon earlier in the week, only had similar % off, but there was a $120 ebay voucher, and now the item has jumped in price….so….same, same

    • Same 1100$ at 3% 😅 but that’s always gonna happen I guess.but i was happy as the bid ended around 2am and no once did any bidding. Plus got some extra genuine accessories with the purchase so it was a win win situation.

  • 10% off ebay is a great deal.

  • +6

@franco cozzo can you please call giftz.com.au and confirm legitimacy of this deal?

  • Thank you for the Post…Just bought Tamron 20-40 lens from eBay using this gift card and SNSDEC. Was concerned at first but was able to swap with eBay gift card in a seconds. Very easy.

Really nice deals. Thanks. Just bought $500. Sad I just spent $1500 for a tv recently.

  • Any expiry date on this card for ebay?

  • +12

Not sure if this was a one-off or a mistake in processing but I copped a cash advance fee and interest on my CBA CC a couple of weeks ago purchasing via giftz.

The Tx is done by ausgiftcards milsons point, evidence here:
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/77537/100679/img_20221…

Not sure if @WookieMonster or @AustinBlack know why this happened but I'm certainly hesitant about buying again.

My bank was nice enough to reverse the charges out of goodwill. But they said this kind of charge is normal for purchasing gift cards and she likened it to lottery purchases… Idk wtf to think any more!

I almost always buy gift cards on my CC and this had not happened even once before.

      • Do not use it. Different banks treat it differently. There is not a univeral rule.

        • +1

          Do not use what?

I've used the exact same CC for years buying gift cards and this NEVER happened before.

          • +2

@nismo: It is the merchant that matters, not the actual thing.

            • +3

@Neoika: Yes. This is my point and reason for warning on this deal.

Black Hawk Network, trading as giftz have caused this charge by the transaction type they used.

I don't know if it's how they do things now but a previous purchase from them had no such fees 🤷‍♂️

              • +4

                @nismo: good to know man

I kind of new something sus was going on as I tried a prepaid visa card and it would reject it usually buying from cashrewards or shopback no issues

perhaps what I recommend is to disable your cash advance feature on the cc before buying, that way it would reject and no proceed.

no one should really enable their cash advance feature on their credit card any way

                • @Poor Ass: no ozbargainer should enable cash advance :)

                  • @hughes: I never actually enabled it, so must be on by default. Will be changing that though.

OK, update: So ATM Cash advances was blocked but Gambling Payments was not blocked, but I've blocked them now.

                    • +1

@nismo: well I guess buying gift cards is a form of gambling as you might lose all your money

    • can anybody comment on this please? thinking to ANZ black

    • Can someone else previously dealing with giftz confirm this? 10% off is nice but won't risk cash advance for it

      • I purchased last time and paid with my Citi Rewards card. All went through fine, no fees.

Seems like CBA is the one to avoid.

    • +4

We have escalated this to our payment gateway provider as we do not believe that gift cards should be treated like a lottery purchase and we are not sure why CBA have suddenly started to do this. Unfortunately we're not sure if the issue has been rectified as our ticket is doing the rounds with people being on leave. As soon as I know it's been fixed for sure I will let you know.

      • are you gonna refund everyone's cash advance fee?

        • It is not us that is charging these fees, it is the bank. We are however requesting they review fees that have been charged as part of the incident we have raised but this will be entirely up to the bank to handle.

          • @AustinBlack: so all of them are charging cash advance fees??

            • @Poor Ass: No, we have been made aware CBA are but it's not even all the time. It is really weird.

              • @AustinBlack: are you from Blackhawkers?

                • @Poor Ass: Yes I work for the Giftz.com.au website which is owned by Blackhawk Network

                  • +4

@AustinBlack: could ya make a recommendation to headquarters to make all the cards be able to check balance in one place kind of like https://myprepaidcentre.com.au/sign-in but in a App and include other cards like VisaOne, Swap Cards…

The solving puzzle + entering email code is very annoying

probably not your area but just want to put it out there

                    • @Poor Ass: I 100% agree, one place would be awesome! I have already suggested this and will keep raising it.

Yeah puzzles are a tad tedious but I think it's a fraud protection thing :/

                      • @AustinBlack: I don't mind the logging in or puzzle it's the code from email that's annoying

APP would be easy…. the My Prepaid Centre app now just out right sucks… you use once to add to wallet and never use it again

                        • +1

@Poor Ass: Yeah I agree, the app should be like the website. I will raise that as well!

              • @AustinBlack: I should add, I am not sure if any other bank is. I am with Westpac and I have never been charged. I think someone below said HSBC was ok too.

                • +1

@AustinBlack: My Westpac CC has never been charged a cash advance fee when purchasing from Giftz.com.au either.

It sounds like CBA has decided to include the purchase of gift cards as a cash-equivalent transaction (based off a previous comment) and they are looking at the merchant information provided to help determine whether a transaction should be considered a cash-equivalent transaction and therefore attract a cash advance fee, but that's my two cents… What do I know!

Whether you should count the purchase of single-load gift cards as a cash-equivalent transaction is an interesting debate, because you cannot (easily) obtain cash from gift cards, but then you are told by many gift card issuers to treat it like cash…

                  • +2

@WookieMonster: We have checked our MCC to make sure we are in the correct one and we've been told we are, it feels like this only just started to happen too which is so odd!

                    • @AustinBlack: Oh, I was thinking more along the lines of the merchant name or the transaction description. Both of them contain gift cards in them (at least for me when I look at my Westpac CC), so CBA could be flagging the transactions based off that. To be fair, even if you get the transaction descriptions changed to something less obvious (e.g. GIFTZ.COM.AU MILSONS POINT), your payment gateway will probably be forever marked at CBA as one that does cash-equivalent transactions.

However, I find it strange that CBA apparently flag some transactions and don't flag others. Maybe there's a threshold before it gets flagged or something?

                      • +1

@WookieMonster: I am wondering if it is when people have gambling blocks on… I didn't actually know that was a thing until I read it recently!

    • I just used my HSBC CC to purchase a $300 gift card and there was no cash advance fee. It appears on my statement as "GIFTCARD SVC BLACKHAWK MILSONS POIN 036".

      • +1

From memory: with CBA the charge was added +-3 days after the transaction, definitely not straight away. So there was no way to know right after the transaction.
Just saying so you wouldn't make the conclusion now and never look back.

    • +2

We have escalated this to our payment gateway provider as we do not believe that gift cards should be treated like a lottery purchase and we are not sure why CBA have suddenly started to do this. Unfortunately we're not sure if the issue has been rectified as our ticket is doing the rounds with people being on leave. As soon as I know it's been fixed for sure I will let you know.

    • Same, CBA charged cash advance fees and interest. I've both gambling and cash advance disabled on my credit card setting and I pointed that out to CBA to get the fee/interest reversed. I would personally use debit card for giftz.com.au to avoid dealing with banks.
