      Because it's used I assume

For a $200 laptop? 3 months sounds "reasonable" to me

        • +3

I'm pretty sure the ACL still applies to refurbished goods. In that case, it would be based on how long a reasonable consumer would expect the laptop to last.

I'm not sure I would expect a 3-month lifetime to be reasonable at $200.

          • +1

@ihfree: If a laptop lasts only 3 months, I'm just not going to bother, not even for $20.

          • @ihfree: That would equate to around $66/month rental. Definitely not a bargain the way I look at it.

          • @ihfree: The ACL does apply, but you are getting a pretty good laptop for $200. If I sold a used iPhone X for $200, then a 3 month warranty is pretty fair.

        • -2

Maybe to you but should be atleast 12 month

          • @asa79: I agree that it "should" last 12 months, and I think most second hand electronics are overpriced, however 3 months is pretty standard across any retailer for second hand "refurbished" goods, and i think that's reasonable given the nature of buying used goods.

For the most part it seems the second hand market doesn't consider lack of warranty in the pricing, whether on gumtree, ebay, from retailers, etc.

          • +1

@asa79: some people here don't get it!!!! it's an old laptop…. recycled/refurbished for peanuts! …. some are so unreasonable.. MY RIGHTS. blah blah. Should be …

            • -2

@id: Well then don't call it a bargain. This is ozbargain not ozsellyourpeanuts. If you post a deal claiming, it's a bargain then be prepared to be criticized.

              • @rack: 229!!! it's a bargain for what u get..

    • -6

      @rack
The OP has no faith in his items lasting any longer?

      I'd expect 10 Months minimum.

      • -4

Exactly and I not sure why you are being neged. I'd expect it to last that long as well.

      • +1
        • Even new goods are expected to last beyond their standard warranty periods.
        • Warranty is always separate from ACL. Many companies include a note about this in their warranty statements
        • On the rare occasion where retailers say "Covered X years under ACL" your comment might be valid.
        • In the case of the laptop, I would expect well beyond the warranty period and beyond even a year.
      • 10 is a pretty specific number of months. How'd you come to that?

  • +2

Why no REFB20 or REFB22? I want the HP X360 because I'm getting sick of my chromebook

If I could use REFB22 on the HP, it'd be $428 and I'll buy it

    • @MetroCom will you jack it up if you join the REFB20? :D

Eligible Items” means items listed on eBay.com.au where a link to these terms and conditions and the coupon redemption code REFB22 (Members) and REFB20 (Non-Members) is found in the item listing, or the item appears in the following URL:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/e/coupon-offers/20-to-22-off-refurb-back-to-school-jan-23

      • +1

They won't because it's opt in and they'll have to cop the entire 20-22%. So I don't blame them. The PLUSJAN1 5% codes are paid for by eBay I believe.

        I'd rather buy this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/304765897383
For $323 with 16gb RAM, and the seller said the batteries are ~60-70%

        • +1

          @rosebank
Cheers mate, brought one for my Mrs.

  • +1

Quick one … is the RAM upgradable on either the Lenovo T480 or T490?

    • +3

Yes, they both have 8gb sodiered and one ram slot for upgrade. T490s is 16gb which has used the ram slot already so you will need to swap the 8GB to a bigger size to upgrade.

      • Thanks! Any links (or deals??) to compatible RAM?

        • +4

Create an alert in OzBargain for "DDR4 SODIMM" and wait.

      • Thanks OP. Can I double check this please?

Pretty sure the T490s is 16gb soldered, and T480s is 8gb soldered + 1 slot that accepts up to 16gb DDR4-2166.

I recieved the T490s tonight but only looked up online and 3rd party manufacturers I checked said soldered.

I'm assuming the T480s processor gen will pull DDR4 Sodimm back to 2166

        • +1

Hi yes I only realized that T490 has 16GB soldered ram when I opened it. Previously only opened T480s, thought they were the same.

          • @MetroCom: All good. 16gb will do fine for this use.
Very impressed with build quality, performance, and condition. Thanks OP

  • Great unit. Used it for 7 years (basic tasks) until my Rasta SSD died the other week

    • Any warning before it died?

      • +2

In my experience you don't really get a warning they just shit themselves.

That's why we have backups :)

        • +2

You can use tools to check the Health Status for SSDs, it's a percentage of how much lifespan is estimated to be remaining. Not exactly sure of how it's calculated, but had some random crashing recently, and the Windows logs pointed to a disk suddenly not being found randomly.

Checked it's Health Status and it was down to 14% (my other SSD bought at the same time was still above 90%).

That's the last time I cheap out on a BX500.

          • +2

@kapone: Health status is based on writes to the NAND (which is limited) vs expected write ratings.

