  • Thanks OP! Absolute bargain.

I've gone ahead and purchased 3x12TB to replace my 2x8TB IronWolfs. Seems crazy that the 3x12TB work out to the same cost as the 2x8TB was!

  • Given they have been up for 10 hours, through an American business day, I would be surprised at this point if they are cancelled.

  • -1

Very very tempted, but I think I'll hold off to replace my current 2x8TB setup with SDDs once price comes down a bit more (even though I'm starting to get some integrity errors on the current drives…).

    • +2

SSD won't get close to this price per TB in the next 5 years, also these are quite faster than normal HDD's at up to 285MB/s.

This price seems to be input as the USD instead of AUD, they are about 2/3 the normal sale price.

      • Yes, SSDs won't be quite as cheap but still cheap enough with prices coming down steadily.

I'm so ready to say goodbye to mechanical HDD noise, I have a very quiet setup with Noctua fans now (with the HDDs being the only remaining noise-maker).

      • USD???? All prices are definitely AUD.

        • +1

The AUD sale price is the same as the Amazon US website in USD, US$250 & A$250.

Which indicates someone put them on sale and entered the same price unit for the AU store, this is sold by Amazon US via Amazon AU in AUD and our AUD price matches the Amazon US USD price.

  • +1

I have about a dozen 1tb/2tb drives I'd like to sell. They still work.

What's the quickest way to remove all the data so that it's irrecoverable?
Just Windows built in format with the "quick format" option unticked?

    • I dunno about quickest. Isn't there tools that will write random 1's and 0's over every sector? Do that a few times and there should be no magnetic trace of your existing data.

I'm not sure that doing it once via Windows formatting would be ideal. As far as I'm aware windows just writes zeros to every sector.

    • If you are going to do anything other than destroy old HDD's, you need to use either bleachbit or ccleaner.

      • -2

        Do not follow this advice.

      • +2

        Use Dban

      • Or use another program suggested, but there is nothing wrong with these two.

    • +1

      Use ShredOS. Easiest way.

    • -3

Put a drill through them because they are almost worthless.

      • +2

I'd rather just give them away for free.

  • Thanks OP

  • Bought 2 x 20TB, thanks OP.

  • +1

Wow, What a deal !!. Thanks OP. Grabbed 3x12 TB ( as i was late to see this post ) for a NAS.

Now have to wait for DS920+ or DS923+ Deal

    • in the same boat!

  • Will this be an overkill as internal backup drive inside the PC?

    • +3

      These are ideal for backups.

      • +1

I meant not in a NAS, stand alone?

        • +2

It will be fine as an internal for backup or any other purposes, they are simply better drives at below normal prices.

          • +1

            @Jimbuscus: perfect, thanks

          • +2

@Jimbuscus: Yes, and these are more reliable and less likely to failed.

  • Ended up buying 2 20TBs, Current setup is all 12TBs but 12TB from this deal is not Pro version which only has 3 year warranty, also, is the non-pro version liminted to 8 per Nas is true? If it is it's truly a bummer to me, although my 8 out of 10 occupied now for my Synology. I used SHR II so the more bay I use the less wasted for redundency.

    • Non-Pro is up to 8, Pro is 24.

      • I mean it will warn you when you expand the array? How about I use a mix of them? Personally I don’t think NAS system would put a limit on the number of drives used, like the advertising “up to 16TBx4 but if you put 20TB in it it’s perfectly fine?

Edited: it seems like only the “total vibrations” of the 12TBs for the non-pro version is not tested and not recommended by Seagate, there would be no hard limit on how many drives you put in your nas

        https://superuser.com/questions/1550254/why-is-there-an-8-ba…

  • Thanks for the alert, OP. Topped up with 20TB.

  • Pulled the trigger on the 12TB. I should be sorted now for at-least another year.

  • Has anyone's 8TB shipped yet? Mine are just sitting there

    • It's after 6pm in USA. Everyones gone home.

      • Ah that makes sense. Just weird that the larger capacity models have shipped for some people.

