What Subscriptions Are You Signed up to? Which Ones Do You Think Are Worth It?

Just curious what kind of subscriptions people are signed up to.

I myself am subscribed to a couple of streaming services and Audible, but am considering signing up for a Masterclass subscription and ditching one of the other ones.

I would create a poll but since you can't select multiple options here's a list of potential subscriptions people might be signed up to:

  • Streaming (e.g. Netflix, Stan, Paramount+, Disney+)
  • Audiobook (e.g. Audible)
  • Gift Box (e.g. Sakuraco, Lootcrate)
  • Fitness (e.g. Gym, Centr, Peloton)
  • Coffee (e.g. Coffee on Cue, Allways Coffee)
  • Toilet paper (e.g. Spacewhite, Ecocheeks)
  • Underwear (e.g. Knobby)
  • Vehicle (e.g. HelloCars, CarBar)
  • Magazine (e.g. Money Magazine, Men's Health)
  • Wine (e.g. Wine Selectors, Naked Wines)
  • Food (e.g. Hello Fresh, Lite N' Easy)
  • Porn (e.g OzBargain Pornhub Shared Family (no incest) Subscription)

Personally I reckon Amazon Prime is worth it, Audible is sort of worth it and Disney+ could be ceased.

What subscriptions are you signed up to? Which ones do you think are worth the money? Any interesting ones that you look forward to getting each month?

  • Youtube Premium
Amazon Prime (only for free delivery, i don't use prime video)
eBay Plus (free for the year, will not be paying for the next year ill cancel)
    iCloud+ 50GB
    Google one 100GB
    Newsdemon
    Eweka
    Drunkenslug
    Nzb.su

Occasionally ill sign up for a month to any of the gaming subs like EA play pro for example to play the latest game which ill in a few days to a week depending on the game then cancel.

  • Kayo because MotoGP isn't on 10 anymore
    .

  • Prime - worth it
Paramount - not but cheap and shared
WoW - what can I say, after 5 years, i was sucked back in. Worth it.

      Oh god lol.

      Classic or Retail?

Like a recovered heroin addict, I too have vividly good memories of WoW. One does not truly forget WoW…

      • Retail. Im too old in both real and player hours to bother raiding anymore so I am just plodding along catching up on quest lines etc.

I did create a character in Classic which as nice and nostalgic. Until the inconvenience of particular old UI mechanisms which reminded me why we moved on 🤣

  • NBA and MLB league pass, kayo, apple music, prime, various patreons for podcasts. pretty much all of them are heavily used (well not MLB right now cos its off season)

My stance on music streaming services… I spent a lot of money buying CDs… I spent a lot of time and effort ripping those CDs to mp3s and curating my music playlists so I could have all my music on a single USB drive in the car… I'll be damned if all that effort goes to waste and I have to spend more money for the privilege to curate my music playlists again on a service where I don't own the copy of the music.

Considering my taste in music is predominantly mid 2000s and earlier, I'm quite happy with my decision.

I think my last proper subscription to something was Hyper, PC Powerplay and Atomic MPC.

    • I don't understand NOT buying, subbing, music. You never learn the words for a start… So have to put with everyone in the car stopping and starting singing at the same point, then looking at each other like deer in the headlights to see what YOU think the words are.

      • LMAO. This reads like something Michael Scott would say.

    • Atomic was a good magazine

Amazon prime, EBay plus (only because of the $5/year offer), coffee-monthly deliveries of delicious caffeine goodness from Dog and Gun. Plus in the middle of a 6 month free trial of Apple Music which is quite good but I won’t pay for it once it finishes.

    • Haven't heard of Dog and Gun, will give them a go thanks :)

  • Spotify
    PS Plus
NBA League Pass (Argentina and shared with mate)
Nintendo Switch Online (Family account linked with 7 others)
Kayo (Thinking of cancelling considering prices have increased again)
    Western Bulldogs
Ebay Plus ($5 deal, probably wont keep once the year is up)
Disney+ (Had 3 months free from Telstra points but I don't think it's worth it as a paid service will probably cancel)
GF has a binge subscription that I use occasionally

I've been thinking of subscribing to Edge Magazine, I should start reading something again.

Overall I think the only ones I get the full use out of are Bulldogs, NSO, PS Plus, League Pass and Spotify. Though most, if not all wouldn't be worth the money if I had to pay full price.

    • I've been thinking of subscribing to Edge Magazine, I should start reading something again.

I mentioned PressReader in another comment, you can get some magazines through it (unless you want to read hard copies).

