I bought 2 returns Bologna Napoli not long ago under €100 for a family member. Italo is a great and fast service. I’m hoping to use next time I go to Italy.

  • +8

Maybe one day we will have HSR, at least on the east coast. Fingers crossed Albo.

    • +1

I don't think it makes sense economically tbh

      • +22

Not all public infrastructure structure has to turn a profit. There would be other advantages like reducing carbon emissions from personal cars, improving liveability of regional hubs rather than just capital cities, and propping up the construction industry for a good 1-2 decades if that's something you're into

        • -4

Yes and then taxes will go up to pay for it and people will start whining about paying more tax. If it doesn’t at least break even then who is paying for it. You.

          • +8

@illusion99: This happens anyway, you pay for a lot of things others gain from

          • +1

            @illusion99: That already happens here!
Most long distance rail services provide heavily subsidised tickets to those on concessions. Whole carriages can be on those cheap tickets.

            • +3

@INFIDEL: Oh I agree. I’m just saying people will still whine about it.

              • -1

@illusion99: True, its all in the way we look at it…
                And our vested interests.
                Rule 1: people always whine!

Subsidised rail tickets over long term, aren't as obvious a cost compared to subsidising upfront asset costs.

"Can-do-capitalism" doesn't mind that long term State subsidy, but usually don't like any interference in projects.

            • @INFIDEL: Nothing necessarily wrong with concessions… It's a government decision.

But those people won't pay the much. higher price for ticket on HST!

It's an undisclosed cost not usually considered in economics of providing a rail service.

I've got about $120 off $141 rail travel! NEVER AGAIN! (Broke the return journey.)
Wouldn't recommend it as needed treatment for neck after 1000km sitting up for 18 hr in very uncomfortable seat!

Like in other countries, that Narrow Gauge line imposes speed restrictions! So unlikely to become HSR line.
Staff told me it operates at a loss.

I rarely use the Shinkansen on my many travels in Japan. Popular when (business) people need to travel distance - fast. I enjoy slower rail travel… or hitchhike in rural areas. A wonderful.cheap way to travel & meet locals!

              • @INFIDEL: They won’t at the start, but if you build it they will come.

You can induce demand even faster by strategically building it.

For example starting with Sydney to Canberra and then extending it to Albury and finally Melbourne.

          • @illusion99: To be fair, road maintenance costs approximately 80 times as much as rail.

A leaner road network would save the state a lot of money.

            • @Muten-Roshi: There used to be a practice in some countries, that all long distance freight had to be carried by rail.
(Travelling within France long ago, there were few long distance coaches - rail was the only option, unless you had private transport.)

Trucks merely distributed to / from rail terminals. Had many advantages - less road traffic & accidents, less road maintenance costs, more patronage of the rail system, etc.

But was seen as monopolistic / uncompetitive.

Rail systems were usually let run down or closed. (Thinking was… A leaner road rail network would save the state a lot of money.) There's a lot of money to be made from road freight, road upgrades, etc. That would have influenced the change.

        • reducing carbon emissions

Maybe very long term, but all that steel is very very dirty.

Also we share mostly the same arguments against HSR as the US does.
          https://www.google.com/search?q=why+does+the+us+not+have+hig…

All that money and infrastructure is a big waste and could better be directed elsewhere. I'm not against infrastructure investment, but hsr just doesn't make sense in this country. Not yet anyway.

          • +1

@TEER3X: Your link says US has a high speed rail between Boston and Washington so I guess it must be economically viable for that section. That’s probably comparable between Sydney and Melbourne?

          • +1

@TEER3X: Nobody is saying connect every single city or town in Australia by rail. Just start with the main east coast corridor. Just like the US has done. According to your link they have selectively built high speed rail on the most economical and busy corridors not the entire country. Why can’t Australia do the same?

        • Just like highways that are subsidised by the gov , only even worse corruption, but we don't talk about that .

        • Dies the construction industry in the east need propping up? If not up all those who need to build.

        • Got be more reliable than flying

      • +2

And this is the reason it has never happened. Can’t have your head in the sand in regards to air travel, fossil fuels going to run out

      • -1

The first workable prototype of the Internet ARPANET was established in the 60s and first used in 1969. It didn't make any sense economically back then. Imagine if it were happening this year in Australia and our LNP "economists" arguing against it. LOL

        • +4

Which is why our NBN is a mess of a technology. LNP says not economically viable to have fibre across the board. And now we are wasting all this money upgrading FTTN to FTTP.

