    Phew spend $12,000….in 12 months but still…

    • +18

$12k is like 1.5 week of groceries these days

    • got this a month back for my wife - with planned big payments - received points just a few days after completing the transactions to cover $12k. Recommend!

    • Get a Commbank reader, selfcharge @1.1% and reap the difference.

  • +16

12k in 12 months. They’re getting smarter with churners!

    • +2

like telstra did with the old 12 month phone plans with $500 gift cards

      • jabroni - cool word!

        • +1

He smelt what the rock was cooking everytime…

    • +15

Don't sign up. Teach them. Lots of other cards

    • Definitely anti-churn from StG

    • Hold on…are you saying, that all 12-months need to elapse first,
before they look at the spend criteria ?

I have this Amplify card, but I applied last year,
and they more 'slower' than other banks, in approving me.

I think I will hit the spend criteria within 10+ months,
but I thought as long as I spent the $12k,
then it does not matter how many months (?)

      • +1

correct, completed $12k in a few weeks (planned) and got points a few days after.

        • +1

          Thank you for confirming.

I knew I had some upcoming big spends,
so that's why I signed up to this Amplify card.

  • +1

Annual Fee is discounted further if you're an existing customer I believe

    • +1

No evidence of this when I appied today.

    • +1

$99 for me - existing customer but probably won't apply for this card. The spend is too high.

    • That used to be the case but looks like it's completely gone now?

      • The further reduced fee, or the offer for existing customers has completely gone?

        • +1

Fee free for existing customers last year when I had it. You can check the old expired OZB posts for the comments. I've already forgotten if STG also has that qantas rewards fee like their parent WBC does. EDIT just logged in to check and it's a $50 discount offer so $49 annual fee instead of the full $99, and also no qantas reward program fees etc.

  • Out of curiosity if you get an instant decline when you submit the application..does that mean the bank that refused you based on their criteria…i.e there hasn't been a credit file check?

    • I think there will still be a credit check

    • Nope they still ran the check.

    • I get instantly declined by this mob. I think it is because of all the previous CC applications with other providers that they can see. Their enquiry still shows on my credit file.

  • Pretty sweet deal at the moment

  • +6

I’d be very wary of St George. I hadn’t banked with them before and they rejected my credit card application. They apparently didn’t get all my financial info. After going into branch and resending, the approval team said no, we’re not reassessing the application - application is denied. Then I was advised to open up an everyday or savings account with them and try again down the track. Now I avoid St George/Westpac with a barge pole.

    • +5

I had similar experience with Westpac - very disappointing.
Never ever had any problems with the other banks.

    • I got lucky and got it.

      Has to send two slips.

    • +1

I also opened a savings account for 3-4 months before applying for their black card.

For me it was worth doing as it's the highest earning non Amex card for my needs. I usually put through 25k/month

    • I had the same with great southern bank and move bank. but no problem with macquarie, amp, ing, anz.

  • +6

I am a current St George customer with an amplify card. I previously had a St George home loan but recently refinanced.

Hands down had to be the hardest experience getting approved for a credit card even though they were happy to lend me 800k.

I would not wish the process on my worst enemy.

    Obviously your experience may differ.

    • I'm a new home loan customer with St George. Applied shortly after settlement for the credit card. Once I'd uploaded additional documents it was approved in 2 days - no follow up phonecall needed. Possibly the easiest application I've ever had. Complete opposite to the experience of @applejack. Sometimes makes you wonder if it just depends on who you get on the day assessing and what side of the bed they got out of.

  • +2

    $12k spend is greedy.

    • +1

Yeah even though you could argue it's $3k spend/quarter like other similar tiered cards however this forces you to spend $12k within a shorter period of time if your intention is just to churn quickly.

    • Banks? Greedy? Surely you jest

  • Applied today. Not instantly approved. Said they would call me withibn 2 to 3 days.

    • +1

Approved after a week. They claimed that my mortgage payments were too low!

  • +3

This card is the GOAT for KF miles

    • +5

I had one for a week last year to pay for my tax bill. The bonus points paid for my $7000 first class flight on Singapore Airlines home. $89 tax only.

I've now moved into the Citibank premier.

      • +4

KF so much better than Qantas with their greedy „taxes and fees“ on top of points nowadays

        • +1

A combination of both works for me. KF exclusively is hard when living in Australia. Qantas is helpful for domestic and non SIN flights

      • +1

The cheapest 1st class flight on SQ is 155k points, you would need to spend over $106k on the card to get the further points. Plus government transactions are excluded (in the $12k min spend), unless you paid with something like sniip with fees?

