11.4 channels out of 3 physical speaker enclosures! That has to be 80% virtualisation!

    • +7

      Not quite.

The rear speakers have a front firing speaker, side firing speaker and up firing speaker.

I believe it's similar for the bar itself.

      • +1

Yeah but the sound is coming from the same place. It's not like the sound wave travels 1 meter, and THEN decides to go to your ear.

        • +7

All sound bars work the same, which is to bounce sound off of your environment to achieve surround sound.

    • +2

According to the specification, this unit has 22 speakers.

      • Yea that's insane hey, just all virtualised. Not even physical stereo. It's really just one physical channel at the front, two at the rear, and the rest are all virtualised.

        • +5

In the future you’ll just buy a single small speaker and they’ll say it’s 25.1ch.

  • +10

These are bloody good for the price, and i'm fairly fussy about audio.
Great for 4k streaming and dolby atmos (CCwGTV plugged directly into the soundbar).

Paid $1,099, got my price protection claim approved with 28 degrees for $839.60 last time.
They were great for $1100 though as the retail was ~$2k.

    • +2

is the rear wireless? just need power?

      • Yep just power. Same as the sub :)

        • tempting but i dont know if i need lol

          • +3

@SS625: i think you want to need it

          • +1

@SS625: no brainer at this price.. just sell whatever you got (I sold a Q70T near new to fund at least half of it).

Not worth spending more than 1k on something like this IMO, great when RRP is $2k.
Mild improvements with better models wouldn't be light and day..
Ps. other setups are still superior for music so i only use for TV / streaming.

            • @G-rig: i got this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/399902, got random popping sound (once every like 30mins)

              sound great but not surround

              • +1

@SS625: The 950A would be heaps better I'd say mate.
The atmos surrounds and sub are quite good clear enough at night time too that you don't need it too loud even.

                • @G-rig: thats not helping me not buying it

                  • @SS625: Maybe obviously a 2k atmos setup would be better than that one, what do you think..

          • @SS625: I know what you mean, I'm like hmm would it fit in my tiny studio lol.

            • @trustnoone: Yeah got to weigh up everything, it's pretty long soundbar, could put the sub anywhere

          • @SS625: You must be new

    • Why connected directly into the soundbar instead of into the tv? any advantage to this?

      • +1

ATMOS support. you need a TV with eARC if you want the soundbar to get ATMOS from the ccwgtv or even your tv inbuilt netflix app..

        • Nah, I plugged the Google TV into HDMI input which is the good thing about this model.
          My TV doesn't have atmos;)

        • I have an LG CX and an Amazon Fire 4K stick and stream from that. What would be the best set up for me to stream ATMOS?
          I also have a pS5 which I use as a bluray player

    • Just sold my Marantz PM7000N for $1500 cash, so might get this actually. Just need to sell my B&W bookshelf speakers and REL sub.

      • Could keep those, I use Yamaha monitors and sub for music, and the soundbar for movies/streaming..
My mate has some dyn bookshelves and has been taking about REL subs.

    • Paid $1,099, got my price protection claim approved with 28 degrees for $839.60 last time.

      How does that work?

    • How do you compare this to an actual, say 5.1 speaker setup?

      What was your previous setup?

Thanks, been curious to know how these compare.

      • Used to (and still have Denon recivers and Magnat vector needle speakers (good German brand, 4x standing,a centre & sub) which were great back in the day, too much effort and cost setting all that up these days and the AV receivers go out of date pretty fast (before Dolby Atmos, would have been DTS or 7.1 etc).

Obviously the front separation would be better with separate speakers but soundbars are convenient and simple (no mass of wires and cables), especially with the wireless (signal) for the Sub+Atmos rears (which are excellent). So no complaints at all for the price, better than most soundbar setups <$2k, plenty for my apartment.

It's just easier without all the wires/cables and would still be spending a lot more on decent amp+speakers. Depends on what you want, i'd still get some other speakers as well for 2ch music but a lot of people would still use it for music without any complaints.

    Q990B or bust

    • +1

      I agree.

I had the 950 briefly before returning it with Samsung's (fair but excruciatingly slow returns policy).

The 990 makes the 950 sound tinny.

Both had very impressive sound stages and dome like sounds though.

      • +1

oh so wait for a 990 deal?

    • +3

      Q990c or bust

    • +5

Agree, I have both, 990b in lounge and 950a in study, 990b is a significant upgrade.

      • +1

Plus the placement of the screen on it.. Nonsensical on the top on the Q950b

      • Significant? It's just the new model and pretty similar in the scheme of things. Would prefer the screen on the front as well to be honest by the Q950a for $840 is a steal anyway (and have had mine for a bit under a year).

Neither are the best for music anyway, I got separate streamer - DAC & active monitors for that.

The main thing is a few physical changes (screen on the top, non-fabric (which I also would have preferred), but very similar overall and people would be happy either. The 990 is apparently a bit more user friendly out of the box and gets on with more TV brands (May have issues supporting 5.1 pcm content with lg TVs, and Dolby Atmos content when in Passthrough mode).

I've got a non Atmos tv and use a CCwGTV plugged directly into the soundbar HDMI input, so it's not even an issue (and much better interface/experience than the EKO's android TV etc. I don't even use the FTA).

      a nut ?

  • I bought the 930, was pretty impressed, and for roughly the same price. I can only imagine the extra immersion on this guy

      Running with Samsung TV?

I have Sony and I am a bit reluctant.

      • I'm running with a Sony X90H and the Q990B and have constant sync issues
For the first few months it was fine, but I'm guessing one of the two devices had a firmware update so the sound is always delayed
I found switching the TV to use the built-in speakers then back to the soundbar solves it most of the time

This is using eArc, and when it's working the atmos is great

        • I have A80J and don't have sync issues.
but what i find is i need to use the Samsung remote to adjust the volume as when i use the Sony TV remove it works the first few times but then doesn't adjust the volume any more. Its quite annoying but now i have just learnt to use the Samsung remote for volume.

What i would suggest also trying is adjust the codec used for the audio out, from memory there are like 3 options, PCL, and 2 Dolby ones.
Don't use PCL as it wont push ATMOS to the soundbar but the other 2 should.

          • @mujen1: I have the same issue, what I have found to work around this is to leave a pause when changing volume (so pressing individually each time rather than holding it down). This eliminates the issue for me so I can continue to use the Sony remote on my Samsung soundbar

        • I‘m using JBL bar 9.1. Always running into no sound issue. The only fix is to turn off eARC, then works fine. I'm thinking it's sony TV's issue..

        • Occasionally I have eARC issues where it just doesn't turn on the soundbar. Quick power cycle of the TV fixes it 100% of the time - I think its a Sony issue

          • @Sherro: I've got a Q900A and was having issues with eARC with my new S95B either dropping out or not even being detected. Swapping out the HDMI cable that came with the soundbar for a proper HDMI 2.1 cable from Amazon resolved the problem.

      • Yeah with a samsung. Even together they get out of sync, have to power cycle the whole thing

        • @tdonovic hey mate i have some questions regarding q930b can u shoot a message

      • +1

I use with a Samsung tv, it's not worth it.

The Q Symphony mode that uses the soundbar and the tv speakers together sounds worse imo because you can clearly tell the tv speakers stand out having a much lower sound quality.

      • I have the older Q900's with rear speakers and a Sony Bravia.
No issues other than you won't see volume on the screen when its on eARC - think its to do with the different numbers each use for volume display.

  • if someone have the budget, Nakamichi Dragon will be the best to get.
