  • Wow look at that TBW 💋

This or the PNY for secondary storage? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/770125

I'd go the TeamGroup one - 2400TBW compared to 900TBW. For secondary storage, longevity > speed

      • +2

I would disagree with that statement as it really depends on usage, i.e. game drive for secondary storage or just storage of photos / videos.
I would take the faster drive, save myself $20 and enjoy knowing that I am highly unlikely to ever use over 250gb per day over 10 years continuously to wear out this drive.
I'm starting to reply to all these comments as most people are lucky to get through 10gb per day…..

EDIT: To put in another way you would need to fill 12% of the hard drive every day for 10 years to reach the TBW.

        • Agreed. I'm more likely to upgrade and sell my older drives before getting a fraction near the advertised tbw.

          • @shiny1: I upgrade my older drives due to size limitations, not speed or endurance restrictions

            • @Sleepycat3: That's the point I was making. By the time I'm ready to upgrade, my drive is probably over 8 years old and laughable in size by that time's standards. And the tbw? Not even a blip on the radar.

The Teamgroup is TLC with DRAM so won't suffer slowdowns with large file writes.
It's better quality so will likely be more reliable.
Also you probably need a Gen 4 slot to get the higher speeds. If you've only got a gen 3, you probably won't get much benefit from the PNY

            @FireRunner: It's only 128MB of DDR3 for 4TB, compared to a 970 Evo Plus's 1GB DDR4 for 2TB. So it is a much smaller amount of DRAM.

Installed mine last night and copied 1.5TB to it in a surprisingly short period, it didn't seem to slow down too much over time.

    • Same here. The Acasis TB3 enclosure I had it in was too hot to hold when it was finished (1.1TB) but mine was copying over the network so couldn’t get an idea on throughput. I’ll be connecting it up to a MAC later today so am hoping for a nice surprise.

      • enclosure I had it in was too hot to hold when it was finished

That'll kill the drive fairly quickly, find a better enclosure.

  • Ordered one. Sorted out my steam drive.

Mine just arrived. Teamgroup has a 4TB MP34 firmware update available on their website which addresses a media integrity error SMART reporting bug (sounds similar to what happened to the 980 Pro). Was a quick update and I am copying files over now.

  • The deal is expired now, back up to $339

      $339 is still a good price for a 4TB drive 👍