SSDs also just die spontaneously unrelated to the writes - i.e. controller can just die. I've had this happen on an expensive samsung model a few years ago, only ~2 years old and still 98% "life" left.
Like knk said, no warning, it just failed suddenly.

      • It was sorta my fault I think. Was running a program called caffeine which keeps your computer awake and it got looped in hibernation so I think it surged the SSD. I always used hibernation, now I shut down.

  • +3

As the battery condition is only 60%, you may want to consider battery replacement cost if you want to use the laptop without plugging in.

    • They are like $30

      • That makes you wonder why they don't swapped them out and put in a $30 brand new battery. It will be a good selling point.

It is because a genuine Lenovo Battery cost more than $30…unless it is just a refurb or compatible.

        • Agree, I have a recent experience with buying a new /replacement battery for my Thinkpad.
Cheapest replacement battery was about $50 and Lenovo Vantage said it only had 70% of original capacity.
The eBay seller did not offer replacement although the ad was insisting on "original capacity- not like some other sellers"

  • +6

I have one for diagnostic work, absolute rock solid laptops, built like brick shithouses too. I always recommend students and what not into one of these over a brand new "ideapad" or any of the other equivalent budget lines. You get so much more bang for buck.

    • Used a T480s as a work lease laptop for 3 years and was very sad to see it go. As you say, they are solidly built and tend to just keep going. I'd have bought mine in a flash but the company I work for wouldn't allow it. Shame, I think I'd used the keyboard maybe twice in 3 years. It was pristine :-(

      • Same. Mine still works bar hdd, it's too awesome and sturdy to get rid of. Horrible before I installed an SSD though.

  • Is it just me or is every single one of thease links broken with a "We looked everywhere.
Looks like this page is missing. If you still need help, visit our help pages." message?

    • +2

      They all work for me.

      • +3

Clearing cache and reopening the links worked. My bad, ignore me

  • is it possible to upgrade to win11 with these laptops for free or has that period or not worth doing?

    • +3

Doubtful. 6th gen isnt officially supported by Microsoft. You can probably hack it on there, but I think Microsoft reserve the rights to block future updates? Better off going for the t480 is you want win 11.

    • Only the 8th gen. You can hack a 6th gen - however you may need to do registry and other hacks.

      • +4

You can just create an installer using Rufus though obviously as stated above you don't know how long that configuration will be supported.

    • You can with workarounds, but stock for stock the CPU generation is too old to support it.

    • iirc all of these should be upgradeable. Pretty sure 4th gen ultrabook CPUs and above can upgrade

    • running win11 right now on my t470s, not a single problem what so ever.

  • +3

What cosmetic condition are these in, including screen?

  • Ooooh, that t480 is interesting!

  • +3

    Do these have backlit keyboards?

    • -5

If you're using your eyes to type, you're doing it wrong :D

      • Weird flex but ok

        • -1

Not a flex, just saying backlit kb's not really needed if you touch type. Lenovo always shied away from backlighting on T series, anyone remember those keyboard lights they had which was a which was built into the top of the screen?

says "Keyboard UltraNav 6-row, spill-resistant, multimedia Fn keys, optional LED backlight"

      ..so maybe

  • Confirming, do the T470Ss have thunderbolt?

  • +2

    Any 15 inch with numberpad?

  • +10

apologize for being a (profanity) in the last post, lesson learned on how to improve our service.

Loving your honesty! I don't know what happened in the past, but appreciate your approach now and owning whatever it was!

  • Are touch screens always gloss?

    • +1

Not always, especially in the Thinkpad range the touch screen are mainly not gloss but check the spec to confirm

  • -3

CPU sucks, and the 6th gen can not upgrade to win11 officially.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-6300U…

    • +14

How does it compare to other laptops available at $200?

      • +5

Great deal at the price point

        • +2

          I agree

  • +1

What's the pick of the bunch peeps?

    • My 2c thoughts on your question 12h ago - assuming there is more stock coming as they refurb from corporate source. NB: I bought a T490s (thanks OP).

