    Oh fantastic.
Buy Google one on turkey VPN, get a VPN access

    • +1

Can't see the vpn option on my turkey account, guess will have to wait a few more days

      • +15

have one an can confirm, you won't get VPN.

        • I’m sure it will come, just a matter of time.
Between my lifetime getflix, PrivateVPN and free wind scribe… got plenty of options for now

        • Does Google Turkey has Workspace premium?

          • +1

@akula: the only "benefit" that shows up is the advanced photo editing.

Edit: oh I just got your question, no I have not looked at if their office apps go premium. I can check tho.

        • +5

Any of the family member accounts in Australian that aren't the Turkish account should get it. I did it via the steps I added in the main Google One post, and have access to the VPN.

        • I use Turkey and have the VPN?

    • +71

I thought the whole idea of getting a VPN is to protect yourself from google.

      • +4

        😋 shhhhh…

        • +9

I've had Google VPN for a while and don't use it because I don't trust them.

    • +4

Kill two turkeys with one stone

    • Yeah not that simple, process doesn't work, Google is smarter than that with their One subscription. Furthermore, those that do get it to work are stuck with a Turkey Google account for the entire family for at least one year. The only way you can do it is by adding in a new account from scratch and have them as a non-leader family member (if you can even get the turkey prices to show up). Most people just get a free subscription anyway from all the rewards credits :)

  • +3

Australia is in the list of supported VPN countries but Turkey is not. Not sure if this feature will be region locked based on the purchasing country?

    • @I Smell Pennies might tell us more on that.

      • +2

as I replied above, have one an can confirm, you won't get VPN.

I actually reached out to Google about that and they did say I don't see the VPN due to my payment location/method.

        • +1

Yeah I was checking as well and come to this [google support page] (https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/7582172?hl=en&co…) as extracted below:

Where VPN by Google One is available
VPN by Google One is available in select countries or regions, and is included for eligible Google One members. This feature is available in these locations:

          Austria
          Australia
          Belgium
          Canada
          Denmark
          Finland
          France
          Germany
          Iceland
          Ireland
          Italy
          Japan
          Mexico
          Netherlands
          Norway
          South Korea
          Spain
          Sweden
          Switzerland
          Taiwan
          United Kingdom
          United States
If you have VPN by Google One turned on and your country or region is listed above, VPN by Google One still works when you travel to other countries or regions.

          • +1

@X-BoY: yeah, what I thought would happen was because I was physically located in Australia, it would show up.

But apparently the services provided are based on region. I wonder if this means they are storing my data at a different place than otherwise too.

          • @X-BoY:

VPN by Google One still works when you travel to other countries or regions

            except china.

list of supported countries when travelling

            • @uncoelite: Why not China?

It is exactly where VPN is essential to be able to access Google

              • @FatTofu: google search results seem to indicate google vpn doesn't work in china. not exactly sure why, but i assume either because it's a google service going to google ips, or it uses a common vpn protocol that might be blocked in china.

either way google doesn't list china as a supported country when travelling (as per link)

                • @uncoelite: I think VPN in China is not allowed by law and purposely Google services are what they have been avoided for years

That's how China kept their kids from outsiders for at least 10 years. Even iPhone has to have a China version App Store

                • @uncoelite: I personally tested Surfshark and Nord works in China but you need multiple trial of different servers.
Best option to access Internet in China is $20 for 10GB roaming data from Optus prepaid. No VPN needed and easy to buy.

                  • +1

@gstfree: The data is still being routed through China and all the government equipment. Just because your using data from your Optus account doesn’t change that.

              • @FatTofu: Google doesn't work in China, all google related products are completely useless there.

    • +14

Google figures if your region is Turkey you already have a VPN

  • +44

To save people checking, this VPN is only for protecting your online activity. You can't select which region you connect to.

    • +77

So, a company that makes money using your internet activity is now offering a "secure" way for you to navigate the web?

    • +5

Surely they're still harvesting your data and protecting you from other companies harvesting.

Or is this legit Google providing a privacy service? Either way I won't be using it though.

    • +1

this VPN is only for protecting your online activity.

      from anyone except google ;)

  • Thanks OP. Does anyone have experience of how this vpn performs? Speed reductions, sites blocking it etc?

    • +3

Slow for me so I don't use it.

  • Well that makes paying $25 per year worth it

Wonder if google vpn works on streaming sites

    • +10

No, you don't get to pick and choose your location so its no good for trying to circumvent region locked content.

  • +2

The VPN isn’t actually good right? I mean you can even select the country you want to connect to. If you want to select which country to connect to then best use a dedicated service, otherwise aside from the storage option, I don’t understand why you’d get this deal with google one.

  • +50

Using VPN service from a largest collector of personal information on the planet sounds a bit ironic.

    • +22

Buying a VPN from Google is like buying a gym membership from McDonald's

      • +12

Well that's just not true. The best VPN providers are independently audited to prove that they don't create any logs or identifiable data - they don't have any data that they can actually sell. Even if you pay for a dedicated IP, they use a token based system so they can't see which user has each IP.

And they aren't audited by dodgy firms either, I believe PIA was audited by Deloitte recently for theirs

        • -6

They sell the meta data, they don't care about identifiables.

Can you name one legitimate use case for where a VPN is remotely useful outside region lockouts?

Is everyone here working for Wikileaks?

          • +5

@jaimex2: Do you also shake your fist at clouds and complain about envelopes?

            "wHAt aRe YoU HiDinG?!?"

        • Well, here's a pretty interesting video that talks about the matter. https://youtu.be/XVPfyO0c_b4

  • +2

I am on the basic plan. My Google One app says I need to upgrade to premium plan. How to I activate VPN?

