would rather hop on the 770 drive

  • Can some storage guru drop in here to answer something for me: I heard that the SN570 is the neutered mid tier replacement for the SN550 after WD ruined the orginal SN550 somehow-can anyone confirm? Is it true? Or was it exaggerated?

    • Probably little difference in day to day use (I am not a guru though). :)

    • +1

That is correct. While the controller did improve a bit, the sustained write in SN570 is still inferior than the original SN550. People are generally unhappy about all that. Crippled SN550 then had the nerve to introduce SN570. Most retailers don't sell SN550 nowadays.

Another question mark is whether the current batch of SN570 1TB received the similar treatment as the 2TB version recently (a far more aggressive dynamic SLC cache).

  • Is the Silverstone heatsink any good?

  • +1

Thanks op, grabbed one with some other stuff and used Amex $50 back.
So eventually got much needed 1tb SSD upgrade for my 256GB SSD XPS13 for $29

    • Hi what offer can use on Amex?

    • i thought amex finished yesterday?

      • Today

    • may i know what offer on Amex will qualify this purchase for $50 cash back?

      • It is over now, spend $300 to get $50 back

I have not got any response for the last gift card promotion yet.

I entered the promotion on 28 Nov 2022.

If you are not in need for SSD, I would suggest NOT buying

    • You checked your e-mails? I think WD sends 2 e-mails. One for the e-Gift card. Another one for the CVV.

      • Is there a fee for using the mastercard giftcard?

      • +2

Yes, I even asked them what was the status last month (After waiting for 6 weeks) and here was the response

All the entries are still in the process of validation and all valid claims will be contacted within 28 days of the close of the claims form. The promotion ended on January 8, and the close of the claims form is on January 15.

Today is 1 Feb, I have not heard anything yet.

In fact, thanks to this post, it reminded me to contact them again.

        • Jan 15 + 28 days is mid Feb. So probably don't contact them yet…

          • @JohnSy: My gift card arrived today. Claim date on 29th December.

No avoid Centrecom / blacklist Centrecom comment yet?

  • damn i already have three

  • Sold out online at Centrecom

    • Looks like the "free" heatsink add-on is finished as well.

  • Is this better than the Amazon Kingston Gen 4 NVME that was here a short while ago.. Speed shows its better but Gen3 vs Gen4?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753753

    • If your device only has PCIe gen 3, and you care more about reads, then SN570 is better. NV2 carries a risk of getting QLC version. There are only 3 reasons you would consider NV2 over SN570:

      • The ability to use it on PS5, despite being under specs by a lot, is attractive to you.
      • You don't care about getting the QLC version.
      • Price is cheaper (which, due to the $20 e-gift card, isn't the case at the moment).
      • Just ordered a Z690 board with dual Gen4. I have a Gen3 drive at the moment, can't remember what it is. Will check tomorrow when I rip the stuff out of the case.

Just looking for a 1tb with good speeds but still affordable (anything around $100)

        • You don't need to rip the SSD out of the case. Just install CrystalDiskInfo and it tells you what SSD(s) you currently have.

Gen4, I think it is better to get a quality one. NV2's 1TB performance (in PCIe gen 4 x4) can often be inferior to SN570 (running in PCIe gen 3 x4). Honestly though, you get what you paid for. Both SN570 and NV2 do have cost cutting measures in place (that's why they are at this price). I use my NV2 on PCs with only PCIe gen 3 slots (it just doesn't feel like a proper PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD).

However, you are being pragmatic and not planning to buy SSDs which are really overkill for general usage.

          • @netsurfer: Forgot I had speccy on. Current OS drive is a Seagate Barracude 510GB. My game drive is a 2.5" Samsung SSD 870 QVO 1TB. Idea was to keep the Barracude for my OS and use this 1TB for my game drive and have the Samsung 870 as a work drive so that I Can get stuff off the 500gb. Running on about 50gb left on the OS drive

      • If your device only has PCIe gen 3
Is this an issue? I thought it was backwards compatible.

