    Commbank router is back!

    • do you pronounce it as root-er?

      • +1

British people say that - brings out the snickering eight year old giggle in me every time

    • I take it this router is 'determined to be difficult'?

  • Is this the one we can use on Royal Caribbean?

    • On princess Diamond

    • I don't think this supports splash authentication pages

      • I've always found a way to make it work - soemtimes you need to do something a little creative like authenticate with your phone, then clone your phones MAC address.

        https://docs.gl-inet.com/en/4/tutorials/connect_to_a_hotspot…

IMO you're better off splashing for one of the higher end models with wireguard, dual band, more processing power…

    • Windows have native ability to create local hotspot to share internet. And it's free

      • What if you have a windowless cabin?

        • Find a sledgehammer and make a window

    • What would be really awesome is connecting to plane's WiFi - then using the Chromecast to play through the plane's HDMI port that pops onto the screen - with VPN in theory it should give access to Netflix / Stan / Prime etc. Wonder if that would work ?

  • What is the advantage of using something like this?
Is it for the VPN use?
Any other advantage I am missing?

Past deals sometimes had a massive list of example uses which might be handy for you.

it is. i went down the same route, as there are many different models to pick from, so in this case it is really more constructive to you to look up the previous discussions.

edit: the usage itself is quite straight forward, but to know what you are getting exactly and not be disappointed with the performance of the product, it's the "do your own due diligence" part (eg. read the previous discussions).

the interesting to note bit is that these devices hasn't been refreshed for a while, so it's still relevant for most of it.

Convert a public network(wired/wireless) to a private Wi-Fi for secure surfing.

  • Looks like a lot of the GL.inet routers have 25% off. Would you recommend the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal)for $52.42 as it has better specs and supports Wireguard as well as OpenVPN? https://www.amazon.com.au/GL-iNet-GL-SFT1200-Secure-Travel-R…

    • Get this one instead as it has a USB 3 connectivity if you plan to use local Media sharing from your SSD or portable HDD.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/GL-iNet-GL-MT1300-Wireless-Pocket-…

The wireguard and openvpn are also faster… yes you are bottlenecked on the repeated wifi signal or internet connection but it's good to have a faster speed in case you get into one of those rare hotel internet connection which are fast.

  • I bought this one and immediately return it and get the Slate Plus instead.

The mini-USB plug is a downer as it is easily get loose resulting with the device being offline. Also, the USB-C power of a newer model is much easier to plug in and more snug fit. The backend access to the GUI as well as the wireless speed is really slow compare to the Slate/Beryl, not to mention the OpenVPN and Wireguard speed as well. See comparison chart here: https://www.gl-inet.com/products/compare/

  • Just got back from Bali using this mango in a large hotel wifi with captive portal. Worked wonderfully.

I personally wouldn't bother with 2.4Ghz only unit these days, especially if you are travelling.

    • yep, one of the hotels in my recent stay was 5Ghz only so I couldn't use my mango.

      Looking to upgrade now

    • +1

it would matter if you need to consider power draw.

eg. when i travel, i power my hotspot with power banks as i walk around… so those high drain routers that requires a power jack would be useless to me.

  • thank you for sharing, can anybody recommend one with sim card 5g?

  • I believe I can use this to make my wired printer become wireless?

    • yes, I use this to connect my Win98 PC to WiFi via Ethernet.