    • +1

      Upgrade Now, Think Later

    • +1

If you are already on the basic plan at some point VPN should appear in your account. It was just announced, so I don't know how long it will take them to implement the changes.

      • -1

May be it is only available for US accounts.

        • On the au website writes

          One membership to get
          more out of Google
Cloud storage and device backup, VPN and more keep your digital life safe and secure.
          From $2.49

          So AU it's included

  • I have google one via Turkey, I confirm i can use google one vpn in Australia.

But its not great as it doesn't let u select a country or do much

  • +4

Weird, I have Australian google one but it says VPN is only available for 2TB plan and above.

    • It will take them some time to implement the changes

  • +1

A lot of people are under the impression this will work to allow you to unlock region specific content, this vpn service does not let you choose the country so its no good for streaming services.

    • Ah good to know. Thanks.

  • +9

Anyone who's concerned about their online privacy won't be using a VPN from Google….

I was at a security event where a representative from one of Australia's intelligence agencies was giving a talk about online privacy and his only suggestion for a secure VPN was Mullvad. One of the reasons was because you don't give any information over when you sign up. You can even post a cash-filled envelope to them for your subscription.

    • What if the cash-filled envelope get lost or Mullvad say that they did not receive it ? how to prove it and would that also be some sort of tracking its for your account?

      • +3

You pretend you are in the 1980s or 90s cause that's how we survived back then.

      • +1

That is the entire point of the cash filled envelope. No one has any way to know if it was ever sent or received.

    • +1

You can use a gift card purchased with cash too

  • +12

Trusting Google to respect anyones privacy is absurd as their whole business model is based around monetising user data.

One use case I can think of for the Google One VPN is for increasing security (but not privacy) when using an unsecured wireless connection, such as the free WIFI at many airports, hotels and parks etc.

I guess it could also be used on a work network which allows BYOD to stop the workplace network administrators from snooping on your online activities.

If you already have a dedicated VPN service which you trust (within reason), then I can see little benefit.

  • As per my knowledge, yes it is vpn but you cannot select location. Do your research and proceed.

  • +5

Hey contacted Google and they replied : “ If members who are on 2 TB plans claim to have bought 2 TB for the VPN benefit only, you may offer eligible members an appeasement. Learn more about eligibility and how to offer an appeasement.
From March 8–20, 2023, if members with 100 GB and 200 GB plans ask why they don't have VPN by Google One yet, inform them that VPN features are still in roll out.
During the March 8–20, 2023 roll out, members might find VPN in their profile but be unable to use the feature. Inform users that while the VPN feature rolls out, there may be a one-day delay between when the feature appears in their profile and when it’s available to use.”

    • +4

this sounds like the customer support script directly written to the customer instead of them changing?? why is that?

      • +1

        Exactly.
        Copy Paste FTW!

        • TIL Google actually has support.

      • +3

Yes the guy literally copy pasted what direction their team got !!!

    • I want to learn more about getting an appeasement from Google!

  • +3

Google VPN? I take it the P doesnt stand for "Private", at least not when it comes to Google.🤢🤮

  • +3

and why would you ever want to use a google vpn

  • +3

you'd have to be dumb as (profanity) to use this, honestly

  • Does anyone know what protocol(s) Google VPN support?

  • Oops, I'm already on the 2TB plan. Didn't realise I had this haha. Thanks OP!

  • For those who have Google play gift cards, perhaps use it with caution. Somehow, after I enabled this VPN, Google thought I was outside Australia and it rejected my gift cards. After hours of chats and many of back and forth with Google support, finally it worked again.

I initially thought when this VPN is enabled, I'll still be accessing from within Australia. But maybe that's not how it works

  • +1

the mozilla vpn sounds interesting because you can have your firefox tabs a different ip address. super cool. google vpn? most people are fed up and want to stay away from google these days. ivpn and mullvad are great because they accept monero. google vpn is more data sucking from you to them.

  • +2

    Google VPN 🤣

  • +1

Isn't the whole point of VPN is to anonymize yourself. What's the point of buying one from Google. This is just going to make them track you more precisely.

  • Would be good as a backup vpn. Shame it's not available right now. I could use it in the next week.

  • I have the 2TB storage for backups. Never used Google Workspace Premium - should I check it out??

  • +1

Do you think I could use the VPN to purchase Google premium via a cheaper country?

  • Thanks op works for me I’m on the 200gb plan through Australia

  • In Apple iOS you can enable iCloud Private Relay in settings.

  • Looks like a good deal but I don't trust Google.
I used VPN to avoid Google tracking.
    LOL.

  • Does the Google VPN support P2P?

  • +2

Being Google, will it be truly private for Web browsing etc?

    • I guess it has a purpose on public wifi to stop some sniffing there.

But on your own network or cellular Google is no better and maybe worse than the ISP logging your metadata.

    • +1

Absolutely not. You gotta be kidding me if you are going to trust your data with google

  • If you sign up to a higher Google One account (>200GB) that is eligible for the cashback, can the cashback be applied immediately to Google Store purchases or is there a waiting period?

    • Immediately but you need to stay on the same plan until the cashback lands from memory.

  • +2

Google and VPN. That is a BIG BIG NO. Close tab

  • Mine is still requesting me to upgrade to $12.49 per month premium plan. I am already paying for basic in Australia annual.

Guess they haven't gotten to mine yet

Starting today, and rolling out over the next few weeks, Google is expanding VPN access to all Google One plans, including the Basic plan

  • so anyone with the turkey google accounts, do you also have trouble installing and searching for play apps? some apps i can't find or it gives me turkish results

    any solution?

  • +3

Google and Privacy together in same sentence is oxymoron

  • VPN is not yet active for 100 gb plan, as just checked I'm on 100gb google one plan since Oct 2021 n for VPN asking to upgrade to 1TB plan
