Strange, I ordered a 16 before you did and haven't had payment taken yet or shipping notifications.

      • I ordered 2x 16tb at 7:35 this morning but cancelled the order at 9:27am and ordered 4x 12tb at 9:31am. Mine has not been marked as shipped yet but my bank account says Pending the cost of the order from Amazon.

This is the hard disk sale of the year. Nothing else compares.

    • +1
    • +1

Yep agreed. When i found the post only the 12s and 20s were still in stock. I ordered 2 x 12s and then a few minutes later decided to go all in and get 8 x 20s and 2 more 12s as well. Just shipped. Honestly can't believe it. I kept checking to see if they had been posted but it was still on order and i literally said yesterday its def a price error and im getting refunded. Been waiting a year and a half for a good hdd deal. Nailed it

  • I ordered 12 x 20TB at 00:52 this morning. Not shipped as of writing this comment at 16:56 (4:56PM) but financial transaction has gone through.
Interestingly enough, they split the transaction into two separate payments of 6 items.

      You sounded like a scalpers…

      • +1

How many scalpers does he sound like?

        • The number are obvious.

          • @kml22: Actually, populating QNAP TVS H-1688X with these :)
Upgrade from the existing 10TB drives I have in the raid array. Additionally, its a setup with QUTS, which doesn't allow you to add drives to an existing pool. You can upgrade existing drives in the pool but not add.

            • @Konradical: Thats ZFS for ya… expandable VDevs coming soon… or so they've been saying for the last 5 years…

    • +2

So you paid extra import duty?

    • +4

Rip you paying import fees….should have done max 3 hdd's per order to avoid paying $500 in import tax.

      • Yes I am. Decided to do it on purpose to potentially see the result of how they ship it in a single larger quantity.
Too many comments I have read when people ordered either single or doubles, the were loosely packed inside which caused them to shake around which ultimately lead to their DOA.
Hoping when dispatched in a single larger quantity that they ship it in its original foam packaging that suppliers get into stores.
Secondly, the saving is so large on this deal, its worth.
Also received confirmation that portion was shipped today.

  • +1

To those who manage to get these drives delivered it would be nice to get some feedback as to where the drives are made (China or Thailand) and if they arrived working or DOA. It may also be useful to know how their order was packed for future reference/deals.
In the past I've only had issues with Chinese made drives and have not yet had any issues with similar drives made in Thailand (be it Seagate or WD).
If you do get a drive that works I would recommend periodically checking the SMART stats specifically under Relocated Sector Count. Quite often SMART can show the status as Good or Healthy but also have increased stats for Relocated Sector Counts which are the tell tale signs for pending/premature drive failure (In my case all my Chinese made drives had this happen or failed outright).

The 8tb model is back in stock at $166. That's still cheaper than most places right?

    • +2

For the barracuda it’s a good price. Not as good a drive as the Ironwolfs but price is great. It was the drive I had in price alert and triggered me to post the deal. Been watching that drive slowly creep down in price over the past few weeks. Start of the month it was $230, saw a large price drop and then has been gradually getting cheaper every other day.

      https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07H289S7C?active=pri…

If it wasn’t for yesterday, I believe $166 would be the lowest price on Camelx3 or close to it.

Bit hard to see if it’ll keep getting cheaper. Reduce the price history graph to one month and it’s on a downwards trend.

      • it was 99$ which i missed and new price is nearly double :(
may seem good but i have to wait , 99$ was the real deal which i missed.

    • From what I can tell, the Barracuda and some of the other drives are now available from Amazon US again but at their proper price for the current amazon.com deal/price. I.E. the price they should be after taking into account conversion+GST. During yesterday's deal, they were basically at the amazon.com USD price but in AUD without considering conversion or GST hence why it's assumed it was an error.

3x 8TB Ironwolfs just shipped! Arriving May 6. Ordered 2:30am

  • +1

I hope I wake up tomorrow to a shipping notification!

