$115.52 total, doing the “buy 2nd item, get 5% off”

Using $3.99 paperback as 2nd item.

  • I've got a 3+ year old Dell Inspiron 13 (5379) laptop. Wonder if I can swap its SSD to this?

    • +3

It seems this laptop doesn't have m.2 nvme support, but it's best to open your laptop and check for yourself.

      • +2

I generally use the Crucial Advisor to work out what Crucial products would work with my hardware, and then just compare the Crucial product with their equivalents from other vendors.

    • +2

As FDA2020 said, doesn't appear in spec sheets to have a m.2 hdd slot, only a m.2 slot for wifi/bluetooth card.

https://youtu.be/AB9lt8OCIXA?t=100 Internals can be seen here and no visible slot either, so looks like a no.

But reviews seem to say it does have a subpar ssd in it from factory, so you could find a better 2.5" SSD for a boost.

      • Could he put the m.2 into a 2.5" hd enclosure/adapter to mate it fit? I think I did that in my old optiplex

        • +3

No, that would only work with SATA m.2 drives.
There isn’t a converter to interface an NVMe drive to SATA afaik

      • +4

All that performance limited to 560MB/s.

    • Thanks guys.

    • Does your 3+ year old still like to eat crayons?

  • +14

What's your favorite colour of crayon? I'm an orange kinda guy :D

    Is it PS5 compatible?

    • -1

      Yes

      • Technically compatible maybe, recommended no. Sony recommends a minimum read of 5,500mb.

        • My Sabrent read at 4000mbs and worked this would be fine. Plays the new GOW fine

          • @solidussnake: Existing titles may technically work now but there is no guarantee a future title will not have issues.

    • +1

      Needs a heat sink though

      • For the uninitiated, is that something I can buy and add on easily?

        • +1

Yes buy thermal pads for VRAM and stick it on . Then hot glue an aluminium metal plate on top of the thermal pads. DIY.

      • What about in a laptop, would it still need a heatsink?

      • Doesn't need one for gaming.

    • WD does not recommend this for PS5 because it technically is below 5500MB/s through PS5 test. NASCompare tested it and confirmed it is around 5200MB/s.

However, at this price range, you currently cannot expect an SSD that conforms to PS5's full requirements. NASCompare did hit the SLC recovery when testing this SSD it seems (but to be fair, it is the same for most of the newer, more cost effective PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD).

    • There's a video here where someone tried it out. I thought it help up pretty well, but a heat sink definitely seems to be a good idea.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn9If_d9Ykk

      • NASCompare appears to show a file transfer of what happened after SLC cache is exhausted and the SSD is in SLC cache recovery mode (it has to do that due to its more aggressive use of dynamic SLC cache). For most people, this issue should only happen once.

To be fair, the other DRAMless SSDs in this price bracket with similar specs are in the same boat. The actual NAND used in SN770 is roughly in the same class as SN570. SN750's NAND is better quality. However, for reads, SN770's 4 channel PCIe gen 4 controllers does beat SN750's 8 channel PCIe gen 3 controller when running in PCIe gen 4 x4 mode.

I like eating crayons - Upboat for honesty…. and also price

    • +1

I prefer eating my crayons upboat over downboat.

      • What ever floats ya boat.. as long as you're eating crayons!

  • What flavour crayons?

  • any deals on crayons?

    asking for a friend

  • Mmmm…. Crayons

  • No crayons included no deal!

  • I prefer to shove crayons up my nose

  • Is the HMB function limited to a certain generation of CPUs/motherboard chipsets onwards? Or will it work in a 4th gen intel Z97 or X99 platform? Don't care about super fast speeds, just care about the cache or in this case the tech replacing the cache and what happens if it isn't there due to old tech.

    • It is more of an operating system thing. Windows 10, 11 should be fine.

Sony doesn't recommend DRAMless SSDs for PS5 because its OS doesn't support HMB for m.2 (neither is Microsoft for CFastExpress).

      • Mmmmm, does anyone happen to know if Unraid supports HMB? I know it's linux based, so leaning towards maybe…

        • +1

          Linux supports HMB.

      • Does HMB work over USB in windows?

        • +1

Doesn't appear to be the case, at least not with my test. However, using USB does have more penalty than DRAM vs DRAMless. The test was done using USB 3.2 gen 2.

Using USB, the random read IOPs QD1 of a DRAMless SSD dropped by 45%, random write dropped by 65%, mixed (70/30 read/write split) dropped by 47%.

Using USB with an SSD with DRAM, those drops were: 37%, 51%, 40%. So we are looking at extra 8% drop in read and 14% drop in write. A newer DRAMless SSD with a much better controller can make up the difference.

Note: just an example, it is not objective. I don't own a SN770 so the SSDs tested were other SSDs.

  • Still running an intel Optane H10 in a x360 Spectre 10750H…
Time for an UPG I wonder… Need to check specs (unless anyone has them handy)?

    • For that CPU, intel is stating PCIe gen 3 support only. That explains why HP puts in a PCIe gen 3 SSD in it. Intel Optane is technically PCIe gen 3 x4 split into x2 x2 mode (one for Optane cache, one for the QLC SSD).

So you cannot take full advantage of this SSD. Therefore, you need to decide whether this price is good enough for you as a PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD. 1TB SN570, just as an FYI, was $91 recently.

      • Remember reading some stuff about that when i decided to go with that model (NB). It was a good thing and setup at the time. 12-18months old bow, but still a solid unit. Dont see it providing any real advantage anyways, the current SSD might in fact be a better config.

Will take a look later on.

        Thanks for the note.

Samsung 970 Evo Plus PCIE 3.0 with DRAM
    or
WD Black SN770 PCIE 4.0 without DRAM?

Which will be better for a main drive & gaming drive?
Is DRAM or the latest PCIE Gen more important?

    • Assuming your M.2 slot is PCIE 4.0 compatible, you most likely won't notice a difference in the real world.

    • Best to google and find a comparison with benchmarks.

  • +1

    Ummmm wut?

Batteries ‎1 Lithium Ion batteries required.

Reviews are pretty average compared to P5 Plus or KC3000. Think I'll keep waiting for a decent Gen4 drive (P5 Plus/KC3000). Seems to be on-par with highest end Gen.3 drives.

  • stop eating crayons please!

  • Is this compatible with "PCIe NVMe SSD"? The laptop in question https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Yoga-720-15IKB-7700HQ-F…

Can't find how to check, the "Crucial Advisor" suggested earlier think it has ide ssd.

P.S. I only wash crayons off walls, no eating…

    • +1

Can't find how to check, the "Crucial Advisor" suggested earlier think it has ide ssd.

I don't think I've seen an IDE SSD in use, except as a joke and/or in conjunction with some retro hardware.

Is this compatible with "PCIe NVMe SSD"? The laptop in question <Snip Snip>

The stock one looks like an OEM Samsung M-keyed nvme drive running at Gen 3. The SN770 should fit, but will most likely be limited to Gen 3.

    • +1

According to the link, it has a Samsung PM961, which is essentially a Samsung 960 EVO. In that case, it will be compatiable, but as @Namidairo says you won't get max speeds out of it and depending on how well your current drive has aged, it might not even be much faster, but you will get 4x the space though!

  • And it still costs like $300-350 for an xbox 1tb expansion drive lol

Just got mine today….. they sent me a 500Gb!! Only option is to refund. Was waitng to do my PC upgrade for this part then they send me the wrong one.