        • +1

93k for saver awards. Still super high.

          • +1

@Autonomic: Correct 93.5 I was looking at the wrong table

        • Curious to know how this was achieved and well. My quarterly GST is about 30k for my business, so it might be worth getting this card.

        • If you check the ATO thread over on the ausfreqflyer forum people are throwing around 5 and 6 figures BAS payments pretty casually.

        • How difficult it is find the First class flight ? I mean with qantas it is almost impossible to find a first class classic reward flight ?

      • Is ATO payment part of the eligible spend?

    • What is conversion rate from Amplify points to KF miles ?

  • +1

$99 first year fee for Existing customer.

    • Can you please help me understand how you managed to get this? I am an existing customer and I just got the card with the offer letter, and it still states a fee of $199 for the first year.
I applied a couple of weeks ago, though I am not sure if that should be an issue.

      • Did you apply via internet banking? But since you were already existing customer before the application, I think you can contact St George for the fee reduction.

      • Based on previous experiences with other bank cards sometimes the emails/letters don't reflect the actual deal of your signup. You could always open an online live chat with them and confirm the reduced fee. I've also had STG refund it after they still got it wrong in the end even after confirming it beforehand.

  • +3

    lol good luck getting approved

  • +1

Man wish there was something like Citi PayAll where you could transfer it in or something and move it back, to meet the min spend

    • +1

You can do it for this too

      • Churners unite!

      • How?

        • You can do it on any card with Revolut (1% fee)

          • @xsacha: Please say more I am interested

          • @xsacha: This is considered cash advance. I think Westpac charged so I'm assuming this would also.

            • @nightelves: Sorry I hadn't actually tried it but someone had said it doesn't appear as cash advance

  • +1

Any restrictions on if you have recently closed Amplify Qantas Platinum?

  • They gave 130k points for the Platinum in 2021. Now reduced to only 90k.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/660486

  • Excellent but the minimum credit limit of $15,000 is not what I want.

    • Where does it say that?

      • When you click apply, it shows minimum credit limit.

  • Does it make a difference if you have a current credit card, cancel it and apply for this a week later? Or is it better to wait a specific time before applying for a new card?

    • If it's just one with a low credit limit I wouldn't think it would make a difference but who knows really. It will take a while to appear as 'closed' on your credit report anyways

  • +1

Can someone confirm what points are offered when paying ATO bill?

    • No normal earning on govt charges.
You might still earn the bonus points though.
      Read the fine print

    • Pro tip. Use Beemit. Lots of previous post on this here.

      • I'm paying lots in government charges,
but I'm reluctant using 'private apps' to do them.
but I didn't know of Beemit.
(I'd only heard of Sniip before)

        • +1

have paid 30k+ in taxes a while ago, all through beemit and a combo of installment plans via ATO.

Using beemit, I earned heaps of points and without the Sniip-like 1%+ fee.

          Have fun!

          • @BuyLowLetsGo: I think that's enough to convince me :-P

In that case, I don't want to think of the all
the points that I didn't get because I didn't know of Beemit !

          • @BuyLowLetsGo: I seem to be having issues paying with my STG card through Beemit lately, tried a few different bpay bills and keep getting the error "something went wrong" and then can't be processed. The last time this happened was with a CBA credit card and it turned out to be that certain credit cards simply don't work with bpay even through a third party (like the beemit app) while other banks are fine (unless you want to fork out the 1.5% for sniip). Wonder if STG is simply another bank that rejects beemit.

            • @vawiyoci: I had the same issues when I first started using Beemit. Raise the problem with Beemit. They eventually fixed it for me. Also be aware that there are now some third parties who will not accept credit cards when paying by BPAY.

              • @BellaWii: Are you saying it's an issue that needs to be individually and manually rectified by Beemit and not a bank-wide credit card rejecting bpay issue? Also how long did it take for them to fix it for you, cos I can't wait 2 weeks with my current pile of bills lol. I did try re-installing the app and clearing data and re-adding my card as well, still the same error.

                • @vawiyoci: I actually had this error for the first time trying to pay another Gov entity that wasn't the ATO. Turns out certain vendors won't accept bpay credit card payments, while some do.