    • +1

NV2 is better at large file transfers - 88GB SLC equivalent vs 12GB SLC for SN570 at the top speed of approx 2700MB/s before dropping to sustained write speed.

Sustained writes are similar at 600MB/s, but TBW is much lower at 320 TBW and warranty is down to 3 years (5 years for the SN570).

Checking on real life benchmarks, the NV2 seems to lag behind the SN570 somewhat.

      • +1

I think we need people who bought one of these recently to do a sustained write test. The reason is, based on the old reviews, if SN570 1TB has a 12GB SLC cache, what would be your guess for the 2TB version of SLC cache? 24GB right?

Problem is, when I tested my SN570 2TB acquired recently, the SLC cache (empty drive) is 900GB. SN750 2TB writes at above 3000MB/s for 900GB. So, the question is, could there also be a newer SN570 1TB which has a similar change like the 2TB one? At 2TB, there is no contest. Current version of SN570 2TB beats NV2 2TB in sustained write even when running in PCIe gen 3 (and let NV2 runs at PCIe gen 4) mode.

Then, there is the danger of getting QLC and in that case, the sustained write is most certainly below SN570. Also, it is not very obvious, but the review you are quoting the numbers for NV2 from did show NV2 1TB had to do SLC cache recovery once the SSD is filled above 80% and the sustained write in that phase dropped by half yet again (so 300MB/s).

        • Hmm I understand your meaning re: the NV2 dynamic cache. I never thought about it before but rather than the sustained write dropping after 800GB written which was my initial interpretation (and therefore not worth mentioning because who writes 800GB of files regularly), your view that it dropped after 800GB stored does seem more logical, and therefore a much bigger reason against buying the NV2.

Which sort of software is the lowest impact to use for a sustained write test to check for a dynamic cache?

          • +1

@tekisei: The 3 most common ones:

            • AIDA64 (not free), relatively easy to use, write test DOES wipe the entire drive. Trial version may not run long enough to get to the point where SLC cache runs out.
            • HDTune Pro (also not free), write test DOES wipe the entire drive. Default mode is bad / wrong, and the app is dated. It appears to use zero fill test, so you can get wrong results (especially on Phison PCIe gen 4 controllers - which cheat in zero fill big time). Do not use this to test Phison E21 based SSDs (one of my NV2's has Phison E21, zero fill write test, E21 does not need to use SLC cache and you see some unreal result). E21 doesn't appear to actually wipe all the cells in zero fill test.
            • IOMeter, free but isn't straightforward to use. Tom's Hardware uses it (coz. it is more accurate). Doesn't do a complete drive wipe (which is good).

Lowest impact, well, IOMeter when used correctly, does have a low impact. The other two, you could stop when you noticed SLC cache runs out, rather than go through the whole test. Problem with NV2 (and a lot of SSDs for that matter) is that to get to the forced SLC recovery phase, you have to fill the drive above 80%, which isn't exactly low impact (most people are not comfortable doing that much write to a fresh SSD right away).

      • Tx. Yea I never do large transfers.. going to use the 1tb for my game drive and keep my 5p0gb as my OS.

@tekisei, Cheapest option available is actually $95 C&C

    Scorptec is an eligible retailer.

    • lol rip when I checked earlier today Scorptec was $109 haha

Hopefully not many people feeling the loss - for most locations, Scorptec's price delivered is worse than the other retailers.

  • Looks like m.2 SSD from quite a few different brands hit the historical low recently. Not sure if it's better to grabe it now or wait for it to drop more later

  • Why "rip msy?" What happened to them?

    • MSY got bought out by Umart.

      • Oooooh! really! How interesting!

        • Check out their website, does it remind you of Umart's website? And check the address at the bottom of the MSY website lol

          • @tekisei: Wow Umart pulled one ought of i……. ..

