Bloody good price. I would too get one at this price but all tv and devices that need it have already got one of these or a fire stick 4k max hahaha (bloody ozbargain)

    • +1

What do you prefer - the Chromecast or the Firestick 4k Max?

      • +4

Having owned both I prefer the Chromecast. Amazon's home UI is more bloated with ads and their settings are a little less intuitive. However, because my house is hooked up to Alexa, I stuck with the fire stick

        • I recently chose the 4K firestick for my FiL as it looked like the remote would be easier for him to grasp. Figuratively and literally. And black hides the grime better.

He seems OK with it. I suspect he just leaves it focussed on Paramount for the soccer.

        • -1

firestick you can sideload Apk and install almost whatever you like

you can also change the loader so you won't be inundated with ads in home menu

and you can remap buttons to different apps (not straightforward)

          • @justaddwater: Any hacks for 2k output? I got a 4k fire stick and plugged it into a 2k monitor, thinking it would be fine. But at the time (about a year ago) I discovered it only does up to 1080p, and then 4k, and won't do 2k. Quite annoying as I couldn't even set it to 4k and have the monitor downscale.

            • @salem: no idea, i have 4k tv….

never tried it on a monitor, although a tv or monitor should work

              • @justaddwater: Ah yes I should have been more clear. It's working fine at 1080p plugged into my 2k monitor. But I can't get it to do 2k or 4k while plugged into it.

          • +1

@justaddwater: Oh I thought you're able to sideload APKs to Chromecast too?

      • +16

i prefer the chromecast mainly because my house is jam packed with google compatible devices (lights, rgbw controllers, tv/speakers, sensors etc)
ui cleaner too, amazon one always seem so busy and shows stuff not relevant, like

Firestick: hey heres this movie you might be interested in!
me: oh cool - click in
Firestick: haha made you look - it's available to buy/rent though :)

      • I have both. The overall experience is similar. The Firestick has a tool in the audio menu to adjust the Audio/Video Sync which I find very useful for my Bluetooth headphones as they have a minor audio delay latency issue.

      • I would assume that Google Play Store will have more apps available than Amazon app store. Can someone confirm?

  • +17

If I didn't already have one for all 4 of my TVs at home, I'd get another.

    Time to buy another TV

    • +5

Wouldn't know how to watch it… I already have one TV for each of my eyes 🤓

      • +6

put a pair of specs on and you can have 2 more TVs

        • Calling someone 4 eyes because they wear glasses is so juvenile. I love it.

        • +1

          You mean, another pair?

  • +2

Is it worth it if already have smart tv ?

    • +2

Depends if your existing smart tv has a nice fast interface, a nice remote and a good casting solution (preferably Chromecast).

    • +6

After a year or two if the smart TV is no longer getting updates from the manufacturer, then yes definitely. In fact for some new smart TVs yes anyway ( looking at you, hisense).

And if you want more than streaming apps, ATV or Shield.

    • +4

Yes. My 4 TVs are all different brands and are all 'Smart'. 1 x Sony, 1x Philips, 1x Samsung, 1x Hyundai. I also had 1x Hisense that I've recently replaced. In ALL of them I have defaulted to using Google TV via the Chromecast.
It's noticeably faster, has a better time loading apps, works brilliantly with the Google TV remote (which is infinitely better than all my other remotes).

    • i have a samsung the frame, and much prefer to use google tv - it just works faster, better, some apps have extra settings than in the samsung…it's worth it IMHO

  • Pretty sure this is the cheapest it's ever been.

It was $58 before or cheaper on other posts.

    • Chromecast with Google TV 4K $79 ($69 with Perks)

      • Updated link

    • +1

Its cheapest in Amazon AU, and might get even cheaper factoring discounted GC

    • +2

      Mydeal

      🤢

  • +2

    Google products sold by Amazon!
When I bought my Google Chromecast TV several months ago there was only Fire Stick TV available on Amazon

    • The 4K firestick is still $99! I thought Amazon would have matched on their own website!
The firestick was $59 delivered through Prime on the Black Friday sales.

  • +1

Thoughts on this for bringing away when travelling? I was using an Apple TV 4k but it's a bit big

    • +4

Yeah, I've done it lots. Provided you can access an HDMI port on the TV, it's the best way to access and stream to your hotel TV set.
Depending on the hotel though, it might be becoming a bit obsolete since many hotels now have inbuilt chromecast capabilities on their TVs

      • +1

But then wouldn’t you have to sign in on the holiday rental/ motels/hotel’s app? This way you are all set

      • +2

Yeah awesome, I got a GL.iNet Beryl router ready to go so i think this will be a good pairing.

