  • Seems prices are dropping fast !

    • I know, Not sure if I should hold out another week or not

  • Any with 7mm thick for ultrabook?

    • If you're looking for a drive for your S3, grab the 128GB Samsung 830 SSD. It's 7mm in height. High performance and reliability comparable to the Intel drives.

My S3 is positively rocketing along now!

  • wonder whats the deal on shipping? is it inclusive?

    • +2

Shipping is extra I believe, About $19.80 Aus wide

  • $69 + approx $19.8 to NSW sort of kills it. If someone could find a free shipping coupon it'd be a good deal

  • +3

It's good if you can pickup but shipping to my Sydney says it's $19.80

MSY has these for $79 as well. So it's cheaper if you have the time to go in store.

  • +4

OCZ Octane deals on OzBargain$110 for 128GB merely 2 months ago. They surely drop fast!

  • +2

depends, its only sata 2, about 1/2 the speed of the sata3 SSDs

    • +5

it only matters on a sata 3 system, if it not sata 3 then who cares

    • +36

OMG YOU CAPS LOCK KEY GOT STUCK TOO!!

    • +4

      By that logic…

      1/7 = 1/4

      22/7 = 22/4

      π = 5.5

        corollary:
        1/7 = 1/4

        weekend = every second day.

      CAPS LOCK FURYYYY!!!!!!!!!

  • +1

As noted, great deal if you can pick up instore!

FWIW, my two Octanes are powering on…they have really given my old SATA2 machines a new lease on life! :)

  • It was $89 2 weeks ago

  • Online Exclusive Offer… seems like different price instore and no pickup options for online checkout.

$8.25 shipping for Vic Metro & Geelong Areas

  • +32

    Hi everyone,
We changed the shipping to $9 Australia Wide.
Also pick up is available in Sunshine, Hawthorn and Clayton Store.
Other store will available later due to the transit delay.
    Thanks.

    • Can we purchase online for instore pickup?

    • +1

      +1 for this! thanks

      • +5

Please direct call the local store for reserve and pickup service

    • I'll order once I can pick up from the Whitehorse Road store…

      • Nunawading will receive stock later due to the transit delay

        • Thanks for the reply.

Just called Nunawading and they say they can't give me the $69 price because it's an online offer, they don't have stock and if they order from Sunshine for me it'll be $79.

Can I order from the website and specify pickup from Nunawading?

        • Sorry this feature isn't available. In-store purchases must be done in-store.

        • You guys really need to fix this up because I got f#@ked over when you had the clearance sale not too long ago.

Called in to reserve an item, the guy took my phone number and told me to come in on the day?

When I arrived in store I was told stock wasn't available for purchase. One of the salesman even lied to me that he would have the item for me if I came in the next day. Came the next day and it wasn't available.

edit: OK so I see the post below stating that you will fix this issue up by making sure all deals are communicated to stores. Hopefully this never happens again. I'm still quite hesitant on going to Centrecom for another PC build as I have done in the past.

    • +1

Just called Hawthorn Store for reserve and pickup service and they say they can't give me the $69 offer… the staff said it's ONLINE EXCLUSIVE OFFER

      • +4

We have already resolved this issue. A little bit of miscommunication but we've sorted it now. Thanks for letting us know.

        • So Nunawanding should give $69 for instore pickup?

    • You have saved us from so many QED theories.

    • I just rang Sunshine store and spoke to Brendon(?!) asking him to put one aside for me to pick up today. He said to me that this is an "Online Special ONLY". Have told him about Centrecom Rep on here advising peoples that they could arrange order to be picked up at "Sunshine, Hawthorn and Clayton Store" but he wasn't seem to be aware of this. Is this also a miscommunication?

      • Now the deal is marked as expired?!

        • Yes, someone reported it as Sold out. Webpage states it is sold out. Do the physical stores have stock? Don't know.

        • When I rang, Brenden (?!) confirmed to me on the phone, there are plenty in stock ;) But never mind, I won't fall for Centrecom bargain again.

  • Great response to feedback Rep.

  • +15

at least you don't have to 'like' Centrecom on Facebag to get this offer. +1 for that!

  • If I have a Eee PC with Sata 2 then this drive is perfect correct? But if I get one with sata 3 will it perform better in my Eee Pc that has sata 2 over a sata 2 SSD?