  • +1

12TB is now back to $315.80

  • I got 2x16tb, my order just shipped.

  • Anyone who plans on doing any kind of server setup should know x4+ disks is a much smarter play than x2 disks.

    x4 8TB >>>>>>>> x2 16TB

This is especially true if you run TrueNAS or any kind of zfs array.

    • The opposite is true.

4 drives have twice as much chance of failing, when compared to 2 drives.

They also take up twice the number of valuable drive bays and SATA ports, and consume twice as much power, and generate twice as much heat.

And on top of all that, the 4 drives might even cost you more money than the 2 drives !!

      • The opposite is true.

Not in the context of redundancy, like RAID.

RAID requires at least one disk to be for redundancy; i.e. being able to handle one or more disk failures without losing data or availability.

If you want to be fault tolerant with 2x16TB, then you end up with only 16TB of usable space, i.e. 50% of what you paid for. If you did RAID on 4x 8TB, you could end up with 24TB if you chose redundancy, i.e. 75%.

They also take up twice the number of valuable drive bays and SATA ports, and consume twice as much power, and generate twice as much heat.

You're right about the space used. But I reckon it wouldn't be twice as much power or heat, because you'll be using each disk less. More power and heat, yes, but probably not twice as much.

Tradeoffs in favour of data redundancy.

4 drives have twice as much chance of failing, when compared to 2 drives.

Not exactly, but the odds are increased. You're right that with more disks you increase the probability of a single disk failing, but 4x8TB vs 2x16TB gives you more usable disk space and still the ability to handle a single disk failure.

Another consideration is that with RAID, you get faster reads because the requests are spread over all the disk.

      • DeepDreamer already provided a good answer, but I will also refer you to the TrueNAS documentation:

        https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/gettingstarted/corehardwar…

Zpool layout (the organization of LUNs and volumes, in TrueNAS/ZFS parlance) is outside of the scope of this guide. The availability of double-digit terabyte drives raises a question TrueNAS users now have the luxury of asking: How many should I use to achieve my desired capacity? You can mirror two 16 TB drives to achieve 16 TB of available capacity, but that does not mean you should. Mirroring two large drives offers the advantage of redundancy and balancing reads between the two devices, which could lower power draw, but little else. The write performance of two large drives is similar to that of a single drive. By contrast, an array of eight 4 TB drives offers a wide range of configurations to optimize performance and redundancy at a lower cost. If configured as striped mirrors, eight drives could yield four times greater write performance with a similar total capacity. You might also consider adding a hot-spare drive with any zpool configuration, which lets the zpool automatically rebuild itself if one of its primary drives fails.

Basically, if you mirror two 16TB drives, you get just 16TB of space and no striped write performance.
If you were going to mirror, it should at least be with x4 drives so you can run RAID10 (mirror + striping).

  • My order of 3 x 20TB has been dispatched.

  • My first 6 x 12TB drives just shipped !

I have another batch of 6 ordered showing an expected arrival date of 4 days later not yet shipped.

  • +4

    Massive JAV collections

  • My 2x 16tb just shipped. Wish I had ordered more. Now to find a decent NAS.

  • +1

My 20TB drive is supposedly arriving May 3 but the Shipped section of the order progress bar is not marked yet.

    • Same here, 2x16TB with similar ETA but still not shipped.

      • When I bought a 16TB weeks ago an ETA was given yet it took about 2 weeks to ship. I suspect they've got stock on the way to be shipped when it arrives.

The 16TB I bought in this deal hasn't shipped either. ETA May 4.

  • My 2 x 8TB Ironwolf drives shipped. Ordered 3:40am. ETA April 29.

    • +1

      Ordered 12:17am

Mine not shipped but 2 to the 9th of may ETA for delivery.

Maybe 3 days they will ship.