  • I received my 2TB SN570 from the Amazon UK deal below around mid January. Item as described and packaged correctly. Busy with family since then, but hoping to install this weekend.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747338

FYI visual specs from drive before installing:
    WDS200t3B0C
    R/N MCBSM9

    • That was a good deal. As I mentioned, that SSD has a very aggressive SLC cache (basically it writes in SLC mode close to the full drive). The advantage is you get 900GB of write at >3000MB/s initially. Obviously, for non-empty drive, that SLC cache is smaller. The down side of the approach is that it has to be quite aggressive in SLC cache recovery afterwards (drops to around 400MB/s write).

  • seeing this "& from select Australian IT Resellers with ABNs" at the very bottom of the promotion page. Is it possible for Amazon to be eligible too?

  • any good for ps5 digitial?

  • SSDs have come a long way! My Samsung 850 only has sequential read of 500 MB. Would upgrading show a noticeable improvement for gaming, ie, load times?

EDIT: Seems an upgrade isn't worth it after watching LTT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DKLA7w9eeA

      Crucial P3 1TB $94.90 delivered - QLC, 220TBW, PCIe 3.0, dynamic cache - sustained write speed is 100MB/s after 275GB is stored
Crucial P3 Plus 1TB $105 delivered - QLC, 220TBW, PCIe 4.0, dynamic cache - sustained write speed is 100MB/s after 275GB is stored

As per netsurfer's explaination, the testing actually shows sustained write speed tanking after 550GB is stored, but that's for the 2TB version. For 1TB, dynamic cache is naturally halved.

So basically P3/P3 Plus mostly has the same write speed as a 7200RPM HDD after a quarter of the drive is filled up, and has 2.7x less durability than the SN570.

      • So how can they market something as a fast SSD if it doesn't perform better then a HDD after a quarter is filled up? That's insane.

        • +2

Their first disclaimer at the bottom of the advertising material states "Fresh out-of-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command.".

So they quote empty drive speeds, and encourage users to test only with an empty drive, meanwhile most reviewers don't do sustained write tests to fill up the drive. Techpowerup and Tom's Hardware are probably the two most promenent sites which actually do sustained write tests.

        • +1

If you don't fill the SSD up in one go, in most cases, there is sufficient time for most SSDs to complete SLC recovery.

          • QLC SSDs tend to have more aggressive SLC cache recovery (which is good and bad). The good part is that if you write in smaller chucks over a long period of time (days or weeks), then you may not feel the issue.
          • Reads are still pretty good and that generally matters.
          • Like most TLC SSDs, most QLC SSDs cannot employ SLC cache once the SSD is filled above 80%, for most QLC SSDs, that's when the slow write is quite noticeable.
          • The latest gen Intel QLC NAND flash appears to improve quite a lot (not the Crucial ones though, at least not yet). Intel did sell its SSD division to SK Hynix.

So, if you use QLC SSD smartly, you can get about 27% SLC for a while (do bear in mind as the SSD is filled, 27% of remaining gets smaller each time) until about 80% full. Problem is, most review sites don't tell you the SLC recovery time (Tom's Hardware normally does, but you need to read the review to get that info).

          • @netsurfer: So really, best to go with the SN570 over the Crucial P3!?

            • +1

@Justin9mm: Yes, the main issue is Crucial blocked / disabled PCIe gen 4 x4 support for P3. With Phison E21 controller, you do need PCIe gen 4 x4. At PCIe gen 3 x4, it could be at best neck and neck with SN570. However, WD has put TLC in the product description on SN570. QLC for P3 is not ideal (unless the price is really cheap).

As for the more aggressive SLC cache in Crucial P3, even if that's the case (I really need to test the recent batch of SN570), you really need to restrict your copying so you don't reach the QLC write mode. Once the SSD is filled to 80%, SLC cache is not going to be employed in write for P3 (and quite likely SN570).

With the $20 e-gift card, I just don't really see the need to go for Crucial P3.
