Woke up to a price drop email from my business account… An unreal deal for an X1 Extreme Gen 5. First time it's been sub $2k! Must be clearing stock for the imminent announcement of the Gen 6. Usually averages around $2.5k-$3k.

Perfect for someone wanting a sub $2k high quality laptop with a bit of grunt behind it!

      Apologies! haven't finished my coffee…

  • +2

Video card a bit of a led down

    • +8

Screen a bit led down too, 60Hz……

      16.0" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 300 nits, 60Hz, LED Backlight

      • +4

It's definitely not designed to be a gaming laptop primarily, however yes the base model screen is worse compared to the previous gen 4 which had this one - 16" WQXGA (2560x1600) IPS 400nits Anti-glare, 100% sRGB.

Granted that, never saw the Gen 4 go sub $2k even on clearance.

      • At least it's 100% sRGB for a change. Too many of their options are only 45%.

  • +16

Seems like sad specs for the price.

    • +8

Will never beat a gaming laptop for the equivalent price. ThinkPads are more about build quality. And having a higher spec'd version his model. I can say it's way more portable and lighter than expected for a laptop this size, with the bonus it can do a little bit of gaming on the side.

      • I had the 3rd gen of these . Yeah they are thin and light but that comes with poor thermals and battery. MacBooks these are not .

    • +1

Yeah, the "RRP" at Lenovo has got ridiculous over the last couple of years.

Of course this then leads to the delusion that this is a massive discount that in reality is only what you should be paying for the machine.

  • Don't forget Cashrewards 11% cashback

Code isn’t listed on CR, doubt it’ll get any cashback tracked/confirmed

    • +1

      Thanks. Have updated original post.

    • Anyone with connections at Cashrewards want to work on them to add it to the approved codes? :)

  • +1

It's actually pretty tempting. I am currently using the original X1 Extreme as my main development machine (i5-8300H, 32GB, GTX 1050 Ti) that I bought 4 years ago. Great laptop to work on, and everything still runs well.

  • +6

Surely RRP is a giant joke.

    • +2

Oh it definitely is. Usually website price averages around $2.5k

    • Check out the P1 gen 5 it's the exact same laptop but with different graphics and they had the rrrp at $6000 😂

  • +5

RRP $4839, it must be a military grade indestructable laptop.

    • +2

      Tim Apple takes notes…

      • Can't see Apple going for those military contracts, but who knows? I believe Panasonic and maybe Dell are the main players in the rugged mil-spec laptop space these days.

      • They dont need to say "its a military grade indestructable laptop" to charge like a wounded bull.

        They just say because 'Courage'

Them bam. Another grand or two added to the price.

    • They really aren't. The hinge snapped and went through my screen on mine..

  • There is no mention of the weight of this laptop even in Lenovo's website

    • Tech specs -> View all tech specs 'Weight - around 1.88kg'.

For me, the mouse nipple has always been an almighty deal breaker on the thinkpad series. Yet they still flaunt it in the promo video. I wonder if anyone actually uses and likes it? I've found every one of these I've ever used, the tracking starts wandering around the screen on its own, without even touching the thing. Have they gotten any better in recent times? Last one I owned was an e560 in 2016.

    • +3

We have 140+ ThinkPads from 2018 onwards in our fleet and I've never had an issue or complaint from a staff member about the red nipple going haywire. Personally I don't use it a great deal but have never had an issue with it while typing etc.

      • i use to use it a tiny bit on the odd occasion i needed to move mouse ever so slightly, it was useful vs the trackpad. anytime you move to use the trackpad, try using the nipple instead and see what you think

      • Incredible! I must have a ghost finger 👻 that stays attached at the nipple when my hands move away from the keeb…

Ir maybe they genuinely made them/trackpoint software better since 2016. It wouldn't have been hard! I used to physically remove the red cursor and the ghost motion would still occur. Ended up disabling in hardware/device manager.

    • +6

For me, not having the nipple between G & H would have been a deal break. For many that's their preferred pointing device. However it's not exclusive on ThinkPad either. Many business laptops (Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, Toshiba Tecra) have them as well, usually in different colours than red.

      • +1

I don't think Latitudes from 2021 onwards have pointing sticks and physically mouse buttons anymore unfortunately.

      • +1

Agreed. I think it's a habit/what they use from the start that gets people to love or hate it.
We had to get thinkpads back in high school (before BYOD was a thing) and only ever used the nipple. I bought a thinkpad for uni exclusively because I wanted it. And now, more than 10 years after graduation, I've been given a thinkpad for work, and it amazes people that I use the nipple.
Though the mouse drift is still present though, but not as frequent or annoying as previous generations

    • +1

I've used several Thinkpads for work over the years and I've never had an issue with it. Never used a lowly E Series though. :-) T or X Series only.

Do people use and like the TrackPoint? I'd guess that not that many people use it, but the people who do swear by it.