  • +1

I bought 2x16TB ordered at around 830am, has also been shipped

  • I placed 2 separate orders for 2 x 20TB drives to avoid extra duty when over $1000.
Amazon has so far shipped & charged for 3 of the drives together with the same tracking Id.

    • +1

Amazon often combine orders for efficiency. I guess 3 drives were available form this warehouse, 1 will maybe come from another.

As the orders were made at the same time, from the same vendor and the value is over $1000 you may be liable for duty regardless if it was invoiced on paper twice, unfortunately.

    • +1

2 separate orders for 2 x 20TB drives to avoid extra duty

You need to send to two different addresses for this to work…

    • Amazon just charged me for the remaining 1 x 20TB drive.
I guess its working out OK.

    • By my Math it should still be ok?

      Each 20TB drive was $329, $329x3 = $987, Under the $1000 threshold.

    • +2

Have a read here. It looks like Amazon and their carrier does all the pre-clearance paperwork so their parcels clear the duty process without delays. Nobody is manually checking, it is done in massive batches and assumed to be correct.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/help/customer/display.html?node…

They cover any fee's if they are applied after the fact. If they didn't charge you at checkout you wont be charged.

Big daddy Jeff has you covered.

      • Customs do checks though - there is a small chance they will check your package and charge you duty if they inspect it when it enters AU (and they see you have two packages totalling more than $1000 in the same shipment). This does happen sometimes…

  • 2 X 12tb, ordered yesterday morning. Not shipped.

    • Same. No updates yet

      • Mine just shipped

    • I received shipment confirmation last night for the same order. Estimated delivery listed as May 1.

  • Not shipped either

    • neither, but my card just got charged 10 mins ago

  • Just been charged :) I guess no cancellations

    • I was charged yesterday but still not shipped. Some people mentioned that previously they have been charged and then cancelled afterwards. So it could still happen. Lets hope not and we do get the HDDs.

      • I received a pending charge on my card too (they haven't taken the money yet)

        Still not shipped

        Fingers crossed

  • +1

Ordered 2 x 16tb, charged but not shipped yet either. Fingers crossed the status updates soon!

    • My order finally shipped at 5:35am today 25/4

  • I'm not sure why anyones doubting their orders will be honoured.. its Amazon. Also, no need to worry if your order hasn't been shipped. Amazon US orders can take days to ship as an AU Customer.

    • +2

Because Amazon have in the past cancelled price errors.

  • i order 5 x 16TB and have just been charged and status changed to preparing for shipment :)

    • and yep forgot about import fees.. but oh well.. still saving heaps :)

      • What are import fees? When/who has to pay them?

        • Everyone if the order is over $1000

      • Were you charged at checkout for import fees ?

        • -1

Yes if your order is over $1000 in a single order 👍

          • @Nom: I made this mistake first then split into two orders to avoid the $200 import fees on my $1500 order.

    • I never know that Amazon have order status of "preparing for shipment". All I can see is Ordered date/time > Shipped > Out for Delivery > Arriving date.

      • +3

If you go to Your Orders, you'll see an Invoice link. Click "View printable order summary" under that and you will see "Preparing for Shipment" status in the header of the first table.

        • Oh I see it now, mine is also showing Preparing for Shipment, also Credit card being charged with Pending status, looks promising.

  • +2

Just got charged as well, order still not updated to dispatched though. I’m way too excited over this.

    • I also just got charged. Looking promising!

    • Orders are shipped 🎉

  • Missed the deal but congrats to those who got one.

  • 4x 20TB to New Zealand. Credit card got pending charge this evening, hopefully will go through. Our deal is not as good because we have to pay GST on top of amazon price regardless of the threshold.

    Item(s) Subtotal:$1,195.96
    Delivery:$41.14
    Total Before GST:$1,237.10
    Estimated GST:$185.56
    Total:$1,422.66
    Promotion(s) Applied:-$116.07
    Grand Total:$1,306.59 (AUD)

    • +1

Australians have to pay GST as well, it's just that theirs is 10% and ours is 15%. Amazon AU only shows AU GST even when you're shipping to NZ on their site before checkout when it's an item from Amazon global. For items from Amazon AU and third party sellers they now show NZ GST on the website if it's set to ship to NZ.

