Tokyo, Japan Return: Melbourne from $664, Sydney from $679 on China Southern (Guangzhou Stopover) May-June @ Beat That Flight

1231

China Southern is a very well rated airline, I'd argue one of the best out of China, and has nice new planes too (Dreamliners, A350s etc). A full service, bags included fare to Tokyo in the $600s is pretty fantastic. (Some search results say baggage unknown, but when you click through to buy it has it included)

For accommodation, I recommend our article on the top 5 most popular Tokyo hotels for under AU$120.

For the dates with long layovers, consider China Southern's FREE transit accommodation option

    great price! masssive layover though..

    • +5

China Southern provides free transit accommodations, see my comments below! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13680065/redir

      • I'd like to add their free transit accommodation deal is not applicable to the lower ticket fares… for example if you're flying in Economy class T you won't be able to claim at the guangzhou counter.

        "Passengers flying in a cabin W/ S/ Y/ P/ B/ M/ H/ K/ U/ A/ L/ Q/ E/ G on intercontinental routes are entitled to a Grade C or D partnered hotel of China Southern Airlines"

    • +1

It's great that Chinese airlines are back in Australia. Hopefully it will lower the prices to Europe as well.

  • +7

Looks like one of the best deals to Japan in a while. Full service with bags, and only a couple of hours waiting for the next flight, compared to some of the other deals where the layovers were huge (almost a day)

The airport at Guangzhou (CAN) looks OK with 4 stars on Google. You also fly into Haneda which is another bonus.

      • +1

But this is also from Melbourne which ANA doesn't do. Plus the price for ANA is $500 more, quite significant. Seats are also wider in China Southern's A350s compare to ANA 9 breast 787.

        • +7

*Abreast might be the word you want in this context ;)

    • +3

only a couple of hours waiting for the next flight

i just picked a random one from the above links, the flight time was 35.5 hrs… thats a little bit more than a couple of hours

      • I picked the top melbourne one, and thats was just over 20 each way. You must have selected the Sydney one.

        • +6

          lol it's a 10 hour flight direct

          • +2

@wots: yeah I think people are missing the lost time actually on the plane haha

            • @drprox: last I looked ANA offered business class to Japan - 10 hour flight for $3300 compared to maybe $1300 economy - looked like only $200ph extra for a nicer layback seat, slightly better food, and linen tablecloths

              • @Hangryuman: I paid $1300 for exit row seats with the extra leg room so I can completely stretch out and no toilet queues. Plus ANA economy gives me 2x 32kg checked bags each way.

Versus this deal where you lose almost a full day in layover. The same time I could spend exploring Japan. Sometimes paying more is worth it.

  • +3

A350 is good, so is the price with full service

  • -6

do chinese aircrafts allow in japan?

    • +15

      J-20s are definitely not allowed.

    • +3

I think No, unless they carry Americans in the cabin.

  • +15

    9.5 hour layover… no thanks

    • +5
      • +4

if you need to leave the airport that's still sort've incredibly painful

        • +3

maybe to some, but it includes the transportation and a free breakfast, so good for some!

          • +2

            @beatthatflight:

            so good for some!

Land, then 30 minutes to clear customs, then transport to hotel (15min?), then whatever, then transport back to airport (15min?), then checkin - have to be there how many hours before?
Doesn't leave a lot of time for the "whatever". And note that 15min travel time to hotel is more than likely going to be 30+ if you count waiting, dropping off others, etc.

            • +1

@Lord Fart Bucket: last transit hotel I got bussed to was in the middle of the night to the middle of nowhere (everything around it was closed) to some cold unattractive hotel room, with nothing to do but lie down, and then we were woken at some ridiculously early hour like 3am to be bussed back to the airport (I don't remember any breakfast unless it was completely desultory and best not remembered) to wait hours for the next flight - urgh.

      • +1

You will need visa I assume.

      • Unlikely for this price… this will like be a lower ticket fare so the Guangzhou counter will reject your accomodation claim

      • We love the free accommodation layover.

They let us choose the hotel, took us to bus stop, the airline staff were waiting for us at the bus stop.
It took 10 minutes to check in.
We got earlier flight back to Sydney, they packed breakfast for us and the bus was waiting outside.

  • +1

Jan 2024 is just insane to Japan. $2200 for anything with a sensibly short layover; $2500+ for direct.
Crazy prices when flights to Europe at that time are the same or cheaper…

    • +1

Flights don't seem to be too bad this year. Any idea why they're so crazy in January?

      • That's what I'm trying to work out. North America I think also hasn't come down post COVID, so can't quite explain it…

        • +7

Travelling in Asia becomes expensive in Jan-Feb every year as it's tradition to return home for LNY in many SEA cultures.

          • @daowiies: Japan isn't SEA. They don't follow the same traditions either. Most travel back home during Golden Week.

