I exclusively use NAS-type drives in my standard machine because they all tend to be CMR and 7200RPM. Which is what you want if you're going to be accessing the data frequently.

    • +1

Ironwolf are quite loud. Ironwolf pro even more so. If that doesn't matter to you, then nothing.

    • +1

let me know your address and I will be right over to stop you from doing such

      • No dice, Tyson. I didn’t come here looking for trouble.

I’ll just continue running my GEOS and Pirates save games across Winrar backups spanning 800 floppy disks, just like the good old days…

  • Torn between 20TB and 18TB. I need them for my DS1821+. Hmmm.

    • +2

For what's it worth, the 18TB is cheaper per TB.

      • +1

Yeh, I generally lean towards higher TB but OzB mentality is to choose cheaper per TB. lol

        • +1

I personally went with the 20, easier to expand with in the future was my thinking as I use unraid, this will be my new parity drive

          • @ra1k0: I'm populating my DS1821+ with 8 of these. With 8x18TB, it comes up to $2122.08 vs $2499.56 for 8x20TB.

            • @zeno: what do you store on $2500 of storage?

              • @9hundred: This comment triggers buyer’s remorse. If you put it that way, it does seem extremely…extra. Haha

            • @zeno: I see your point for that many drives in one hit, but I work off the principle of averages.
Also that's 16TB you're missing out on if you're limited to 8 slots. $377.48 for 16TB outside this deal is a decent price imo.

  • +1

Must be clearing the decks for those new 22TB models they released last week with a cheap MRSP.

  • Damn no CB

  • These price drops are crazy. Worth it to hold off for a while longer?

    • +1

Yes, wait 3 years and these will be the cost of SSDs.

    • +4

I've been watching hdd waiting for a deal for over 15 months

~$16 or less per TB is absolutely bonkers cheap

I made my order, hoping they package it well and I have no issues 🤞

Before this all the deals were $25-$33 per TB, nvme prices have been dropping recently so perhaps it will become normal but the same thing might happen again, you wait 15 months for low prices again

    • +4

Can wait your whole life. Will always be cheaper. This seems to be a significant drop in price compared to the general price trend.

  • +2

Combined with Amazon credit and it worked out to be $219.45 for 3x 8TB IronWolf. Time to give the new NAS some love.

  • +1

Wonder if these orders will be cancelled since this looks like a price error

    • +1

Checking out Camelx3 US it looks like the price for the 18tb is the same ~$279 but obviously in USD instead.

You could be right - it could be intended to be in USD…

    • I was just thinking that myself, we've seen it happen with WD SSDs they had for really cheap last year I think it was.

    • +2

      Hope not! 🤞🏼

    • SSHhhh, they'll hear you.

    • The weird thing is that while the dollars values are the same, the cents isn't. It's .99 for all US, but various values for AU. Does Amazon automatically adjust cent values in the US or AU, or is it up to the person uploaded the prices to manually put in a cents value or something?

  • +1

Click to upvote ratio is strong. Glad this wasn't posted during work / peak times otherwise I'd lose the deal.

  • +3

    Buy first think later.

    • -8

ssd are getting so cheap, so it's better to think first, and buy later actually.

      • +8

Wake me when we have 20tb SSD for $329.

Actually don't.. by the time that happens 20tb will be considered small. I'll probably just be grumpy because you woke me up for nothing.

  • +1

Thanks OP grabbed 4x8TB drives for the NAS I am setting up. Way cheaper than any recent deals!

      • +1

What better options? SSDs are sooooo far off from being under $20/TB.

      • What future better options have popped up in your crystal ball?

  • +1

Crazy deal. Not entirely sure what I'll do with it, but still bought!

    • yeah you don't even know what you will do with it. I bought ssd drives because i thought they were cheap at the time and they have been sitting around collecting dust, and now worth not much maybe half.

      • If they're unopened maybe sell them second hand on facebook marketplace or something before they lose all value. Somebody would love the storage I'm sure.

  • Bought 2 x 18tb now and worry later, seems to be too good to be true, selling over double the price in Australia

    • what are you gonna do with all those drives though, sell it, store it, or what?