The best way to check is here: https://bpay.com.au/look-up-biller-code-financial-institutio…

The vendor code will clearly state if credit card methods are accepted, then in that case you can use via beemit.

                  • @BuyLowLetsGo: Thanks I'll take a look. It just seemed like beemit used to be able to circumvent even the vendors that don't take credit cards but maybe that was just my own fuzzy memory. Would be a shame if it became more restrictive but at least there is still the option of postbillpay in some instances since the auspost app allows paypal (through which even amex is usable).

  • +4

If you're after VFF, this would be better for 130k points ($1500 spend each month for 4 months): https://virginmoney.com.au/credit-card/compare-our-credit-ca…, after you combine with this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/756651

Lower first year annual fee too. I applied it for it last week, requested card to be express posted. Very smooth process overall.

    • Why wont u apply for both?

      • +2

Too many credit card application inquiries already. 😅 Some banks are catching on and denying churners, even if you have decent credit score, income etc to service the credit.

        • I just closed a card recently and my score went up by 130 points. So weird.

          • +1

@hawkeye93: Not weird at all. Less credit limit = higher score, given all else equal

        • How many have u applied in the last 2 years. Im thinking od starting to collect vff points.

          • @stmgr: Virgin money's card would my fourth one this FY. I haven't been turned down for any cc yet but have heard on OzB about some banks pushing back applications of churners.

If going for VFF, that virgin money card is really good value even if going by 1c/point conversion.

            • @DrPotato: Yea i had initially applied for the amex ultimate qantas, then westpac altitude qantas, and nab signature qantas. All in february.

Then realised velocity is pretty good for KF and domestic flights so just applied for the virgin money high flyer last week and got approved already.

But im also eyeing the citibank prestige and premier and then theres this one lol but im scared to apply now.

Should i close before applying or does it not matter lol.

              • @Justbuy: I would read the comments on other OzB posts about the cards you're interested in to gauge if you might get rejected for several recent CC applications. Virgin Money seems alright but if you have multiple cards now, I'd be cautious. Not sure about St George.

At the time of application for Virgin Money, I only had a Commbank Gold Credit card with a limit of $4k. Remember you've also got to meet the minimum spend requirements for all cards you apply for.

        • Currently, I got the quinella of the cards..haha…

          Citibank Premier
          AMEX Essential
          ANZ Rewards
          St. George Amplify

Main thing is to not have debts, eg. HECS or Mortgage or Car lease
It's fine if you're renting or not paying rent (if some other arrangement),
but income needs to be 'high enough', and low living expenses.

Still, I found St. George the most 'troublesome' to deal with,
which also means, they are very prudent in their checks.

Also, I had to lower the Citibank card limit, to as low as possible,
ie. it used to be $15k (from their 'family, friends offer'),
otherwise, I wasn't getting any card approved.

I'll be cancelling 2 out of those Credit Cards within a few months anyway,
as I try to churn out of them, and wait 12-months before the next one.

    • Interesting. Ill have to keep an eye out for this next time. Do you know which credit card scheme wait list applies to be eligible?

      • Not sure Xizor. The T&C don't specify an explicit exclusion but might be worth calling up and asking.

    • @DrPotato is it 130k or 100k? The link you gave shows 100k to me.

    • Exactly what I did last week and got the card today. Any idea how strict they are on per month 1.5k? It is almost EOM and I gotta spend real fast if it starts now. Kinda weird spending if you apply late in the month

      • It is in the first four months from card approval so I would think it doesn't follow the calendar month.

        • How do you calculate current month if not via calendar month though?

          • @knobbs: If your card was approved on 24th March, make sure to spend $1500 before 24th April. Or 20th April, to be on the safe side.

  • +3

Amplify Platinum seems a better deal.

Quarter the Af in the first year and you can still net 90k amplify points which converts to 45k VF/KF miles for a 3k minimum spend.

If you loathe the trend of more onerous minimum spends, vote with your feet.

    • What’s your approach to points earn - if your goal is x points for example, how many credit cards do you have/churn through per year? Considering you would need to have 2x platinum cards to yield the same points earn as the signature (incl points earned from min spend).

I find I am always trying to have less cards with most amount of points, as I am worried about my credit score. But don’t really know if credit score/worthiness is truely an issue in Aus considering there are so many different assessment methods.

Also I’ve always thought min spend requirement is not really an issue, achievable via rent, tax or worst comes to worst gift cards. Though to be fair, 12k is the highest I’ve seen in a while…
