  • @GYB Accor coming at anything more than 10% ?

  • +2

If there's an option to reserve and pay later will the cashback still be honoured at 12.5% after the stay?

    • Would like to know this too. Can anyone confirm?

      • In my experience the cashback still gets paid against the "book now and pay at hotel" bookings

        • -2

I can confirm this too. Did it on both ShopBack and Cashrewards and only paid at the hotel.

Both cashback providers were tracked with the correct amount, showed as pending initially and turned confirmed after a set amount of days after your stay

          • @BargainsGrabber: Thanks for the support neggers. If you still don’t believe it, here was my recent trip booked via Cashrewards and paid at the property. Cashback has already turned approved. Only reason I went with Cashrewards over ShopBack at that time because CR had a higher cashback rate

If you don’t really want the help from others to inform based on their past experience, I’m happy to not provide mine next time. I rather not help and instead of getting insulted by the negs when it’s true

    • Just confirmed it tracked

      • +1

Yeah part of the reason why the Cashback is paid after the stay date, pay-on-stay is fine for Cashback tracking. Enjoy your stay mate!

        • Is the reverse possible? I have a number of unpaid reservations for the year, is there any way I could apply this cashback to those?

  • +18

Make sure you still compare final prices before and after activating cashback, as the price 100% changes (upwards) whenever I've tried it when these promo's run - so the savings may not be as large as expected

    • +1

Plus actually ringing the hotel themselves to check on prices. Sometimes they offer way cheaper prices than booking 🫤 their mark up is sometimes astronomical

    • -1

Worth noting as well that booking sites are sometimes known for price changes for popular listings as prices can change for venues/places that are searched often. Definitely recommend searching on a separate device beforehand if you're going to. Logging into your Booking.com account can also help with the Genius discount as well, just to help make sure you're getting the best price.

  • @gyb can you confirm that going through the cashback promotion will not be offset by increased final prices as opposed to just booking directly through their website?

    • +2

How can they confirm that? They're not Booking.com and the individual hotels. Some choose to be shady and others not. The ones I book every fortnight never price jack after cashback and it stacks with the Genius discount too.

    • Most will, some won't. I usually have both up (SB on phone and Booking.com on PC) just to check the price differences on the same property and check whether they are jacked.

  • I know this is a long shot, but what if I go through https://www.booking.com/VisaAU and activate the ShopBack plugin on chrome?

    • Yeah nah, unfortunately not I'm afraid, our Cashback works when the merchant attributes the purchase to us, so if you click through another link (even like a Google ad listing) will interrupt the tracking. It could still track, but is at risk of being invalidated later, so I'd avoid if you're banking on the Cashback.

I booked some hotels on the weekend with booking.com. Ended up booking them without using cashback. There were discounts applied when not using cashback (about 10%), but when using cashback those were removed so I ended up with a higher price even after cashback.

I second what was said above. Definitely check to see whether this gets you a better deal. I suspect it might end up being 2.5% cheaper rather than 12.5% cheaper as the standard booking.com "discount" is 10%.

  • Tip. Recently booked a few different places. Luckily checked on the app and found that in most cases the prices on the app were much less and marked "mobile price"

    • +1

You can actually stack mobile price + Cashback if you book using the ShopBack + booking.com app together ;)

    • +14

I concur. I have made numerous booking recently and found that CashRewards and Shopback prices were increased substantially compared to non cashback prices, it appears the cashback % / $ is simply added to the price to give the impression you are making a big saving.

My recommendation is to use Expedia, the prices don't change even when using Shopback or Cashrewards and many of the places on Booking.com are also on Expedia. Wait for upsize for maximum discounts, recently CR had 12%.

      • +1

I'm pretty sure I had the same issue with Expedia as well

      • +2

Totally agree with this as well, I was booking Japan a little while ago off the back of a cashback bump and found that booking.com pushed the prices up. Expedia did not at all.

      • Sounds like a scam that should be reported to the ACCC.

  • +6

    "absolutely wild Cashback rate"

    exaggeration much?

    • +1

Yep agree, Cashrewards recently did so many 10-15% cashback deals on Booking.com..

  • So I have a current booking but they didn’t charge my card yet, assume they will do it closer to the date. So if I cancel this and then make the booking again to get this 12.5% cash back, will it still work if my card doesn’t get charged until date of checkin?

    • +2

Yes it should work, cashback is based on time of reservation and not on time of payment. Beware though, I consider Cashrewards/Shopback on Booking.com a total scam. Refer to my comments below.

  • +21

I have downvoted this because I consider it false and misleading. I would like to give fair warning to others.

I have made a dozen bookings recently and found that CashRewards and Shopback prices were increased substantially compared to non cashback prices in every booking, it appears the cashback % / $ is simply added to the price to give the impression you are making a big saving.

My experience may be unique but I doubt it. Please do a comparison yourself before committing.

My recommendation is to use Expedia, the prices don't change even when using Shopback or Cashrewards and many of the places on Booking.com are also on Expedia. Wait for upsize for maximum discounts, recently CR had 12%.