      • Upgrade my nas, but i cancelled the order now as i can't stand the noise, besides maybe i don't really need that much storage

  • +3

    Ordered 2x 18TBs for $530.52 delivered. Not bad @ $14.74/TB.

My insomnia pays off yet again.

    • Mine too

    • are you sure it's gonna pay off though?

      • SLEEP AT WORK

        • sleep after work

          • +1

@9hundred: I slept at 6pm so can't sleep anymore lol

Work starts at 8am, going to be a challenge

            • @sqheaven: may aswell stay up now it's just a few more hours Yo!

              • @9hundred: Like in the exam days 😂

It never worked out back then, sleep writes the memory. So gotta sleep now to remember I bought HDDs.

Haven't turned on my NAS for last two years. Time to give it a new life lol

              • @9hundred: must be a baker or something to get up that early

                • @9hundred: i love the nights, work late, it's the best, and regarding hdd, most stuff is streamed now, so no need for 200tb+ of local storage but nice to have but not worth it

      • are you sure it's gonna pay off though?

Well, you could say it cost me $530, from a certain point of view.

        • that point of view is that you will actually make use of it now though

  • Anyone know the noise level of the ironwolf pro drive, a bit worry that it might be too loud after reading some comments

    • -1

      It's fk'n loud

      • Shit, might cancel it then, i hate too much noise with my nas

        • -3

probably a good idea, because you probably don't need it anyway

      • +2

I dunno why you got downvoted so much. It is indeed very loud.

    • +2

Apart from the louder scratching noises while writing data, Iron wolfs also make an audible consistent clicking noise while idle and parking which a lot of people find annoying. The only people who buy these seem to set them up in basements/noise proof closets. also the pro drives are more louder than the regular ones.

      • +2

        Thanks for that, already cancelled

      • Interesting, I have ironwolves that are fairly quiet, and a wd red that vibrates a lot, is loud, and you can hear the head park from outside the case!

  • I was thinking about buying some, but I already have so many drives sitting around unused.

  • I am just wondering what nas do you guys use for plex

    • there is no universal nas model for plex, i got to match my needs - i.e rackmount, shortdepth, intel cpu to make use of my plexpass for hw transcoding. it works great! but i paid more for the rackmount option, there are far cheaper desktop ones with similar capabilities.

    • I use a DS920+. Have the Plex server running on there too. Used to use my DS212J and have the server on my NVIDIA shield. Both worked well but new method is far more reliable and quicker. Still use the old NAS as storage until new drives arrive and I can use RAID.

    • Old gaming pc in rackmount housing. Everything runs in docker. Transcoding done with a 1060 6gb.

      • What housing did you opt for?

        • TGC Rack Mountable 3U 390mm Server Chassis TGC-34390

          cheap and alright quality

fits a lp 1050ti easily and a dual 1060 with a 90 degree power connector

    • Literally just an old PC running windows 10 and 20tb across 2 drives (soon to be 40TB lol).

Not the most efficient and by some rough calculations I could maybe have a NAS pay for itself in 5-10 years by power savings… But ceebs

      It's working fine

  • Ordered two 8TB Barracuda since my existing drives are 5200Rpm. Higher rpm drives probably burn out quicker 😂

    • There is no evidence of this whatsoever.

  • -3

Going to refuse the delivery of the same drives that I bought from the other deal and get a free return + free refund. Literally get get 8TB extra for the same price I paid a few days ago

    • this is the way

  • Holy crap 8TB for $100, what an amazing time we live in!

    • -2

buy it then and think later

  • Just bought 2x8TB a week ago from amazon us too. Thank god it's not delivered yet. Will buy more and then return the ones I got. bloody 40%! too good! Thanks OP

  • Darn, bought AfterPay Amazon Gift Card to pay for 8tb, half of my cart sold after buying the gift cards, now have $100 leftover Amazon credit.

8TB Barracuda is now sold out.

Edit: My single barracuda one was cancelled, with $200 already spent via AfterPay..