      • Amazon warehouses do night shift :)

    • Ordered 4x18Tb's around 5:30am - received the shipping email about 9:50am…

      • +2

Ordered hours before you did but have yet to receive any shipping confirmation.

        • Doh - different warehouse maybe? Have you been charged yet (it hit my credit card 10-15 minutes after I ordered).

    • +1

Ordered the 8TB Ironwolf at 3:41am. Still no update.

      • My 8T is on its way. Shipped at 8.08 am AU.

    • Bought a drive from Amazon US April 1, they didn't ship until April 13. Mind you, once it was shipped, UPS got it delivered here in less than 5 days.

    • Ordered 2 X 8TB at around 4.30am and they were shipped by 9.50am

  • Just ordered 2 x 20TB IronWolf Pro for $624.89. That's nuts. Thanks OP 😁

  • This is perfect thankyou!
Bought 2x 12TB - 2 of my NAS drives died a few weeks ago

  • do you think 4 * 20tb drives will work in a DS920+?

  • +2

Omg finally pulled the trigger and bough 4 20TB. Thanks OP and ozb community as purchased 2 each time for the 5% discount, just in case it didn't apply on all 4 purchased at once.

  • +1

    Pricing error.

You can see what happened here. They forgot to change the price from USD to AUD, because the sale at amazon.com reflects the same price in USD.

    https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-IronWolf-20TB-Internal-Drive/…

Same price in USD to what I paid AUD for the 20tb.

They've now changed the price to reflect the proper values.

    • My only confidence is that they stayed up for 12 hours, mostly during US work hours.

Even if it was a pricing error, it still should be within cost price.

      • +2

Even if it’s over the cost, daddy Jeff will be there for you

  • I already had 2 x 8TB on the way (which I paid $217 for each) so I contacted Amazon and was able to get a refund of the price difference

    • +1

That's very comforting regarding the talk about canceling orders, I'm fairly sure we'll get our HDD's now.

  • I bought 4x12TB, but it still hurts knowing the 16TB and 18TB were pro models and STILL better price per GB.

    • There is no major difference apart from warranty

      • I know, but guess what? Warranty is especially important with HDDs. An extra two years is potentially huge.

        • Fail rate within 5 years is normally 1%, so I would not care too much.

  • Daamn, I was juts about hte buy a 12tb for 180 bucks and it was no longer on sale

    • yeah same. they were 180 when i added them to my cart, but the time i got around to purchasing, they were up to like 315 each

    • -6

Now you can pray for the orders to be cancelled because of a pricing error.

      • +2

Yeah that would give me a bit of guilty pleasure - think they call it schadenfreude over in kraut land

  • I couldn't seem to buy any when I first saw this deal 2 hours ago. Not that it matters, I can't log in to my Amazon account while overseas as I don't have my original sim with me.

    • VPN?

      • VPN worked for me but only because my browser was still logged in. Otherwise they SMS my sim.

      • I don't think i've logged into amazon on my laptop, so It would just ask for a code anyway.

  • Grabbed a 20g, this does seem like some sort of price error hah, how much are they usually?

    • +1

Last sale price was A$643, normally $800/$900.

      • I'd say a fairer comparison would be the US price. As mentioned in some posts, it is basically the same but in USD. Considering conversion and GST, I'd say ~$A550 would be the proper price for this deal. I'm not an expert on US prices but since it's still available at that price after I think over a week or two and there hasn't been any fuss on the Datahoarders subreddit I don't think US$328 is a spectacular price in the US. So it's a great deal for sure and almost definitely an error. But not quite half price A$643 would suggest.

Note the 20TB price is probably going down in USD terms with the new 22TB until it beats or matches the 18TB in a $/TB.

        • The 20TB Ironwolf Pro is for sale at A$849 at most Australian tech retailers, A$550 is a fairer price.

  • The deal just ended. Missed out by that much.

  • My 3 orders have all shipped. Fantastic deal!

    • when did you order if you dont mind sharing.
my order is still not shipped yet (ordered about 4 hours ago)

      • I ordered last night

        • ok thanks!

