  • Any ideas about battery life? I need a non-gaming work laptop (and the RTX 3050 is pretty unnecessary for me) but this seems like a great price?

    • +2

Would the M1 MacBook Air be in your budget/suit your needs?

      • +11

I'm super tempted by the M1/M2 laptops but can't stand MacOS…

        • +7

What don’t you like about it? (Genuine question.) I use Windows at work and MacOS at home and I don’t find one to be any worse or superior to the other. They each have their strengths & weaknesses, about the only thing I struggle with is keyboard combos and remembering to use Command on a Mac instead of CTRL for most of them.

          • +7

@Chazzozz: I'm very comfortable with Windows and find MacOS really clunky (but 'prettier') in comparison. I use an iPad for lots of things but it's still a consumption rather than productivity device.

          • +9

@Chazzozz: Why can't some people just accept criticisms of macs?

Some issues I note (macs in general):
            - Poor gaming support
            - Blatant attempt to push you into Apple ecosystem
            - Shitty file manager - Explorer is the best and tells me all the details I need about my files.
            - Not a problem of MacOS, but the hardware is so much pricier than PCs. I also have to purchase specialised docks to get stuff working

I also can't stand the stench of apple fanbois - such snobbery.

            • -4

@CptnObvious: Yeah tell it like it is fkk all these Apple fanbois rubbing their 14 hour battery lives in our faces from a 2021 model!

            • +2

@CptnObvious: Yeah. That file manager killed it for me. I was using a Mac at work and a Windows PC at home. Maybe if you grew up with Mac you'd be used to it, but I do find Windows' file explorer… and pretty much the file managers in almost every Linux desktop environment to be way more intuitive.

I gave up on Chromebooks for the same reason. Their file navigation sucked.

              • -1

@BadGiraffe: I love MacOS but hate the file manager with a passion so have used one of the many 3rd party replacements (Forklift) for many years. It's just as good if not better than Windows file manager.

This is not a good reason to write off MacOS.

            • +2

@CptnObvious: @Feedthetroll cool your jets, mate. I wasn’t trying to promote MacOS, I was merely asking why someone doesn’t like it. They both have their places in the marketplace: Windows for business, networking, and a lower price bracket - Mac for ease-of-use, certain applications (almost anything creative), and energy efficiency. I support people professionally on both platforms and I find it so much easier to help non-technical people on MacOS so it’s great as an endpoint, but I also like the ability of Windows to connect groups of computers in an environment because it has excellent networking and server functionality.

Shitty file manager - Explorer is the best and tells me all the details I need about my files.

I have no trouble finding what I need to know about files under MacOS, so either you’re looking for something else entirely or you’re not using it correctly. Dunno, I’d have to shadow what you’re doing to work it out.

I also can't stand the stench of apple fanbois - such snobbery.

You know, not everyone who professes to like MacOS is a ‘fanboi/fangirl’. I see nothing wrong in appreciating multiple operating systems for their respective strengths. There is no one perfect OS and unless you write one yourself I doubt you’ll ever find it.

And, for the record, I view your comment as being far more snobby by trying to exclude Macs. You just need to grow up and accept there’s a place for them, even if they’re not for you.

              • @Chazzozz: You saw my comments as a personal attack, judging by your comments.
"You just need to grow up…"
"so either you’re looking for something else entirely or you’re not using it correctly."

No buddy, you have to learn to respect other people's opinion, and criticism of macs. My points are as valid as yours, but if you are taking personal offense here I suggest you reflect whether you are really a fanboi than you are willing to admit… Apple fanbois tend to be defensive, self-righteous and obnoxious. Now ask yourself, are you a fanboi that must prove your argument by having the last word?

          • +2

@Chazzozz: there's a reason 99% of the workplaces dont give out Macs

            • @Freestyle: I'm pretty sure there's more than just one reason.

To be honest, Apple products have amazing build quality. The only other company that has come close to making their products as clean as Apple are Microsoft. But even at work, we refused to buy Surfaces for staff because they were too expensive.

          • @Chazzozz: I actually prefer this about the Mac keyboard, I find the location of the CMD key and using my thumb to press it feels a bit more natural feeling than using Ctrl (25+ years Windows user here).

        • +4

I use Mac for work, Windows for gaming, and everything else on linux. Apple products in general are money pits, repairing is so expensive, eco system is designed to trap you in.
Apple is like tobacco company, it is fun while u r at it, but u pay a hefty price both long term and short term.
I repair my android phone and PC myself, cannot really do that with modern Apple product.

is the ram upgradable? seems this is non-touch scree, Do you know a similar touchscreen one?

    • +3

@Hoolio Most laptops that come with a dedicated graphics chip will generally have a much weaker battery life compared to a laptop with only integrated graphics.

Complete garbage. I have the Lenovo Ideapad with a 5800H/3060 and 60Wh battery and it barely lasts 2.5 hours browsing the internet. Do anything else with it and it gets even shorter. Also, I've had the laptop for about 9 months and it's already at 10% wear on the battery despite disabling rapid charge. While gaming with the 3060, it lasts about 35 minutes. Otherwise, it's a great laptop.

      • +2

        Plug it in the wall!!!

      • Yeah it’s very easy for the discreet GPU to be activated on desktop lots of apps trigger it. There is an open source app that manages it really well that I can’t remember the name of. DM me and I’ll remember to find it

12th gen one even cheaper, i doubt you'd care much about the performance difference.

  • In general, how do you guys keep the antivirus updated? Do you buy subscription or onetime? Which one and how much it cost?

    • +1

there is free one called microsoft defender, Kaspersky cloud etc

      • is it free lifetime or certain period?

        • Kaspersky cloud is free for 12 mth and after 12 mths you can extend it again for another 12 year(rolling over)
Defender is part of microsoft windows installed on your machine

    • +7

Just stick with the built in windows one. It's plenty good, never nags you about buying anything, and is fairly lightweight.

      • And gets constant security updates.

        • Thanks, guys, the built in windows one is "microsoft defender"? or something else ?

          • +1

@bluespider: 'Microsoft Security', with the shield icon.

It's already on and set up by default, you shouldn't have to fiddle around with it

Don't go clicking dodgy links in your emails and installing random software and you'll be fine.

    • +1

Default windows defender and common sense has gotten me this far

  • What a shame. I paid $1099 in december for exact same model. Been good, although I never play games and always use plugged in.

    • How many hours do you get with your usage?

      • +2

Have never used it unplugged. Probably wouldn't be great I imagine.

  • +2

    250 nits

    • Surprising plenty bright enough for me. Had to actually turn down brightness….

      • +11

Are you also using it with curtains drawn, lights out, in your abondoned mansion in Transylvania?

        • +1

Just in a room with a small window. Obviously don't use my laptop outside in the middle of summer like you. I'm normal…..

          • @Webbo: "I'm normal…"
            Says who?

          • @Webbo: It's all good and well that 250 nits works in a darkish room where you can control the lighting. However, if you're dropping near $1k on a laptop that's probably going to be used as a portable work device for a multitude of situations and times of day, you'd bloody well want to be able to use it without straining your eyes to see.

  • Does it have thunderbolt 4?

    • No unfortunately.
