I've been on the lookout for a cheap 13 - 14 inch 8th gen laptop after missing previous deals.

To me this ticks all the boxes, is a great price and was too good not to share:

Elitebook - business grade build
1080p
i5-8350U - Win 11 compatible
8GB ram - but appears upgradable to 32GB
1 Year warranty - many other refurb sellers provide a lot shorter period

        Who knows?

No mention of it in title or description.

    • SFEB15 (for non-eBay Plus members)?

        where did you see that?

@kogi: That link isn't in this deal post though.

How are people supposed to know?

@jv: Agreed, but cut the L plater some slack

                  • @schwifty: How has jv’s comments stopped you from contributing any deals in nearly 8 years?

                    • +1

@PainToad: It hasn't I've tried several times when I do find something but I'm usually beaten to the punch. I also don't spend my entire life online looking for deals sorry.

                • @jv: But have they (@fatlikeyamum)

            • @jv: The problem is you did know, but acted obtusely instead, dragging it out over multiple comments.

    Post updated with further details.

  • This or t480/480s?

    • T480 for $300?

    • I would have bought a t480s over this but there appeared no chance of getting one near $300.

      • I already bought this HP. Look similar to T480s, not sure about the screen nits though, hopefully it's not too bad.

  • 220 nits?

    • Good catch, that is on the low side.

      • Low for what? Use on the train?
        Too bright for an office.

        • It will very much depend on the particular situation, but the quality of the picture degrades as the ambient light or light reflecting off the screen increases.

  • +4

the amount of bloated batteries from G5s from my work is crazy.
most of our G3s outlasted G5s by far

    • It's because you guys always have it plugged into the docking station 24/7. So it stayed charged even though it's fully charged. That's not good for the battery.

      • +1

You would think by now there'd be some kind of battery optimisation hardware or inbuilt software that completely prevents a battery from being charged past 80 or 90% and drained past 15 or 20%

        • +1

Uh … that is what they do now.

What we call 100% is simply the level they are designed to be charged to, typically 4.2V/cell. You could keep going and charge it more, but life would be reduced.
Similarly, 0% is defined as the lowest safe level. You could choose a narrower range, and get more years at the expense of weight/capacity.

If a large number of G5s are failing early, it could be a number of things. Poor thermal management. Or over-charging. Maybe they are constantly alternating between top-up and drain while plugged in?

        • I had one of these for work, there is a BIOS setting where you can limit the charge to 80%

  • it is touchscreen or is that the g6?

  • +1

What's the screen res? Item description unhelpfully doesn't seem to refer to it?

    • +1

It's a 1080p screen resolution. I've checked other sellers like Kogan and Catch and they are selling it around $500 for a grade A refurbished. So this is a good price.

  • Battery health?

    • Guaranteed minimum 80%

Not sure if that's high enough, any experts care to chime in?

      • Hmmm.. Mine was only 64.3%.. I guess I should send it back..

  • What does Microsoft certified refurbished mean?

I buy Mac refurbs regularly but seems far sketchier in the Windows OEM world.

  • Damn looks like it is out of stock

    • Looks like they've put more up for sale.
Shows $298.14 for me (eb+) and more than 10 in stock.

  • We had these at work up until about 6 months ago.
Great little device and at ~$300 in this deal, amazing!
Ran Windows 10, O365 and a stack of corporate stuff without issue.

  • 8GB Ram…..

    • 40 bucks for another 8gb stick

      • How do you upgrade the ram? Don't see options.

    • You can upgrade it to 32gig ram via it's two RAM slots.

Takes all of 3 minutes to do for even those with a Reddit level IQ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2jzW2-wdI4

Just unscrew about 10 screws on the laptop, remove the back lid, unclip the old ram, push in the new ram in it's place & screw the lid back on. Easier than building a 5 years old's Lego set. Done.

    • I’m hoping it’s a single stick and I can just chuck in another 8Gb 2400/3200mhz stick (looks like it supports 2400 max but 3200 is cheaper on Amazon)

  • **These are back in stock

  • Back in stock. 7 remaining.

  • How do you upgrade ram? Don't see options.

    • Yourself, I'm assuming. Laptop have a very varying degree of difficulty in the skill required to DIY. Sometimes it's a single screw and clip in the new RAM module, sometimes it's removing the whole damn keyboard and 20 screws (or worse). Perhaps check some YouTube videos on this specific model.

Would this work with a HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock (got that with 2 screens attached)?