            • @Cyphar: Golden week is more for family holidaying if anything, Obon and New Years are -definitely- much more about getting together as a family at home in Japan too.

              • @GS9891: I lived in Japan for 18 years. While people do go on holidays during Golden Week, many travel back home during that time. Myself included. New Years doesn't have a break long enough that people choose to go home. Obon is a good time though, I agree.

                • @Cyphar: Can vary I guess, and distance is a factor with the shorter new years holiday perhaps, but the trains are definitely just as bad during very late Dec - early January as they are during Golden Week, (and my friends there at least always visit their family in Shimane from Osaka for a week at that time too).

      • +3

Chinese New Year, School Holidays in Australia, people still on extended leave since Christmas.

      • +4

Any idea why they're so crazy in January?

        School holidays and ski season.

      • Peak ski season, school holidays. Some people take leave after Christmas.
It's just traditionally a peak time.
Late March is by far the best time for Japan. Do not travel during Golden week.
You get the cherry blossoms but also the plum blossoms starting as well.
Ski season is winding down but still incredible compared to Australian conditions.

        • In all honesty, Autumn.
You still get fantastic views of Japan especially as the season turns and the leaves go red.

Cherry blossoms while nice means your fighting huge crowds (it's busier than Christmas / New years for touristy things), not to mention everyone is out in force taking photos including locals (where as new years they go home). And if you pollen issues you're going to hate Japan during that period of time.

    • Mate not sure what website u were on but price looks ok for that period. Direct to tokyo 1.6K, a bit cheaper with Jetstar for 1 stop over.

      • Where are you seeing Sydney to Tokyo return direct for 1.6k in Jan 2024 ?!!

        • Fly out 15th or after and return 7th or after then you can get it for 1.9K
Move your forward by a few days and fly back on 12 Feb or after then its 1.6k.

FYI China Airline 1 stop Jan in Jan out can be had for 1.5K. They are fantastic👍. For a few hundred you can have a second holiday in Taiwan as well.

First two to three weeks of Jan always been blanket by peak pricing. International travel 101.

          • @syswong: Fair enough. Doesn't work when you have school aged kids though - back at school end of Jan

            • @grrrrr: Thats why second week of Dec to 3rd week of Jan is always blanketed on peak price. Its the universal high season. You want to travel at these times, you are going to be milked!!

I suggest if you want / need / want to travel in Jan 2024 to Japan then take a closer look at Jetstar and China Airline (Not Air China) fares as they seem reasonable. Jetstar getting the full package is not that bad but of course not SA or ANA standard. If you want full feature airline, China Airline is your best bet for single stop over to Japan. Be quick cos Japan is the most popular holiday destination for Taiwanese and if you do it too late, you will find out (like me) you get cheap price for the Sydney to Taiwan leg but from Taiwan to Tokyo is super high price.

              • @syswong: China Airlines is good no doubt, but Syd-Taipei, Taipei-Osaka or Tokyo and return is only about $300pp cheaper during Jan (total 2.1k) than Syd-Hnd direct return with ANA; not really worth it.

Jetstar - no thanks. Too many horror stories of flights being cancelled (presumably because they don't think it's worth their while to fly that particular day) etc…

Looks like I'll get ready to be milked !

                • @grrrrr: I am seeing more like 1.8K vs 2.6K for CA vs ANA on average Jan in Jan out and that is per head…. but your choice.

You really have to push your return date to first week Feb to get an acceptable price. say last two weeks of Jan and cross into Feb. Depends on what school should just get away with it. You save A LOT!!

  • The long layover in a pretty mediocre airport nearly kills this deal, but flying into Haneda might make it barely tolerable…

    • note that CZ provides free transit accom for long layovers

      • Oh really how long does the layover need to be to be considered long?

      • +5

Be warned, it took my group about 4 hours to get the 48 hour visa at Canton in 2019, for a 9 hour layover, so it was all pretty pointless in the end.

        • +10

It took us about 20mins march this year.

    • Well, we landed in Haneda midnight and it was pretty much dead until 6-7 AM in the morning (unlike Chengi which is probably a true 24 hr airport)

  • Do the Japan covid entry requirement stop for everyone including China?

  • Huge layovers should put that in the header, is it really a deal or just used to to get clicks to your site

    • First flight listed for Melbourne is 23.45h there and 20.55h return. You need to check other days.

    • +5

Deal titles should definitely specify if they're direct or stop over.

      • +3

Like posting a refurbished deal without mentioning it’s refurbished, not hard for op to put in the header “Long Layover”

        • +8

Exactly. It's ridiculous people are downvoting you for something that should be tagged. I've suggested it to the mods.