          • -1

@illusion99: All we need is for the ALP to be in majority the entirety of the project, so the LNP can't butt in and water it down for myopia and corporate interests.

I propose we make Albo God-Emperor for Life

    • there's a few competing HSR trains. Italo is the 360km/h train. frecciarossa is 300km/h. when will we get fast trains here?? even morocco has them !! sheesh

      • Morocco is tiny though

        • +1

Morocco is also less rich than Australia. So if they can make it worth financially…

          • @illusion99: Yes but they need less Lego blocks than we do to build their train system

      • +1

And the unions would have a field day with such a large infrastructure project in Australia…..

  • Frecciarossa vs Italo?

    Difference?

    • +1

Not many practical differences. Choose based on price if the times line up between the two. Trenitalia also has discounted fares if you book well in advance - the earlier the better. When I last compared, Trenitalia had a wagon set up as a bar, whereas this wasn't available on Italo. I'm a little biased towards Trenitalia.

      • Yeah i honestly never heard of Italo. I travelled 10 years ago predominantly on the Tren.

Honestly always good to have an option! Thanks for replying, will look into it more when I have some time.

      • +1

Something to consider! Do your research.

Watched rail travel in Romania on SBS last night. 8hr without even water available!
That's a long time between drinks! Only could jump out at stations! And hope you.get back on train…

        • Romania.
I’m confused how this has to do with Italy train travel.
Can you please elaborate for me

          • +1

@FredAstair: Best to check the facilities available on any train before booking / boarding.

Shouldn't be a problem in Italy. But helps you plan what to to take on board.

            Was shocked by the doco…
Never thought an 8 hour journey would lack such basic provisions like drinking water or anything to eat & drink (even if in a poorer country)!

I've travelled extensively & sometimes extremely cheaply - but always had water! (Just no toilets! Local kids had a good laugh!)

Can't make assumptions - it can ruin your holiday.

      • TrenItalia is who i used for my Milan>bologna travel. i didnt have a mask on me and Rail travel at the time still required masks and was told to buy one from the bistro Wagon, ended up staying in that little bar with a table to myself eating cheese salami and crackers and smashing down a half-bottle of red. 10/10 would definitely do again.

        • I did that route a couple of times every week when I was living in Bologna.

  • +1

    Yep going to Sorrento, perfect

  • +3

    Just booked a round trip Brescia-Rome 1st class refundable for 48€. It’s-a-bargain! 🫰🫰🫰🤌🤌🤌

    • -1

It's the chynna virus dont forget!!

    • You have a distorted view of reality wake the Fk up.. fcking retard conspiracy theorist lol

  • Very odd - for some reason there are only "Flex"/full price tickets available on my travel date of 1/06, however other dates before/after this have plenty of availability across all options.

    • Same for me on the return

    • would you believe it I'm trying to book the exact same date and the same issue! All other days I can get the tickets I want for 7 euro and then BAM 49 euro on the 1st/2nd June. I did some googling and the 2nd is a Public Holiday but surely there is another reason?

      • Surely a holiday, good pickup regardless as I am leaving that day too and good to know as Rome may be busy

        • I’m also going to Rome on 06/06 lol

        • June 2 is republic day so maybe that might be a factor?

      • I noticed this too. On Thursday, Rome to Naples was 9.90 euros and when the sale started it was 49 euros - looked like all weekend trains were 49 :(

      • Must be a popular date then!! I ended up making a booking on some remaining discounted fares with Trenitalia - business class was around €30.

  • never been to Italy and not planning till retirement

but hey here's an upvote anyway

    buongiorno!

  • Italian rail has a well-earned reputation around luggage theft. Keep one hand on your suitcases or take measures to protect them.

Take extra care when booking your tickets through ItaloTreno or ItaliaRail. They are resellers for TrenItalia (the rail operator) and a quick google shows how much support you'll get if you need to change your plans.

My last experience on Italian HSR was good otherwise. It was a fast, comfortable train that got me where I needed to go.

    • +1

Just to fact check you…..ItaloTreno is not a reseller, you are buying directly from the company using this website - it is a completely different, privately owned and competing company to Trenitalia.
