DESCRIPTION
Seiko 5 Sports GMT Mens Black Grape SKX Re-Interpretation SSK001K1 Stainless Steel Case and Bracelet Automatic Movement Watch with GMT functionality. First released in the 90s, the SKX Seiko 5 Sports watches were a modernised version of the classics – updating the reliability and durability of the 1960s originals. The 90s collection offered improved practicality – enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystals along with luminous hands and hour markers.

The bi-colour 24-hour bezel is coated in Hardlex, to ensure durability while the GMT hand improves practicality, visibility and legibility. The beads of rice bracelet remains true to the SKX heritage with a five-piece link design that forms a series of small X-shaped patterns. Designed for practical international timekeeping, the GMT hand and high visibility hour markers, along with clear 24-hour bezel, mean multiple time zone calculations can be made at a glance, quickly and easily.

The SKX001 is powered by the Seiko 4R34 automatic with manual winding movement with an approximate power reserve of 41 hours. The case size is 42.5mm with thickness of 13.5mm and a lug width of 22mm. The SKX001K features a see-through case back, screw case back and a rotating bezel. The clasp is three fold with a secure lock. The hands and indices are coated in LumiBrite – fluorescent luminous paint which quickly absorbs light energy, glowing brighter and longer in partial light. LumiBrite starts glowing brightly in the dark and fades slowly.

      A Tissot what?

        • +12

Not a GMT movement. There simply are no automatic GMT movements that can touch the 4R34 when it comes to price.

          • -2

@henno: For a good reason. It's not an accurate movement. Something this unrefined can't get basic functions of the watch working accurately. In comparison to the powermatic which is even more accurate than seikos 6r series.
He has very legitimate points and people are dismissing him which is unfortunate.
From a calibre perspective Seiko 4r series are not great at all and personally wouldn't own one anymore after dumping my presage which was utterly useless. Would gain over 10 minutes in a month.
For the ones buying Seiko, if getting a 4r series it's much more for fashion than function.
I would probably just go an eco drive GMT over this.

    • +2

I was thinking better to buy 5 versions of the SD1970 for a different watch Monday to Friday.

      • +1

No need, perfection already achieved with Green sd1970

      • Honestly the 1970 performs just as good as any 4r series for a fraction of the price

    • Which Tissot
      No idea

    • I'm going to agree with you on this and say for a 4r series this watch is not as good as something like a Tissot powermatic.

    • Depends - those RAV4s are pretty good… anything more and you'd want a full blown G-wagon if you're looking to make a statement.

    • +2

You would rather a Tissot? I would rather a Seiko than a Tissot…..
We aren't all going to fork out $20-100k on a watch champ.

      • +5

He wouldn’t even have a watch. Just a little troll with no idea.

        • -4

Not trolling. I actually have a Seiko kinetic sitting in some drawer. Also multiple smart watches. Just saying, certain items are statement pieces which you shouldn’t cheap out on. Watches being a classic example

          • +3

@mlburnian: I like to make a statement by wearing my Skmei.

          • +2

@mlburnian: Why did you buy so many watches that aren’t statement pieces? It goes against your personal preference for watches that you must spend big for it to be a statement so all your friends look at your watch and gasp. Watches aren’t fashion or stylistic, they are literally only a statement of wealth to you. Ignore function and design! Only $$$$$

      • -5

No but you can fork out 1 to 3k on a nice Swiss automatic

        • +3

I would rather buy 3-6 cool watches than a single Swiss $3k watch. Each to their own though, I guess some only see value in throwing money.

        • +3

Lmao do you think 1-3k Swiss watches are a statement piece, holy shit lol

          • +2

@dstar012: TFW the lower middle class tries to flex on the lower class…

            • +4

@mapax: On my super yacht, I have my staff put 3k Swiss watches on my guest bedrooms pillows like little mints.

          • -1

@dstar012: More so than a brand which sells 100 dollar watches. Yes, a 3k watch you wear daily will get noticed

            • +2

@mlburnian: Where? On shift at McDonalds?

            • @mlburnian: Maybe noticed, maybe in a positive way, maybe in a negative way.

              What's your daily driver?

      • Id rather a tissot and have one in fact, they are great value and Swiss made. Most Seikos are well overpriced and under speced but ok for half RRP. Most still don't have sapphire crystal (like this one which is $900 lol), they cheap out on the bracelets and clasps, old movements but must say the face and dials are usually pretty nice.

Depends on the watch and style but bit of a funny comment. Some people are very brand loyal which is fine. Have a look at the seastar Powermatic 80.

      • What , that much for a Tissot ? Don't know you've got that price range from .

        • Haha yea no way hey, it’s just the commenter I was replying to has said numinous times that Seiko is too cheap, and that you should spend far more to make it a statement of wealth.

    • so you know nothing about watches OR cars. thanks for clarifying.

  • -7

Also luxury brand watches can be an investment

    • +5
      • +2

Is it better than the Casio F91W? I was sent to Guantanamo for wearing one when entering US customs

      • +1

Damn straight that is . It probably costs more to manufacture. You can flip this for at least 200% profit.

    • +2

What on earth are you on about?

    • +1

yes, they can but you have to know something about watches to pick the right ones that will go up in value….which you don't.