          • +9

@Clear: they can neg away but the header is clearly misleading to gain clicks, personally over seeing the same long stop over deals by BTF & IWTF not described properly, here's an example below, op's header reads as a normal flight, my modified header cleary describes what the deal is & both fit into header:

Tokyo, Japan Return: Melbourne from $664, Sydney from $679 on China Southern [May to June] @ Beat That Flight

Tokyo, Japan Return: Melb from $664, Syd from $679 on China Southern [May to June, Long Stop Over] @ Beat That Flight

            • +3

@RogueWolf: I agree with you. This particular poster is notorious for these kinds of posts with great headline prices but lots of asterisks further down the page. In this case, they didn't even bother to mention the long layover (or the fact that the flights are into Haneda rather than Narita, which is actually a big boon for this deal).

              • @xyron: agree, if they can put all the work in linking the flights to their site, same time next to it they can mention the flight travel length & if it has multiple stops, 20hrs - 35hrs each way is not normal for these flights, atleast clearly mention that

                what do you think OP?

                • @RogueWolf: The problem sometimes is lets take Cathay Pacific. You could have a 2hr layover or a 20 hour layover. They have multiple connecting flights. How do you title this if it covers both? . Many of the hub airlines have multiple connecting options, it becomes hard to have a consistent rule (what is the definition of a "long layover"?).

I think if you have a direct price then that can go in the title, everything else shouldn't be title but description.

                  • @wackedupwacko: what is the definition of a "long layover"?

a normal travel time for say melb - tokyo is 10hr 30min direct, with a stop on the way through another country you would expect 2hr to 6hr at worst, so when your are advertising deals with 20hr - 35hr travel time each way, think thats the definition of far from normal travel times (long transit/lay over/multiple stops)

think it's a fair request to describe the flights better & not make it out like its a normal flight, you getting what you pay for which is fine, just make it clear in the post

  • dates is to 30 Jun 23, not 24

  • +8

China Southern provides free transit accommodation for layovers over 8 hours (and less than 48 hours). I remembered they also provide logistics between the airport to the hotels for free.

So I would prefer an 18 hours layover!

    • great to know, thanks! Adding in

    • +13

Note, China Southern only offers free accommodation if the fare class in F/J/C/D/I/O/W/S/Y/P/B/M/H/K/U/A/L/Q/E/G - I had to arrange & pay for my own accommodation (~$50/night) as my fare class was Z

      • +1

How do you check fare class when booking?

        • it seems like the cheap Southern China airline tix is not eligible for the free accomodation so i wouldn't say its part of the deal.

    • +4

Be warned, it took my group about 4 hours to get the 48 hour visa at Canton in 2019, for a 9 hour layover, so it was all pretty pointless in the end.

  • Great prices.

I do love a long layover - but in places I want to visit. Guangzhou ain't one. Esp not at 5am

    • +7

As the most important Chinese city at that part of China, Guangzhou is 24/7. Safety and security are absolutely fine even you are single young woman (street smart applies as always)

      • +1

Safety and security are absolutely fine even you are single young woman (street smart applies as always)

        And you're not Uyghur.

      • +2

lol it's not a safety thing, its a 'who wants to be on a long layover that starts at 5am' thing.

Also 'most important Chinese city at that part of China' is not enticing.

  • Thanks for sharing, great deals! Love this airline as well.

  • +1

    And what about Brisbane ?

    • +4

      Yeh. That’s racist

      • -1

its the attack of the Sydney C$^ys again I see excluding. still sore from state of origin its seems lol.

    • China Southern doesn't fly from Brisbane :/ You could connect in MEL/SYD tho.

  • +2

Couldn't find those prices in Jun from MEL. Looks like the stop over times can be quite long which is not ideal also as you'd need to get a visa to get out of the airport.

Fyi: After 00:00 JST on April 5th, 2023, all those who are entering Japan via a direct flight from

  • Just checked out the site to look dates. Once you click on the search feature, it takes you to another page. The adds on that page are insane. They take up half of the page without an option to close the top one. Makes it very difficult to browse. Fortunately, you can close the one at the bottom of the page.

They seriously need to review that. It will just send people elsewhere to search.

  • -1

Hey BTF, anything for Europe this Oct/Nov/Dec?
    Thanks!

  • +4

Sign up for the China Southern rewards program at check-in, they often bump you up to the exit row from this, and then to business class if you are lucky. It works if you are travelling alone. If you are travelling with someone, try and check in separately, but ask for exit rows, they tend to give it to single passengers 1st.

  • +3

For these who looking for free accommodation, please check your ticket class before booking.

I called ChinaSouthern to confirm and they replied that my class is too low to get a free night.

    • What flight class do you have to be to get free accommodation?

    • Where did you book the ticket?

      • byojet

I tried to book from official web and can not get my payment through…

    • How do you check fare class when booking?

      • they showed it on official website when booking. did not notice when I booked with agency.

  • I clicked the 10th - 20th June link from melbourne and it didn't have any China Southern options, only Phillipines Airlines for ~$1200. Found a China Southern option 8th-20th for $685 though.

  • Have anyone take on this route and what was the accommodation like? Did they put you in cheap 2* hotels or in 5 * hotels?