Also will a Sata 2 SSD be way better then my current normal Hard Drive?

    • +4

If I have a Eee PC with Sata 2 then this drive is perfect correct? Yes

But if I get one with sata 3 will it perform better in my Eee Pc that has sata 2 over a sata 2 SSD? No

Also will a Sata 2 SSD be way better then my current normal Hard Drive? Yes

      • +1

        Thanks

    • Depends what your expectations are. You will definitely get more iops and less seek time. Boot time will be quicker, program load time will be quicker, random read/writes will be quicker. If you are just browsing the web, you probably will not notice much difference.

      • Just want things to run faster, programs booting up, multi tasking

      • +1

Not to mention other benefits of SSD — they are silent, and less likely to kill the drive if you throw your netbook around a lot…

        • … although still more likely to die overall (my octane is going strong though, fingers crossed and backups running).

  • Really weird how Centrecom removed HDDs and SDDs from their web site's categories list on the left. Their complete price list is missing SSDs too.

I remember they had this Octane 128GB S2 for $79 a few days ago.

  • +9

Just a heads-up to Mac users, this drive is currently incompatible with OS X Mountain Lion. Currently using one in my late-2008 aluminium Macbook, and it will no longer boot.

OCZ is working on a fix, but stay away for now if you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion:

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10370…

There is a workaround, but it hasn't been successful for all users:

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10352…

    • Thanks for the heads-up, was thinking of getting this for my MacBook.

      • Must say however that it worked perfectly fine when I was using Lion. Also, using the workaround to make it boot into Mountain Lion, the performance is noticeably better than the previous standard HDD. So don't be too put-off if you're happy to stick with Lion for now! :)

        • Just checked, my antiquated Macbook will only run Snow Leopard anyways so I'll get it if I can get it for $69. My local Centrecom store is unwilling to match the online price ATM.

    • -1

      That is why I don't have a Mac :)

  • +3

This is very slow for a SSD but cheap and it shows how far we have come with storage tech

good drives now have 500mb/s read 450mb/s write.

    • Yeah and? whats your point exactly? these things are perfect for boot drives for netbooks and media centers where raw IOP's arent needed.

      • Is this a good sata 2 drive speed? I know sata 3 is faster but going by some reading I have been doing some brands are faster then others. So how does this compare to other sata 2 drives?

    • They have always had these "budget" SSDs. Usual price is 89$ (which it is not worth. You would pay the extra and get a proper SSD). Maybe for 69$ and you have PC with only Sata2, or perhaps RAID 2 of them?

  • +1

    What? Background Garbage Collection Support.

I am not buying it if it tries to collect my hidden collection.

  • +4

Please don't buy OCZ ssd guy's PLEASE ! the only reason they a cheap as chips is because of how horrible and unreliable OCZ ssd's are. If anything save your self and get an crucial !

    • +1

lol i have both crucial in multiple desktops and OCZ in a laptop - funny you mention get crucial because today i updated my firmware for crucial to the newest version 000F and well lets just say couple of blue screens later and i quickly switched back to the old firmware, no issue's at all with my OCZ so far .. :) Sometimes is the luck of the draw with SSD's …

OCZ unfortunately seem to come up with failed drives more often than others but you get what you pay for sometimes and if they do work they seem to be just fine…

    • +5

but it says MTBF: 1,250,000 hours which is like 142 years between failures

…oh, now I see, the catch is that the first failure happens 3 days after you bought it, then it takes 142 years before you're ready to buy another one and then it fails after 3 days…

      • +1

a better count for reliability for SSDs then MTBF is TBW (Terrabytes written), which is something like 80TB for good consumer drives @ 120gb

        These, I'm not so sure

    • My experience with SSDs;

Intel 520 in laptop was not a happy chappy, BSOD that got worse and worse, couldn't even install windows in the end (despite working the first time)

Sandisk Extreme something, worked straight away

    • Good point.

At these prices, though… I bought one last sale, and it's worked fine in my old SATA2 laptop.

If you can't fit into 64GB and don't have the extra $50 for the 128 crucial or intel, this is your cheap ticket to SSD land, just backup every day (a good idea anyway).

