  • Nice, waiting for MEL to SFO or LAX price to $8XX

  • +1

Sensational pricing but surely 98% of international travellers are going to need checked luggage.

    • +21

Not necessarily - I have travelled several times with just hand luggage - its great, you can walk straight off the plane and out of the airport without waiting around. Longest was a 2 week trip to NYC and Iceland in the middle of winter. Wore heavy boots and a big winter jacket, and had lots of thermals and thin layers in my carry on. Stayed at airbnbs that had washing machines. I understand its a barrier to some but you can't deny this is a sweet bargain if you can swing it!

      • +12

walk straight off the plane and out of the airport without waiting around

Customs & Immigration would like a word!

        • lol whoops, I guess I was thinking about Europe. Well, you can at least bypass the luggage carousel :)

          • @CheapFlightHunter: I'd still fly checked-luggage free to the US to skip that anxiety of all those criminals trying to steal your luggage as it's doing 800 laps of the carousel, while you're stuck in the C&I line.
            Next time. Maybe.

          • @CheapFlightHunter: What's your rough hand luggage set up like? I liked getting around with my northface base camp duffle bag/backpack

Not sure if I could do two weeks only with it though…

    • +3

I do around 6-8 International trips a year, I don't think I've ever had checked luggage except if I needed to take work product.

      • Same here, less travel but any trip around 2 weeks only really requires one carry on.

Any trip longer than that, you do a wash. So again only a carry on lol.

One time I packed last second and panicked and brought a whole bunch of “just in case” stuff in a checked bag. Didn’t even touch most of it.

Granted everyone is different but from what I see, people just don’t think about what they are actually bringing and if they’d actually use it.

        • +1

What if I just wanna buy 30 kg worth of shits in LA? I can understand if you go to bali for few weeks, you don’t need checked bags. It really depends on destination.

          • +1

@unhuman: Yes of course that condition does exist. Just not as usual.

My response to people who bring 30kg of stuff with them from home. Like you don’t need a hair dryer and that third set of shoes.

But as I said, everyone is different. So feel free to skip buying this ticket.

    • Wy wife and I did carry on last year in September to Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland and the USA.
Gone for about 5 or so weeks.
No issues at all and no lost or delayed luggage.
In saying that we were visiting 1st world countries so if we needed anything we were just going to buy it and donate to an Op Shop on the way out.
      We didn't need to.

      • +1

Did 5 weeks in EU in December. Luggage delayed >4 hours twice- $700 each time from travel insurance ($0 excess) for new clothes etc for bags that arrived at most the next day. Few new outfits for no real inconvienice.

    • +1
    • surely 98% of international travellers are going to need checked luggage.

I travel international 3 or 4 times a year and haven't checked in luggage for about 10 years.

  • -3

Who's traveling across the world without any luggage?

    • +16

I'm sharing the lowest price, you can of course add luggage if you need it

      • -1

Fair enough. Are extra luggage prices reasonable with Fiji?

I've never purchased extra luggages because they always tend to be extremely expensive, especially on budget airlines - usually makes it basically cheaper to just take a full service carrier.

        • +6

Well, they are a full service carrier - unfortunately many 'full service' carriers these days have introduced some sort of 'lite' fare that doesn't include checked bags. Seems to be around $100 each way to upgrade to Fiji Airways 'Value' fare, that includes 30kg checked luggage.

    • +2

You can take carry on, for people like myself that's all you need.

    • Never understood what people have in their checks luggage. Are you taking your air fryer with you?

      • Never understood what people have in their checks luggage

Me neither. Carry-on will hold 5 pairs of undies, 3 pairs of shorts and 5 T-shirts/polos which is enough to last months.

  • $900 Rtn from Brisbane but will wait for direct flights Oct 10 - 18th

  • +2

Be wary that the cheapest price is likely though a third party reseller (i.e. BYOJet), not Fiji Airways directly. It's usually $100 more on Fiji.

    • +3

Yes—I'm here to show OzBargain the best bargain around, be that directly through the airline or through an online travel agent

  • +2

thanks but some pretty long layovers too.

41 hour trip from Sydney to SF for example - yikes!

    • +1

Not all - use the flight duration filters to filter out the longer ones. Here is SYD - SFO under 20 hours each way, and SYD - LAX with short layovers too

    • +6

That’s like a day in Nadi for Free! Depending on what time you land, personally i’d consider it’s an advantage and not a problem.

  • +1

    anyone buy ana yesterday?

    • I did, still think there's a high chance of them canceling but no email yet.

    • What was the deal?

      • I’m guessing they’re talking about this?

      • It was Jakarta to New York return in Business class for $530 on ANA.

        • Could I pls ask if you bought direct?
Is this Jakarta or Japan return in business class with ANA?

          • @tulalit: It's Jakarta to NYC with a stopover in Tokyo both ways. All flights are in business.