      • I have been burned by enough HP failures to dodge the Elitebook - although I have never owned one and hear they are the better/best built units of the HP lineup.
      • The T470s is the budget choice. Can install Win11 with a few tweaks and substantial savings. RAM and SSD are upgradable, and old dock style is cheap. Too slow for me.
      • T480s is the popular reputed choice. One of the most upgradable lightweight business laptops in recent times and an easy corporate option. 250nits screens annoy me.
      • T490s was my choice after my 11th Gen Dell Inspiron died thanks to my 4yo son's clumsy water spill. Reasons for my choice vs T480s are:
—- Touch display Metrocom had is likely 300 nits vs 250 nits on T480s. Couldn't confirm spec of stock, but touch defaulted to 300nits in USA. My key reason vs other units.
—- T480s CPU performance is not great today, and T490s i5 is only 5-10% better with Whiskey Lake refresh. Minimal, but so is ~$47 price difference w/ 16GB RAM.
—- T480s has 8GB soldered plus a DIMM slot to add upto 16GB DDR4-2166. Reason #1 T490s was less popular is soldered RAM. Metrocom had 16GB; ok for my uses.
—- T480s has a full sized SD slot. Reason #2 T490s was less popular is 2018 photographers. MicroSD is now common. I will swap 256GB 2280 Nvme SSD with 1-2 TB.
—- T480s has an Ethernet port. Reason #3 was less popular with corporates is T490s needed a dongle. A USB-C Ethernet multiport's are cheap. I have one; unused.
—- T480s has Bluetooth 4.2 vs Bluetooth 5.0 (not on Metrocom specs, but as-built). Gives me more range with my Bose QC45's. Minor difference for most peeps.
Otherwise all of these slim Thinkpads are MIL spec tested with stronger chassis than most laptops at this pricepoint. My 4yo will put that to the test so I bought one.

Late to reply as now OOS. If in a hurry and on a budget, T470s still looks strong at this posted price from Metrocom rep

      • Will you be getting more in stock anytime soon (to still use the codes)?

      • Adding a bullet to my Thinkpad opinions above…

One plus point I missed for T470s is a second external battery option that attaches to the chassis for extended run time.

This was not available on the T480s which has an internal battery only and charges by round power adapter plug (I did not see USB-C charging in specs).

The T490s charges by USB-C so I will use my Baseus Blade then Gooloo GT3000 which both supply 100w and are usually with me when mobile.

  • i5-6300U with 256GB NVMe - is it really possible?

    • +4

      Why wouldn't it be possible?

      I ran a 4770 with boot from a 1TB m.2 NVME.

      • just didnt know that in those days had motherboards supporting NVMe on Skylake/Haswell :) thanks mate

        • I believe Skylake started supporting NVMe. My i5-5300U Haswell (on a X1C) did not support NVMe…

          • @ChairmanMeow: Yeah I have a Skylake running Samsung 970 Evo.

    • I have a T-470S with 1tb NVMe and 32gb of ram….. So it works fine :)

  • +3

the T4xxS series laptops are great units, they're not ultra lightweight powerhouses but they're small-enough, light-enough and robust-enough for a daily windows machine for most people

they're also exceptionally common so getting spare parts or replacement batteries should be quite easy

    i picked up a T480S for a mate, thanks guys :)

  • Any advise on what batteries fit the Lenovo ThinkPad T470S 14 FHD?

Getting a little confused on ebay, its has two batteries?

    • it does have 2 batteries.

  • +1

i read here people receommend getting at least gen 8, much better compare previous gen intels

  • @MetroCom

Says the code I applied is wrong at checkout.
    Any ideas?

    • Are you an eBay plus member? Its only EbayPlus.

      • Ah, when I first looked at the post it didn't have eBay Plus in the title. Thanks.

  • +3

The i7 Win11 one from them was $179 a few weeks ago

    • Yeah, that was a real deal. What gives? :( Bummed I missed out

  • What would you expect to pay for a T470s docking station? I've got one that I need to sell after having just handed back my old T470s to work

    • Compare ebay listings I guess, I bought mine last year so things may have changed….do you have the keys included though?

  • Hmm very tempted but only guaranteed 60% battery health is a concern.

    • +1

What do you expect? They're refurbs!

  • T480s, T490s OOS

  • +3

    How is this compare to Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 4th Gen 14" FHD laptop i5-6300U 8GB 256GB SSD Win11 ? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/304737105161

    • +1

X1 Carbon's RAM is soldered on, so you're stuck with 8GB. Also no ethernet port if you care about that.

  • +1

Any feedback on Elitebook? looking to get it for school as the others are OOS.

  • 🤞 hoping the T480s has a Smart card reader like it seem to be on the photos. Didn't see it mentioned in the description.

    • +1

My 480s arrived today, I also have a T14 model on my desk, both appear to have a smart card size block off plate on the side, don't think the hardware is actually present.

Other than that, really happy with the condition, screen looks great, inside it looks new. Battery health ~85% (under 200 cycles).
Just a small mark on the outside (top of lid) in one corner. Really surprised how it can look so new.

      • +1

        Thanks!
Received mine today. Same with the Smart Card reader - I'll look into installing it myself.

My battery is slightly over 200 cycles and close to 80% capacity left. Not ideal but at least can be charged from USB C eg don't have to have a separate charger with me always.
A bit disappointing and curious that it arrived with 0% battery charge. I hope it didn't stay on a shelf like that for long.

Cosmetically its in good condition. No signs of falls or serious damage. But its very worn - looks like my T430s from 2012. They have done a decent job buffing it up though. This in general doesn't bother me - just that I could have been luckier.