    Edit2: Instead of $200 for 2x barracuda 8tb, I got a single IronWolf Pro 16TB for $250.

  • +1

Trying to buy 4x20TB but got hit buy a $200 Import fee because order is >$1000 :(

    • Buy 2… and then 2 again.

      • Can I do so?
I thought they may easily figure out it's the same person ordering the same thing and send me the $200 bill.

        • Good question. I didn’t consider this when I placed my orders.

        • Different name probably work? Or different name and friend or family's address?

    • I don't get this. Amazon charges GST on behalf of the Gov't. No import fee's should apply.

      • Google "import tax $1000"

      • I'm not from Australia but as I understand it it's similar to here. When good are valued of $1000, customs are supposed to assess them for GST+import duties. Because GST is already collected by Amazon, and there are no duties on hard disks in Australia https://www.abf.gov.au/importing-exporting-and-manufacturing… (8471.70.00) you shouldn't have to pay extra tax or duties.

But you will have to pay the processing fee which I think is $88 ($50+38) https://www.abf.gov.au/importing-exporting-and-manufacturing… for the cost of this processing and biosecurity. (Not sure about Australia but in NZ I believe the biosecurity fee is supposed to cover the cost of processing of all such imports meaning people who are hit with it are effectively subsidising those who import stuff under $1000. But this is probably fairer than the taxpayer doing it so…..)

You might also have to pay a brokerage fee if you let someone else clear it for you. In NZ as a consumer you can often avoid these by dealing directly with customs except for some shippers who refuse to let you. I'm not sure if you can clear it yourself in Australia https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546894 but it sounds like Amazon requires you to use them to clear it hence the $200 instead of $88.

  • +1

The reviews are concerning that mentions very poor packaging.

    • +1

Brother…. its's like 60% cheaper than anywhere else in Australia.

      • +2

If it comes knocking around from america, doesnt really matter even if its 100% off if the disks are guaranteed doa.

        • +1

Amazon generally good with refunds right?

AND… my credit card has insurance built in I think.

        • I don't think Amazon offers this guarantee.

For this ridiculously cheap deal, and via a seller who overwhelmingly packs and ships their products securely, I'm more than happy to roll the dice, run a diskcheck on arrival and obtain a replacement or refund if any faults are found.

    • +1

Yeah I really hope they don't just toss them into an oversized box and let them bounce around all the way to Australia, like they have done to me before.

    • -4

Amazon packing for these drives were good. Thats not the issue lol. The drives are bad majority of the time globally. Poor copying speeds, going to sleep while in use, reformatting itself, disk errors, not loading on systems, etc, etc. There's a reason these drives are selling for this price. Seagate know this but are trying to get rid of them, hopefully a lot of them dont have issues but a huge amount do. I fell for the cheap prices scam in December buying these. Now so many people will be wondering what the hell they bought in a couple weeks time

      • How do you explain the majority of positive reviews?

        • -4

You can believe what you want. Like i said theres plenty of people without issues. But theres just as many with them. You do realise all sites delete at least some of the negative reviews.

          • @Whisper Quiet: Perhaps you're in the minority? Almost 2000 clicks on the original post, you're the only person that's mentioned any issues. So far you haven't backed up your claim that there's widespread issues with these drives. Feel free to prove me wrong.

      • please show us your reference

        • -3

My referene is a refund from Amazon lol. My reference is on the pc forums & the other ozbargainers complaints too. You guys obviously dont want to believe it or are protecting your purchase but im just letting people know.

  • Damn…. just order 4x 18TB hard drives.

Bought it twice. 2x 18tb with 5% discount. And then again.

I don't even have a NAS…. so let me know if there are any good deals guys.

    • there hasnt been a very good nas deal for literally since before covid when the ds920+ was bout $600

      • Looks like I'll be sitting on these bubble-wrapped hard drives for a while lol.

Ok… if the 923+ ever goes near $700, I'll get one.

I literally have ZERO idea how to set up a NAS or Raid 5. I just know that I'm on my like 6th Samsung 2TB t5 hard drive

        • +3

Make sure you test the drives once they drives so you can return any damaged ones.
