        • Think ANZ x 2, Citibank x 2, Qantas Premier, Virgin Flyer, Westpac, NAB, HSBC, St George, Commbank

          Etc etc

          • @endolphin: So, happy to pay the $400ish fees and dont wait for 'specials' ?

          • @endolphin: Some cards have like a 12 to 18 months period down time isnt it.

            • @Justbuy: Most are 12 months. That's probably why my average is 10 per year, not 12. E.g. Can smash an ANZ rewards card every ~14 months, including the ~2 months that the card is actually open.

Per the above question, most annual fees were $99 or less. Last year only one was more, Qantas Premier, $199.

              • @endolphin: Most min spends these days seem to be 5-6k! You're putting 60k on CC a year? Must be for a business! LOL

                • @[Deactivated]: "most"? No. Average is maybe around $3k. Sadly, all personal spending, but I do put ALL spending through a cc.

              • @endolphin: Were you able to get a pro-rata for the Qantas Premier?

                • @nightelves: Yes, got back $150 as I only had the card open for 3 months.

  • Does anyone know if we need to wait for the physical card to arrive to activate before being able to spend? I am overseas for an extended period of time so looking for a credit card that allows for activation via an app and I just use Apple Pay or something in store.

    • Yes. You need physical card to activate.

    • +1

There is a method to activate it before the physical card arrives: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13441921/redir

    • I was away when my card arrived, I asked my daughter open the letter and over the phone she gave me the numbers needed to activate it and I popped it on my phone to use. … easy.

  • Applied and got conditionally approved. Have submitted documents. Much easier process than ANZ.

Interesting that they are interested in my loan amounts but don't care about the amounts in my offset accounts that cancel out about half of the loans.

Heading overseas next month so the higher points for international spend, good exchange rate and fee free and free travel insurance are attractive.

Will re-assess how long i keep it for when i get back from overseas and collect the bonus points.

    • +1

Went back into NetBank and my application has now been declined. Given they only asked about my liabilities and didn't care for the money in my offset accounts, i am not surprised. Anyway, pretty rubbish experience that there was no communication before they did it and the only way i found out was by me going into NetBank.

Will strike CBA off my short list for when i refinance my home loans next year once the fixed rates expire.

  • How long does it take to get approval?

Applied 3 days ago, submitted documents and yet to hear back.

    • Same here mate - submitted docs on 6th and nothing yet. I’m heading overseas in 2 weeks. Hoping it arrives before!!

      • Go back into NetBank and you can see the status of it.

    • System says "It may take up to 5 business days for us to check and confirm all details of the documents you provided."

      • I just checked on commbank and application status says completed now. Looks like they have reviewed mine so hopefully same case for everyone else

  • +1

Hoping someone can shed some light here.

I was pre-approved for $17k based on the income and expenses I quoted in the application. I uploaded the income verification documents for same amounts.

Though the application is still in "Progress" after 4 days of lodgement, the limit has been decreased to $1500 and the card name now displays as Award card on the application progress.

    Here is the comparison
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/82858/102269/screensho…

How can CBA change the card type and the credit limit without even discussing with me?

    • Oh man, that’s pretty shit move by CommBank. Can you call up and complain to have that reverse?

    • Hey, they did this to me too. Find it so sneaky and considering switching banks now.

    • Any update/resolution on your situation?

      • Card was received with $1600 limit.

The complaint is now in progress and case officer assigned.

        • +1

          Update

CBA has honoured full 70k points and i dont to spend any amount to meet eligibility criteria.

          • @Ash-Say: Seems like a decent outcome! Did they also give you the correct card - Ultimate Awards w $17k limit?

            • @quislor: I still have $1600 limit card.

I haven't used a single cent on this card. I will close it once I receive the points and move to the next card.

              • @Ash-Say: Pretty good deal LOL

                • @[Deactivated]: They also offered me extra $200 for inconvenience. I closed the card couple of days ago and they also agreed to waive $89 annual and qantas membership fee.

                  Very good outcome indeed!

  • Got my card, activated it and spent about $1.2k on the 7th. A few days later, it seems I’ve already been issued a statement. Notice in netbank said that monthly fee was waived. Seems like I’ll have to restart the 2.5k monthly spend counter again. That is annoying.