    • +1

as long as you can access the hdmi and a power slot, yea sure.

some hotels /motels are absolutely filthy behind the tv..so id rather just watch on my ipad or phone…
some also lockdown their tv ports so cables cant be easily removed/ports blocked.

      • Additionally, some hotels have captive/welcome portals on their networks, which means you won't be able to join this to their WiFi.

        • +1

I ran into this at a Hotel this week. This device can actually join captive portals.. it has a web browser to sign in, however there was no way to tick the checkbox to accept the agreement. I managed to share wifi via my pixel phone though which allows you to connect to hotel wifi on phone, then share it via hotspot (disabled mobile data just in case). You could also use one of those travel wifi router things.

    • +1

Just back from a short trip where I did this. No dramas.

    • Thanks guys, got JB to price match via their online chat. with no issues and will pick it up soon

      • +1

Good on you for keeping the $$ going to an Aussie business.

      • +1

JB actually matched $65? The display price is $75 with $10 discount.

    • +1

I've got a backpack which has a GL.iNet router, Chromecast and power board. Chromecast connets only to GL.iNet router so no real setup required other than connecting the GL.iNet router up as you normally do anyways. Works with captive portals.

  • +1

I have a vodafone tv box, is it worth an upgrade?

    • +4

A bit faster overall, the remote might be a downgrade. No built in tuner. More up to date software.

    • +1

if it still works, and you dont care about 4k, then no.

if the remote didnt die on my voda tv i would happily still be using it.

      • +1

        VTV does 4k.

        • dang TIL - still sad my remote died and it didnt support google's app control after the last update - just kept saying incompatible.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Have you tried the Google home app? It automatically presents an option for a remote when you select VTV, and I am certain that it works properly. I can double check though.

            • @sid4frnds: Yes this was with the google home app, for a while it was working great then one day it gave an incompatible error, could only use it for on/off.

I had since replaced it with chromecast google tv 4k so all is well… but still.

    • +2

If your VTV is working fine, then no need to upgrade. I have got both and still prefer VTV because of a decent size remote and TV tuner. Also, the home page on VTV can be customised to only show app tiles, so a much cleaner interface. There is an option in the Chromecast to do the same (remove recommendations) but that also disables the voice search.

  • +1

Is it possible to add apps and steam from phone ?

    Yes 👍

    • +3

It has native google play store
and can also sideload app (apk)

Its a chromecast so it can stream from phone

  • I have an old android tv box which I use with kodi to play media from my nas. It works but struggles with higher bitrate files (?)
Can you install kodi on this w/o too many hacks? And is it more powerful than an external box w/ 4g ram?

I store it all on nas so I won't need space. I don't use YT or netflix

    • Kodi is simple as to install. Simply search for the app from the main menu, install Kodi and you're away. In relation to whether this device is more powerful than an external box, I'm not sure.

I'm also not sure how you would go about streaming from your NAS to the Chromecast, but I assume that's what Kodi is for?

      • Well I'm not sure about the last part, because the old Chromecast couldn't do NAS stuff.

In the android tv box I use Kodi and add my nas via wifi/lan as an ip address w/ login.

The original Chromecast couldn't do kodi, and couldn't connect to lan afaik?

        • I use Kodi but I have no idea what NAS is. It works OK, not the fastest depending on how much you got to set up. My widgets and stuff take 20ish seconds to load

          • @MeesusEff: Nas as in network drive. I have all my files stored there and I also have any media downloaded there and I don't stream.
Actually I have heard kodi can be used for streaming but I've never set it up, I tend to dl stuff completely.

            • @furyou: oh if you know how to set it up already then it should be fine, i just have the normal ccwgtv so i dunno if this 4k has more RAM. its a little slow to start but it ll still work. My husband used to be a serial downloader and since i set up Kodi and Real Debrid hes stopped downloading so much crap. Bonus is that we dont need to keep getting hard drives for movies we barely watch haha. Around $50 a year for Real Debrid, but so worth it if you dont need other streaming services and VPN.