        • +3

What time last night? I ordered at 1.41am and they haven't shipped yet.

          • @Trance N Dance: I ordered about the same time as you. 2x 18TB.

I haven't got a shipping notice, or been charged yet. Haven't been cancelled either.

            It's Schrödinger's Amazon order atm.

            • @Chris McMahon: I have a pending CC transaction of zero dollars from Amazon Australia, it's not a new CC either.

              It's strange.

            • +1

@Chris McMahon: Seems like they're just shipping orders randomly, I see that other 8TB orders made after me have been shipped.

              • @Trance N Dance: My cc was charged ~2pm today and I got a shipping notice ~12am.

Looks like Amazon is honouring all the orders, by the others also posting shipping notices here.

  • I'm currently running an old Synology DS1512+ with 5x4GB WD Reds, one of which is showing signs that it's about to bite the dust.

    So I've purchased 5x 12TB Seagate's (thanks OP!).

Looking to upgrade the NAS, mainly for backing up photos/videos & serving movies to an NVIDIA Shield.

Any recommendations, won't really need transcoding, so I'm safe going with the latest Ryzen based Synology NAS's? TIA

  • Bought 2 drives (and a book). Arriving Tue, 2 May

  • It was hard to pass up on such a great bargain but I didn’t really need these (still wanted these though). I wonder why are we so attracted to storage space so much as humans.

    • +3

we're hoarders and don't want to delete anything.

  • missed out on this :(

  • Damn how did I miss this :((((

    • Some of the links were sold out by 4am, most of them gone by the time anyone I messaged woke up.

  • has anyone's order been cancelled yet?

    • No, one user got a pricematch refund by Amazon for a recent order and another has had theirs already shipped, it's not too absurd a price and it looks like it will be fulfilled.

Storage pricing is anticipated to fall soon with excess stock, they are likely taking advantage of the current price precedent while they still can.

      • What's a price match refund?

        • +1

They did a partial refund on the previous order, bringing it down to the same price.

          • @Jimbuscus: Oh wow, how do you claim this? And does it have to be within a certain timeframe?

            • @snoopydoop: There is no guarantee, they sometimes agree in chat and often say no.

  • They just took the money out of my account. Hasn't shipped yet but from my experience, they only take the money out when they are about to ship it is looking good.

My experience with previous pricing errors from Amazon is that they don't take your money before cancelling the order.

    • Which model and what time did you order?

      • I ordered 4x 12tb and ordered around 5 - 6am this morning.

    • +1

IIRC Amazon.com has cancelled orders which were dispatched before so it's theoretically possible. No idea if this has ever happened for Amazon US via Amazon AU thought.

      • Silly question but does this mean they're just returned to Amazon internally before they're delivered? Or does it arrive and they ask you to return it?

        • +2

If it hasn't been delivered they get whoever it's currently with to return it to the Amazon. I don't think they bother asking you to return it if you've received it, too many problems with that. (Although there was a retailer in NZ which tried that.)

I was thinking in particular of this infamous incident back in May 2019 https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/bqecrt/wd_my_b… https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/bsxol8/amazon_… That was an interesting case because like this it involved multiple different drives, Amazon.com took a long time to deal with it, and at least some people had theirs shipped. (While some of the drives went out of stock quickly, others were up for at least 4 hours or so. And they didn't tell people they cancelled until for several days) I don't see anyone mentioning theirs was shipped but later cancelled in either of those threads so I could be remembering wrong. But there are a lot of threads on that deal including a Slickdeals one I'm lazy to find and even lazier to search though.

I did find in the OzBargain thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7287101/redir and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7301135/redir where people confirmed it had happened with other errors.

In this case, error or not I think the relatively small numbers as only people in Australia and NZ took advantage of it may be to our advantage. I mean if they take 6 days to deal with it like last time, hopefully a bunch will be delivered before they deal with it :p

  • My 2x16TB ordered at 0839 NZT/0639 AET with delivery to NZ have been dispatched according to Amazon

    • +4

I think you're meant to be on NZBargain :)