  • For those who have closed the card now, did you have to make $2500 min spend for the month you closed it also to avoid $35 fee?

    • I’m wondering this also

      • +1

Just checked my account and got stung by the monthly fee :S

If your statement for the month is less than $2500, it will be charged.

        • Thanks, made $2500 txn just to be sure

  • Where do you opt-in for the Qantas points in the rewards app? I couldn't find it

    • +1

During the application, it asks you to enter your qantas number if you want to opt in, else it defaults to Commbank rewards if left blank

      • Thanks for your quick reply!

      • If i opt-in to Qantas points after already spending about 1k, will those count towards Qantas points as well?

  • Is everyone opting for Qantas points or commbank rewards? I say I fly interstate maybe once or twice a year - value wise what would be better?

    • What about internationally? Your Qantas Points will not expire as long as you earn or use Qantas Points at least once every 18 months so it is good to keep around.

The qantas wellbeing app means I get points weekly just for walking around with my phone.

      • Thanks mate I do travel quite a bit internationally but didn't see any flights for sale on the QFF website. I will opt in for it :)

        • how do you opt in to it?

          • @xtommyk: Called the awards number after 2 days of anctivation and sorted.

  • Anyone know if it’s possible to transfer any accrued points to Velocity to take advantage of this 15% bonus offer after you have received the 70,000 Qantas points?https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/760756

Do you need to opt out of the current Qantas Awards program or can you just do a one off transfer of any points in your account?

  • For those that have the Qantas card, does yours say Qantas anywhere? I can’t find any mention of it on the physical card or in online banking. Also, how do I know that I have successfully activated the bonus offer?

    • +1

It won't show on the card or the account. You should see a $30 QFF activation fee come through within a week of activating the card though

      • Amazing thanks mate

  • Applied and approved. Pretty painless process. Waiting on card.

    • Applied 9 business days ago. Supplied all docs, no response yet. Was conditionally approved.

      • Update - application status on netbank is showing as complete, but when clicking on it doesn't show the outcome, but instead redirects to another page - "Your application is complete and your new credit card account can be accessed from your NetBank home page"
but on going back to netbank there is no new CC account to be seen. Classic CBA!!!

        • It takes a few days to load the approval details then you have to wait for the card to arrive.

  • Can't seem to access the awards site as I'm stuck in a loop.
When I click login, it brings me to commbank's site, I click on my credit card, awards, then it brings me to the same award site which asks for a login again.
    Anyone else have this issue?

    • Disable adblocker

      • I've tried disabling and on another browser, still the same :/

    • +1

Probably sorted by now but it takes 2 days after receiving the card to see award points and the store

      • Yup all good now, that's good to know though! Thanks!

  • Has anyone been instantly approved with this card? Or is it all conditionally approved pending docs verification?

    • I’ve banked with CBA for ages and when I went to apply I saw a message that I was already conditionally approved. It indicated a limit and when I went to click to apply It had details of my income prefilled (my income goes into this account). Even then I still had to provide info and it took a few days.

      • What info did they request?

        • Details about other loans I had.

  • Funny how this has so many more upvotes than the past 3 previous deal which posted the exact same thing. One of the previous deals even only had 18 upvotes and 5 downvotes.

    • Must be my natural charm

    • +1

I've been churning cards for ~2 years or so. Most of the other cards have promo here and there and then either the spending goes back or reward goes down. Sometimes even both.

Commbank rewards have been steady at this spend/reward as you have said. The kicker for this particular deal is this comment with a 'hack' to avoid the $35 monthly fee without meeting the $2500 spend.

This deal was also posted at the right time as a lot of other people just finished churning through the other cards and looking for a new one to get.

  • When it says ‘Offer not available on all other card types, existing cards, and switches from other card types and is not available to customers ..’

Does this include other bank credit cards? Or was it just referring to CBA ‘award’ cards?

    • +1

      Refers to CBA cards

  • This card or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black? ANZ fee is quite expensive, but better Qantas points than CBA

  • 5000 spend, not sure if I can manage that in 3 months or not

  • +2

spent 5k+ in the first month, got the qantas point in the second month statement.
    Much quicker than I thought.

  • If i'm a secondary card holder for a CBA awards card, am i excluded from this deal ?

  • -2

    This deal got better.

Will be getting 70k points without spending a cent and also goodwill $200 credit.