Plex. I do have the ocasional Netflix OR Disney+ OR Binge/STAN. If Im looking for a show and ALL the seasons arent from ONE subscription. Ill be on my ship. If it does I sub to one and once im done for the month Ill switch to another I will never sub to more than one at a time. I moved to Netflix because they had everything AWAY FROM CABLE. Now everythings the (profanity) same I'm over it.

Make it easy like steam or spotify or nothing for you.

Apple Music student rate thanks UTAS includes Apple TV+ which I rarely use
Club Dendy because it's nice to go to the cinema occasionally
City of Sydney Pools swimming and fitness

  • Only prime worth it with shipping, movies & music $5/month

  • We have
    Amazon prime
    Netflix
    Optus sport
    Amazon music - family

I think Amazon is worth it, but some of the features are behind the paywall (music unlimited, movies).

Optus sport is debatable since it now costs extra for optus customers AND removed Champions/Europa leagues

    • Yeah i also just fork out the money for optus sports purely for the convenience of mini matches. If you watch most games live then IPTV is a cheap alternative and you get better UK TV coverage.

      • If i wake up early/stay up for those midnight, 2/3am matches, i cant function safely…

My family has Netflix, Disney on and off which i use but I wouldn't pay for it myself.

  • My free Apple Music has been good, but certainly wouldn't pay for it (unless I can get a refund on all the music I purchased when I was young and stupid).
I have a google drive subscription that was paid for with surveys, but I've switched to an iPhone so that's going to have to go too.
I think I'll have little bits of free cloud storage all over the place in the future.

For me it's purely entertainment and productivity related

    1. YouTube premium
    2. Tidal
    3. Microsoft 365
    4. Hill Climb Racing 2
    5. Google storage
    6. Dropbox (wife uses this for her photography)
    7. Adobe Suite (also wife)

    Then there's the kids:

    1. Discord Nitro
    2. Roblox Premium x2
    3. Peppa Pig world
    4. Vlad & Niki cooking

Everything else I do my utmost to avoid, like buying fitness equipment instead of a gym membership, watching YouTube instead of paying for Netflix, etc.

I hate the whole premise of subscriptions instead of buying products because no matter how much you pay, you never actually own the product.. however this is the way the world is going do may as well jump on the wagon as you'll never beat it.

    • I hate the whole premise of subscriptions instead of buying products because no matter how much you pay, you never actually own the product.. however this is the way the world is going do may as well jump on the wagon as you'll never beat it.

I do. ThePirateBay. I get to own things they delete under the false claim of "racism" (Anyone know "Song of the South"? You should, it's referenced in so many other shows it's crazy. Ever heard the term "I'll go to my happy place"?) - or just because they feel like deleting today what you paid for yesterday.

      • I get to own things they delete under the false claim of "racism" (Anyone know "Song of the South"? You should,

This movie has always been considered controversial, even upon release. It’s not a new thing.

Also, how has something never released on streaming (or home media since laserdisc)“deleted” in the manner you speak? It’s not like Disney released it on streaming and then pulled it.

        • Nah, I mixed two different subjects together. I heard on some guy's youtube the other day about sub companies deleting stuff people have paid to "permanently" "own."

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah that can happen on digital stores. Better to stick to physical media.

            • @Randolph Duke: This is why I switched from Steam to GoG - GoG does DRM-free games, not that I have really made use of that ability.

              • @Chandler: Hmm which games have you lost on Steam?

I know for example that Dark Souls PTDE is no longer available to buy, but people can still play it if they've bought it.

                • @Ghost47: Sorry, misrepresented myself in my phrasing. My switching was more philosophical, due to GoG's stance on DRM, not due to actually being affected by Steam's DRM. Still love Steam, just like the true ownership angle slightly more, even though that true ownership may end up being just as difficult to excercies (yes, I can download a DRM-free installer to keep forever, but that will still require particular versions of OS, Drivers, etc; some hardware will not be supported, etc, etc. There will be a point in time where it will be very difficult or impossible to install the game. ANd that's ignoring). I still may not have made the right decision for me…

Haven't lost any games that I know of - by the time I really got invested into Steam, my gaming time was in decline, so most of my games in Steam were either free deals (thanks, OzBargain!) or cheap packs like The Orange Box. More than half of my games have 0 playtime, my highest is just over 600 hours, and we drop below 100 hours before you leave the top 10, <50 hours before leaving the top 15…

We have a mix of 3 families who have each bought one subscription and shares with the others. I have bought Disney + which I have shared. In return I get Netflix and Amazon Prime.