Good to know for next time I take my RAID server across the detch…

  • +1

Order 2 x 12TB, still not marked as shipped, but I'm hopeful.
I didn't realise what a cracker of a deal this is until it was gone. Hopefully most people get their orders. :)

    • Yay, finally shipped. Now just wish i could get more at same price ;)

  • +1

My 2 orders for a total of 6 x 16TB Pros just moved to shipped status, payment taken and invoiced.

  • +1

Woot woo, my 4 x 20TB dispatched today. So seems like they honoured it. Now thinking to either replace my entire current 16TB NAS Drives with this or buy another NAS Server in addition so have 2 servers. Tips?
Also any tips Ozb community on how I can copy all my data from current NAS to these drives if I just upgrade current NAS if I just stick to 1 server? Was seeking backup sites but thought I'd ask here what people have done when upgrading their current NAS drives? I use mainly as plex server

    • +1

What exactly have you got on your current (64gb?) NAS?

      • +1

        Thanks @UncleRico
No it's a total space of 16TB not 64TB. I have lots of Asian Movies & Series, Spanish Series and movies plus heaps of Anime, Educational and language videos etc. I do have English movies and series but mainly those that aren't available on streaming or no longer available on streaming. I also have a lot of my games and Karaoke files there as a backup. Lastly a lot of my travel videos.

        • +1

Cool. You’re gonna have room for a lot more now. Enjoy…

    • +1

Are your NAS drive bays all full ?
If you have 4 free bays, just add the new drives.
If you don't have free bays, then just grab a 4 bay USB enclosure, put the new drives in, then add that to your NAS.

      • Thanks @Nom
Yes all 4 bays in my current NAS are used so no space.
Had no idea these days they even had 4 Bay USB enclosures but if I'm spending that much shouldn't I just buy a new server to future proof?

        • An 8 bay NAS costs $$$$…

    • -1

If you are using one of those consumer NAS like a Synology/Qnap, then you cannot upgrade the capacity of the array. You will have to backup all your data somewhere, then copy it to the new 4x20TB array.

This is where custom-built NAS running an OS like Unraid come in handy; you can very easily add drives to a pre-existing array. On top of this, you get a significantly more powerful machine capable of running VMs, hardware transcoding and more.

You could even go one step further and run TrueNAS/zfs for the absolute best data protection you can get. Expanding your array is not as trivial as it is with Unraid, but it's still much more flexible than a Synology or a Qnap, and more importantly, much better for preserving data integrity.

      • +3

This is not necessarily correct. If you're running some form of redundant array such as RAID 5 or 6 or the Synology one SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) 1 or 2 you can just replace 1 drive at a time. You remove a drive, rebuild the array and keep going. In the case of a typical RAID the usable space won't increase until you've replaced all of the drives and it will form according to the smallest sized drive. SHR on the other hand can make use of the space immediately and shift the parity data automatically.

        • +1

Yes, that is correct, I have a Qnap and expanded my raid array with one by one sync.

        • Netgear ReadyNAS does a similar thing for their hybrid system.

They’re ten year old tech, but I’m genuinely surprised there aren’t more people still using them. Not least since you could get a solid, empty four drive enclosure for less than $300 back in the day. NAS prices certainly haven’t dropped like most pc hardware in recent years…

  • +1

My 5 x 12TB shipped today. Looking forward to my first NAS build.

    • I ordered the same, haven't shipped yet but getting close. Upgrading to a Synology 1522+ from a 10+ year old 1512+, which is still going strong but no longer receives software updates.

      Edit: Order has shipped.

  • +2

    5 x 16TB is on its way now :)
