Who wouldn’t want to sign up with instant classics like this https://mubi.com/films/the-balcony-movie

"This film is not currently playing on MUBI, but many other great films are. See what’s NOW SHOWING >"

    • I thought it is a cliche term for the kind of movies you watch while sitting on your balcony.

    • +2

Honestly seems like a great film. Connecting with humanity to find beauty in an otherwise mundane environment is right up my alley. Very humanistic.

      Great recommendation, PainToad!

    • +1

Not sure how interesting. Russian audiences would drop off.

      • Is it a reference to Russia vs the more civilised world or just the Russia vs Poland thing or something else?

        • +3

People who are critical of Putin tend to seem to be careless on balconies.

    • +1

It’s actually a great movie, saw it at MIFF a few months ago.

OP you're killing me. WHAT WAS THE MOVIE ???

    • -1

Judging by the pretentious art house feel of this service, I’m guessing one of these https://youtu.be/KVxHWEYdRi0

      • +6

There is plenty of arthouse and experimental stuff on there, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there's also a heap of great mainstream films.

        • And it’s 1 single dollar to try

        • Be real, arthouse films are for people who are insecure about their lack of intellectual ability/intrests.
At most, cinematic critique peaks somewhere around juxtaposition and intersectionality of the phantom mence, waterloo and internet memes.

Id pay $1 to see a Hans Moleman Productions original. Man getting hit by football is a classic!

        • +1

          Boo-urn!

        • My favourites were always
          * Smoke Yourself Thin
          * Get Confident, Stupid!
          * Firecrackers: the Silent Killer

      • +15

Are you using 'pretentious' as a synonym for 'stuff I don't understand or connect with'?

        • +7

Sure seems like it. A lot of the movies even need English subtitles. The horror.

Is there a Marvel movie we can recommend to cheer up PainToad?

          • +2

@Randolph Duke: Whenever I'm feeling vindicated by the 'pretentious' crowd, I like to throw on Spider-Man 3 and pretend the symbiote is a metaphor for art. There's no evidence of this being the case, but it makes me feel better if I can demonise those who differ from me!

Then I get overwhelmed by self-hatred for applying a metaphor to a movie and have to binge The Big Bang Theory to cheer myself up again.

          • @Randolph Duke:

Is there a Marvel movie we can recommend to cheer up PainToad?

There's nothing more pretentious than Marvel movies!

          • @Randolph Duke: Marvel? Talk about a sharp U-Turn.

        • Oh please, there's very good reason for them to be called pretentious. "stuff I don't understand or connect with" applies to them as well, look at their general attitude towards the majority of blockbusters which many people connect with.

    • That's why he said "suscription" for the suspense!

It's the only place with this Nick Cave film, wasn't going to subscribe otherwise.

    I saw only one movie.

Yeah but how many mubis did you see?

Drive my car - Hamaguchi Ryūsuke. 15 movies last year, more series

      • +4

        Those aren't mubis

That's currently on SBS On Demand for anyone wanting to watch it.

        • "Content may be unavailable in your location.
Most of our content is only available to stream within Australia due to publishing rights."

          • @VictorVE:

Content may be unavailable in your location…

I pushed play on it right now, and it played. So it is available.

Check you don't have a VPN on.

Watching anything on SBS on demand is a pain and disservice to the film.

It's not the best, but it's an improvement over when iView first started. That was like an N64 game over RF cables on a busted TV.

        • +3

Watching anything on SBS on demand is a pain and disservice to the film. Such poor compression and a max of 720 makes films look like the pirated movies people would pass around on our government-supplied school laptops in 2009

          • @Ninternet: Oh man I thought it was just me. It's unwatchable.

            • +2

@Stevesie76: Recently watched Our Little Sister and The Truth (both films by Hirokazu Kore-eda) on there. I have seen 7 of his other films on Blu Ray and one in cinema and I know he puts a lot of care into capturing certain elements of nature.

There's a scene in Our Little Sister where the protagonist is on a bike that is riding between two rows of cherry blossom trees that ends up becoming so pixelated that it put strain on my eyes rather than opening them to the beauty on display. I ended up buying the blu ray just to make up for that viewing on SBS.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is worth signing up for alone.

  • Subscribing from the page offering the deal in-app ended up charging me full price for one month instead.

    • "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later" uhmmm

    • I just subscribed, I already had an account, without a problem for three months.

      • Did you use a different email address then pause existing sub?

        • Same email

    • Yes - Mubi are notorious for charging even after cancelling the subscription. I've had to deal with them several times. Highly recommend the movie The Square! One of the best scenes in a movie I've ever experienced!

  • +4

Subscribing for Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Such wonderful movies.

    • Of course they're on here after I ordered the Criterion versions for $80

Actually turns out they're not. Why is Mubi so difficult to navigate and understand?

  • Mubies

  • According to letterboxd I have 22 movies on my watchlist that are streaming on mubi. Last year I managed to watch at least 2-3 movies during the trial.. might as well do it again!

    • How do you know what's streaming at any one time without getting lucky and seeing it listed in a featured category??

      • I think it might be a letterboxd pro feature to filter based on this. You set your streaming services in the advanced settings though.

      • Oh maybe I misunderstood your point.. I'm using another service called letterboxd to track my movie watching and it has an integration with justwatch so it knows which streaming services have each movie

        • That checks out. I only have the basic Letterboxd. Mubi itself is confusing from my perspective. Unless I'm just not seeing something

Let's apreciate the OP's idea of linking to https://mubi.com/films/deal instead of the home page.

  • Does this deal stack with referral?

      I dont know

I wouldnt waste my dollar on these low budget production movie.

    • +4

That's okay, art is hard to understand. That's why we have the NRL

  • Can you download these, or only stream?

    • You can download on mobile only, and the film will become available after it leaves the rotation of featured films (around 30 days if you download it on day 1)

  • +1

Love classic films international cinema and indie films. Very good source if you are right into your film

  • +2

Have had Mubi sub for 3 years now and it's honestly far more enjoyable than Netflix if you're into international and art films. The curation is great and there's always a spotlight director/subject on rotation. I really enjoyed their recent spotlight on 20th century Hungarian animation.

If you have a browser-based VPN (I use the one that comes with Opera) you can also switch to a US IP to load what would usually be an unavailable movie, and then turn it off to get full speed again, and they won't deauth the session, so you can enjoy a pretty large library of curated films.

$1 for three months is a steal!

  • +1

Way overpriced, I wouldn't pay a cent more, than 99c.

  • these are the types of films id watch at home alone and playing w myself

    • +1

      You typed it out loud.
