Tokyo, Japan Return: Melbourne from $664, Sydney from $679 on China Southern (Guangzhou Stopover) May-June @ Beat That Flight

1231

China Southern is a very well rated airline, I'd argue one of the best out of China, and has nice new planes too (Dreamliners, A350s etc). A full service, bags included fare to Tokyo in the $600s is pretty fantastic. (Some search results say baggage unknown, but when you click through to buy it has it included)

For accommodation, I recommend our article on the top 5 most popular Tokyo hotels for under AU$120.

For the dates with long layovers, consider China Southern's FREE transit accommodation option

  • I flew with them a decade ago and there wasn't much leg room. Can anyone comment on how's it looking these days?

    • I used to fly to Guangzhou every year with CS before Covid. I'm a big guy and I felt the leg room was adequate.

Only thing I don't like is the Baiyun airport, although it's zillion times better than the old airport, but I still enjoy HK airport and the convenience of intown check-in.

      • Was in HK 3 weeks ago, in town check in was suspended still. Airport mainly up and running…. probably about 75% of shops are open now, but they are all designer luxury boutique stores, so nothing of interest

        • Thanks for letting me know. I'm planning to travel this year so might just fly Guangzhou direct. I heard PCR in not needed anymore, RAT is enough.

I've tried to book with those dates they are all showing $730 then when i try to book the link doesn't even work

Had the worse airport experience of my life on a transit in Beijing, flying from Japan to France a few years ago, from a China Southern flight. Flight was okay, although some passengers clearly had WAY more carry-on than what other airlines permit (I would question their load capacity standards). Will never set foot in a Chinese airport again. Getting to the gate was chaos (worse than CDG in Paris if that means anything to you travellers), and customs agents were insanely rude. They didn't talk to you, only gestures, which included literally throwing my passport back at me. What a sh*thole.

    • +2

CDG is a chaotic, confusing shitshow so that says a lot.

  • i don't think the links works? can't find these flights anywhere

Great to see Chinese airlines back in the Australian market. Without their competition prices have skyrocketed over the last year.

    • Yup. You'd be crazy to fly them but they do a lot to bring down the costs or proper airlines.

I'm looking at Southern/Eastern China airlines for several routes. They look attractive at first but when you factor out the cost (and risk) of getting pre-departure COVID tests, they aren't worth it. My friend paid 140$ in Sydney for the test to fly to China. Not sure how much it costs in Japan to get test n certificate in English

    • -1

Just get the third dose and you will be clear on the Japanese entrance requirement.

      • I'm talking about tests required even for layover in China. It might change since last time I checked

    • You won't need a PCR test after Apr 29 (for flights into China)

      • May I ask where you find this info ? I literally called China Embassy last week n they told me tests are required even for layover.

        • +2

Check this article on the website of the China Consulate which was announced this week

          http://sydney.china-consulate.gov.cn/eng/ggl/202304/t2023042…

          • @Imposter: F### me, it was published a few days late I already made bookings with another airline…

        • Authorities in mainland China will replace the current COVID-19 PCR test requirement for all inbound travelers with an antigen rapid test (ART) from April 29. Passengers must take an ART 48 hours before boarding their flight; airlines will no longer check the COVID-19 test results of passengers.
As you can also find in Chinese embassy Melbourne website( Chinese version, just google and translate the page). But it yet not announced in the English version webpage.

    • Japan is dropping all Covid related entry requirements May 8 2023, not sure about China though.

My experiences with the Chinese airlines Eastern/Southern were decent but oh damn China Airlines (Taiwan) that one takes the cake for unprofessionalism….

Nonetheless zero use of Boeing is why you fly these. Worth the price let alone they are also the cheapest around.

I just recently fly China Airlines to Japan. New aircraft, good entertainment system, polite (and pretty) carbine crew and excellent food for econ standard.

You get none of that with the PRC airlines. They are just budget full feature airline. Ah wait they do have pretty cabin crew, but the ones you see in economy are just waiting for their chance to move on to fish their pot of gold, so most of them have no intension of giving you a goo dservices.

      • +1

Nah cabin crew is always easy and reasonable. Almost no airline will give you poor basic service. It's like complaining about waiter services versus what's done in the kitchen, you'll never see if the cook spits in your food or not but you'll definitely know if a waiter screws up.

It's what they do on the ground that will screw you up hard.

Try missing baggage and then extortion and attempt to trick you against their own T&Cs on another flight and being asked to pay $500 15minutes before boarding. Then you'll witness who they are.

I am currently undergoing action against them. Wouldn't mind posting the story on Ozb once it resolves.

But I bet a lot of Ozb won't want to hear stories like that because it goes against their narrative.

        • What's the OzB narrative??

      • I did my Japan trip using China airlines and Taipei layover. They have a selection of meal choices and they have given priority to them. Some stewards gave the wrong food (asking chicken rice and they will gave you something else). Apart from that Taipei layover is a good opportunity to visit.

    • -3

Haha someone got triggered because typed something about Taiwan

That's just sad. Get out and enjoy the sun mate.

      • +2

I can understand why you are getting downvoted, because China Airlines has nothing to do with the deal at hand.

It's been well-publicised that China Airlines has a terrible safety track record. https://flightfox.com/tradecraft/worlds-deadliest-airlines-d…

        • I'll make sure never to fly their Airbus 300-600

  • Super bargain for China Easten and Chin Southern. Looks like they started going back to their pre covid pricing structure. Unfortunately that boat has sailed forever for me.

Check a few date on Skyscanner, in general on the same given dates, budget airline with full package is faster and $ 200-300 more. So it comes down to paying $200-300 more or get arrested / kidnap and put in jail, could "accidentally" losing a few organs as well….. hmm decision decision decision!!

  • Despise that airline with a passion. Went Europe with them never again

  • I did this a few years ago, in hindsight, I probably would have just preferred to fork out the extra for a direct. China Southern were fine, but the lay over just sucked. Esp that Japan is (relatively) so close. So maximise your time off work and fork out a bit extra for a direct flight (if you can)

  • Does the booking take place on a third party site after clicking on the “select” site - in this case mytrip? It’s not directly with BTF?

  • I flew China Southern CZ 302 in 2018 and boy their plane rattled a lot! And the cabin crew wore a cam at random times through out the flight - just found it weird.

    • What plane was it though

    • Likely the cam is armed with facial recognition software to record everyone that is on the plane and upload to CCP during the flight so they know if any unwelcome passenger is on the flight. Great country Great airline!!

  • China Southern is no longer a Skyteam member since 2020

  • May I please know how to get those prices? Clicked on the links and cannot see anything reflecting these posted prices.

  • dates are too long. i want to visit, not live there, lol