    • +2

Only a FEW brands actually appreciate in value. And besides, most are a pain in the ass to obtain - took me 5 years to get my first Patek, and a hellhole - never again
Rolex ADs dont fare much worse, they will demand you buy $10k of jewelry before considering you on the list. Omega is one of the better ones, good availability on most models.

  • -4

Looks like lots of seiko and Toyota lovers on ozb…very sensible lot

    • +2

Seiko watches are the standard of day to day watches period.
I have probably bought well over 40-50 Seiko watches, the value for the Japanese movements that you get CANNOT BE BEATEN.
And the Grand Seiko's, especially the new Spring Drives are something of its own league.

Go back to your Rolls Royce and Rolex

      • Sounds like my dad who only buys Sony AV equipment.

Grand Seikos are up there though but so is the price.

I like the idea and look of 4 handers, but don't travel enough these days to warrant a second time zone.

      • Honestly Seiko of this calibre is definitely not same league as Grand Seiko.
I actually would disagree in saying these mass market automatics are actually the worst thing from Seiko. On this end of the price range it's much better to stick to Solars or Quartz.
The only seiko autos that can be recommended to some extent would be anything above a 6r series but if we are comparing to GS it would be the 8 series movements.
Even GS tried to break away from Seiko division as they were deemed the only watch to challenge Swiss accuracy from Japanese world ..
Now they are just some of the most amazing watches in leagues with and above things like Rolex.
I have a lot of respect for GS. Not so much for seiko

        • Not disagreing but aren't GS about 10x the price of a normal seiko?

Don't know if it's 10x as good, but most would find themselves buying a Swiss brand or something in the next tier if spending 10k. Omega is one example.

Also agree that solar/quarts/mecha-quartz are great work horses and pretty accurate, oh and inexpensive.

I think people are confusing the Seiko 4R35/36 for the brand new 4R34 GMT movement . There is nothing that comes close in this category before you start spending quite a bit more on the bigger swiss brands. The only alternatives have been a few chinese movements that aren't the greatest.

          • @G-rig: GS is on the same tier of things like Rolex, and only top tier omega.
It's still a very inaccurate watch.
And yes GS is about 10x the price hence why I mentioned to the above poster that they are not really in the same league.
But as I also mentioned an solar/eco-drive GMT would be better than the 4r34.
You would go with this only because you like the design not because the auto movement is good.
However even as you indicated below for a GMT movement auto. Something like the Christopher ward (3x price) is substantially better. The ETA movement is reliable and accurate enough to make it worth having an auto

            • +1

@maverickjohn: All good mate, GS are beautiful - I haven't looked into them but they probably start at more than I was thinking.

I really like that CW watch I mentioned, A$1500 probably not that bad- have an Oris Aquis on ebay - after a better fit these days and it's a little bit big my wrist. Would even get rid of that and the blue Seastar to get a Black Bay 54/58 for simplicity of one watch I'd wear more.

I got a Cronos 'Explorer' 36mm that looks the business for A$180, nice if they had a NH38 (without NH35 and ghost date) but they are still good enough and cheap movements to buy/replace. The next step up would be those Loriers (Falcon SIII) with a 9 series miyota, but US$499 getting a bit much for a homage.

Watches are still a bit more fashion over function these days anyway, if you have a phone in your pocket & clock on the PC.

    • +2

Why do you keep doubling down on this. Seiko is a great brand google it for yourself and learn something. Or you already have and have come to your conclusion in this case we are the sensible lot and you're being foolish.

  • +1

    no sapphire crystal no deal.

    • +1

RRP $875 and still no sapphire crystal.. unreal.
Already got a Pagani Daytona, sapphire nice bracelet and Seiko Meca-quartz that keeps amazing time, wouldn't have cost more than about $120.

Would have to get rid of it if I were to get another similar crono, can't imagine a market for used homages though.

    • No need for sapphire at this price point

My SKx007 has been my daily beater for 10 plus years and the glass still looks perfect. And i take this thing overseas, diving and sporting activities too.

I had a Tag Heuer Many years ago for 3-4 times the price and it had a sapphire crystal but still managed to get a scratch on the glass.

  • Dammit, too slow to the party. I would have got that SSC741 Prospex in a heartbeat.

  • -2

This is overwhelmingly overpriced for the specifications , there are much better options for this money . Aesthetically pleasing but too expensive even on sale !

    • No shortage of mods to make this into what it should be with 5kx pqrts. You shouldn't have to when spending this much already but easy to upgrade at least.

The 4r34 is an important good movement, and a heap of watches will come from it with the NH34.

      Other options here:

Top 10 GMT watches under $1000!

I don't mind that Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT in black and orange..

    • +1

What automatic caller GMTs are available at this price point?

    • +2

Overpriced? Name one in-house auto GMT priced better.

      • Yes it's a fair deal for a good new japanese GMT movement, just the usual Seiko quality issues and lack of spec.
Like all Seikos, never pay RRP aim for about half of that :).
Easy to mod to and upgrade the things that are lacking (like the glass).
Put a double domed blue sappire on the tuna padi and it looks like a more expenisve watch. Stock / flat was still alright though but would have got sapphire anyway.