    • Netflix
    • Disney+
    • Amazon prime
    • Crunchyroll
    • Spotify
    • Onedrive (includes office)
    • Ebay+, but only renew when most (or all) of the fee is given back as voucher. I wouldn't pay for it.

It adds up but we use them all very regularly

Just pointing out that companies with subscription revenue are valued at higher multiple than one-off revenue. You are supplying that subscription revenue.

If you're interested in Audible and considering Masterclass, and based on your past informed comments, try The Great Courses and possibly Wondrium (streaming).

Ebay+ i resubscribe with inactive member promotion ($4-5 for year) else I dont think it's worth it.
News+ is good if you and your shared members are using their magazines, else I don;t think news alone is any worthwhile.
Fitness+ I found is decent as the tv and watch experience is really good.
In few months I would cancel atv+ / prime and get on either binge or stan.

What subscriptions are you signed up to? Which ones do you think are worth it?

    None. And none.

    • NetTicks, DisneyPuss, etc - bittorrent and thepiratebay (if we're going to allow them to brainwash us, at least don't pay them to do it)
    • Audiobook - Zzzz… I've listened to one chapter of one book, but would search thepriatebay if I felt the need - not there? Then I'd stop looking. :-)
    • Gift Box (e.g. Sakuraco, Lootcrate) - So… self gifts for people without friends. Stuff you don't know what it is and don't need or you'd own it already.
    • Fitness - Get a rowing machine which covers I think it's about 85% of your body, does it faster, and a few select weights for the rest.
    • Coffee - Overpriced expensive addictive crap that makes people's breath stink and the gift of withdrawal symptoms that come with it. "Can't get going without my morning coffee." No way to live.
    • Toilet paper - Aldi Confidence is the same or cheaper every time I compare prices. Quality sufficient given intended use. (It's for smearing s__t, not printing birth certificates, kid participation awards, or counterfeiting.) ;-D
    • Underwear - Real men don't buy underwear. Their wife does out of frustration when they wear it until only the top elastic band remains, or it clogs their washing machine pump (which he's capable of fixing himself… cause he's a real man). :-)
    • Vehicle (e.g. HelloCars, CarBar) - $129 a week? Seriously!? That's $6708 a year with nothing to show for it! Just buy a cheap heap, silver paint still looks clean when dirty or drive through a carwash once a week, only add oil and do nothing else to it not even a new filter, then hose it off and resell it for $1500-$2000 less one month before rego and be $4708 ahead. Or use Uber. No-one cares what car anyone else drives except people buying multi-million $ homes (their real estate agent drives them to see) and Uber passengers if the driver turns up in an obligatory green Leyland P76, open roof Mini Moke, or coffin Nissan Cube.
    • Magazine - https://downmagaz.net
    • Wine - Tried it a few times, reminds me of grape juice mixed with paint thinner. Love plain grape juice. Beer is crap too. Stinks like pissed grumpy grandfathers in brown cardigans.
    • Food (e.g. Hello Fresh, Lite N' Easy) - What a con. Select 24 meals, cook them over a few hours one day per month, then divide into freezer containers. Or choose 24 fresh meals that take minimum effort to make fresh. Or 12 of each. e.g. Stir fries are on the plate in only twice the time it takes to heat a frozen dinner. Doing the same 24 meals means you still have variety but the same shopping list, don't have to think about it, you shave more time off every time you make it, and soon don't need instructions, save money, impress people who drop by, etc. And you can replace meals at will until you have 24 you like so who cares which one I grab with my eyes closed. No time to prepare? Do it instead of watching porn, woke groomer movies, snoring on the lounge drunk, or with a migraine headache from coffee withdrawal. :-p
    • Porn - Lots of studies now showing the negative effects, even impotence/ED. Great news for non-viewers though, so, um… "keep it up" I guess to increase available supply for the rest. Or improve yourself, don't settle for low value toxic-feminist-infected women (or soy boys who buy their own gifts, underwear, excessively soft toilet paper, and washing machine repairmen), find a quality one to marry, live in the real world instead of "w__k over tattooed skank" wtih a gina that looks like a toddler's, whose friends snigger when you walk in and you're not quite sure if you heard the nickname "limpy" whispered 15 years early.
    • +3

      +1 for the effort

    • You sound like a fun person.

      • It was mostly tongue in cheek but that doesn't translate well with text. The grumpy grandfather in brown cardigan and only underwear elastic remaining were big giveaways. ;-D

    • Wow, you certainly have strong opinions. I hope you still find some enjoyment in life. Tc.

    • Jesus I wasn't expecting someone to criticise the list of potential things they'd be subscribed to, just list out and talk about what they are subscribed to haha.