    • +2

      Agoda is pretty good too

      • Agreed

    • +1

Nah mate, your experience is far from unique. Wife travels around Aus for work a few times p/m, and it's very rare we even bother checking through cashback sites now.
And going through these type of deals also means you can't get extra rewards from sites like Hotels.com. 🤦‍♂️

      • While you do not get the extra rewards (e.g. Hotels.com) - you’d get AgodaCash and Genius loyalty savings from Booking.com

  • +2

Currently in dispute with Shopback regarding Wotif who advertised for 13.5%. Was tracked and never processed. Next day reverted to 5%, raised claim and honoured for 5%. So sneaky…

    • +1

Hey mate, happy to take a look at this for you to help get to the bottom of it, shoot me a DM and I'll take a look!

      • Highly saitisfied with the dispute resolution result. Resolved quickly and swiftly, thank you.

  • +1

Does the stay have to be by 31 March 2023 like it says on the website?

I just made a booking in May through the link but it didn't get registered.

  • 100% concur that for the recent 10% cashback from shopback/booking.com all that happened was the prices were increased by 10% when using cashback.

Is rep @gotyourback going to comment on this?

    • +2

Hey mate, I've offered a bit of an explainer here as well as some tips from my end to make sure you're getting the best prices while you compare.

To confirm, Booking.com and all booking sites are responsible for the pricing on site and ShopBack have no influence on this, and there are a few reasons for the price changes, often it's to do with the cookies in play.

      • Appreciate the reply - I always check things out and shop around (and I do rate Shopback as a longterm user) so just wanted to check if it was something you were aware of or could discuss with booking.com and other merchants as it does leave a bit of a sour taste.

      • Surely as a partner of these companies, you can provide feedback that there’s clearly price-jacking going on (e.g. I search a hotel on Booking.com vs. I click through Booking.com via ShopBack = higher prices generally) and therefore it’s clearly misleading advertising to say “earn X cash-back” as X depends on subsequent mark-ups. Very dishonest practice!

  • +5

Agree prices change depending on which website you are 'referred' from.

I have also seen that often the cheapest price is not found by searching directly on Expedia, Agoda, etc., it is found by going through a price comparison website first, eg. Tripadvisor->Agoda or Google->Expedia. Makes sense as these booking sites may feel that they have to present a sharper price to the comparison websites otherwise no one will click through.

It is a gigantic PITA and waste of so much time to make 4-5 searches in different incognito browsers to deal with all the differential pricing these days! Hotel website direct, aggregator website, booking website, cashback into booking website, a phone call to price match etc.. Then you also have to do the math on 5%, 10%, 15% cashbacks, reward schemes from the booking websites, reliability of cashback tracking, foreign transaction fees even in AUD (expedia.com.au you can use a points earning card, booking.com or agoda are foreign so you have to use 28 degrees…)

Honestly, if I am within 5-10% of the best possible price I am satisfied, time is worth more these days…

    • +1

You forget to mention also having to compare mobile prices vs non-mobile prices!

I have had good success recently using Tripadvisor—->Agoda, and the discount was more generous than Tripadvisor—>Booking. I found Agoda's prices to be more variable across platforms/methods compared with Booking.

And from my experience last year in Europe (several countries), there was no "price jacking" in prices on Booking/Agoda by going through cashback providers. I have a suspicion that there might be a geographic element to it. But maybe I didn't nail the process after 2+ years of closed borders.

  • they jack up the price if you use shopback. e.g. a hotel in tokyo. without shopback, the price is $1696, with click-through it becomes $1844. still $82 cheaper( which is 4.5%), but definitely not 12.5%

  • +4

Prices are higher after going to the webpage via cash back link! Fake deal

    • Not for me. My usual hotel doesn't jack.

  • +2

Can confirm what everyone is saying. THe prices are higher compared to rest.

    This is $401

    https://www.booking.com/hotel/sg/lyf-farrer-park-singapore.e…

Same hotel for same dates is $358 on Expedia:

    https://www.expedia.com.au/Singapore-Hotels-Lyf-Farrer-Park-…

That seems to be 12% higher
So, no need to rush to make booking :).

So, what is a good hotel booking site?

    • +1

As I hinted above, I think there is a regional element to this "price jacking" pattern. Seems more prevalent for Asian locations/hotels - I have observed it in Malaysia,Singapore, Thailand. Didn't observe it in Europe, I remember plugging in a few random dates and hotels for the US and don't recall seeing it there either. Things might have changed more recently.YMMV and all that.

  • Hi,

    It varied hotels to hotels.

I booked the first hotel via Hotels.com but it is HALF the price on Booking.com

But for the second hotel, it is still cheaper on Hotels.com/Expedia ($286) to compare with Booking.com ($342, expecting CB $41, and it even charged my CC in Japanese Yen) :(

so do check various websites for price comparison ..

I'm annoyed that Booking.com charged my CC in FX currency :(

    • Unfortunately its pretty standard that the booking website charges in the local currency of where ever you're booking. Also note that AIRBNB does this also.
I always use my 28degrees or ing card to avoid the fx fees.

  • As others have said just make sure to check the price on your chosen accommodation isn't jacked once you click through cashback. My most recent one wasn't but on a previous trip it basically amounted to getting my own money back months later in the difference.

Oh and whilst I doubt it stacks if you have access vouchers are 9% off on redeem your gift card.

  • 2 Nights outside of Sydney with Expedia $834.

    Shopback with booking.com $1134

  • Found the last time they did predict Jack the last time I booked. They are fooling people who would think they were saving some good money.

  • Booked 5 hotels today. 3 same price across platforms, 1 more expensive but still cheaper with SB, and another I booked on another platform. Thanks SB and GYB