    • I've had a OCZ Vertex 2 60GB that 'apparently' had huge reliability problems.. yet I ran it for over 2.5 years in my gaming PC. 2 weeks ago I upgraded to a 128GB Samsung 830 and will soon put the OCZ into my HTPC to replace a really old and noisy 250GB HDD that I had laying around from god knows how long ago.

People only generally complain when they have a problem with a drive, not when everything is going fine with it. People will always be more vocal the more problems they have, which can make it seem like there are a LOT of issues with things (basically, a mountain out of a molehill).

      Trav

  • +1

Nice price Centre Com - very happy with my OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS from you guys and this is a great deal!

  • +7

may want to think twice before purchasing this particular model of OCZ SSD, failure rate is pretty high. I got two of them last time when it was 89 dollars, and both of them have now failed and all the data is gone. Not very good.

Have a read of the feedback on Newegg on this particular drive.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227…

    • -2

People take newegg reviews seriously? lol

      • +4

        Why wouldn't they?
        Enlighten us Copie?

Newegg users are people who have purchased the drive.

        • Consider yourself enlightened bro: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2150430

Never use a retailer's feedback as your sole source of information…

        • never use forums as your sole source of information… :P

        • +1

@grapedrink Because Newegg, much like ebay/heatware etc encourages bad feedback, regardless its well known that Neweggs packaging is very sub par, meaning alot of product gets damaged in transit.

At least with Forums they tend to be tech users, and not some idiot.

        • +2

so a retailer encourages customers to put in bad feedback on products they sell.. i see .. guess its nothing to do with the fact that what they are using failed after 3 months of use and seems to be a reoccurring theme for the product amongst as u put it all the idiots that purchased a product … must have been the packaging indeed.

You fail to think about the fact that many who read the reviews also have a brain and think about the circumstances of the feedback and also take into account a the reoccurring messages that are within those feedbacks…

no its not a good idea to read just retailers sites but its also not a good idea to read one forum about a topic … in the end people aren't as stupid as you think they are.

        • -3

@scud, if you apply some common sense (which unfortunately is not so 'common' anymore), you wouldn't use ANYTHING as a sole source of info for purchases…you guys need to educate yourselves & stop perpetuating old wives tails you read on da interwebz!

We're happy to hear from those with real personal experience with these drives, but just parroting what you've read on Newegg is utterly pointless. ;)

        • Incorrect.

Newegg contains reviews from REGISTERED users. This means you are receiving feedback from an unbiased source. This is the most accurate source of reviews you can possibly get reviews from!

My proof? Check the reviews on almost any other SSD that is not OCZ and you'll find newegg does not 'encourage' bad feedback, they encourage HONEST feedback.

What would you prefer? A couple of 'tech users' (which isn't even a real term) providing their review or reviews from many unbiased customers who may or may not be 'tech users'?

          You decide.

        • -3

Go to any US based forum (Hard, Anandtech,Overclockers,Xtreme Systems and so on, and EVERYONE on there will tell you that newegg reviews and feedback are full of shit. Same with amazon and bestbuy, you take that feedback with a very large grain of salt as well.

        • +2

I think the reason some people have issues with these newegg reviews is that some of the comments are not objective (and can be quite biased). If you read some of the negative reviews on newegg for Intel 550 and Crucial m4, you could argue that based on those reviews, avoid those drives (coz. you could get one that will DOA).

Basically, the issue is newegg reviews are not good indicators generally. However, in this particular case, it might not actually be a bad thing (at least it warns people).

In short, most people have no issue hearing "A lot of Octane S2 SSDs have reliability issues if you check the reviews from sites A, B, C and D", rather than "check newegg reviews" (mainly because newegg reviews generally are not well regarded and can be overly negative).

In reality, SSDs are like hard disks - luck of the draw. Except in this case, the odds on getting a bad one is higher. You cannot expect a top notch drive at this price (and thus shouldn't judge it as a top notch drive).

      • +6

lead_org just said he had 2 of them failed on him… which is great piece of info to me, and people who post on newegg also have the same legitimate right to express their experience, which helps in buyers making a decision…

so not sure where you came up with your theory …

        • +2

Exactly. Many people will give this deal a positive without checking the comments or tried and tested feedback from sites like newegg.

          Big mistake.

      • +4

        I created one RMA today…

    • Thanks for posting this!