  • These guys are a joke. 3 weeks waiting to get my card after providing all the relevant info and they turn around and say i need to apply again due to a stuff up on their end.

  • I’ve received my bonus points after the first statement cycle. No waiting for months as others have indicated.

  • Free travel insurance and no international fees. Perfect card for 4 weeks in Europe!

  • Applied, conditionally approved for 17k, reduced the request to 6k and submitted my documents. Received unsuccessful application outcome after 5 days! I've got no credit cards at the moment. I have raised a complaint with them. Be careful not to hit your credit score with their stupid assessment system!

    • Is there a reason you applied for 17k and then requested for it to be reduced when you sent the documents?

I feel like all the banks want you to spend above your means by providing large credit limits and hope you only payback the minimum each month to make bank on your interest. A higher credit limit allows them to do that especially for those big spenders.

      • I didn’t apply for 17k, it was automatically offerred

        • Check my comments - You may also get lucky!

          • @Ash-Say: His case was different, got rejected vs approved for lower tier card are 2 totally different scenarios.

  • -1

    What's the minimum credit limit?

  • Anyone had any issues adding this card to Google Pay? I was approved on 20/04/2023 and activated it via Commbank App on 21/04 as per this guy's method (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13441921/redir) and everything seems to be working I'm able to pay for stuff have swapped over all my subscriptions no issues but when I try and add the card to Google Pay it all works fine till I get to the "Bank has to verify you" stage. I have chosen to verify via the Commbank App and everytime I hit the "Verify" button in the app, I get an error saying they're having trouble verifying me, and when I have chosen to verify via SMS to my registered phone number I dont receive any text message at all.

    • Same here, I get the same error as you. I've given up and will close the account once the points land. Haven't had this issue adding to GPay with any other bank before.

      • Did you try again at a later date? I have a feeling there's something wrong on Commbank's end - I just tried adding the same card to my Apple Pay wallet on my work phone and I'm running into the same issue where I can't be verified for some reason. Would be good if anyone else has gone through the same issue and got some sort of resolution/explanation from Commbank?

    • Just an update on this, apparently it's a Google issue - I spoke to Commbank today and they confirmed that everytime I have attempted to verify myself in the app they have been approving the verification so they suspect Google for some reason has been blocking the verification. Now Google has blocked my card number so will need to reach out to their team to get them to unblock it to try and add it again to GPay and finally verify my card lol. Very frustrating but at the very least Commbank has their Tap and Go that I can use to continue to make NFC payments on my Android

  • Anyone know if I use beemit to pay ato over 5K and it satisfies the criteria for spending limit to get bonus points?

    • Would also like to know this!

    • It should work since Beemit turns up as a purchase on my CBA card - CBA automatically classifies all my Beemit payments into the "Shopping" category. I've paid council rates and water bills via Beemit and can confirm that I'm earning points and therefore I suspect contributing to the min spend criteria for bonus points.

  • 5k spend done, statement produced and bonus points received. time to cancel. thanks CBA

    • What are you churning to next 🙂

      • +1

        Slim picks atm
But I’ve gone with the bank SA

  • Does anyone know if an online Apple Gift Card will count toward the early bonus points?

Also, some comments are saying 70k Qantas points give you $700 worth of points compared to 100k Award points. Is this by cashing out an equivalent gift card or is it $700 worth of flights? Sorry if this was a dumb question.

    • +2

Qantas points are generally valued at 1c per point as this is the price you could potentially sell for on the classified.
If you are redeeming for upgrades, you may get more value out of them, if you are redeeming for gift cards you will get less value. So overall the 70K points = $700 is really just a middle ground there.

If you are not interested in collecting points and using them to redeem flights/upgrades I would just go for the award points and get some gift cards.

      • Thanks!

What about the first part of my question? would you know anything about that?

        • +1

Yup buying gift cards will definitely count towards spend

  • Does anyone know if the travel insurance applies to secondary card holders as well?

    Cheers!

  • I was trying to add to Google Wallet with this trick but it failed to add - it just said need contact your bank. Has anyone managed success add to your digital wallet this way?

    • I didn't need any tricks. I was able to get it working in my g wallet, but my gf had some issues at the beginning. Not sure if you just have to give it a bit more time after activating it on CBA app or have to also make a payment with the card to get it to google wallet.