      • Hey, I was saving a buck OK!? I thought that's what we're all about 😂

Weirdly, I used to use the trackpoint mouse buttons with the trackpad. Loved their tactility! But I think what we can all agree on here is that I'm clearly the odd one out so 🤷‍♂️ 😁

        • +1

You oddball. Just kidding i got use to using that on my thinkpad x31

    • +3

One of the main reasons I stick with Thinkpads for personal use is that nipple. I've had occasional mis-tracking in one or two over the years, but nothing that has been deal breaking. You can just disable it if it's a problem and default to the trackpad. I've disabled my trackpad instead.

    • +1

Personally I love tweaking that nipple. If you don't like touching nipples just leave it alone

      • +1

So what about that red nub on the laptop. What you think of it?

        /s

    • +1

I wonder if anyone actually uses and likes it?

Yes, I use it. In fact, I would prefer a laptop without a trackpad than one without a TrackPoint.

  • That RRP can’t be right..

  • -2

$1596 for Dell model at fairly similar spec(after Cashreward 6% and 5% coupon code AUAFFILIATES5)

only difference (Lenovo have bigger battery & Graphic)

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/vostro-7620-lap…

Dell seems to be selling at everyday price now, with realistic RRP on dell.com

    • Yes but that model Dell is currently showing as out of stock.

    • ThinkPad X1 Extreme's Dell equivalent would be Latitude 75xx series which would be a lot more expensive.

    • +1

The Vostro is more like a business orientated Inspiron, you can't really compare it the X1 Extreme which is built much better and comes with better warranty to boot (premier is next business day service when parts are in stock, and its for 2 years not 1 of basic onsite service). That warranty alone is expensive, when I asked Dell for a quote on extending it after purchase, they quoted me $300/yr.

If you're not used to comparing business laptops, it's like the difference between the previous Acer Nitro 5 generation vs paying more for a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro or even more for a Razer Blade 15 Advanced.

Dell knows all about unrealistic RRPs, my XPS 17 9720 has similar specs (12700H, 32GB of RAM, 3060) and its RRP at one point was over $6000, even now on "clearance" its RRP is $4148 which absolutely no-one pays either.

  • No way that RRP is real

    • Its lenovos own website. I get it if it was a reseller.

Though I agree it is ridiculous.

  • +1

How does this compare to ThinkBook 16p gen3 not taking price into consideration?

    • I've also been wondering this too!
      ThinkBook 16p has a higher resolution (2560x1600 > 1920 x 1200) and brighter (400 nits > 300 nits) display, both Anti-Glare
plus better GPU (RTX 3060 6GB > RTX 3050 Ti 4GB) - but not sure by how much better.
and also is AMD > Intel - but again not sure the difference today.
ThinkBook is just slightly heavier than this X1E.

Unfortunately only the X1E with RTX 3060 and above GPU models have vapor chamber - so not this deal. ThinkBook 16p doesn't have as far as I can tell.

I'm thinking ThinkBook 16p gen3 will go on sale mid this year once the gen4 comes out.

  • Does anyone have any experience with Thinkpad P-series? I've only ever used T-series and X-series. I want a big screen laptop so this X1 is very tempting. The keyboard with numberpad on the P-series also looks good though…

    example: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadp/thinkpad-p16s-(16-inch-intel)/21bt002uau

    • +1

We have a couple of them in our fleet as well. They're not too bad but if not having the numberpad isn't a dealbreaker get the X1. The P series linked has a worse screen and the battery in it sucks. One of our guys uses an Intel one and says battery is lucky to last 3 hours. P series AMD models have a much bigger battery but no real deals on them at the moment.

    • +3

P16s are just T16 with faster CPU (28W i7-1270P vs 15W equivalent on T16) and dedicated GPU. Similar chase + same IO. Current P16s sale makes it no brainer to pick it over T16. However X1 Extreme here is a different built with much faster CPU (45W i7-12700H), faster RAM (DDR5-4800) and faster GPU (RTX 3050 Ti).

Also personally I much prefer non-numpad keyboards on laptops.

      • True…with numpad typing would be off centre from the screen, which is weird.

    • Thanks @zonearhd and @scotty. Appreciate the feedback.

    • Thin and lightweight but poor thermals and battery.

  • The RRP is an absolute joke. Specs are mediocre for this price point

    • +1

To be fair , 1.9kg is pretty good for 16" with 45w cpu + rtx3050Ti + 90Wh battery , on sturdy chassis build.

Putting build quality aside, i usually gauge the spec together with how light it is, to determine its value at the price point.

Agree that RRP should be ignored from consideration on how much fake discount bargain you're getting.

  • +3

Confirmation from Cashreward of $214.39 for the laptop.

    • Thanks

  • guessing the gen 6 coming out very soon probably going to be a whole new design

  • +1

Which CPU is better these days ? Rtzen 7 or i7?

    • debatable, but ryzen for more battery life

  • -6

Neg because of the silly RRP trying to make this look like a deal. This laptop better be made of hyperweave to make these specs look even slightly attractive for $2k.

  • -4

Can get a new mac book for less and with better specs…. geeeeeez

  • i bought thinkbook 16p gen2 at 1299 pretty happy.