  • +1

Decent price for a 128gb SSD. Be aware that these are Sata II drives (3Gbps). Something like the Crucial M4 offers Sata III (6Gbps) speeds but are ~$30-40 more expensive.

  • +2

The biggest issue (for me anyway) with this SSD is actually the performance. In particular, the Windows 7 bootup performance. It takes about 12 seconds on an intel Q6600. I understand Q6600 is slow by today's standard. (Comparison: i5 with a current gen SSD: <5 seconds; i7 with Crucial m4: 7 seconds).

Loading applications, Octane S2 is faster than traditional hard disk and is fine. You wouldn't want to use one of these on an i5 or an i7 (and I will probably think twice on an i3). If you generally put your system to sleep (rather than shutdown and start it up every time), then this drive should be fine.

Good value for money for your secondary (or older) system - assuming there will not be another price drop for a while (which is probably not a safe assumption).

    • +2

Definitely, if there is the slightest chance you can feasibly put a SATA3 drive in your system then these are not the drives for you. However, if you are like me & limited to SATA2 then they are a good budget option.

For anybody interested, these are the results of comparison speedtests I ran on my HP N40L between my OCZ Octane & the standard 250GB Seagate 7200rpm HDD:

      VB0250EAVER
      SeqTest: Read 103.72MB/s Write 101.86MB/s
      Random4K1TTest: Read 0.61MB/s Write 1.39MB/s
      Random4K64TTest: Read 1.67MB/s Write 1.30MB/s
      AccTimeTest: Read 13.108ms Write 2.813ms
      Score: Read 13, Write 13, Total 32

      OCZ-OCTANE S2 ATA Device
      SeqTest: Read 224.96 MB/s Write 117.47MB/s
      Random4K1TTest: Read 8.63MB/s Write 22.41MB/s
      Random4K64TTest: Read 88.25MB/s Write 39.73MB/s
      AccTimeTest: Read 0.155ms Write 0.128ms
      Score: Read 119, Write 74, Total 252

FWIW, the results in my other SATA2 system were almost identical.

      • +1

        AccTimeTest: Read 0.155ms Write 0.128ms
        AccTimeTest: Read 13.108ms Write 2.813ms

Those are the primary reason why you get an ssd, IOP's are nice and all, but access time is where 99.9% of users notice the speed increase.

      • -1

I'd say they are a bad budget option due to the high failure rates.
A good budget option would be Kingston, Intel or Sandisk.

There are already people reporting faulty OCZ SSDs at the end of this thread.

  • +2

i've had a bad run of luck with these OCZ Octanes so far.

Of three units I bought in the last fortnight, one was DOA, and the other two were intermittent until failure within a week.

    • I've heard warranty is OK with ocz though, most people get better drives as replacements…?

      • That is beside the point.

Having this fail when you need it is the problem.

Warranty claims take a long time to process and cause inconvenience in the sense that you have to wait for the new drive to arrive. This means you have one less drive to use during that time.

        • Tell that to Seagate, I've just had a HDD fail…

        • +1

Seagate RMA is in Sydney, so its only postage time + 1 day, much like Samsung. Its not like WD or hitachi where you need to signapore or taipei at great expense and takes 4+ weeks.

        • -1

Yeah, sadly I'm becoming well acquainted with the Alexandria address…on the positive side, I didn't need to purchase packaging this time! :)

The last one took ~2 weeks turnaround.

        • -1

How old are the drives? More importantly what model are the drives? Enlighten us.

        • +1

And thats the kicker, ive got stacks of seagates in operation currently (43 3tb's at last count) and all of them are running perfect apart from the head chirp, SMART details are spot on, and the raid arrays get thrashed on a daily basis.

      • Warranty - unless it is within 7 days where you get a brand new SSD… you could end up getting a refurbished SSD.

It is fine on a non-mission critical system. Installing Windows 7 from a USB stick does not actually take that long. Your primary PC/laptop, better invest in a more reliable and faster SSD.

        • You shouldn't be installing any consumer grade/entry level gear on a mission-critical system…just FYI. :)

        • -1

          Define consumer grade/entry level gear.

    • I had a vertex 2 fail on me.. got a replacement from ocz within 5 days =)

  • Wondering if if my computer is compatible with this ssd, can anyone let me know? and also do you just install it like a normal hdd?