  • OOS

  • Anyone received theirs yet? or at least had it sent/received a tracking number?

    • +1

Just received mine, lots of small scratches, looks well used.

Not turning on and not charging either.

      ETA Charging now

      • How's about the screen? Are they too dim ?

    • Just got mine. Its in very very good condition, just some minor light scratchs near one of the ports. The rest of the body is perfect. Looks like my battery is flat also.

Also mine came with a SIM slot which is an additional extra, so a very nice surprise.

Screen seems average, not in a bad way. But my Lenovo Legion is signficantly better.

For me, this laptop will be used for data centre work, travel and out and about.

      • Edit, I just noticed on right corner of the laptop is dented. Not worried

  • Still waiting here… was expecting it at the latest today as it's advertised as express post. Not good to hear it's 'well used', some really good feedback on condition of other products sold.

    • I think it's luck of the draw. You might get one that looks brand new

Mine also has faint marks on the screen which don't come off, so I'll be returning it if I can

      • I finally got mine…. The laptop body is okay the but the screen is pretty scratched with horizontal marks and a weird dot pattern: https://imgur.com/a/dOttoEv

I've started the return request via ebay. I don't mind light scratches on the body, but it's very distracting on the screen. :(

    • Mine was meant to be delivered yesterday (startrack / austpost really need to lift their game) but hopefully today…. I'm getting worried about the condition of it now!

      • +1

….. And startrack have now delivered it to the wrong house and are currently trying to track it down again. Lovely.

I have been looking around for a couple of small upgrades to this box..

Tiny USB storage device to double local storage…
    [SanDisk 256GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - SDCZ430-256G-G46] - $35.25
    [SanDisk 128GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - SDCZ430-256G-G46] - $20.49
    [SanDisk 64GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - SDCZ430-256G-G46] - $10

    Increase RAM[
    Crucial CT8G4SFS824A 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2400MHz CL17 1.2V Single Ranked Single Stick Notebook Laptop Memory, Green] - $38.75
    [Crucial CT16G4SFD824A 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2400MHz CL17 Single Stick Notebook Laptop Memory RAM, Green] - $69

    • Would the ram make much of a difference for running windows apps, like office?

      • +1

yea, Chrome and office are pretty RAM-demanding 16GB total would be ideal

Because low quantity they won't let me post as a separate deal. I think this refurb HP Chromebook is pretty good deal. 11th gen i7, 16gb ram and 128gb ssd for ~$466. You could just install Windows afterwards.

An equivalent Windows HP laptop from the same store is about 1k

  • Received mine. Looking really good with only a small dent in the top cover that is not showing on the lcd. Also found the a sim slot on mine.
I did have 3 BSODs though, with one during the setup of Windows 10. Had to do a full system restore to get back up and running.
Updating Windows 10 to the latest and greatest version, 22H2 to see if that solves the blue screens.

    • what is your battery health ? I got mine today, look good, battery health is below 80% sadly.

      • Where do you check this easily. Tried a few things but cannot see a % yet.

        • download hwinfo..

          mine is 64.3% life only…
with a slightly scrtached up screen…
The body itself is in excellent condition though!!

          sigh…

          probably needs to go back…

          not having much luck..

    • Doesn't want to update, but found the likely issue being a bad mem module. Running Windows Memory Diagnostics shows that something is wrong and I need to contact the manufacturer. Tested with another dimm and error is gone. Will raise a case in ebay :|

      • Seller shipped replacement ram. Everything up and running now!

  • I ended up sending mine back due to the damage on the screen. They didn't want to refund but wanted to send a replacement instead…. which I was fine with as I did want a cheap working laptop.

The replacement is in good shape this time (no damage to the screen), so I installed another 8Gb stick and did a clean Windows 11 Pro install (it's activated).

Unfortunately it appears that the battery is DEAD. I don't think they test these laptops at all.

The laptop will charge up fully, it can be used OK for a little while on battery (and the % will slowly increase) - let's say I use it until it hits 75% battery charge left. If I turn the laptop off, then come back later in the day - it won't turn back on. I plug it in, turn it on, and Windows says it has 0% so it recharges itself again.

I know that whenever you purchase a cheap second hand laptop you should factor in a new battery, but geez this "Minimum 80% battery life" on the ebay page is a total farce.

    EDIT:

    HWiNFO shows for the battery:

    Designed Capacity: 50012mW
    Full Charged Capacity: 12740mW
    Wear Level: 74.5%

    Ouch!