            • @bsm2122: @bsm2122: oh wow!!! may I ask where did you book this and dates of travelling?
              That’s an awesome price!

        • how did you find out about that?

  • Nadi stopover was pretty awful a few years ago

    • +3

Why? Sit at a cheap hotel and drink beers for a day?

      • +1

No, must go to the lounge and eat shitty sushis in uncomfortable chairs instead of exploring!

  • Is there any way to get prices like this into LA and returning from SFO?

    • +3

Yes - just might take you awhile as you have to just click around on different date combos. Here is in LAX out SFO at $765

      • Thanks very much for the help. Booked a week in November.

  • And I thought I snagged a bargain with Fiji airways at $1100 return god damnit! Booked 6 months ago

I always miss out on these cheap fares

  • +4

$1046 to LA return with luggage from fiji airways website. only 3 hrs stop over in fiji. not bad deal.

    • That's solid

I'm in Europe soon, and it's so expensive.

It's cheaper to go to America at the moment, but he'll tipping probably pushes it over the edge lol

      • +1

I went to both last year. USA was a lot more expensive.

        • Inflation?
          Tipping is a killer.

I'm heading to France, super expensive. Italy should be okay tho, but not the cheapest in Europe.

  • Beware of Fiji airways 1 checked bag policy at 30kg limit for flights to and from Fiji. Need to pay extra for more bags.

  • +3

LA and San Fran are terrific places to go… if you like homeless people, disappointment and Mexican food. Mexican food is underrated tbf.

    • +1

I never knew homeless people were CAMPING in LA🏕 😱 I had to go to Skid Row and was a really scary experience …..

      • +1

Yeah, I can imagine…. I had heard that they have a lot of homeless people in LA, but didn't realise how severe until I went out of the back of my hostel in Hollywood and there was a whole community of junkies out there. No judgement to them generally, but kind of surprised me for a moment. You definitely don't see that talked about whenever you see a tv show or movie based in Hollywood.

        • +1

Exactly!! It really shocked me.I thought LA is all about 'hollywood' like celebs, expensive houses, cars, shops and also clean and neat.

          • @melgirl: Yep they have no social safety net like centrelink in Australia. When i went as a 7 year old in 1992 it was shocking to see a kid my age begging at the border between Mexico & the USA. Same goes for all the bums around the LA library who offer to protect your car for a tip, if you don't pay prepare for a smashed window or 2.

        • I had heard that they have a lot of homeless people in LA

It's interesting isn't it. LA and SF are the Democrat heartland and the result of their policies are plain to see on the streets, yet people still vote for them.

You definitely don't see that talked about whenever you see a tv show or movie based in Hollywood.

Because Hollywood is all lefties so they are heavily biased in presenting their own world view rather than reality. Once you take off the goggles and open both eyes, the patterns become very obvious.

    • Yes, It was an eye opening experience for me even NY the same.
Felt Washington and Philadelphia was better.

      • Yeah, you're right, Philly and Washington were two of the more decent places. There were a lot of other absolute turdholes I had to drive through to experience them though.

      • I've heard different from Philly, specially from Kensington.

  • All these people waiting 😂

Just because it's cheap out of Sydney, doesn't mean deals will come out of other cities.

Friends of mine told me Sept, Oct is a good time to visit. They love in Boston and Seattle but I'm planning to head over next year. Both cities are a pain in the ass to get too, I wanted to use points but probably has to be LA/NYC.

  • Is there any way to book these as QF tickets?

    • There was a bunch of MEL - LAX on Fijian as classic rewards yesterday (december)

  • Larsson 49 min agonew
Never understood what people have in their checks luggage. Are you taking your air fryer with you?

Are you serious? How about if you're going for a couple of weeks and you have family with you?

    • Are you serious? >

      Not OP, but yes.

How about if you're going for a couple of weeks

I've done 6 weeks multiple times with carry-on only. It's easy if you have some discipline.

and you have family with you?

Every person in the travel party follows the same format. Once you do it once, you'll wonder why you ever bothered lugging all that shit around with you.

  • +1

Exactly, we got a kid and basically just need one big luggage. Tried to book the cheapest "Lite" fare and an extra baggage, it was a shocking cost demand for $300+ for one leg per bag per person.. end up booked for "Value" fare which is $1046 and turned out kid "Value" fare is quite cheap $700 something

    • -1

Feel your pain, there is no such thing as 1 piece of luggage anymore. The amount of stuff required just for a few days away is like preparing to go off grid for 3 months as an adult.

  • accommodation and rental car ( in LAX) would more than add to the costs of this cheapo ticket

  • +1

this is like half the price of the QF why is it liked less? i'm not sure what the main difference is? can someone explain pls

    • +1

      people like luggage, I guess

    • +1

Qantas fly non-stop and include bags. Adding a bag adds $200. Still an outstanding deal in my opinion.
Flew with them on an old 747 to Fiji 10 years ago and the crew were fantastic.
