For those of you wondering why you might want to use a VPN from Google, one reason is security, which unfortunately isn't always compatible with privacy. This article recommends using a VPN to protect yourself from GSM attacks:

    https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/how-to-protect-from-pegasus-s…

Gmail was one of the first email providers to support U2F 2FA via hardware keys like Yubikey with their Advanced Protection Programme for whistleblowers and journalists.

You could roll your own wireguard VPN, but if you already use Gmail for the above mentioned security and rely on their location sharing so family and friends can find you if something happens, then using their VPN is convenient and not much of a stretch. I consider the likelihood of them implementing a proper VPN on their own phone high.

Protonmail also now supports U2F (they didn't when I was looking), but since the Optus and Medibank breaches, if you do become a victim of fraud, I can't help but wonder whether banks would be more inclined to give your money back if you use a "well-known" provider like Gmail as opposed to more obscure privacy-conscious options.

never trust Kaspersky. Just saying. Google is evil but less so I suppose ;)

Yeah, but how do you actually use it?

Somehow I have a 100GB Google One plan wth my Google Workspace Business Starter, which gives me the extra storage but the Google One app says to switch to my personal account, which I don't have (technically the Workspace account has been my personal email account since 2007).

  • Just activated VPN on 100GB plan

This is like handing over your house keys to a thief for safe guarding.

  • I don't see much use for this, it still seems certain linux websites are still blocked when on the VPN

  • Can't seem to be able to choose servers.
Getting a vpn from Google is like getting a diet plan from McDonald's

  • No china, no deal.