Another +1 for your efforts sir.

    • Curiositystream - highly recommend this one. Its a gold mine if you are into documentaries and infotainment.
    • Amazon prime
    • Netflix
    • I do like docos quite a bit, but I don't know if I'd pay for a streaming service specifically for documentaries. Docos are usually also on other streaming services, so you get docos + entertainment which for me makes a doco-only streaming service not as attractive.

      • Well the sub is very cheap like 30 USD p.a. for standard sub and hosts wide set of docos from various categories. Any other entertainment sub is almost double that. I have seen few docos on netflix and felt it's still heavilly targeted towards getting more viewership than putting insightful raw information across also there's only handful of them.
You can give it a try for a month for around 4-5 bucks and decide later (can't recall if they have a free trial or not but you can get a sneak peek of their library here.
It is one of the best subs I have got ever not that I have too many but still value you get for spending your time, money is far higher compared to other subs.

  • Youtube Premium (India Family Plan) - worth it as I use YT and YT Music quite a bit.
Netflix (Turkey) - probably will get rid of this soon due to another price increase and cracking down on account sharing
Prime Video - use prime shipping quite a bit so consider this a freebie. Has some good content on there as well.
Disney+ (Turkey) - worth it for the lower price, gets used a fair bit with the family

Also have Foxtel Go and Stan that my dad has shared, but don't get used as much as my subs above. I sometimes sub to Audible when they have cheap deals to get some audiobooks I'm after ($2 for 2 months)

    • $2.50/month for Youtube premium (India) - mostly for the music.
    • PIA (VPN) - I think last time it was $5 for 2 years after cashback. Great service for what I use it for.
    • Used to pay for a gym membership, until it expired last month and was going up ~30%. Set up a home gym with second hand items of gumtree. Way better than the gym now, wish I did it years ago.
    • Prime - whenever I get something from amazon where it makes sense ill subscribe for a month, and set it to not-auto renew. Will get a bunch of stuff that month for free shipping. Usually 3-4 times a year.
    • Wine: Get a box delivered with a $100 off introductory voucher that you get from different ebay sellers. Unsubscribe after the box arrives. Usually works out to ~$5-7/bottle. Do that every few months.
  • I don't subscribe to many services, but Readly is a good one for me. Unlimited magazines, $12 a month.

    • +5

Do you know about PressReader? You can read a lot of magazines through it and it’s free if you have a library membership.

      • +1

yes, plus all sorts of newspapers. Although I find the interface to be a bit clunky. But hey, it's free, cant complain

      • Yeah I've heard of it, but I didnt know it was free with library membership. Thats interesting, thanks for that!
I dont think I've used a council library since the early 1980s as a kid so I might have to try and get a new one.

        • +1

All good. I used Money Magazine as an example in my OP but it’s actually free through PressReader. I guess it really depends if people think it’s worth spending money on the physical magazine.

        • +1

Commenting for posterity in case anyone searches. Depending on your interest, Pressreader is a good, free alternative. I did find its selection of music magazines quite poor compared to Readly, so I think I’ll be sticking with the Readly sub.

On a positive they do have a few more US science magazines, like Astronomy, which Readly doesn’t. So it’s a great complementary service considering it is free.

  • Spotify

    Anytime fitness ($16 week)

    Free/nearly free:

  • Definitely Amazon Prime, great for shopping, twitch, prime video, and I haven't even tried prime music, and it's cheap compared to all the others.

    Definitely worth it for me:
Vpn/getflix as it allows me to watch Italian/uk etc channels
    YouTube music (or any equivalent)
EBay since I get lots of offers.
Rest of the streaming services kind of (Netflix is shared with my family only and I pay for all of them but it’s the Turkish one hence worth it)

Spotify (pay full price for this bu t it is worth it i feel)

Apple TV (on a 3mo free trail will cancel before trial ends)

Huge upvote on the HS Rewards. The best value out there because of the Kayo deal

    • Herald Sun (I sign up for the 4-5 dollar a Month promos and cancel gives access to herald sun rewards which has saved me more then ive ever spent)

The website says you can get "freebies", what kind of rewards have you received?

      • nothing of worth subscribing for magazines, 4 months binge etc

but you add that in with the discounts on Kayo etc and if you get a promo for like 4 bucks a month for 3 months or something and churn and burn the bonus period it is pretty good

    Amazon Prime
Google One / YouTube Premium family
Flickr - this was the best photo backup facility when we first used it and have all our photos there. It's a passive pain to move to somewhere else and we have not bothered just yet. We are still backing up to Flickr automatically.