Theres also an option where you can put in your torrents in the RD website and it downloads it for you so you can watch it on Kodi I guess. But I failed to set it up, couldnt understand the instructions haha

    • +1

The name of this device is misleading. It's actually an Android TV (now called Google TV) device.

You can assume it's fairly equivalent in functional capability to a mid-range Android TV device and you won't be far off, so not as good as a Shield TV but better than a Xiaomi Mi Box.

I run KODI on it (mostly as a TVHeadend client) and it works just fine.

      • I wouldn't spend on a shield, my alternative would be a no brand one from Ali.

They use these weird chipsets that I really can't find much info one so I don't know whether any more capable than my probably five-year-old box. I mean they're all still Cortex-A53 cores, and Mali-450 has been around almost a decade?

  • +13

makes me laugh when people base their tv purchase on its smart features. just buy one of these.

    • -8

Agree, why would you buy this if you have smart tv

      • +2

Some tv I believe are not as snappy

      • +2

Lots of TVs UI either suck, are slow, full of ads. Some also have poor security so connecting it to the internet means someone can hack into it and spy on you with the mic or even camera if it has it.

Some TVs connected to the internet also track everything you watch on the screen. Even if you're displaying it locally from a direct cable.

I would not connect my tv itself to the internet.

    • How often does that happen?

  • +1

I have a few amazon fire sticks what’s the reason to get this?

    • It's $65? Buy now, think later!
Haha in all honesty you probably don't have much reason to get this if you're happy with your Amazon Fire Sticks unless you would have a need for screen casting from Chrome browser, Windows device, smartphone or other cast-enabled device.

      • I have iPhone and iPads in house kids have android phones and we projectors trying to figure if be useful for projector which im sure fire stick would do same

    • +2

Native apps for Kayo / Foxtel / Kodi / Binge.

  • Good I hold back yesterday @ $75 :)

    • It was $65 with code but it's mydeal vs amazon so yeah this is better

      • Yeah, saw that so inquired first if the one with MyDeal is the Australia version as it doesn't have a model number. They just replied that it is, but agree, Amazon is better.

  • +2

you can run a xbox controller off it and use nvidia geforce now. :D

  • If I connect this to a monitor that has speakers, is it possible to increase/decrease the audio of Netflix, Prime, Syncler etc using the remote? I connected a Firestick to the monitor and it wouldn't allow me. Had to press the volume button on the monitor to change the volume.

    • I would also like to know this. It's a minor inconvenience to have both the tv remote and firetv remote within reach while watching things but an inconvenience nonetheless.

    • -1

I'd doubt it can change the monitor speaker volume.

It's either need to be IR capable or ARC which I doubt it supports either.

    • Yes it is…

I run one of these plugged into a Philips 32" Computer monitor..
Turn the volume all the way up on the monitor.. then use the volume control on the remote to change volume output from the Google TV :)

Having said that… you should have been able to use this method with the Fire Stick as well

    • +1

You should be able to do it. Just go to Settings>Configure remote buttons>Volume and set it to control the Chromecast volume.

    • Yes unlike the firestick the Chromecast with Google TV has it's own volume adjuster, but you have to set it in the settings for the remote to do this as the default is for it to CEC and control the TV's volume as if it's the TV's own remote. Firestick OTOH doesn't have it's own internal volume control.

  • I already have a chromecast, what advantage does google tv give?

    • +2

These run Android TV, which allows you to install and run apps and games directly on the device, rather than streaming from your mobile device.

Personally, the "Recommended for you" feature is great because it consolidates your tv and movie recommendations from Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, etc all into one feed on the home screen.

    • +1

One advantage is you can program the google tv to control your soundbar as well.

Works great for me so I only need the one remote now.

I also find it much faster and more responsive than using the Chromecast.

    • I’m upgrading my old Chromecast because you can sideload alternate apps like …YouTube players with SponsorBlock.

  • Can you add this to a pc monitor to watch stuff on there just curious?

I’m thinking of setting up outdoor projector outside this or fire stick?

    • +1

Yeah mate, I used to use it on my monitor all the time and then just have it running through headset / monitor speakers for sound.

  • Hoping someone can help….

I have 2 of these, both connected to LG C1 TV's. One 48 in my bedroom and another 65 in my daughters games room.

Both with Bose Soundbars, 500 and 700 respectively.

For some reason, only one of the 2 shows OSD for volume. The other won't. Both were set up from scratch recently.

Any thoughts where problem lies? The inconsistency really bugs me.
